B。 B One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along his route. No problems for the first few stops—a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, “Big John doesn’t pay!” and sat down at the back. The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically mild-mannered. Naturally, he didn’t argue with Big John, but he wasn’t happy about it. The next day the same thing happened—Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth. This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong—what’s more, felt really good about himself. So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, “Big John doesn’t pay!” the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, “Oh, yeah? And why not?” With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, “Big John has a bus pass.” 24. What did Big John do repeatedly? A. He took advantage of the bus driver. B. He didn’t pay for the bus ticket. C. He argued with the bus driver. D. He signed up for body building courses. 25. The underlined phrase in the fourth paragraph means “_____”. A. Pleased B. Interested C. Bored D. Annoyed 26. Why did Big John not pay for the bus ticket? A. He had the ticket to ride the bus. B. He was strong enough. C. He forgot paying the ticket. D. He wanted to take the bus for free. 27. What can be learned from the passage? A. It is never too late to believe in yourself. B. Nothing can prevent a person from achieving his goal. C. Be sure there is a problem firstly before working hard to solve one. D. It is better to set a goal firstly if you want to succeed. B 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第三段的“The next day the same thing happened—Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth.(第二天,同样的事情发生了——Big John又上了车,摆出拒绝付钱的样子,然后坐了下来。 根据第四段的“who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer.(他开始因为Big John占他便宜而失眠。 根据最后一段的“With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, “Big John has a bus pass.”(Big John脸上带着惊讶的表情回答说:“Big John有公车月票。”)” 根据倒数第二段的“He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong—what’s more, felt really good about himself.(他报名参加了健身课程、空手道、柔道以及所有这些好东西。 和最后一段的“With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, “Big John has a bus pass.”(Big John脸上带着惊讶的表情回答说:“Big John有公车月票。”)” C。 C Nightmares, or bad dreams, are terrible. I’ve dreamt about throwing up, animals swallowing me, and someone breaking into my house―all causing me to wake up in the middle of the night, heart racing, anxiety growing out of control. Sometimes, my bad dreams reflect exactly what I’m feeling anxious about. Other times, they’re about something else, but still seemingly caused by my anxiety levels. To find out if anxiety really can cause bad dreams, I went straight to the experts. The experts I spoke with agreed that anxiety could contribute to bad dreams. “Thoughts filled with anxiety while someone is asleep can manifest (显现) themselves as bad dreams or stress dreams,” said Alex Dimitriu, a double board-certified physician in psychiatry and sleep medicine. “Stress dreams, such as missing an important event, a test, or a flight, are often quite common in people undergoing stress during their daily lives.” Although the reasons why we dream are not fully understood, there may be times when your mind is simply trying to work through a challenge from that day — one that can be causing you to feel anxious. “We do know from research that the brain continues to work on solving problems during sleep,” explained Jason Durant, a New York-based licensed clinical psychologist. In that sense, dreaming can actually be a good thing, even if it feels uncomfortable at the time. “The mind is attempting to prompt (促使) you to use the tools you successfully used before when in a similar life situation, or to remind you what did not work and to try something new,” said Nancy Irwin, a clinical psychologist. Anyhow, bad dreams may be the last thing you want. You may not be able to prevent bad dreams completely, but you can focus on managing your anxiety during the day, which may help alleviate (减轻) the problem. Dr. Dimitriu suggests going for a walk, talking to friends and journaling to process your feelings throughout the day. Then, in the evenings, step away from your devices, and take some time to plot out a strategy for dealing with the things that are causing you stress. 28. Why does the author mention his/her experiences of bad dreams? A. To say anxiety is very common. B. To analyze the cause of bad dreams. C To find anxiety levels in a dream. D. To prove bad dreams are unavoidable. 29. What does the word “themselves” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Bad dreams. B. Sleeping people. C. Stressful events. D. Anxious thoughts. 30. How do bad dreams benefit us in Nancy Irwin’s opinion? A. They keep us free of anxiety. B. They help us deal with problems. C. They allow us to recall the past. D. They warn us to remain cautious. 31. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Advice on how to reduce bad dreams. B. Ways to totally prevent dreaming. C. How to relieve anxiety through exercise. D. How to improve sleep quality at night. B 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第一段的内容,尤其是“Sometimes, my bad dreams reflect exactly what I’m feeling anxious about. Other times, they’reabout something else, but still seemingly caused by my anxiety levels. To find out if anxicty really can cause bad dreams, I went straight to the experts. 根据第二段“Thoughts filled with anxiety while someone is asleep can manifest (显现) themselves as bad dreams or stress dreams, (当一个人睡着时,充满焦虑的想法会表现为噩梦或有压力的梦)”可推断,画线词themselves指代句中的“Thoughts filled with anxiety”,即Anxious thoughts。 根据第四段“The mind is attempting to prompt (促使) you to use the tools you successfully used before when in a similar life situation,or to remind you what did not work and to try something new (大脑试图促使你用你以前在类似的生活情况下成功使用的工具,或者提醒你什么是无效的,提醒你尝试一些新的东西)”可知,Nancy Irwin认为噩梦中,大脑会给我们信号,联系过去的经历、经验,有助于我们找到解决问题的方法。 Dimitriu suggests going for a walk, talking to friends and journaling to process your feelings throughout the day. Then, in the evenings, step away from your devices, and take some time to plot out a strategy for dealing with the things that are causing you stress. 故选A项。 D Peppered moth caterpillars (桦尺蠖毛虫)live north of the equator. But if you’ve never seen one, don’t feel bad: They’re experts at blending in (融为一体). Each caterpillar looks like the branch it stays on, straightening its body into a stick-like shape. It also changes its color to match the branch’s color, whether white, green or brown. According to a paper published in Communications Biology, the caterpillars sense the color of their surroundings not only with their eyes but also with their skin. Ilik Saccheri, an author of the paper, normally studies the adult moth. This requires keeping a lot of caterpillars around. Years of observation awakened his curiosity about their color-changing abilities. Each caterpillar hatches tiny and black, and in its early days is blown around by the wind. Once it falls on a plant, it must disguise itself to avoid being spotted by birds. “I was a bit disbelieving that they could change that only using their eyes,” Dr. Saccheri said. Amy Eacock, a graduate student in Dr. Saccheri’s lab decided to investigate. First, she tested the caterpillars’ eyes for light-sensitive proteins called opsins (视蛋白). “We did the skin as kind of a negative control,” said Dr. Eacock. “But then we found they were expressed in the skin as highly as they were in the head.” That’s when she suggested blindfolding the caterpillars. The researchers could cover their eyes, place them on different-colored dowels (木钉) , and see if they still changed to match. “I thought it was kind of a crazy idea,” Dr. Saccheri said. The blindfolding itself was a difficult task, involving black paint, a tiny paintbrush, a microscope and lots of patience, Dr. Eacock said. Caterpillars molt (蜕皮) several times over their lives, which required that they be blindfolded again frequently. But Dr. Eacock persisted, eventually testing more than 300 caterpillars. Over and over again, the blindfolded caterpillars successfully changed color to blend in. Many questions remain, but the behavior alone impressed the researchers. Dr. Eacock said, “I remember turning to Ilik one day and saying, ‘You know what? The caterpillars are cooler than the moths.’” “Yes. They’re pretty amazing,” Dr. Saccheri agreed. 32. What can we learn about peppered moth caterpillars? A. They feed on fresh tree branches. B. They can be found easily across the world. C. They can adapt to different environments. D. They change their body color to match living conditions. 33. Which of the following inspired Dr. Eacock to cover the caterpillars’ eyes? A. Caterpillars have a fear of height. B. There are opsins in caterpillars’ skin. C. Caterpillars molt several times in their life. D. There is something strange in caterpillars’ eyes. 34. What did Dr. Saccheri think of Dr. Eacock’s study? A. It was hard to operate. B. It was well designed. C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable. D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise. 35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text? A. To solve a mystery. B. To introduce a new species. C. To present a scientific study. D. To awaken readers’ curiosity. D 33. B 34. A 35. 根据文章第一段“It also changes its color to match the branch’s color, whether white, green or brown. 根据第五段“First, she tested the caterpillars’ eyes for light-sensitive proteins called opsins (视蛋白). “We did the skin as kind of a negative control,” said Dr. Eacock. “But then we found they were expressed in the skin as highly as they were in the head.”(首先,她在毛毛虫的眼睛里测试了一种叫做视蛋白的光敏蛋白。“我们把皮肤作为一种阴性对照,”Eacock博士说。“但后来我们发现,它们在皮肤中的表现和在头部中的表现一样高。”)”可知,她们发现毛毛虫皮肤中含有视蛋白;而根据第六段第一句“That’s when she suggested blindfolding the caterpillars. 根据文章第七段““I thought it was kind of a crazy idea,” Dr. Saccheri said.(“我觉得这是个疯狂的想法,” Saccheri博士说。)”以及下文Eacock博士所介绍的研究过程“The blindfolding itself was a difficult task, involving black paint, a tiny paintbrush, a microscope and lots of patience, Dr. Eacock said. Caterpillars molt (蜕皮) several times over their lives, which required that they be blindfolded again frequently.( Eacock博士说,蒙眼本身就是一项艰巨的任务,需要用到黑色颜料、一把小画笔、一台显微镜和极大的耐心。 故选A。 根据文章第二段“According to a paper published in Communications Biology, the caterpillars sense the color of their surroundings not only with their eyes but also with their skin. When you think about art, you might think of it as permanent. After all, that picture you drew in kindergarten might still hang on your refrigerator years later. ___36___ Think about a Broadway performance. When it’s over, it’s over. Sure, it might live on in your memory or on film. But the live show was a special event. It was limited to one time and place. Can you think of other forms of art that are temporary? ___37___ Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle? If you have, you probably were sad when it was time to leave the beach. You knew your work of art would be gone as soon as the tide came in. The sandy beach is a canvas(油画布) that nature erases daily. Most of the time, art made from sand can’t last long. Still, many people love using sand to create their own unique vision of beauty. ___38___ It is a type of live performance art. Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story. They often start with a large amount of sand on a flat surface, such as a table. They then use their hands and fingers to draw in the sand. ___39___ However, the wide variety of beautiful and highly-detailed sand artworks might surprise you. Many of these works of art are temporary. That’s where the animation part comes in. Sand animation artists create a series of images that move to tell a story. They might also use music and special lighting to complete the effect. Sometimes they take photographs of or video their creation throughout the process. ___40___ A. Not all works of art are permanent, though. B. Sand animation is beautiful but lasts only at the moment. C. If you’re a fan of the beach, sandcastles might come to mind. D. One of the most attractive types of sand art is sand animation. E. Then, they turn it into a sand animation movie when it’s finished. F. It might seem like using sand would limit the art you could make. G. Building a sand castle is a family-friendly activity perfect for large groups. A 37. C 38. D 39. F 40. 【36题详解】 根据上文“When you think about art, you might think of it as permanent. After all, that picture you drew in kindergarten might still hang on your refrigerator years later.(当你想到艺术时,你可能会认为它是永恒的。 When it’s over, it’s over. Sure, it might live on in your memory or on film. But the live show was a special event. It was limited to one time and place.( 想想百老汇的演出。 【37题详解】 根据上文“Can you think of other forms of art that are temporary?(你还能想到其他暂时的艺术形式吗?)”以及后文“Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle?(你曾经花了几个小时建造一个美丽的沙堡吗?)” 【38题详解】 根据上文“Most of the time, art made from sand can’t last long. Still, many people love using sand to create their own unique vision of beauty.(大多数时候,用沙子做的艺术品不会持续太久。尽管如此,还是有很多人喜欢用沙子来创造自己独特的美景)”以及后文“It is a type of live performance art. Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story. They often start with a large amount of sand on a flat surface, such as a table. They then use their hands and fingers to draw in the sand.(它是一种现场表演艺术。 【40题详解】 根据上文“Sand animation artists create a series of images that move to tell a story. They might also use music and special lighting to complete the effect. Sometimes they take photographs of or video their creation throughout the process.(沙画艺术家创造了一系列的图像,通过移动来讲述一个故事。 I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday. B One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along his route. B. C. To find anxiety levels in a dream. D They warn us to remain cautious. 31. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Advice on how to reduce bad dreams. B. Ways to totally prevent dreaming. C. How to relieve anxiety through exercise. D. How to improve sleep quality at night. D Peppered moth caterpillars (桦尺蠖毛虫)live north of the equator. Amy Eacock a graduate student in Dr. When you think about art, you might think of it as permanent.
