Yet, that’s where two recent college graduates found themselves last fall. They had such great fun that they’ve decided to repeat the experience. Tonight, they’ve arrived at a barbershop. This location is a secret — just as the law office was. A man at the door checks that they’re on the guest list. Then, he welcomes them to Don’t Tell Comedy. Every weekend, in over 200 cities around the world, Don’t Tell Comedy hosts secret shows by stand-up comedians. Venues range from boxing gyms to boats. For one night only, the barbershop has been transformed into a pop-up comedy club. Founded in 2017, Don’t Tell Comedy has had a success that reflects the remarkable boom of live comedy. In large part, the demand for stand-up has been fueled by filmed specials on streaming platforms and funny clips on TikTok. Events such as Don’ t Tell Comedy are urging people to get off their sofas, because online entertainment is no replacement for participating in in-person events. “It feels a little bit like magic,” says Brendan Eyre, the headliner among the five performers at the barbershop. “You’re sharing an experience with strangers. You’re laughing at the same thing, which brings people together.” In an era when many people can’t watch television without constantly checking their phones, the audiences for both sets at the barbershop are fully unplugged for more than 70 minutes. Attendees may even become part of the show. For instance, one comedian cracked a joke about first-times Gilbert Paredes and Kelly Emmons. “If you sit at the front, they might give you attention,” says Ms. Emmons. “But that’s part of the fun. If you wanted something that is one-way, you would stay at home and watch your TV.” For her, part of the appeal of the inexpensive Don’t Tell Comedy event is discovering talents she hasn’t heard of before. The lineups are a secret prior to each show. 4. What can be learned about Don’t Tell Comedy? A. It is conducted by a lawyer. B. It usually takes place on weekdays. C. It appeals to the young especially. D. It is secretly held in unusual places. 5. What might contribute to the increasing demand for stand-up? A. People’s lack of online entertainment. B. The easy access to in-person events. C. The influence of online platforms. D. People’s urge to be unplugged and connect. 6. What does Brendan Eyre think of the experience at the barbershop? A. It relies on common interests. B. It forms a sense of community. C. It inspires audiences to share their stories. D. It needs to be more humorous. 7. Which word best describes the stand-up at the barbershop? A. Interactive. B. Creative. C. Educational. D. Professional. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第二段中的“Every weekend, in over 200 cities around the world, Don’t Tell Comedy hosts secret shows by stand-up comedians. Venues range from boxing gyms to boats.(每个周末,在全球200多个城市,Don’t Tell Comedy都会举办单口相声演员的秘密节目。场地从拳击馆到船)”可知,Don’t Tell Comedy在不同寻常的地点举办秘密演出。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“In large part, the demand for stand-up has been fueled by filmed specials on streaming platforms and funny clips on TikTok.(在很大程度上,对单口相声的需求是由流媒体平台上的电影特辑和TikTok上的搞笑片段推动的)”可知,流媒体平台的电影特辑和TikTok搞笑片段推动了线下单口相声的需求。 根据第四段““It feels a little bit like magic,” says Brendan Eyre, the headliner among the five performers at the barbershop. “You’re sharing an experience with strangers. You’re laughing at the same thing, which brings people together.”(“这感觉有点像魔法,”理发店五位表演者中的主要表演者Brendan Eyre说。“你在和陌生人分享一段经历。你们在笑同样的事情,这让人们聚在一起。”)”可知,Brendan Eyre认为与陌生人共同欢笑能让人们聚在一起,由此可推测出,这会形成社区归属感。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Attendees may even become part of the show.(参与者甚至可能成为节目的一部分)”和最后一段中的““If you sit at the front, they might give you attention,” says Ms. Emmons. “But that’s part of the fun. If you wanted something that is one-way, you would stay at home and watch your TV.”(“如果你坐在前面,他们可能会注意到你。”Emmons女士说。“但这是乐趣的一部分。如果你想要单向的东西,你会呆在家里看电视。”)”可知,观众可能成为表演的一部分,而且观众坐在前排会被单口相声演员关注,这体现了互动性。故选A。 C Mastering the science and art of performing surgery takes a human years of study and practice. Robots, as it turns out, can learn to do surgical tasks much faster. A new study on Robot Learning introduced the world to a medical robot that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to teach itself to perform surgical tasks as well as a human. The research team from Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University used a da Vinci Surgical System in the study. This is a system designed to perform some surgical tasks while remotely controlled by a human surgeon. The da Vinci robot allows the surgeon to work with much greater control and precision. Using a type of AI training called imitation learning, in which an AI model learns a new task by observing and imitating human actions, reported Fast Company, the robot is able to learn the very complex set of actions needed to carry out a surgical task. While training the robot, the researchers consulted with practicing surgeons who evaluated the robot’s performance. In addition, to truly test the robot, they essentially presented it with an unknown scenario (场景) that it had not trained on. It was able to perform the virtual simulation (模拟) with flying colors. This suggests that the robot was able to generalize, rather than just memorize and would be able to manage the unexpected situations that tend to occur in a real-life operating room. “It’s really magical to have this model where all we do is feed it camera input, and it can predict the robotic movements needed for surgery,” Dr. Axel Krieger, senior author of the study, told Fast Company. “We believe this marks a significant step forward toward a new frontier in medical robotics.” Automated medical devices could make high-quality medical procedures and care available in places lacking medical infrastructure. Not every small city employs top-tier surgeons in their hospitals. An automated surgeon could bring all the skills and expertise of a human surgeon to the people who need them. 8. How does the robot actually perform surgery? A. By simplifying complex actions. B. By remotely controlling a human surgeon. C. By being guided by a doctor at its side. D. By learning from human behavior. 9. What does the underlined phrase “with flying colors” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Perfectly. B. Patiently. C. Secretly. D. Formally. 10. How does Dr. Axel Krieger find the model? A. It will be applied to more operations. B. It is innovative. C. It needs to be improved. D. It is cost-effective. 11. What aspect of the robot does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. Its principle. B. Its target. C. Its significance. D. Its development. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第三段“Using a type of AI training called imitation learning, in which an AI model learns a new task by observing and imitating human actions, reported Fast Company, the robot is able to learn the very complex set of actions needed to carry out a surgical task.(据《快公司》报道,使用一种称为模仿学习的人工智能训练,其中人工智能模型通过观察和模仿人类行为来学习新任务,机器人能够学习执行手术任务所需的一组非常复杂的动作。)” 根据画线词后面的句子“This suggests that the robot was able to generalize, rather than just memorize and would be able to manage the unexpected situations that tend to occur in a real-life operating room.(这表明机器人能够概括,而不仅仅是记忆,并且能够应付现实生活中手术室中经常发生的意外情况。)”可知,机器人能够成功应对现实生活中手术室中经常发生的意外情况,由此可推测出,“It was able to perform the virtual simulation (模拟) with flying colors”表达的是机器人能够出色地执行虚拟模拟,with flying colors意为“出色地”,与perfectly意思相近。故选A。 根据第五段““It’s really magical to have this model where all we do is feed it camera input, and it can predict the robotic movements needed for surgery,” Dr. Axel Krieger, senior author of the study, told Fast Company. “We believe this marks a significant step forward toward a new frontier in medical robotics.”(该研究的资深作者Axel Krieger博士告诉《快公司》杂志:“拥有这个模型真的很神奇,我们所做的就是给它输入摄像头,它可以预测手术所需的机器人运动。我们认为,这标志着朝着医疗机器人新领域迈出了重要一步。”)”可知,Axel Krieger博士认为这一模型很神奇,并认为它标志着医疗机器人新领域的重要进步,这强调其创新性。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Automated medical devices could make high-quality medical procedures and care available in places lacking medical infrastructure. Not every small city employs top-tier surgeons in their hospitals. An automated surgeon could bring all the skills and expertise of a human surgeon to the people who need them.(自动化医疗设备可以在缺乏医疗基础设施的地方提供高质量的医疗手术和护理。并非每个小城市的医院都雇用了顶级外科医生。自动化外科医生可以将人类外科医生的所有技能和专业知识带给需要它们的人。)”可知,最后一段指出自动化医疗设备可为缺乏基础设施的地区提供高质量医疗服务,强调其社会意义。故选C。 D Olive (橄榄) oil has been a staple of kitchens worldwide for thousands of years. According to Reuters, Spain is the largest producer of olive oil in the world. All that olive oil makes for a lot of byproducts. The country is left with over 400,000 tons of olive pits a year. Luckily, those pits aren’t wasted. Instead, they are turned into a biofuel. “Olives are like pigs: Nothing goes to waste,” Pablo Rodero, a project manager at Avebiom, a Spanish biomass association, told Reuters. The push to use olive pits for energy came due to the poor crop yields and struggles of the olive oil industry over the last few years. Olive oil producers were looking for new ways to maximize the volume of the olives they grow. Now, the olive-pit-based fuel supplies energy to home boilers, industrial boilers, and more throughout the country. Olive pits have also fueled airplanes. In November of 2022, the Olive Oil Times reported, the biofuel from olive pits was used to fuel 200 airplanes that flew out of Seville Airport. Cepsa, now called Moeveglobal, the biofuel producer that provided the aviation (飞行) fuel, said that it saved 200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions (排放) by using the biofuel. Though environmental organizations like Greenpeace Spain say that biofuel should come second to electricity when it comes to clean energy, it is still preferable. This means that many energy companies, like Moeveglobal, have found it sensible to invest time, energy, and money into various biofuels, including the olive pit fuel. The idea of using every bit of a product, whether a food product or otherwise, is part of a growing trend where humanity has come to realize their impact on the environment around them. This speaks to the idea that resources are limited and it depends on people to think creatively about the ways in which they can reduce waste. 12. Why did olive oil producers hope to use olive pits for energy? A. To make full use of the crop. B. To reduce energy consumption. C. To control carbon emissions. D. To support local agriculture. 13. What can be learned about biofuels? A. They improve fuel efficiency. B. They are supported by the government. C. They rank first as clean energy. D. They are eco-friendly. 14. What attitude do energy companies hold towards biofuels? A Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Favorable. D. Dismissive. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Future of Biofuels B. Olive Pits: From Waste to Energy C. Spain’s Olive Oil Crisis D. Biofuels: A Challenge to Electricity 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第三段中的“The push to use olive pits for energy came due to the poor crop yields and struggles of the olive oil industry over the last few years. Olive oil producers were looking for new ways to maximize the volume of the olives they grow.(推动使用橄榄核作为能源的原因是过去几年作物产量低和橄榄油行业的困境。橄榄油生产商正在寻找新的方法来最大限度地利用他们种植的橄榄产量。)”可知,作物产量低和橄榄油行业面临着困境,促使橄榄油生产商最大化利用橄榄,包括其副产品(橄榄核),因此,使用橄榄核是为了充分利用农作物。故选A。 根据第四段中的“Cepsa, now called Moeveglobal, the biofuel producer that provided the aviation (飞行) fuel, said that it saved 200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions (排放) by using the biofuel.(提供航空燃料的生物燃料生产商Cepsa(现称Moeveglobal)表示,通过使用该生物燃料,它节省了200吨二氧化碳排放。)”和第五段中的“Though environmental organizations like Greenpeace Spain say that biofuel should come second to electricity when it comes to clean energy, it is still preferable.(尽管西班牙绿色和平组织等环保组织表示,在清洁能源方面,生物燃料应该排在电力之后,但它仍然是可取的。)” 根据第五段中的“This means that many energy companies, like Moeveglobal, have found it sensible to invest time, energy, and money into various biofuels, including the olive pit fuel.(这意味着,许多能源公司,如Moeveglobal,已经发现将时间、精力和金钱投入到各种生物燃料中是明智的,包括橄榄核燃料。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Now, Spain’s olive oil industry has found a way to turn the byproduct of the production process — olive pits (果核) — into a biofuel that fuels everything from domestic boilers to airplanes.(现在,西班牙的橄榄油行业已经找到了一种方法,可以将生产过程的副产品——橄榄核转化为生物燃料,为从家用锅炉到飞机的所有东西提供燃料。)” “Art is able to inspire our creativity. ____16____,” says Girija Kaimal, a professor at Drexel University. “But now we discover it might serve an evolutionary (进化的) purpose.” Kaimal has a theory that art-making helps us address the problems that might arise in the future. Her theory is based on an idea developed in the last few years. ____17____. “It uses information to make predictions about what we might do next — and more importantly, what we need to do next to survive,” says Kaimal. ____18____. We need to decide what kind of drawing tools to use, what color to choose, and how to translate what we’re seeing onto the paper. “So what our brain is doing every day, consciously and unconsciously, is trying to imagine what is going to come and preparing to face it,” she says. Kaimal has seen this play out at her clinical practice as an art therapist with a student, Ivy, who was severely depressed. “She had a sense of hopelessness. She was despairing,” Kaimal recalls. Ivy took out a piece of paper, colored the whole sheet with a thick black marker, and didn’t say anything. “She looked at that black sheet of paper for some time,” says Kaimal. “Then she said, ‘Wow. That looks really depressing.’” ____19____. Ivy looked around and grabbed some pink clay. And she started making flowers. “Through that session,” says Kaimal, “the student was able to imagine possibilities and see a future beyond the present moment in which she was depressed. This act of imagination is actually an act of survival. ____20____.” A. Making art can be challenging B. Our brain is a predictive machine C. Then something amazing happened D. Ultimately, interpret what the images mean E. That’s why we’ve been making art since long ago F. While making art, we’re making a series of decisions G. It is preparing us to imagine possibilities and hopefully survive 【答案】16. E 17. B 18. F 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 空前“Art is able to inspire our creativity. (艺术能够激发我们的创造力)”提到艺术激发创造力,后面“But now we discover it might serve an evolutionary (进化的) purpose.(但现在我们发现它可能具有进化的目的)”用But转折,说现在发现艺术可能有进化的目的,所以空处应与之前人们对艺术的用法相关,选项E“这就是为什么我们很久以前就开始创作艺术了”符合题意。故选E。 【17题详解】 根据后文“It uses information to make predictions about what we might do next — and more importantly, what we need to do next to survive(它利用信息来预测我们下一步可能会做什么,更重要的是,我们接下来需要做什么才能生存)”可知,后文提到了“预测”作用,B项“我们的大脑是一台预测机器”符合题意,下文的It指代Our brain。故选B。 【18题详解】 根据后文“We need to decide what kind of drawing tools to use, what color to choose, and how to translate what we’re seeing onto the paper.(我们需要决定使用什么样的绘图工具,选择什么颜色,以及如何将我们看到的内容翻译到纸上)”可知,后文讲述了我们在创造艺术时需要做的具体决定,所以空处与“决定”有关,F项“在创作艺术的同时,我们也在做一系列的决定”符合题意。故选F。 【19题详解】 前文“Ivy took out a piece of paper, colored the whole sheet with a thick black marker, and didn’t say anything. “She looked at that black sheet of paper for some time,” says Kaimal. “Then she said, ‘Wow. That looks really depressing.’”(Ivy拿出一张纸,用一支粗黑色马克笔把整张纸都涂了色,什么也没说。Kaimal说:“她盯着那张黑纸看了一会儿。然后她说,‘哇。这看起来真的很令人沮丧。’”)”讲述了Ivy用黑色马克笔作画,觉得画让人很沮丧,后文“Ivy looked around and grabbed some pink clay. And she started making flowers.(Ivy环顾四周,抓起一些粉红色的粘土。 One cold winter evening, I went out for dinner. I believe this trend is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, these short videos make learning fun and convenient. On the other hand, relying only on short videos has risks. Most videos focus on isolated words or phrases without teaching grammar rules or context. This might lead to incomplete knowledge. So I recommend selecting high-quality educational accounts and limiting daily video time to 15 minutes. Most importantly, combine short videos with textbook review to build a solid foundation. Let’s make the best use of short videos to improve our English. 词汇积累 流行的:popular → widespread 建议:recommend → suggest 依靠:rely on → depend on 孤立的:isolated → separate 2. Recently, watching short videos to learn English has become popular in our school. It would be all running and jumping and sit-ups and stuff and I wanted to go for a gold medal just like in the Olympics. Around the dinner table that night, my older sister Nancy and I both explained to Mom and Dad about this fitness test. But I knew I wasn’t very good at running long distance, so I asked my dad how I could get better at it. “What about practicing?” Dad suggested. “We could go in the evenings to the track at the high school and do some training there.” “Can we start tonight?” I asked excitedly. We left the house holding hands and talking. I had to almost run to keep up with my six-foot-two father’s long step. Soon the high school appeared, and it seemed enormous compared to my own school building and playground. When we got there, we entered the gates onto a huge football field surrounded by an outdoor track. I told my dad that I had to run the whole way around the track, explaining that the time it took would determine whether we scored a gold, silver, bronze, or participant medal, and added that it seemed so far. Smiling, my dad suggested that we give it a try, noting that I must already be warmed up from the walk. He chose a spot on the spectator side with a long, straight stretch to run first, and set us up to start running. “On your mark, get set, GO!” he said, and I took off. Dad ran along beside me, and I was breathing hard by the time we made the first turn. About halfway around I stopped and cried out, “I’ll never do it, Dad. We’re not even halfway and I’m beat!” “The problem is your timing. You have to learn to pace yourself if you’re going to run the entire race. We’ll try again, start off slowly, run more steadily through the middle section, and then dash to the finish line. Let’s see how that works,” he explained as we returned to our starting place. Paragraph 1 We began to run slowly, and my “coach” murmured encouragement. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 “On your mark, get set, BANG,” and the race began. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: We began to run slowly, and my “coach” murmured encouragement. “That’s good, a bit faster now, keep breathing steadily.” This time I got more than halfway around before I began to slow down. “Okay, push yourself now,” cried Dad, and so I did. “We’re almost there!” and sure enough, we completed the circle. Every night Dad and I ran the track at least twice. I slowly grew stronger, and my pace began to improve. Race day dawned sunny and warm. The voice on the loud speaker called out the race times, and it seemed only a few moments before my event was called. Paragraph 2: “On your mark, get set, BANG,” and the race began. I started to run and watched many of my classmates sprint off ahead. Dad’s voice echoed, “Now just run easy around this first curve and get into a rhythm and keep a steady pace.” I ran steadily, overtaking many of the fast starters. Rounding the curve, I started to pick up speed and used my arms to pump extra energy into the last section of the race. As I ran across the finish line, I heard the crowd’s cheers and saw my dad’s proud face! When the winners were announced, and the medals were awarded, we both won gold that day. I was overjoyed and thankful to my dear father. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:complete/wind up ②大喊:cry/shout/yell ③加速:pick up speed/speed up 情绪类 ①感谢:be thankful to/show appreciation to/show gratitude to/be grateful to ②开心,高兴的:overjoyed/wild with happiness 【点睛】 [高分句型1]. B Of all the options for a night out in Boston, a lawyer’s office probably doesn’t rank high on many lists. A It is conducted by a lawyer. C Mastering the science and art of performing surgery takes a human years of study and practice. D Olive (橄榄) oil has been a staple of kitchens worldwide for thousands of years. 14. Kaimal has seen this play out at her clinical practice as an art therapist with a student Ivy, who was severely depressed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
