A. As, that B. It; that C. As; what D. It; what 【答案】B 【解析】 【详解】考查主语从句。 ________ the old scientist, for whom life was hard in the past, still works hard in his eighties是一个完整的句子,且在整个句子中作真正的主语。 B。 3. the energy problem, more than 100 experts from different countries got together and had a heated discussion. Japan is facing an aging population, with the population ________ from the current 127 million to 90million. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish. I cannot say I studied particularly hard; though I did get to live in Paris and then Barcelona, where I had many opportunities to pursue my various interests and hobbies. I was frequently asked about what I planned to “do” with my language degree, and it wasn’t until after a decade of thinking that I finally had a satisfying response. I always take exception to the idea that language is just a “tool” — a means to ask for directions or defend yourself when you have trouble with the locals. It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world. This is not a novel insight. Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf were made famous by the film Arrival. They proposed that the structure of language informs the thinking style and world view of its speakers, and that language determines how we see the world. The 18th-century German Romantic philosopher Johann Georg Hamann also wrote that the features of a people’s language will correspond to the direction of their mentality. It’s a matter of debate as to whether speakers of Guugu Yimithirr, a native language in Australia, have a better sense of navigation (导航) because of their language. I think it does. Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位)themselves more skillfully than we do. To learn another language is not just to get by a bit more easily when you go on holiday. It’s to learn to perceive the world differently, to think differently, and even to be someone different. And that, in turn, throws light on your native language, your culture and yourself. 36. What can we know about the author? A. He had a clear career plan. B. He is a language enthusiast. C. He dislikes living in different cities. D. He struggled to achieve his college degree. 37. What does the underlined phrase “take exception to” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Try out. B. Hit upon. C. Put forward. D. Disapprove of. 38. Why does the author mention different historical figures in paragraph 3? A. To compare their views on language. B. To honor their contributions. C. To support his argument. D. To explain a new insight. 39. What does the author try to explain about language in paragraph 4? A. Its guiding role in our life. B. Its development throughout history. C. Its importance in social interaction. D. Its impact on our cultural identities. 40. What can be the best title for the text? A. Language Is Key to Learning B. Language Shapes Our Reality C. Environments Affect Our World View D. Cultures Promote Emotional Expression 【答案】36. B 37. D 38. C 39. A 40. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish.(我是那种喜欢一边刷牙一边用不同的语言从一数到十的孩子。 根据划线单词后文“It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used.(听到有人说人工智能会让语言学习变得毫无意义,我感到很沮丧。 根据第二段作者提出“To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world.(对我来说,语言不仅仅是被使用的东西,它塑造了我们感知和体验世界的方式)”以及第三段提到 Edward Sapir、Benjamin Lee Whorf以及Johann Georg Hamann等历史人物,他们的观点都表明语言与思维方式和世界观有关,这是在支持作者的观点。 根据第四段中“Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位) themselves more skillfully than we do.(我们(说英语的人)用“左”和“右”、“前”和“后”,而说英语的人用“北”、“南”、“东”和“西”。 故选A项。 C For US employers, offering parental leave (育儿假) — when one or both parents are allowed to take extended time off to tend a newborn child — can be a tricky issue. But it’s not the case in the UK, Germany, France and many other countries around the world, where parents can take significant time off after a child is born, with part of their compensation (补偿金) being covered by the government. The US has no such benefit. Will US employers step up to provide this important benefit? The Society for Human Resource Management has done a study recently. It surveyed about 3,000 employers and found that the share of employers offering paid maternity leave (带薪产假) beyond what is required by law dropped to 35% this past year, which was 53% in 2020. The share of employers giving paid paternity time off fell to 27% in 2022, from 44% in 2020. For business owners, parental leave is costly. Some companies — like HPE, Etsy, Dropbox and Netflix — offer six months or more of paid leave for both primary and secondary caregivers. But these are large companies. It’s more difficult for many small businesses to lose a key employee for an extended period of time. If a small business has fewer than 50 employees, it doesn’t need to obey the Family and Medical Leave Aet. But, thanks to the Section 45S employer credit — a relatively little-known tax rule that was extended through 2025,if a business allows an employee to take the time off and continues to pay at least half of their wages, the company can receive a tax credit for up to 25% of the wages paid. So that could help with the cost. Paid time off should be given to a new parent, regardless of the company’s size. It’s not only the right thing to do, but also a necessary benefit to offer in this time of tight labor markets. Being a small employer, you can be flexible. You can figure out an arrangement that works best for both you and your workers. 41. How does the author introduce the topic of the text? A. By listing statistics. B. By explaining reasons C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing cause and effect. 42. What can we know from the figures mentioned in paragraph 2? A. More employees in the US are losing paid parental leave. B. Paid maternity leave has greatly benefited female workers. C. Some US companies are suffering great financial difficulties. D. Paid parental leave has caused a range of social problems in the US. 43. Why do some US employers refuse to offer paid parental leave? A. They believe it is too complex to carry out. B. They think it is the government’s responsibility. C. They think it may bring them extra cost pressure. D. They believe it may lead to unfairness to other employees. 44. What can be inferred about the Section 45S tax rule? A. It will come into effect in 2025. B. It aims to promote employees’ basic salaries. C. It conflicts with the Family and Medical Leave Act. D. It encourages some businesses to offer paid parental leave. 45. What is the author’s attitude towards companies’ offering paid parental leave to employees? A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Critical. C 42. A 43. C 44. D 45. 根据第一段中“For US employers, offering parental leave (育儿假) — when one or both parents are allowed to take extended time off to tend a newborn child — can be a tricky issue. But it’s not the case in the UK, Germany, France and many other countries around the world, where parents can take significant time off after a child is born, with part of their compensation(补偿金) being covered by the government.(对于美国雇主来说,提供育儿假——父母中的一方或双方被允许延长休假时间照顾新生儿——可能是一个棘手的问题。 根据第二段“The Society for Human Resource Management has done a study recently. It surveyed about 3,000 employers and found that the share of employers offering paid maternity leave (带薪产假) beyond what is required by law dropped to 35% this past year, which was 53% in 2020. The share of employers giving paid paternity time off fell to 27% in 2022, from 44% in 2020.( 人力资源管理协会最近做了一项研究。 故选A项。 根据第三段 “For business owners, parental leave is costly. Some companies — like HPE, Etsy, Dropbox and Netflix — offer six months or more of paid leave for both primary and secondary caregivers. But these are large companies. It’s more difficult for many small businesses to lose a key employee for an extended period of time.( 对企业主来说,产假成本高昂。 根据第四段中“But, thanks to the Section 45S employer credit — a relatively little-known tax rule that was extended through 2025,if a business allows an employee to take the time off and continues to pay at least half of their wages, the company can receive a tax credit for up to 25% of the wages paid. So that could help with the cost.( 但是,由于第45条节雇主抵免 ——一个相对鲜为人知的税收规则,延长到2025年,如果企业允许员工休假并继续支付至少一半的工资,公司可以获得高达25%的工资抵免。 根据最后一段中“Paid time off should be given to a new parent, regardless of the company’s size. It’s not only the right thing to do, but also a necessary benefit to offer in this time of tight labor markets.( 无论公司规模大小,新晋父母都应享有带薪休假。 Lining up to board a plane has become a star k indicator of how our society has commodified (商品化的) the very act of waiting. The more you pay, the sooner you can get on the plane and the less likely you will have to check a bag. It’s not just airlines, it’s also museums, online purchases and amusement parks where VIP status can help you avoid lines. When did the act of waiting get such a bad reputation? The very act of waiting can enhance our appreciation of something. We savor (欣赏) the anticipation like a child waiting for Christmas or summer vacation. Perhaps the person waiting in line to see his favorite singer perform in concert relishes the night more because of the time invested in getting into the venue. As our world has sped up, this desirable balance between instant and delayed gratification (满足) is at ever greater odds with the current expectations of many people. This change has a negative impact on mental health both individually and collectively. When we look down upon the act of waiting, we risk losing an important part of our shared humanity. Being forced to wait is often seen as a sign of being less well off or ‘not in the game’. It encourages privileged impatience and disrespect for those who are caught waiting. The ability to wait patiently is very important for a civitized society; it’s a key skill we all need. If we lose our patience and can’t wait in line or for our turn, we end up feeling the stress of a fast-paced world. Furthermore, if we call people who wait “losers”, we are being unfair and may act without thinking about how our actions affect others. This kind of thinking makes us see those who wait as different and less important, which is a harmful way to treat others. Of course, we should not have to wait patiently for everything. For example, there are times when injustice deserves immediate action. Asking people to wait can be a calculated block to change. In a larger context though, it behoves (理应) all of us to understand the act of waiting not only as a necessary evil but also as an important function which allows us to participate fully alongside our fellow travelers in life. 46. What is the purpose of the author’s writing Paragraph 1? A. To reach a conclusion. B. To make a comparison. C. To propose a suggestion. D. To present a phenomenon. 47. What benefit of waiting is emphasized by the author? A. Enhanced appreciation of experiences. B. Increased frustration and impatience. C. Immediate access to all desires. D. Decreased value of time. 48. What factor contributes to a stable attitude while waiting? A. . Growing expectations for speedy service. B. Appreciating the moment and anticipating. C. Understanding through technological progress. D. Experiencing the quickening pace of everyday life. 49. Which statement will the author probably agree with? A. Waiting is an important part of our shared humanity. B. Waiting means that one is at a disadvantage state. C. Waiting is wrong and should be avoided. D. Waiting helps us treat each other better. 50. What point is made in the last paragraph about waiting? A. Immediate action is sometimes necessary and justified. B. Waiting is a waste of time without real purpose. C. Patience is no longer a virtue in today’s society. D. Waiting always fences the change. 46. D 47. A 48. B 49. A 50. 根据文章第一段“Lining up to board a plane has become a star k indicator of how our society has commodified (商品化的) the very act of waiting. The more you pay, the sooner you can get on the plane and the less likely you will have to check a bag. It’s not just airlines, it’s also museums, online purchases and amusement parks where VIP status can help you avoid lines. When did the act of waiting get such a bad reputation? 根据文章第二段“The very act of waiting can enhance our appreciation of something. 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Of course, we should not have to wait patiently for everything. 以及“For example, there are times when injustice deserves immediate action. 故选A。 Jenifer, who is 10 years old, has been training in the athletic centre since 2014. She enjoys taking part in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and cross-country racing events. Early in 2016, Jenifer competed in the state championships in all of these three events and qualified for the national competitions. Jennifer is enthusiastic about her experience in the national competitions. She said that the most exciting thing for her was meeting other athletes from around Australia, including a new friend named Jessica. According to Jennifer, when she participated at state level, the bar was raised. “The national competitions are really hard; it’s harder to win,” she says. Project worker Lisa notes that competing has had a positive impact on the young athlete. “Jennifer’ s participation in national competitions has enriched her life educationally, culturally and socially,” she says. Jennifer’s mother is her inspiration. Jennifer is very grateful to her mother for the sacrifices she has made to enable Jennifer to train. In order to motivate her and accompany her to the weekly training session, Jennifer’s mother has to regularly give up work opportunities. When I went to university I chose to major in French and Spanish. A Language Is Key to Learning B. Language Shapes Our Reality C. Environments Affect Our World View D. Cultures Promote Emotional Expression C For US employers, offering parental leave (育儿假) — when one or both parents are allowed to take extended time off to tend a newborn child — can be a tricky issue. A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Critical. Lining up to board a plane has become a star k indicator of how our society has commodified (商品化的) the very act of waiting. A To reach a conclusion. Jenifer, who is 10 years old, has been training in the athletic centre since 2014. Her mother, along with the rest of the family, is doing what they can to raise the funds required for regular travel and registration fees. This is a common struggle for some families pursuing success for their children. Jennifer aspires (渴望) to follow in the footsteps of her father, an accomplished runner and the first person in the family to compete in the Stawell Gift. When she is talking about running, she beams with satisfaction and happiness. When asked what her favorite thing about running is, she wastes no time in saying“winning”.
