Life had always been about action for former teacher Billy Keenan, who had served in the Army before. He mastered musical instruments including the flute, guitar, bass guitar and piano. As a competitive triathlete and surfer, he completed numerous 5K, 10K and half-marathon runs. “I was at the peak of my powers,” he said.
But on Sept. 14, 2013, his life changed in an instant while surfing at the Jersey Shore. “I rode that wave, fell off my board, hit my head on the ocean floor,” Keenan said. “Everything faded to black.” Keenan woke up in a hospital room two and a half weeks later. He had been paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the shoulders down and the medical team didn’t expect him to regain independent breathing.
Keenan called it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was “a lot of darkness”. When a parent of a former student visited him at the hospital, they handed him the phone. It was New York Police Department Detective Steven McDonald, who survived a shooting in 1986. He eventually forgave his attacker. But he too was paralyzed. He became a public speaker, conveying the importance of forgiveness.
That day, he had advice for Keenan. At a recent talk at Berkeley College, Keenan recalled what McDonald had told him. “The only reason you survive is when you’re better, when you’re stronger, when your recovery is over, you’re going to come back and contribute in a significant way,” he said. “Don’t ever forget that in the end, there will be life.”
Looking back on his life, Keenan realized he had been accustomed to what he called “deliberate discomfort”. Drawing on his own faith and that reminder from McDonald, Keenan ascended beyond the darkest days. Four months after his accident, he was able to breathe on his own again.
In 2015, Keenan went back to teaching, but later retired. When McDonald died in January 2017, Keenan decided to start helping others by becoming a motivational speaker. He published an autobiography in 2023 — “The Road to Resilience: The Billy Keenan Story” — and is already working on his next book, a new coming-of-age story called “I Am Iron Man”
4. What caused Billy Keenan’s paralysis?
A. A car accident during a race. B. A fall while surfing, hitting his head.
C. A severe illness diagnosed in 2013. D. A shooting incident in New York.
5. How did Keenan mostly feel immediately after waking up in the hospital?
A. Angry at the medical team. B. Hopeless and overwhelmed by darkness.
C. Grateful for surviving the accident. D. Excited to start recovery.
6. Which phrase can replace the underlined part in paragraph 5?
A. pulled through difficulties B. survived the challenges
C. returned to normal life D. forgot about the past
7. According to the passage, both Keenan and McDonald may believe ________.
A. helping others helps yourself B. challenges make you stronger
C. life is never easy for those who dream D. a life living for others is a life worthwhile
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. D

根据第二段中“I rode that wave, fell off my board, hit my head on the ocean floor(我乘着海浪,从冲浪板上摔下来,头撞到了海底)”可知,Billy Keenan是因为冲浪时摔倒,撞到头部而造成瘫痪的,故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Keenan called it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was ‘a lot of darkness’.(Keenan称这是他一生中最糟糕的日子之一,说那是‘一片黑暗’)”可知,Keenan在医院醒来后最可能感到绝望,被黑暗包围,故选B。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线部分前“Drawing on his own faith and that reminder from McDonald(凭借自己的信念和McDonald的提醒)”和后文“Four months after his accident, he was able to breathe on his own again.(事故发生四个月后,他又能自己呼吸了)”可知,凭借自己的信念和McDonald的提醒,Keenan“度过了至暗时刻”,事故发生四个月后他又能自己呼吸了。由此猜测,划线部分与A项“克服困难”同义,故选A。

Flexibility is important for wearable electronics to enable the creation of displays that bend, fold or twist easily, says Yu Haidong, at Nanjing Tech University in China. Plastic has been the only material for achieving this kind of flexibility, but because of its harmful impact on the environment, sustainable, low-cost alternatives(替代物) are highly sought after.
Fish scales account for 3 percent of the 70.5 million metric tonnes of fish produced globally each year. They usually don’t get eaten and go to waste, but Yu and his team saw potential in flexible electronics.
The team extracted gelatin from fish scales and used this to create an extremely thin film. Tiny silver nanowires(纳米丝) were then incorporated into it, to act as electrodes(电极), along with a light-emitting material made of zinc sulphide (硫化锌) and copper, to provide light for the electronic display.
“The result was a flexible electronic display, which fully biodegraded(生物降解) after 24 days in soil. A plastic display can take centuries to break down. This means fish scale films could also be useful for creating disposable wearable electronic devices,” says Yu. “In addition to biodegradability, the fish scale films have the advantages of high transparency, low surface roughness and low cost. They can also be recycled by dissolving them in warm water.”
8. Why is flexibility important for wearable electronics?
A. Because it’s easy for the display to change shapes.
B. Because materials with this character are environmentally friendly.
C. Because materials with this character are sustainable.
D. Because materials with this character are low-cost.
9. Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage?
A. Fish scales are highly valuable and widely used in industrial production.
B. Plastic’s flexibility is achieved through the using of silver nanowires.
C. The new material can decompose faster than traditional plastics.
D. Silver nanowires are added to the film mainly for flexibility.
10. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT an advantage of the fish scale film?
A. High transparency. B. Fast biodegradability.
C. Smooth surface. D. High production cost.
11. What is the researcher’s attitude towards the future of the new material?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据文章第一段内容“Flexibility is important for wearable electronics to enable the creation of displays that bend, fold or twist easily, says Yu Haidong, at Nanjing Tech University in China.(中国南京工业大学的Yu Haidong教授表示,柔韧性对于可穿戴电子产品而言十分重要,因为这能让其制造出能够轻松弯曲、折叠或扭转的显示屏。)”可知,柔韧性可以使可穿戴的显示屏做到弯曲,折叠或扭转等变形,因此,这种特性对于可穿戴的显示屏很重要。故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段内容“Fish scales account for 3 percent of the 70.5 million metric tones of fish produced globally each year. They usually don’t get eaten and go to waste(全球每年生产的 7050 万吨鱼类中,鱼鳞占 3%。它们通常不会被食用,因而会造成浪费)”可知,文中提及鱼鳞不会被食用,反而会被浪费掉,因此,选项A“Fish scales are highly valuable and widely used in industrial production.(鱼鳞具有极高的价值,并且在工业生产中被广泛应用。)”是与原文表述不符的,错误的。根据文章第一段内容“Plastic has been the only material for achieving this kind of flexibility(塑料一直是实现这种柔韧性所需的唯一材料)”可知,塑料的灵活性源于其自身材料特性,与银纳米丝无关,而B项“Plastic’s flexibility is achieved through the using of silver nanowires.(塑料的柔韧性是通过使用银纳米线得以实现的。)”与原文内容不符,B项错误。文中第三段提及“Tiny silver nanowires were then incorporated into it, to act as electrodes(随后,将极细的银纳米线掺入其中,用作电极)”可知,银纳米线是作为电极用,D项“Silver nanowires are added to the film mainly for flexibility.(银纳米线被添加到薄膜中主要是为了增强其柔韧性。)”与其表述不一致,D项错误。文章第四段内容“The result was a flexible electronic display, which fully biodegraded after 24 days in soil. A plastic display can take centuries to break down.(其结果是制造出了柔性电子显示屏,这种显示屏在土壤中放置 24 天后就能完全生物降解。而塑料显示屏则需要数百年才能分解。)”提及这种新型显示屏24天就能完全生物降解,塑料则需要数百年,即,它比塑料生物降解的更快,C项“The new material can decompose faster than traditional plastics.(这种新材料的分解速度比传统塑料更快。)”与其表述相同,C项正确。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章末尾段内容“In addition to biodegradability, the fish scale films have the advantages of high transparency, low surface roughness and low cost. They can also be recycled by dissolving them in warm water.(除了可生物降解性之外,这种鱼鳞薄膜还具有高透明度、低表面粗糙度以及成本低廉等优点。它们还可以通过在温水中溶解的方式进行回收利用。)”提到鱼鳞薄膜的优势包括高透明度(A. High transparency.)、快速生物降解(B. Fast biodegradability.)、低表面粗糙度,即光滑表面(C. Smooth surface.),以及低成本(“low cost”)。D选项“High production cost.(高生产成本。)”与原文矛盾。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末尾段Yu所说的话“This means fish scale films could also be useful for creating disposable wearable electronic devices(这意味着鱼鳞薄膜或许还能用于制造一次性可穿戴电子设备)”以及“In addition to biodegradability, the fish scale films have the advantages of high transparency, low surface roughness and low cost. They can also be recycled by dissolving them in warm water.(除了可生物降解性之外,这种鱼鳞薄膜还具有高透明度、低表面粗糙度以及成本低廉等优点。它们还可以通过在温水中溶解的方式进行回收利用。)”可知,他对该鱼鳞薄膜抱有期待,同时强调其环保、低成本、可回收等优势。由此推知,他的态度是积极乐观的。故选C项。

Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6,000 square kilometers of the desert — one-third of it — green.
The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area.
The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be looked to as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations.
The success of the project, which has been n praised by the UN Environment Programme as an “eco-pioneer”, sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment (投资) in the eco-industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the “Kubuqi model”.
Elion, a private ecology (生态) and investment company, has invested about 38 billion yuan ($5.82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102,000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen (氮气). Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company’s guidance and with the local government’s support, the local people benefit from the “environmental wealth”.
More companies should be encouraged to apply the “Kubuqi model” in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.
12. What is the result of the Kubuqi greening project?
A. It has increased the areas of desert. B. It has turned all of the desert green.
C. It has achieved amazing improvements. D. It has been applied all over the world.
13. What is the main reason for the success of the “Kubuqi model”?
A. Praise from international organizations. B. Government, companies and local efforts.
C. Use of new farming technologies. D. Foreign financial support.
14. How does the author develop paragraph 5?
A. By giving examples. B. By following the time order.
C. By giving a definition (定义). D. By making comparisons.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Drought-Tolerant Plants: Key to Desert Control.
B. Government Policies Alone Save the Desert.
C. UN Praises China’s Desert Greening Efforts.
D. A Successful Model for Turning Deserts Green.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

Our character will form without a guidebook and typically without our knowledge until we are faced with a situation that requires our intentional thought and action. These experiences can be a catalyst (催化剂) to our positive growth and impact who we are and what we become.
My regrettable “mean girl” moment happened when I was in eighth grade. As Halloween approached that year, my classmate Paisley, a shy yet kind girl, asked me if I would play trick-or-treat with her. I jumped at the invitation, until another more active and popular girl, Violet, invited me to join her group later. I was more inclined to join Violet because I thought I’d experience a more cheerful atmosphere. Then I made an unkind decision, lying to Paisley that my parents asked me to stay at home to pass out candy.
I remember that feeling of shame began to form in my heart as I delivered this dishonest excuse. However, that little voice of conscience quickly faded as I began to prepare my costume and plans for the evening. Unexpectedly, while we were playing trick-or-treat, I experienced a moment of pure embarrassment and shame when I found myself face to face with Paisley. The look of hurt and disappointment on her face when she saw me with another group of girls lingered in my mind.
In the days that followed, we didn’t interact at school. I knew I had hurt her deeply. Her absence in my life made me realize just how much her friendship meant to me. The guilt weighed heavily on my conscience as I reflected on my selfish behavior.
One day, as I was sitting alone in the school cafeteria, I saw Paisley walk in. She looked hesitant, as if unsure whether to approach me or not. My heart raced with anticipation and nervousness as I watched her making her way towards my table. I prepared myself for her anger and disappointment.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, Paisley smiled warmly and asked if she could join me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I look back on that regrettable “mean girl” moment, I am grateful for the growth it brought into my life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】To my surprise, Paisley smiled warmly and asked if she could join me. I was taken aback by her forgiveness and willingness to give me another chance. I eagerly invited her to sit, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. I explained my regret for my actions on that Halloween night. I apologized and I assured her that I had learned my lesson. She listened intently and forgave me, expressing her own desire for friendship. From that day forward, we formed a bond that was built on trust, honesty, and loyalty.
As I look back on that regrettable “mean girl” moment, I am grateful for the growth it brought into my life. This experience influenced me deeply and served as a turning point in my life. It made me more conscious of my choices and considerate of how those choices might affect others, reminding me that the true measure of a person lies not in their popularity or achievements but in how they treat others. I am grateful to Paisley for forgiving me and for being a constant reminder of the person I strive to be.

A Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Indifferent.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, Paisley smiled warmly and asked if she could join me.
