People of different nationalities seem to vary in their use of hand gestures according to a study that seems to support the idea that Italians, in particular, “talk with their hands”.
Maria Graziano and her colleague Marianne Gullberg, both at Lund University in Sweden, asked 12 people from Sweden and 12 from Italy to describe a video from the children’s TV show Pingu to a friend who hadn’t seen it, while examining their gestures. In the study, the Italians made an average of 22 gestures per 100 words of their speech, compared with the Swedes’ 11.
But more interesting was the difference in the function of the gestures, says Graziano. The Swedes mostly used “referential gestures” to demonstrate the events of the story or the characters’ actions, for example showing a rolling pin (擀面杖) when describing baking. The Italians made these gestures as well, but also had more “pragmatic gestures” with which they commented on the story or introduced new information, such as a hand movement to indicate a new character.
Currently, Barbara Tversky at Stanford University in California says that exactly why these results occurred is unclear, and she wants to see further research in larger groups of people with a more diverse mix of nationalities. A possible explanation is that different cultures’ understanding and explanation of short videos could lead to varying ways of organizing speech content and impact gesturing.
Also, Graziano hopes to study the gestures used in different texts, and with different relationships between the speakers, to explore how various cultures use gestures to communicate and tell a story. “Gestures are produced in all languages and cultures, and they are not a mere decoration of speech; they are closely related to what we are saying and how we want to say it,” Graziano concluded.
4. How does the author develop Paragraph 2?
A. By quoting a famous saying. B. By listing data.
C. By giving a definition. D. By making predictions.
5. Swedes mostly used “referential gestures” to______.
A. introduce new information B. express their own ideas
C. show actions of the characters D. comment on an interesting story
6. Who will be involved in Tversky’s further research?
A. People from more countries. B. People of various age groups.
C. People from all walks of life. D. People with different hobbies.
7. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Gestures can help deliver a better speech. B. Why gestures are different in children’s TV shows.
C. When gestures should be used in public speaking. D. Gestures may relate to nationalities.

It is difficult to name a female architect more iconic than Zaha Hadid, whose name can be translated from Arabic as glorious. She passed away five years ago at the age of 65, but the impact she has left on the world of architecture is profound.
Hadid was born into an upper-class Iraqi family in 1950. At the very beginning, she wanted to become a mathematician and studied science at the American University of Beirut. But at some point she realized that she preferred shapes to numbers. And she turned her concentration to architecture and went to London where she met the famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Hadid once said. Despite her abundance of amazing ideas, before the beginning of the 90s, not a single building based on her blueprints had been built. Her highly expressive style, while initially criticized and believed to be crazy, is now regarded as pioneering work. Her striking contemporary architecture, inspired by natural landforms, has graced the skylines of major metropolitan cities.
“Women are always being told, ‘you’re not going to make it; It’s too difficult. You can’t do that. Don’t enter this competition; You’ll never win it’,” Hadid said. “They need confidence in themselves and people around them for support.”
Never one to be boxed in by conventions, Hadid proved society wrong. She received her first prize, the “Gold Medal Architectural Design” for her British Architecture in 1982. From then on, the awards kept rolling in. But the true triumph for Hadid came in 2004. Her project for the London Olympics Aquatic Center won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She became the first woman and first Muslim to earn the award, making a name for herself and paving the way for female architects.
Hadid’s genius lives on in the array of many other spectacular buildings she has left behind in the world. Among them are the Guangzhou Opera House, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, as well as the AI Wakrah Stadium in Qatar where the 2022 FIFA World Cup was held. Hadid may be gone, but her global influence on a new generation of female architects is here to stay.
8. Where did Hadid meet Rem Koolhaas?
A. In Beirut. B. In Dutch. C. In London. D. In New York.
9. What can we learn about Hadid’s works?
A Her architecture was inspired by mathematics.
B. Her American Architecture won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
C. Her works can only be found in European countries and the Middle East.
D. Her architecture style was too bold to be accepted at the very beginning.
10. What does the underlined word “triumph” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reference. B. Victory. C. Challenge. D. Model.
11. Which of the following words can best describe Zaha Hadid?
A. Determined and talented. B. Brave and friendly.
C. Humorous and outgoing. D. Hardworking and modest.

In the cutthroat world of artificial intelligence, long dominated by Silicon Valley, DeepSeek has emerged as an impressive new player. Since its debut in late 2023, this Chinese AI has stirred global attention, representing more than just another technological innovation. It’s a complex phenomenon that reflects the shifting landscape of innovation, power and cultural influence in the Al-driven era.
Developed by QuantumThink Labs in Shenzhen, DeepSeek was created by a team of ex-Google Brain engineers and Peking University experts. DeepSeek is not your average chatbot. Trained on an astonishing 20 trillion tokens, this multimodal model showcases linguistic proficiency, code generation capabilities and reasoning skills that rival or surpass its Western counterparts. What truly sets DeepSeek apart is its remarkable efficiency, delivering GPT-4-level performance with 30 percent less computational power.
In a strategic move, QuantumThink made a “lite” version of DeepSeek open source, a decision that has sparked widespread adoption across the globe. Developers from cities like Lagos to Jakarta have quickly embraced it to create poetry generators and AI-powered farm management tools for rural India.
However, DeepSeek’s growing influence is not without challenges. There are concerns that US government may block American firms from using DeepSeek, mentioning data security concerns. Tariff (关税) war could also be on the cards. Yet, such moves might backfire, potentially harming US startups that benefit from DeepSeek’s cost advantages.
The future of AI, with DeepSeek at the center, remains a mystery. Will it trigger a tech battle between the US and China, or will its open-source roots foster global collaboration? DeepSeek’s story is not just about technology; it’s about the power of innovation and agency.
For too long, the AI narrative has been dominated by Western powers. Now, a Chinese lab has shown that innovation is not exclusive to the West. Whether we enter an AI arms race or begin a new era of global cooperation depends on how we choose to use and share this technology. As a Brazilian coder said, the future of AI must speak the language of both the developed and developing world to truly succeed.
12. Which paragraph mainly talks about the strengths of DeepSeek?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
13. What might be a challenge DeepSeek faces?
A. Lack of funds. B. The possibility of data leaking.
C. A decline in its competitiveness. D. A ban on its use from US government.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. AI should prioritize Western languages.
B. We will enter a new era of global AI cooperation.
C. Considering global needs is required to ensure AI’s success.
D. Developing countries will eventually dominate AI innovation.
15. In which section of a website can we probably read the passage?
A. Science & Technology. B. Health & Sports.
C. Culture & History. D. Art & Entertainment.

Liam Carter was not your average 15-year-old. While most of his fellows at Maplewood Heights were crazy about the latest rock bands and popular social media trends, Liam spent his free time watching documentaries about human anatomy (解剖学) and studying first aid techniques. He loved learning about the human body, how it worked, and, more importantly, how to help it recover.
His fascination, however, set him apart. Many of the other teens in the neighborhood thought he was strange and didn’t invite him to their hangouts. Liam often overheard them laughing about his interests and calling him“Doctor Carter”. It really hurt Liam. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was something wrong with him. Why couldn’t he just enjoy the same things as everyone else?
One summer evening, Liam was in his room, rewatching a documentary on emergency medical responses, when he heard shouting from his neighbor’s house. Curious, he ran outside and saw Mrs. Thompson, the elderly woman who lived next door, crying for help. Her 10-year-old grandson, Ethan, had collapsed in the yard while playing soccer.
Liam’s heart pounded as he ran over. The ambulance hadn’t arrived yet and Ethan was lying on the ground, unconscious (无意识的) and not breathing. Mrs. Thompson was panicked, shaking him and yelling his name, but Ethan didn’t respond.
“Step back, I know what to do!” Liam said, his voice surprisingly steady despite the chaos.
Mrs. Thompson hesitated but moved aside, tears streaming down her face. Liam knelt beside Ethan, quickly assessing the situation. From what he could tell, Ethan was likely experiencing a heart emergency— something Liam had seen demonstrated in one of his documentaries.
Without wasting a moment, Liam began performing CPR He placed his hands firmly on Ethan’s chest and started chest compressions (按压), counting aloud to keep the rhythm steady. His training came flooding back to him: 30 compressions followed by two rescue breaths.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150个左右;
Neighbors began gathering, watching in silence as Liam worked tirelessly. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

People of different nationalities seem to vary in their use of hand gestures, according to a study that seems to support the idea that Italians, in particular, “talk with their hands”.
B 5. C 6. A 7. D

In the study, the Italians made an average of 22 gestures per 100 words of their speech, compared with the Swedes’ 11.
根据第三段中“The Swedes mostly used ‘referential gestures’ to demonstrate the events of the story or the characters’ actions, for example showing a rolling pin when describing baking. (瑞典人主要使用“指示性手势”来演示故事中的事件或人物的动作,例如在描述烘焙时展示擀面杖)”可知,瑞典人主要使用“指示性手势”来展示故事中人物的动作。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Currently, Barbara Tversky at Stanford University in California says that exactly why these results occurred is unclear, and she wants to see further research in larger groups of people with a more diverse mix of nationalities. (目前,加利福尼亚州斯坦福大学的Barbara Tversky表示,这些结果发生的确切原因尚不清楚,她希望看到在更多不同国籍的人群中进行进一步的研究)”可知,Tversky的进一步研究将涉及来自更多国家的人。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“People of different nationalities seem to vary in their use of hand gestures, according to a study that seems to support the idea that Italians, in particular, “talk with their hands”.
A. Her architecture was inspired by mathematics.
B. Her American Architecture won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
C. Her works can only be found in European countries and the Middle East.
D. Her architecture style was too bold to be accepted at the very beginning.
10. What does the underlined word “triumph” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reference. B. Victory. C. Challenge. D. Model.
11. Which of the following words can best describe Zaha Hadid?
A. Determined and talented. B. Brave and friendly.
C. Humorous and outgoing. D. Hardworking and modest.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第五段中“She received her first prize, the “Gold Medal Architectural Design” for her British Architecture in 1982. From then on, the awards kept rolling in. But the true triumph for Hadid came in 2004. Her project for the London Olympics Aquatic Center won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She became the first woman and first Muslim to earn the award, making a name for herself and paving the way for female architects.

故选A。

Whether we enter an AI arms race or begin a new era of global cooperation depends on how we choose to use and share this technology. As a Brazilian coder said, the future of AI must speak the language of both the developed and developing world to truly succeed.
12. Which paragraph mainly talks about the strengths of DeepSeek?
A Paragraph 1.

Tips for Starting a Plant-based Diet
The benefits of a plant-based diet are many — from increased energy and better heart health to helping fight climate change and saving money. Not to mention the peace of mind with no longer eating cute cows and smart pigs. ____16____
◆Consider style and frequency.
Some people decide right then and there that they will never eat a little meat again. It’s a good idea to consider your style goals and start from there. ____17____ If you want to start slowly, you can start by giving up meat one day or more a week or during certain times of the day.
◆Don’t fall into the refined carb (碳水化合物) trap.
We go vegetarian and replace that meat food in our diet with easy and inviting refined carbs: French fries, chips, you name it. ____18____ they will make you feel worse. Make sure to have healthy snacks around, and start your effort with a thoughtful menu plan. That way, you don’t end up hungry and reaching for the carbs.
◆____19____
While it might seem that the Internet’s plenty of food blogs have made cookbooks outdated, nothing could be further from the truth. Cookbooks provide something that the Internet can’t. Looking through the vegetarian section at a bookstore will introduce you to the wide variety of styles out there.
◆Eat out and call it research.
____20____ But when you start a new eating plan, it can be a helpful resource. Learning how the professionals handle vegetarian cuisine can be inspiring. From high-end plant-based restaurants to your local supermarket salad bars, you can get a great sense of the wonderful range of flavors and possibilities that can be made without animal-based ingredients (原料).
A. Eating out might be a luxury.
B. Study up on the nutrition of whole grains;
C. Buy some cookbooks.
D. They will not make you feel better;
E. Some people select to slip into it slowly.
F. You’re making delicious, satisfying, amazing meals out of raw vegetables.
G. The following tips will help you ease your way into the world of plant-based eating.
G 17. E 18. D 19. C 20. A
上文“The benefits of a plant-based diet are many — from increased energy and better heart health to helping fight climate change and saving money. Not to mention the peace of mind with no longer eating cute cows and smart pigs. (植物性饮食的好处有很多——从增加能量和改善心脏健康到帮助应对气候变化和省钱。更不用说不再吃可爱的牛和聪明的猪所带来的内心平静了)”讲述了植物性饮食的好处,下文给出了开始植物性饮食的建议,所以空处需要一个过渡句,引出下文的建议。G选项“The following tips will help you ease your way into the world of plant-based eating. (以下建议将帮助你轻松进入植物性饮食的世界)”起到了承上启下的作用,符合语境。故选G。
【17题详解】
上文“Some people decide right then and there that they will never eat a little meat again. It’s a good idea to consider your style goals and start from there. (有些人当时就决定再也不吃一点肉了。考虑你的风格目标并从那里开始是个好主意)”提到有些人决定不再吃肉,空处应承接上文,继续说明其他人对于开始植物性饮食的态度。E选项“Some people select to slip into it slowly. (有些人选择慢慢开始)”与上文形成对比,符合语境。故选E。
【18题详解】
上文“We go vegetarian and replace that meat food in our diet with easy and inviting refined carbs: French fries, chips, you name it. (我们成为素食主义者,用简单诱人的精制碳水化合物代替饮食中的肉类食物:炸薯条、薯片,你能想到的都有)”提到人们用精制碳水化合物代替肉类;下文“they will make you feel worse. (它们会让你感觉更糟)”指出这种做法的负面影响,所以空处应说明上文行为的影响。D选项“They will not make you feel better; (它们不会让你感觉更好;)”中“they”指代前文的“refined carbs”,符合语境。故选D。
设空处为小标题;下文“While it might seem that the Internet’s plenty of food blogs have made cookbooks outdated, nothing could be further from the truth. Cookbooks provide something that the Internet can’t. (虽然互联网上的大量美食博客似乎让食谱变得过时了,但事实远非如此。食谱提供了互联网无法提供的东西)”提到食谱有其独特的价值,所以本段主要说的是食谱的重要性。C选项“Buy some cookbooks. (买一些食谱)”能够概括这一段的主旨,符合语境。故选C。
【20题详解】
下文“But when you start a new eating plan, it can be a helpful resource. Learning how the professionals handle vegetarian cuisine can be inspiring. (但当你开始一项新的饮食计划时,外出就餐会是一个很有用的资源。了解专业人士是如何制作素食菜肴的可能会给你带来启发)”中的But表示转折,说明空处与下文意思相反,即外出就餐可能不是很有帮助。A选项“Eating out might be a luxury. (外出就餐可能是一种奢侈)”与下文形成转折关系,说明虽然外出就餐可能花费较高,但在新饮食计划中是有帮助的,符合语境。故选A。

His fascination however, set him apart.
注意:
1.续写词数应 150个左右;
Neighbors began gathering, watching in silence as Liam worked tirelessly. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Liam was asked to lead a CPR workshop for the community’s youth. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Neighbors began gathering, watching in silence as Liam worked tirelessly. No one dared to speak for fear that Liam would be disturbed. One, two...with Liam’s rhythmic compressions, two minutes passed quickly. Liam’s T-shirt was drenched in sweat and everyone looked nervous and anxious. Suddenly, with a faint breath coming from his mouth, Ethan came to life finally. Loud cheers broke out from the crowd and Mrs. Thompson hugged Liam tightly, keeping thanking him constantly. Just then, the ambulance arrived. After examing Ethan’s body, the doctor said that it was Liam’s timely first aid that saved Ethan’s life successfully. Soon, Liam became a hero in the community.
Liam was asked to lead a CPR workshop for the community’s youth. He had hardly led his peers to watch documentaries about human anotomy, study first aid techniques and practice performing CPR together when he accepted the task. Gradually, impressed by Liam’s enthusiasm, patience and wealth of knowledge, his peers came to regard him as a good friend, inviting him to their hangouts sometimes. Feeling more motivated, Liam began to devote himself to studying medicine that he loved fully.
