Step 4Wet each sponge piece. Place a sponge inside each eggshell.
Step 5 Spread some seeds on top of the sponges.

When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a little sense of what
kind of person he or she is by the way he or she shakes hands, talks, or walks. In the
age of social networking, however, first impressions (印象 ) are sometimes made
even before we meet someone in person — that is, by looking at their profile photos.
According to a recent study, these profile photos say a lot about people’s
personality. For example, outgoing people are more likely to pose in an unusual way
and use things such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photos because they enjoy
new and exciting experiences.
However, neurotic (神经质的) people often hold back their bad feelings. They
try to avoid showing their faces. So they often use something like a pet, a car or a
building.
“The colors used in them also give us some information about the photos’
owners. For example, outgoing people were found to have the most colorful profile
photos, as they want to show themselves off.” the researchers wrote.
“Although social media photos usually mean an extension of oneself, they also
6
allow a user to show his or her own personality and how perfect they can be,”
according to the researchers.
So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what
kind of photo we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last (持续).
48.In social networking, we can know what kind of person someone is by _______.
A.the way he or she shakes hands
B.talking or walking with him or her
C.taking a look at his or her profile photo
D.asking his or her friends for some information
49.If Steve is outgoing, which profile photo would he like to choose?
A. B. C. D.
50.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.We should be careful when we use the profile photos.
B.Outgoing people are different from neurotic ones.
C.The first impression will last forever.
D.Our profile photo shows what kind of persons we are.

As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of
bats hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the
other side of the room. They tried another way because they thought it was not safe
to go back through the room with the bats.
However, as they walked on, they found they were lost. Becky started to cry
wildly.
“Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t come back,” Tom said.
“She’ll send people out to look for you.”
Becky thought for a moment and then started to cry even harder. “Oh, Tom. She
thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until
late the next morning!”
“Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we
walk, there’s hope.”
So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to
put out the candle in order to save it. And so much of the time they walked in total
darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times but never got any answer in
return.
Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out and tied one
7
end to a rock. Then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again
and made his way down one of the roads. He didn’t get far when the floor in front of
him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched his arm to feel
how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand.
Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then showed
up. It was the face of Injun Joe.
——Adapted from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Does life sometimes seem to be full of problems? How many times do you find
yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem,” or “I can’t
get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to an amazing
word “yet” .
With this word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths
problem yet.”, “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible
becomes possible.
I once read about a school. After finding the old Pass/Fail system wasn’t helping
students grow, the school tried a new way to mark students’ tests. Now students don’t
see a big red F for Fail on their test paper if they don’t pass it. They see a “Not yet”. In
this way, students feel that they are on a journey to become a better self. The test is not
the end.
① This kind of thinking is part of what we call “a growth mindset (成长思
8
维 )”. People with a growth mindset don’t keep their eyes on what they can’t do.
They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep
trying till they do. They are not afraid of trouble and believe they can change for the
better. ②
③ While other people have “a fixed (固定的 ) mindset ”. These people
often keep their eyes on what they fail to do. They are always worried about not
getting things right the first time and are ready to give up when things seem to go
wrong. They don’t think they are able to change. ④
But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can learn to
have a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you
believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t. Believe that you just can’t yet.
Once you start doing this, you’ll find how powerful the small word is.
54. How does the writer lead to the topic (话题)?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving facts.
C. By asking questions. D. By showing results.
55. According to the passage, which one of the following has “a growth mindset”?
A. Jack got an “A” in the test. He was quite happy to tell his parents.
B. David failed in a competition, but he stays confident and keeps trying.
C. Jenny found it hard to work out the maths problem, so she gave it up.
D. The school team refused Sara. She didn’t want to have another try.
56. The following sentence should be put in ______.
“Clear, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.”
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
57. The writer writes this passage to _______.
A. advise thinking in a hopeful way
B. advise changing others’ mindsets

D. introduce what different mindsets are like

Rubik’s Cube is one of the most popular puzzle toys (拼图

teaching tool at first.
In 1974, a teacher named Erno Rubik wanted a tool to teach
his students shapes and movement, so he made a cube (立方体)
with lots of wooden blocks (块) that could be turned around. He
painted each side a different colour. In his free time, Mr. Rubik turned the sides of
the cube around. He soon found it hard to return the colors to their original sides. It
took him a month to solve (破解) it. That was when Mr. Rubik realized what he had
made: a puzzle that was difficult but fun to solve! Mr. Rubik called his invention (发
明) the Magic Cube.
At first, Mr. Rubik sold his invention in his country. Then a toy company made
many plastic puzzle toys and started selling them all over the world. The company
also gave them a new name: the Rubik’s Cube. The toy is a great success. Many
competitions are held all over the world to see who can solve the puzzle fastest. The

Step 2 Clean the eggshells. Let them dry.
Step 3 Draw faces on the outsides of the dry eggshells
Step 4 Wet each sponge piece. Place a sponge inside each eggshell.

When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a little sense of what kind of person he or she is by the way he or she shakes hands, talks, or walks. In the age of social networking, however, first impressions (印象) are sometimes made even before we meet someone in person — that is, by looking at their profile photos.
According to a recent study, these profile photos say a lot about people’s personality. For example, outgoing people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use things such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photos because they enjoy new and exciting experiences.
However, neurotic (神经质的) people often hold back their bad feelings. They try to avoid showing their faces. So they often use something like a pet, a car or a building.
“The colors used in them also give us some information about the photos’ owners. For example, outgoing people were found to have the most colorful profile photos, as they want to show themselves off.” the researchers wrote.
“Although social media photos usually mean an extension of oneself, they also allow a user to show his or her own personality and how perfect they can be,” according to the researchers.
So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of photo we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last (持续).
48.In social networking, we can know what kind of person someone is by _______.
A.the way he or she shakes hands

C.The first impression will last forever.

As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of bats hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the other side of the room. They tried another way because they thought it was not safe to go back through the room with the bats.
However, as they walked on, they found they were lost. Becky started to cry wildly.
“Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t come back,” Tom said. “She’ll send people out to look for you.”
Becky thought for a moment and then started to cry even harder. “Oh, Tom. She thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until late the next morning!”
“Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we walk, there’s hope.”
So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle in order to save it. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times but never got any answer in return.
Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out and tied one end to a rock. Then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again and made his way down one of the roads. He didn’t get far when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched his arm to feel how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then showed up. It was the face of Injun Joe.

Does life sometimes seem to be full of problems? How many times do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem,” or “I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to an amazing word “yet” .
With this word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.”, “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible.
I once read about a school. After finding the old Pass/Fail system wasn’t helping students grow, the school tried a new way to mark students’ tests. Now students don’t see a big red F for Fail on their test paper if they don’t pass it. They see a “Not yet”. In this way, students feel that they are on a journey to become a better self. The test is not the end.
① This kind of thinking is part of what we call “a growth mindset (成长思维)”. People with a growth mindset don’t keep their eyes on what they can’t do. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying till they do. They are not afraid of trouble and believe they can change for the better. ②
③ While other people have “a fixed (固定的) mindset ”. These people often keep their eyes on what they fail to do. They are always worried about not getting things right the first time and are ready to give up when things seem to go wrong. They don’t think they are able to change. ④
But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can learn to have a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself.

Rubik’s Cube is one of the most popular puzzle toys (拼图玩具) in the world. However, it didn’t start out as a toy. It was a teaching tool at first.
In 1974, a teacher named Erno Rubik wanted a tool to teach his students shapes and movement, so he made a cube (立方体) with lots of wooden blocks (块) that could be turned around. He painted each side a different colour. In his free time, Mr. Rubik turned the sides of the cube around. He soon found it hard to return the colors to their original sides. It took him a month to solve (破解) it. That was when Mr. Rubik realized what he had made: a puzzle that was difficult but fun to solve! Mr. Rubik called his invention (发明) the Magic Cube.
At first, Mr. Rubik sold his invention in his country. Then a toy company made many plastic puzzle toys and started selling them all over the world. The company also gave them a new name: the Rubik’s Cube. The toy is a great success. Many competitions are held all over the world to see who can solve the puzzle fastest. The World Record for solving the Rubik’s Cube is 3.13 seconds. To reach that speed, people must practise hard in the right ways.

Hello, everyone. I'm Nancy. Looking back on the life in the last year, I think I have changed a lot in some ways.
In my spare time, I used to spend much time watching short videos and playing computer games. But now, I love reading a lot because it can not only help me learn more knowledge but also open up a whole new world to me. Also, I often go travelling with my parents now. I can enjoy the natural beauty and have fun with my family.
In the past, I knew little about manners and often shouted loudly in public. After learning about good manners, I always remember to keep my voice down and behave more politely than before.
I believe I will be better and better in the future.
Thanks for your listening!
