Housework is a frequent source of disputes (争论) between lazy husbands and their hard-working wives, but women have been warned not to expect men to pull their weight any time soon.
A study from Oxford University has found that men are unlikely to be doing an equal share of housework before 2050. Mothers, the researchers warned, will continue to shoulder the burden of childcare and housework for the next four decades, largely because housework such as cleaning and cooking is still regarded as “ women’s work”.
The gap between the amount of time men and women spend on housework has narrowed slowly over the past 40 years. But it will take another four decades before true housework equality is achieved, the study concluded. The research found that in the Nordic countries, the burden of housework is shared more equally between men and women. In the UK, women spend an average of four hours and forty minutes each day on housework, compared with two hours and twenty-eight minutes for men. This is an improvement from the 1960s, when British women typically spent six hours a day on housework, while men spent just 90 minutes every day.
But progress towards housework equality appears to be slowing in some countries. Dr Oriel Sullivan, a research reader from Oxford’s Department of Sociology, said, “we’ve looked at what is affecting the equality in the home, and we have found that certain tasks seem to be given according to whether they are viewed as ‘men’s work’ or ‘women’s work’.”Dr Sullivan said cultural attitudes taught at school may be responsible for the views of housework.“At school it is much easier for a girl to be a tomboy, but it is much more difficult for a boy to enjoy baking and dancing,” she said.
24. What does the underlined part word probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A Lose weight. B. Be lazy.
C. Earn money. D. Do equal housework.
25. Why will women continue to do more housework before 2050 ?

B Because they would like to do so.
C. Because they can do better in housework .
D. Because housework will still be considered as women’s work.
26. From Paragraph 3,what do we know in the UK?
A. Men now spend just 90 minutes a day on housework on average.
B. Women now are too busy with their work to do housework.
C. Women now spend less time on housework than before.
D. Housework is shared equally between men and women.
27. In Dr Sullivan’s opinion, what is to blame for the housework inequality?
A. Cultural attitudes towards housework.. B. Policies made by the government.
C. The time spent on work. D. The type of housework.

In 1999, a Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita created his first set of emojis to be used on an emoji keyboard to deliver information in a simple way or provide context to text messages. This was a huge hit because these images helped bridge the gap between written and spoken communication. Little could he have known that the symbols he designed would become so popular that they’ve gone far beyond phones into apps, toys and more.
So, could emojis become a global language? To some degree, they already are, but could they truly become a language for all human beings? Could they replace writing itself and we all just go with emojis?
As emojis are images, their meanings can get across more easily to people from different cultures. They’ve been used in every country. They are becoming more nuanced (微妙的) and taking on varied meanings. They can be connected to create sentences as well, much like words. However, emojis are unlikely to become a global language. Emojis don’t have the depth and width of a written language. There is no grammar either, which allows for complex sentences in languages. It is also much harder to express abstract (抽象的) ideas through images alone, such as philosophy and cultural differences.
Could emojis replace writing? That, too, is unlikely, Human thought is complex, often abstract and highly nuanced. Many fields such as law, science and technology require professional expressions that emojis can’t provide. Nor can emojis replace poetry and literature, important factors of human cultures and societies.
While emojis may not become a global language or take the place of writing, it doesn’t make them any less important to humans. They can cross cultures and provide a way to show the beauty of common human values and feelings, as they already have. We all understand a smiley face and a heart or a broken heart.
28 Why were emojis first created?
A. To make emoji keyboard a hit.
B. To design popular images.
C. To aid communication in texts.
D. To apply them to apps and toys.
29. What is an advantage of emojis?
A. They can express abstract ideas.
B. They can take the place of writing.
C. They can form complex sentences.
D. They can be understood across cultures.
30. Why does the writer refer to law and science?
A. To explain the weakness of emojis.
B. To contrast with poetry and literature.
C. To show professional usage of emojis.
D. To stress human cultures and societies.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Rise of Emojis
B. The Limits of Emojis
C. Emojis: Popular Symbols?
D. Emojis: A Global Language?

How often in your busy life when faced with an issue or a problem do you consider subtraction (减法)?
Every day, with big and small challenges, we ignore a basic way to make things better. We are great at adding to our “to dos”, but we don’t consider “stop-doings”. We collect new-and-improved ideas, but don’t delete the outdated ones.
Do your resolutions more often start with “I should do more of…” than with “I should do less of…”? Do you add new rules in your household or workplace more often than you take rules away? In our striving to improve our lives, our work and our society, we overwhelmingly add.
Leidy Klotz’s Lego bridge test, with two support towers of differing heights, found that almost everyone added a Lego brick to the shorter tower, rather than removing a brick from the longer tower. The valid subtraction solution produced a stronger outcome.
Why do we ignore the option to subtract from what is already there? Why do we fail to use subtraction as a way to change things?
Firstly, behavioural science suggests that our brains are wired to ignore subtraction. Initial studies show that our mental shortcuts have a preference for adding when solving problem. We are tricked by our mindset.
Further, we have a tendency to think addition or subtraction; however, they can be complementary (互补的) ways to make changes.
So we ignore subtraction because it is often harder to think of. Moreover, even when we do manage to think of it, subtracting can be harder to perform.
In chemistry, valency (化合价) refers to an elemental force that is not necessarily visible but helps explain the elements’ behaviour. Psychological valency is the inner attractiveness or strong dislike of something. There is a negative valency around subtracting. Even the word subtraction has a negative valency.
Subtraction is the act of getting to less but it is not the same as doing less. Getting to less often means doing, or at least thinking, more. In your pursuit of success and happiness I encourage you to overcome the tendency to ignore subtraction. Subtracting can be delightful!
32. What do people usually do when faced with problems in life?
A. Adopt subtraction. B. Stop doing things.
C. Add new rules. D. Abandon outdated ideas.
33. How did the author prove his viewpoint?
A. By comparing examples. B. By conducting a survey.
C. By analyzing statistics. D. By citing a typical test.
34. What causes people to ignore the option of subtraction?
A. Initial fixed mindset. B. Resistance to change.
C. Flexible mental desire. D. Expectation for success.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. State possible reasons. B. Offer valuable advice.
C. Give some warnings. D. Provide useful proof.

Anna took her first baby-sitting job in Peter Smith’s and played games with Peter’s three children until the bedtime. Mr. Smith praised her for the great work. After Mrs. Smith had pressed the money into her hand, Anna didn’t even look at the money and then walked out of the house. She’d expected ten dollars. Now she saw that it was a one-hundred-dollar bill!
Anna imagined her parents’ faces when she handed them the one hundred dollars.
Things hadn’t been easy for Anna’s family since Anna’s dad had lost his engineering job a year ago. There had been no new clothes or movies in the last year. They no longer went out to eat on Fridays. Anna didn’t really mind, as long as her family was together. But now she could help. One hundred dollars! That was enough to fill the car with gas or to buy a bag of groceries.
Her excitement faded as she wondered if Mrs. Smith realized how much money she had given her. Could she have made a mistake? Anna felt bad as she remembered that Mrs. Smith had simply pulled the money from her purse without looking at it.
Anna thought, “Maybe Mrs. Smith meant to give me the one-hundred-dollar bill. Baby-sitting three children is a lot of work.” Soon Anna remembered that the Smiths didn’t seem to have much money, either. But, she silently argued with herself. “They gave me the money. I didn’t steal it.”
She found her parents in the living room. Anna took a deep breath and told them what had happened. “I wanted to give the money to you to help out the family, but I think Mrs. Smith made a mistake.” She continued. “I’m going to give it back to her.”
Dad settled his big hand on her shoulder. “You just gave us the best gift, Anna.” Mom kissed her. “We’re proud of you, sweetheart.”

I have played music for most of my life—about twenty years. My parents had a piano in our house that I would pretend to play as a two-year-old kid. I started taking lessons at the age of ten. I loved to play. I would practice for three hours a day as a kid. As I got older, my teachers and parents wanted me to get serious about playing. So, in high school, I took music classes and played in some concerts to make them pleased. I traveled to other cities to play. The concerts and the traveling were hard on me. I was worried about making my parents proud and being the best I could be. When I left high school and went to college, I stopped playing as much. At some point, I decided not to play the piano anymore. But I never forgot the music. Now I just play for fun. I don’t practice every day, and I don’t have to become the best player anymore. But that’s okay with me.

和Canada Goose Trillium Parka部分“For winter travel, a thick, packable coat is a necessity.
A. Lose weight. B. Be lazy.
C. Earn money. D. Do equal housework.
25. Why will women continue to do more housework before 2050 ?
A. Because men are too busy to help.
B. Because they would like to do so.
D 25. D 26. C 27. A
根据划线词上文“Housework is a frequent source of disputes (争论) between lazy husbands and their hard-working wives, but women have been warned not to expect men to (家务劳动是懒惰的丈夫和勤劳的妻子之间经常发生纠纷的一个原因,但女性们被警告说,不要指望男性)”和第二段“A study from Oxford University has found that men are unlikely to be doing an equal share of housework before 2050. (牛津大学的一项研究发现,在2050年之前,男性做家务的比例不太可能与男性持平。)”可推测出“pull their weight”意思是“做同等的家务”,和D选项同义,故选D。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Mothers, the researchers warned, will continue to shoulder the burden of childcare and housework for the next four decades, largely because housework such as cleaning and cooking is still regarded as “women’s work”. (研究人员警告说,在未来40年里,母亲们将继续承担照顾孩子和做家务的重担,这主要是因为打扫卫生和做饭等家务仍被视为“女性的工作”。)”可知主要是因为像清洗和煮饭这样的家务活依然被认为是女性的工作,故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In the UK, women spend an average of four hours and forty minutes each day on housework, compared with two hours and twenty-eight minutes for men. This is an improvement from the 1960s, when British women typically spent six hours a day on housework, while men spent just 90 minutes every day. (在英国,女性平均每天花在家务上的时间为4小时40分钟,而男性则为2小时28分钟。与20世纪60年代相比,这是一个进步,当时英国女性通常每天花6个小时做家务,而男性每天只花90分钟。)”可知过去女性做家务活的时间平均是6小时,而现在平均是4小时40分钟,所以与过去相比,现在他们做家务活的时间减少了,故选C。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Dr Sullivan said cultural attitudes taught at school may be responsible for the views of housework. (沙利文博士说,学校里教授的文化态度可能是造成家务观念的原因。)”可知在沙利文博士看来,家务劳动不平等的罪魁祸首是文化态度,故选A。
C
28. Why were emojis first created?
A. To make emoji keyboard a hit.
B. To design popular images.
C. To aid communication in texts.
D. To apply them to apps and toys.
29. What is an advantage of emojis?
A They can express abstract ideas.
C 29. D 30. A 31. D
由文章第一段中“In 1999, a Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita created his first set of emojis to be used on an emoji keyboard to deliver information in a simple way or provide context to text messages. (1999年,日本艺术家Shigetaka Kurita创作了他的第一套表情符号,这些表情符号被用于表情符号键盘上,以简单的方式传递信息或为文本消息提供上下文。)”可知,表情符号最初是为了辅助文本中的交流而创造的。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段中“As emojis are images, their meanings can get across more easily to people from different cultures. (由于表情符号是图像,因此它们的意思更容易被来自不同文化的人理解。)”可知,表情符号的一个优点是它们可以跨越文化被理解。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中“Could emojis replace writing? That, too, is unlikely, Human thought is complex, often abstract and highly nuanced. Many fields such as law, science and technology require professional expressions that emojis can’t provide. Nor can emojis replace poetry and literature, important factors of human cultures and societies. (表情符号能取代文字吗?这也不太可能。人类的思想是复杂的,往往是抽象的,而且高度微妙。法律、科学和技术等许多领域都需要专业的表达方式,而表情符号无法提供。表情符号也无法取代诗歌和文学,这些都是人类文化和社会的重要因素。)”可知,作者提到法律和科学是为了解释表情符号的局限性,即它们无法提供某些专业领域的表达。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是由文章第二段“So, could emojis become a global language? To some degree, they already are, but could they truly become a language for all human beings? Could they replace writing itself and we all just go with emojis?
D
C By analyzing statistics. D. By citing a typical test.
34. What causes people to ignore the option of subtraction?
A. Initial fixed mindset. B. Resistance to change.
C. Flexible mental desire. D. Expectation for success.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. State possible reasons. B. Offer valuable advice.
C Give some warnings. D. Provide useful proof.
C 33. D 34. A 35. B

With the development of cities, wildlife’s living areas are becoming smaller and smaller. They not only have little to eat, but also may be killed by human beings. Personally, these species of wildlife are important part of our life. More measures should be taken to protect them from being hurt. To begin with, more laws must be made to stop people from cutting down trees. What’s more, all the factories must clean the waste water before it is poured into rivers or lakes. Last but not least, more reserves should be set up so that wild animals can live safely.
I hope these measures will make us live in harmony with wildlife.

One possible version:
The next morning, Anna went to Mrs. Smith’s house again. “I think you overpaid me last night,” she said and handed the one-hundred-dollar bill to her. Mrs. Smith looked surprised. “I didn’t know where that money had gone! I knew that I had put it in my purse. Then this morning, I couldn’t find it.” She started to cry. “It’s the last payment for something my husband needed. I made a mistake of giving you the one hundred dollars, but you are such an honest and kind girl that you did not keep it.”
Mrs. Smith opened her purse and counted out ten dollars. “I hope you’ll baby-sit for us again. Our children think you’re the best baby-sitter they’ve ever had, and so do I. I think they will be proud of having such a great sister to baby-sit them!” Anna said yes and went back home happily. When she gave her mother the ten dollars, the best gift for her, she felt very proud because she thought she did a great a job.
