Imagine telling Einstein to stop studying physics. Imagine telling Picasso to stop painting. Could they stop doing the things they loved? This is what people tried to do to Sophie Germain.
Sophie’s love was mathematics. She fell in love with it when she was only 13 years old and decided to become a mathematician. However, it was very unusual for a girl from a middle-class family to study math in the early eighteenth century in France.
Sophie’s parents wanted her to be like other girls. When she studied math, they tried to stop her. Sophie didn’t want to stop. She studied secretly at night, by candlelight, when her parents slept. Sophie’s parents found out, and they took away her candles. That didn’t stop Sophie. She found more candles. Finally, her parents decided to let Sophie study.
When Sophie was 18 years old, a school for mathematician (数学家) opened in Paris. Sophie couldn’t take classes there because it was for men only. However, she didn’t let this discrimination against women stop her. She started writing letters to math professors at the school. She asked them questions, and she wrote about her ideas. However, she didn’t sign her own name on the letters. She used a man’s name, Monsieur LeBlanc. This idea worked, and the professors responded to her letters. After a while, one professor asked to meet the brilliant Monsieur LeBlanc. Imagine his surprise! Monsieur LeBlanc was a woman. The professor didn’t tell anyone. He kept Sophie’s secret.
Sophie is famous for her excellent work on a difficult math problem that was a challenge for many other mathematicians. She is also famous for her studies of metal as a building material. Years later, engineers used her ideas to build skyscrapers (摩天大楼), such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sophie’s hometown.
Today, on the base of the Eiffel Tower, there are 72 names of brilliant French scientists and mathematicians. These people all made great contributions to the world. However, there’s one important name that’s missing: Sophie Germain.
24. What was Sophie’s parents’ first reaction to her love for math?
A They disagreed on it. B. They gave it their full support.
C. They considered it as childish. D. They pretended not to know about it.
25. How did Sophie manage to keep in touch with some mathematicians?
A. She signed a male name. B. She was dressed as a man.
C. She told them of her love for math. D. She sent them her published essays.
26. Which of the following can best describe Sophie?
A. Honest and responsible. B. Ambitious and sensitive.
C. Determined and talented. D. Patient and single-minded.
27. What does the author suggest about Sophie in the last paragraph?
A. Her ideas influenced 72 scientists. B. Her efforts were widely recognized.
C. Her contribution deserved a mention. D. Her name was written on the Eiffel Tower.

In 1998, an eco- museum was established in Liuzhi special region, Guizhou Province. Later, more and more museums sprang up. These museums are built to guide villagers to protect local natural landscapes, traditional customs, and ways of production.
Compared with traditional museums, eco- museums come with different exhibits (展品) and are not limited to buildings. They have no walls or fences. “The costumes, language, music, and even the way of production and the lifestyle of the local community are all living exhibits that are collectible,” said Luo Gang, leader of the museum.
Most of the folk houses are built with local materials, such as wood and stones. However, their roofs are all made of straw and need regular replacement. As the living standards rose in recent years, some residents started using bricks and concrete (混凝土) to build their houses.
However, Luo is not concerned about such an impact on local traditions because the villagers are aware of the importance of protecting their old houses. In 2017, the wood house of villager Yang Chaozhong began to lean, but he didn’t want to transform it into a brick- concrete structure. Yang said this house has been passed down for generations, so he was not willing to make the trade- off. He planned to repair it to restore the original appearance of the house. Year after year, lots of old houses still remained their original appearance.
Thanks to the efforts in recent years, the protection of traditional culture has become a consensus in the local community. “One of the features of the eco- museum is to guide the villagers to perform independent management and activate their passion for protecting their traditional culture,” Luo explained. Now the villagers are taking action to protect their traditional culture by performing independent management. Through jo int efforts, the buildings will definitely be priceless treasure for their later generations.
28. What is special about the eco- museums?
A. Their history. B. Their collections. C. Their importance. D. Their visitors.
29. What can we learn about the houses in Liuzhi special region?
A. They are built with very limited materials. B. They are well preserved by the local people.
C. They are mostly rebuilt for economic factors. D. They are very strong and have a long history.
30. What do the underlined words“a consensus” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. An admission. B. A requirement. C. An agreement. D. A connection.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Museums Without Walls. B. The Protection of Old Houses.
C. Lifestyles of Guizhou Province. D. The Future of Local Traditions.

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
32. Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?
A. Both are about where to draw the line.
B. Both can continue for generations.
C. Neither has any clear winner.
D. Neither can be put to an end.
33. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C. The teens cause their parents of misleading them.
D. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
34. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ______.
A. give orders to the other
B. know more than the other
C. gain respect from the other
D. get the other to behave properly
35. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. Solutions for the parent-teen problems.
B. Examples of the parent-teen war.
C. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.

In love with acting, I have even studied method acting, techniques for developing deeply emotional, intense roles. When I tried out for the school play, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, I was confident I would get one of the best parts. But Mr. Ellison, the director, didn’t cast me. Instead he encouraged me to join the stage crew.
The middle child in a large family, I often felt that my parents paid more attention to my sisters and brothers. When my family appeared interested in my part in the play, however, I pretended that I had a role onstage.
A few weeks later, when Mom told me that she’d bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about being on the stage crew. But I couldn’t come clean with my family. I was sure they wouldn’t care as much if they knew I was only working behind the scenes.
On performance Friday, the eldest princess actress had to quit due to her sudden broken leg. I stepped toward Mr. Ellison and told him that I could play the role. Though doubting whether I could play it well, Mr. Ellison had no alternative but to agree my request at last since the show had to go on. I couldn’t believe my good luck, feeling like bubbles were running through my veins. Having got everything ready, we took our places in the wings, waiting for our show time. Mr. Ellison took the stage before the curtain went up and tapped the microphone. “Welcome, family, friends, and guests. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the role of the eldest princess will be played by Gillian Crenshaw, from our stage crew.” I was boiled with anger and felt embarrassed. No one would have known I was a last-minute understudy if he hadn’t told them. But I let it go.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】The curtain was rising, and I needed to concentrate. So confident did I feel that I walked towards the stage as if I had been the princess for a long time. I was sure I could deeply impress the audience as well as Mr. Ellison with my excellent acting skills. Everything was perfect at the beginning. However, since I had only watched the rehearsal but hadn’t practiced, I said other actor’s lines twice and forgot several of my own with the show progressing. What was even worse, my awkward movements and intentional acting ended with more laughter from the audience. Their laughter, in turn, triggered my attempt to try harder, which, however, made me the laughingstock of the whole performance.
The terrible performance finally over, I sighed with a relief, hoping no one noticed my mistakes. No sooner had I gone down the stage than I found my families waiting there. Feeling even more embarrassed, I told them that I had lied to them and that I had never been a part of the show until the last minute. I thought my sisters and brothers would laugh at me. However, to my surprise, they all came over and hugged me tightly, comforting me gently and congratulating me on my first formal performance in public. “We are here to support you since you are our family whether you are performing on the stage or working behind the curtains,” my mother said, scratching my head. It was not until then that I realized the true meaning of family — we are supporting each other not because of our excellence but due to our connection.
