I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain’s literary heritage Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels not only because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories and interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean. Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiance ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.
24. Why are some novels called “classic”?
A. They stand the test of time. B. They are taught at universities.
C. They are written by famous authors. D. They are translated into many languages.
25. Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To introduce the university lessons.
B. To remind people of the poverty in London.
C. To let people know about what family life was like.
D. To prove classic novels help people know the past.
26. What can we know about the character Miss Havisham?
A. She is selfish and mean. B. She lives an unhappy life.
C. She loves wedding dresses most. D. She becomes rich with others’ support.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why I like classic novels B. Why some novels are classic
C. How to read classic novels D. How to teach classic novels
A 25. D 26. B 27. A

Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will mess up your house, destroy your belongings, bark extremely, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that turn out at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to what is acceptable.
One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train (驯服) it. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the base for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.
Training is also an easy way to set up the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here, sit,” it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to create yourself top dog or leader of the dog pack (群) by using extreme measure. You can teach your dog its subordinate (从属的) role by teaching it to show obedience to you. Most pet dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge.
Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.
28. Behavior problems of dogs are believed to _______.
A. happen when they go wild B. get worse in modern society
C. be just part of their nature D. present a danger to human beings
29. Effective communication between a dog and its owner is _______.
A. sure to solve all the dog’s behavior problems B. a good way to teach the dog new tricks
C. the base for dogs to perform tasks D. an extreme measure in obedience training
30. Why do pet dogs love performing tricks for their masters?
A. To avoid being punished. B. To show their feeling for their masters.
C. To win leadership of the dog pack. D. To show their willingness to obey.
31. When a dog has received effective obedience training, its owner _______.
A. can give the dog more rewards B. will enjoy a better family life
C. will have more confidence in himself D. can give the dog more freedom
C 29. C 30. D 31. D

If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to prevent this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline (衰退). In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆). However, all is not lost because these days it’s relatively easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps have put programmes that can test, keep and even improve our memories and a number of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains sharp, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people think it is beneficial to play some online games that are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits is “weak to non-existent”. Playing a “brain game” may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people’s daily cognitive (认知的) abilities.
Don’t lose heart, though. There are other ways to develop the brain. It recommends trying new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.
32. Why is playing the piano mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of brain decline. B. To explain how to keep physically healthy.
C. To show the importance of regular exercise. D. To illustrate the meaning of an old saying.
33. What can we infer about the effectiveness of playing online brain games from paragraph 3?
A. The benefits are not obvious in terms of daily cognitive abilities.
B. Both game performance and cognitive functions are greatly improved.
C. Strong and continuous benefits have been proved.
D. The evidence of the benefits is weak to non-existent.
34. According to James Goodwin, which of the following does NOT help prevent brain decline?
A. Taking part in a new cooking class that teaches techniques unknown before.
B. Playing a familiar game that does not demand much thought.
C. Participating in a photography course that challenges one’s creative skills.
D. Learning a new musical instrument that requires concentration.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Regular exercise and healthy lifestyle are key to keeping the brain healthy.
B. Brain decline is natural and unavoidable as people age.
C. Online brain games can improve people’s cognitive abilities.
D. Engaging in new and challenging activities can benefit brain health.
D 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to prevent this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.( 如果你不使用它,你就会失去它。至少,老话是这么说的。它指的是不经常使用的东西很快就会陷入衰退状态。例如,你有几年没有做过的爱好,比如弹钢琴。下次你拿起它的时候,也许你已经完全忘记了!为了防止这种情况,人们经常锻炼以保持他们的技能锋利。)”可知,第一段中提到了长时间不弹钢琴,再次弹奏时可能会完全忘记,是为了说明前面提到的那句老话“If you don’t use it, you lose it.”
根据第三段中“Playing a “brain game” may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people’s daily cognitive (认知的) abilities.( 玩“脑力游戏”可能会提高游戏表现,但这在人们的日常认知能力方面尚未显示出令人信服的结果。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health.( Age UK的首席科学家詹姆斯·古德温(James Goodwin)表示,大脑衰退并非不可避免。只要这些活动“对你来说是新鲜的,需要你集中注意力”,它们就能对大脑健康有益。)”可知,对大脑健康有益的活动是对你来说新的且需要集中注意力的。B 选项 “玩一个不需要太多思考的熟悉游戏”,既不新也不需要集中注意力,不能帮助预防大脑衰退。故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及最后一段中“As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.( 只要这些活动“对你来说是新鲜的,需要你集中注意力”,它们就能对大脑健康有益。

57. kicking
58. financial
59. western
60. has been
61. stopped
62. smoothly

故填The。

In the past two and a half years可知,此处应用现在完成时,主语为he,所以谓语动词为has been。故填has been。

One morning, Joey sat at the kitchen table and read the sports page of the paper. He heard his grandfather coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey could see he wasn't his usual happy self.
“Morning, Grandfather,” he smiled. His grandfather sat across the table, looking sad. He didn't pick up the paper to read. Instead, he asked, “Joey, is anything happening in town today?” “There's a ball game between Sequoyah Middle School and my school tonight. Would you like to go?” Joey told him.
Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn't read. His grandfather had told him often, "I didn't have the chance to go to school regularly. Looking after the animals and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learning to read."
One day Grandfather asked Joey, “Joey, would you go with me to the grocery store? I need several things.” In the store, Joey’s grandfather walked up and down the aisles (过道), looking at all the pictures on the cans. He saw a can without a picture on it. “What's in that can?” he asked Joey, reading the label, said “It's a can of chicken soup.” His grandfather walked to the meat counter but he couldn't read the prices or the labels. Finally, Grandfather gave Joey the grocery list and stepped out of the store. “I will meet you at the car,” he said. Joey watched him go through the door, and he thought, I wish I could help him out but I wouldn't know where to begin and how to start.
The next day was Sunday. Joey went to the library to look through some books when he saw a sign on the library wall. It read, “Do you know somebody who can't read? We can help. Just call this number.” Joey wrote the number down, and hurried home “Somebody can teach you how to read. Just call this number.” Joey explained excitedly to his grandfather.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit for his first day of school.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit for his first day of school. He arrived at the library an hour early. During that first class, he was so worried and nervous that he couldn’t remember anything the teacher said. He felt very sad and even wanted to give up. Joey encouraged him and promised to help with his study. They learned together and worked hard on the lesson every day. He took over all the chores to give his grandfather more time to study. Grandfather’s constant efforts earned considerable progress in the following months.
Months later, Grandfather said to Joey, “I just got a letter from Aunt Helen and let me read it to you.” As Grandfather read, he pronounced each word very slowly. When he finished reading the letter, Joey cried. He was so proud of his grandfather for overcoming a lifelong obstacle that his chest felt as though it was about to burst. Grandfather looked up from the page and locked his tear-filled eyes on Joey. “Grandfather,” said Joey, “good job! I’m so proud of you.” Grandfather smiled back and then broke into a big wide grin.

Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience And it has become part of life.
C
A happen when they go wild B. get worse in modern society
C. be just part of their nature D. present a danger to human beings

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit for his first day of school.
