Inside each and every one of us, there is a clock. This clock, affected(被影响)by the sunlight,
controls(控制 ) our 24-hour sleep-wake cycles(睡眠—清醒周期).During winter in the northern
hemisphere, when days grow shorter, this clock doesn't get a strong enough wake-up signal(信号),
making many people become slow and lazy. What's worse, some people's bodies need the sun so much
that they develop seasonal affective disorder (SAD*).
"SAD is not unique to humans. Animals may also experience SAD," says Kristine Gandia from
Scotland.
To understand how SAD affects zoo animals, Gandia's team picked 11 giant pandas to study.
Pandas live in south China, much farther south than Scotland. Gandia and her team spent a year
watching panda videos from five different zoos-some inside the animals' natural habitats(自然栖息地)
and others in the higher latitudes(纬度). Not surprisingly, they found pandas in the high latitude zoos
were less active in winter.
Humans have already found ways to solve the problem of SAD, like trying spending more time
outside and travelling to sunnier places in winter. For zoo animals, people can also implement some
things to help them." You can control light and temperature in zoos. If you can match the lighting of the
natural environment indoors, these animals will feel happier," says Gandia
All that raises another question: What about pets? Do they also experience SAD? Gandia says that
nobody has found the answer yet. That's what her group wants to study next.
(Note:*SAD 季节性情感障碍)

五、读写结合
第一节、任务型阅读。
Do you sometimes find it difficult to communicate with your parents? The following tips may
help.
Try to start your talk with something fun. This will make talking easier. For example, ask your
parents questions about their day like "How is the work?" They love this.
Make it clear what you want to tell your parents. If they have an opinion, let them finish, and don't
stop them halfway. Ask them to do the same for you.
Show them your respect by listening to them carefully and looking at them in the eye.
Be honest. Honesty builds trust. Life is good when your parents trust you.
If your parents don't understand, that's OK. They love you and they are trying. Sometimes you
need to explain things to them again or in a different way.
When you finish the talk, remember to thank them for listening. Say something like "Thanks. That
really helped." It will let them know this is important to you, and make them want to do it more often.
