In 2018, when Hemesh Chadalavada was 12 years old, his grandmother forgot to turn off the gas after she made herself a cup of tea. This experience caused Hemesh to invent the “Alpha Monitor”, a device designed for dementia (痴呆) patients.
He started creating this device with whatever was at home, with the help of the internet. “The first model I built was a huge box. I learnt how to make a wearable device on the internet by learning which components to use and where I could source them in Hyderabad. I started with a hardware device, after which I learnt coding online and moved to machine learning and data science, to help me perfect my device,” he adds.
The Alpha Monitor has two parts, one, a wearable watch-like device, and the second, an alarm which connects to it. “You attach the device to the patient. In case the patient throws it away or doesn’t like wearing it, you can just put it in a bag and fix it in their pocket or sock or wherever you like. Once you plug in the alarm, you will be warned for every tiny change in movement. As soon as the patient gets up or wanders away, it will warn the family members with a huge alarm sound,” says Hemesh.
The wearable device monitors body temperature, pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements.
“The happiest I’ve ever been is seeing how the device actually works for patients with Alzheimer’s. It gives me incredible happiness to see the small impact I’ve managed to create in the lives of these families,” smiles the youngster.
24.What can we learn about Hemesh from the first two paragraphs?
A.He received little formal education. B.He had a strong self-learning ability.
C.He invented the device to stop gas leaks. D.He got support from a computer engineer.
25.How does the Alpha Monitor warn people of patients’ movements?
A.By speaking into their phones. B.By producing a loud noise.
C.By making an emergency call. D.By announcing the time automatically.
26.What is a feature of the Alpha Monitor?
A.It can analyze patients’ health data. B.It can prevent patients from falling down.
C.It can track patients’ movements remotely. D.It can make a difference to patients’ recovery.
27.Which of the following can best describe Hemesh?
A.Caring and creative. B.Generous and talented.
C.Determined and honest. D.Independent and brave.

At Nature Fresh Farms in Leamington, Canada, there’s something new among the rows of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries. Using thousands of sensors in every greenhouse, artificial-intelligence technology is helping the farm better aspects such as lighting, irrigation and harvest timing, aiming to increase the yields of its crops and reduce its use of power and water. Farmers use drones (无人机) to survey farms and look for information on weeds, pests and disease.
A lot of research into AI and agriculture is done at institutions, but it then needs to be tested in a network of smart farms. One of the farms is Emili’s Innovation Farms. “We really show how they work in a commercial setting and in a way are being a bit of a risk mitigator (缓和) as we try out these technologies and then share with others, including other farmers, and how they actually work as a means to accelerate the adoption and full integration of those new technologies,” said Ms. Keena, managing director of Emili.
It takes time to find out whether new technology has affected a crop, and this can be a barrier to adoption for farmers. Sometimes it’s within a year, or within a few years. Ms. Keena said, “We can’t ask them to take big risks on integrating new technologies at scale as part of their operations in things that are unproven.” Innovation Farms addresses a piece of one of the barriers of people needing to be able to see these technologies rolled out in a full-scale and commercial way ahead of being able to adopt them themselves.
Farmers’ trust levels are also a barrier. Data are important to AI models, but farmers need to be better inspired to share their data in order to make the technology better. But over time, there’s an increase in engagement from farmers. “Farmer engagement is absolutely critical” to developing AI tools for agriculture. “If they’ve seen it demonstrated essentially in their backyard through a smart farm, well, then we’re that much further ahead toward adoption.”
28.What can be learned about AI from Paragraph 1?
A.It replaces employees. B.It changes how farms run.
C.It adds vegetable diversity. D.It shortens production cycle.
29.Why is AI technology tested at Emilli’s Innovation Farms?
A.To predict its future. B.To expand its market.
C.To confirm its reliability. D.To introduce its advantage.
30.What’s the key to removing the barriers?
A.Bettering AI models. B.Developing more AI tools.
C.Enlarging the farm scales. D.Gaining farmers’ recognition.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.AI: a promoter of farmers’ life B.AI: a driver of agricultural development
C.Smart farms: good examples about AI adoption D.Smart farms: pioneers in agricultural innovatio
D
New parents often find it challenging to get sufficient rest, but for certain penguin species, the struggle is even more noticeable. Recent studies involving the use of brain wave-measuring devices on chinstrap penguins have revealed that these creatures take extremely brief naps, averaging only 4 seconds each. This behavior is repeated numerous times a day, accumulating to approximately 11 hours of micro sleeps which seem to keep the penguin parents for weeks.
Niels Rattenborg, a sleep expert from the Max Planck Institute, conducted an 11-day study on King George Island near Antarctica, monitoring the sleep patterns of 14 adult chinstrap penguins. He observed that these penguins maintained constant wakefulness, blinking (眨眼睛) their eyes open and closed around the clock for several weeks. He also found that chinstrap penguins only slept for about four seconds at a time in order to safeguard their eggs and newborn chicks. Remarkably, despite such minimal sleep, they were still capable of effectively raising their babies.
Typically, chinstrap penguins lay their eggs in November, constructing nests from small stones. Similar to many other penguin species, they share the responsibility of parenting. One parent remains on guard while the other goes off fishing for family meals. During the breeding season, adult penguins face few natural threats, but they must be wary of larger birds known as brown skuas, which hunt their eggs and chicks, as well as other penguins that may attempt to steal stones from their nests.
“For these penguins, microsleeps serve as away to repair themselves and they are crucial for the penguins’ survival,” said Niels. While the study did not extend beyond the mating season, it is hypothesized that chinstrap penguins may engage in longer sleep periods at other times of the year. The scientific community is yet to determine whether the benefits of these microsleeps are equivalent to those gained from longer sleep duration, and it remains unclear if other penguin species exhibit similar sleep patterns.
32.What does the recent study on chinstrap penguins focus on?
A.Sleeping patterns. B.Brain waves.
C.Newborn nursing. D.Parenting style.
33.What is the primary reason for the penguins’ constant wakefulness?
A.To keep exchanging with each other.
B.To look out for threats to their young.
C.To ensure they are always ready to hunt for food.
D.To adapt to the weather conditions of Antarctica.
34.What does the underlined word “wary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Critical. B.Guilty. C.Watchful. D.Fond.
35.What can be confirmed through the research?
A.Chinstrap penguins’ sleeping habits vary with seasons.
B.Microsleeps are a unique feature of chinstrap penguins.
C.Chinstrap penguins have microsleeps just in the mating season.
D.Microsleeps have restorative function for chinstrap penguins.

Jessica and the Necklace
Jessica and her little sister Anna slipped into their Mum’s room. “I’m just going to try on me jewelry,” said Jessica. She took a necklace and tried to put it on her neck. “Oh, no,” said Anna. “Mum doesn’t like us playing with her stuff.” “OK, you are the lookout,” instructed Jessica. “Stand by the door and let me know if Mum comes up the stairs.”
Before Anna reached the door, Rocky, the family’s dog, charged into the room and almost knocked Jessica down. The necklace went flying. It had barely hit the floor when Rocky bit it and raced off.
“Rocky! Rocky!” yelled Jessica. “Anna, help me get the necklace back.” The girls chased Rocky. “Stop!” they yelled. Rocky dashed down the stairs and into the living room. He stopped just long enough for the girls to get close, and then took off again. “Stop!” yelled Jessica. “Anna, you go the other way. We’ll comer him in the dining room.”
Jessica met Anna in the dining room. Sure enough, Rocky was there waiting for them. He was down low on his front legs with his tail in the air, ready to play. “Grab him!” screamed Jessica.
Jut as Anna was about to grab him, Rocky took off again. “Stop, you are a troublemaker!” yelled Jessica as she raced after him. The girls got close again, but Rocky zoomed down the basement (地下室) stairs. The girls raced after him. “I don’t see him.” said Anna. Jessica scratched her head, “He’s got to be down here.”
Just then, Mum called to the girls. “Jessica, what’s all the noise? What’s wrong? I heard you from the yard.” “Uh, oh,” whispered Jessica. “Uh… nothing is wrong,” she shouted back. 第二节 (满分25分)
67.范文
“Jessica!” said Mum. “Up here right now.” Hurrying upstairs, Jessica could feel her blood rushing to her face. While she was struggling to find an excuse, Mum’s voice broke in. “Where is he now?” asked Mum, with arms crossed. Not daring to look into Mum’s eyes, Jessica just pointed to the basement as a reply. The three remained silent, wondering how to get the necklace back. Suddenly, an idea flashed across Jessica’s mind. She went straight to the kitchen counter and took some snacks. “I know what to do. Just come with me.” she smiled.
Jessica went into the basement with the snacks, Mum and Anna following. “Rocky,” called Jessica, “I’ve got a treat for you.” In no time, Rocky appeared at Jessica’s feet, with his tail swinging up and down. Just at that moment, Jessica grabbed his collar and pulled the necklace from his mouth. Handing the necklace to Mum, Jessica apologized, “Sorry, Mum. I shouldn’t have touched your stuff. I’m the troublemaker.” Jessica hung her head, overwhelmed with guilt, while Rocky was pushing Mom softly to pet him. “As long as you admit your fault,” said Mum gently, patting her girls and the little “troublemaker”.
