Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4

(2024·广东佛山·二模)I’m a plant scientist. Every time I tell people about my job, they may ask me, “why don’t you work hard on more ‘useful’ 1 like physics?” My answer to their questions is simple: plant science can help 2 the world. Millions of people in the world are 3 hunger (饥饿) every year. It’s not because we aren’t producing enough food, but because we are 4 lots of it. The research on plants can effectively help to reduce this waste. One 5 is that plant scientists have been able to slow down the rotting (腐烂) of apples. As a result, the apples can be stored 6 and saved. Plant science can also benefit our environment. It plays an important role in fighting against climate change. Over all, plant science is of great 7 .
However, during a visit at a 8 , I was surprised to find that few of the teenagers could recognize the rice plant in a science class. Without interest in plants, they won’t join in the plant study in the future. And they will 9 realize the importance of plant science. I think schools could and should make greater efforts to 10 this situation.
Plant science is much more useful than most people imagine. I expect more youths to explore the field and become leading pioneers.

Why have those changes 9 ? I think there are several reasons. First, it’s because people can afford to travel. Second, people prefer to live a high-quality and colourful life. Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old student from the US, recently has won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
He made a 1 that can find pesticides (农药) on fruits and vegetables. This won him $25,000 and the name of “Best Young Scientist in America”.
Subash’s idea for the tool came from a simple but important question. His mother always told him to 2 the fruit before eating it. The boy wondered if the action was 3 .
He learned that 70 percent of fruits and vegetables have pesticides. They can bring possible 4 problems like cancer. Washing only gets away part of the pesticides.
“If we could find them, we could 5 eating them and reduce the risk of those health problems,” Subash said.
Then Subash 6 invented PestiSCAND, a small tool that people can carry around. It works by shining lights and seeing how light reflects off food. With the help of a sensor (传感器), a screen, and an AI learning model, the tool can 7 if there are pesticides around.
To use it, users must point PestiSCAND at the fruit or vegetable to see if they need to wash it again. They can check the 8 in an app on their phones. During testing, PestiSCAND was right more than 85 percent of the time in finding pesticides.
Subash plans to 9 his tool and hopes to get it to the market by the time he starts college. His love for science will never go away. “In 15 years, I hope to design and build devices (设备) that can help make the world a 10 place,” said Subash.
