Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN set the day in 1979. It’s used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger.
Today, there are still over 700 million hungry people in the world. Many children go to sleep with hunger, and about 10 million of them die of hunger each year.
One reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t eat it before it goes bad. A person throws away about 50 kg of food on average every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year.
So think twice next time when you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste, we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat in a restaurant. If you can’t eat all you order, take the rest home. Don’t be too picky (挑剔的) about food so that you don’t leave any on your plate. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
26.How much food does a person throw away on average every year?
A.About 25 kg. B.About 50 kg. C.About 75 kg. D.About 100 kg.
27.What can be inferred from the text about reducing food waste?

B.There will be an increase in food production costs.
C.It encourages people to buy more food than needed.
D.Fewer and fewer farmers are willing to farm.
28.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The ways of cooking food correctly. B.The advice about saving money.
C.The ways of reducing food waste. D.The advice about eating healthily.

As my teacher called the students’ names, I was sitting there. The students went to receive their report cards happily. I watched their faces with envy and remembered my poor result last year. Since then, I have worked hard, but I wasn’t sure if I had made any progress.
I was too worried to hear my teacher call my name, and my classmate pushed me heavily. I tried my best to keep my cool and walked towards the teacher’s desk. The desk was only two meters away, but it seemed to be a long way for me to go.
Time seemed to stop. My heart was beating fast and my hands were shaking badly when I received my report card. My teacher was saying something, but I was so nervous that I couldn’t hear her. Soon, thunderous applause (雷鸣般的掌声) brought me out of the darkness, and I heard my teacher say, “Wonderful job!”
When I opened my report card, I discovered an “A” on it. I couldn’t believe my eyes until I gave it a second look. Then all my fears disappeared. I felt like I was flying in the air. I heard birds singing.
Perhaps they were also congratulating me on my success. I was so glad that my hard work paid off.

“Let’s brainstorm together!” You might often hear your teachers encouraging group discussions to solve problems. But is brainstorming really the best way to solve creative challenges?
The Dutch company WeTransfer did a study with 20,000 people from 197 countries and places. Most of them worked in creative fields, such as writing and music. The results showed that brainstorming is often not helpful for solving creative problems.
“While teamwork is important for bringing ideas to life, it isn’t very good for coming up with first ideas.” said Rob Alderson.
Alderson added that giving people enough time and space to think alone can lead to better ideas. Even Alex Osborn, who popularized brainstorming, believed that thinking alone was part of his creative process (过程).
However, most companies don’t provide their workers with enough chances to develop their ideas independently. Instead, they often hold too many meetings, which can get in the way of creativity, according to the study. More than 40% of participants (参与者) said meetings are a block to good thinking.
Spending time alone helps you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking, which is important for decision-making. Nearly 80% of the people in WeTransfer’s study said they trust their own feelings and research when judging ideas.
33.What did WeTransfer’s study find about brainstorming?
A.It’s the best way to solve problems. B.It’s often not helpful for creative problems.
C.It’s only useful for non-creative work. D.It’s important for first ideas.
34.Why is spending time alone good for creativity?
A.It avoids teamwork. B.It helps create first ideas.
C.It makes meetings better. D.It reduces need for research.
35.How might companies block creativity?
A.By forcing workers to think alone. B.By too much brainstorming.
C.By not having enough meetings. D.By not allowing independent idea time.
36.What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To tell stories behind brainstorming. B.To introduce an important survey.
C.To show the value of thinking alone. D.To describe teamwork in creativity.

China has made great progress in controlling deserts over the past 30 years. Through hard work and smart plans, large areas of deserts have been turned into green lands.
One famous example is the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This success story shows how deserts can become useful lands. By planting special grasses and trees, people have fixed moving sand and increased forest coverage from 5% to 53% since 1988. Local farmers now grow fruits like grapes in this “green wall”, which also helps their income.
Science and technology play key roles in this fight. The government has used both traditional and modern methods. In Ningxia, workers lay wheat straw (稻草) in checkerboard patterns (棋盘格) to hold sand. This low-cost sand-fixing technology is now used in 13 countries. Satellites and drones (无人机) help monitor plant growth across 176 million hectares of protected land.
More than 200 million people have joined tree-planting activities. Since 2000, China has reduced desert areas by over 2,000 square kilometers yearly—the fastest rate in the world. The “Great Green Wall” project aims to plant 35 billion trees by 2050.
China’s experience brings hope to other countries. These efforts not only improve the environment but also share knowledge globally. China has trained over 2,000 experts (专家) from Africa and the Middle East, showing that deserts can be changed into rich land with determination.
41.According to Paragraph 2, what change has happened to the forest coverage in the Kubuqi Desert since 1988?
42.What do workers in Ningxia do to fix sand?
43.How does China help other countries?

A.More food will be available for those in need.
【答案】26.B 27.A 28.C

29.This story may happen ______.
A.at home B.in the morning C.in the playground D.after an examination
30.Why did not the writer hear his teacher call his name?

【答案】33.B 34.B 35.D 36.C
【导语】本文通过WeTransfer的研究及相关分析,表明头脑风暴对解决创造性问题作用有限,凸显独自思考的价值。
33.细节理解题。根据“The results showed that brainstorming is often not helpful for solving creative problems.”可知,WeTransfer的研究发现头脑风暴对解决创造性问题通常没有帮助,故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“Alderson added that giving people enough time and space to think alone can lead to better ideas.”以及第五段“Spending time alone helps you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking”可知,独自思考能帮助产生更好的想法,有助于创造力,故选B。
35.细节理解题。根据“However, most companies don’t provide their workers with enough chances to develop their ideas independently. Instead, they often hold too many meetings, which can get in the way of creativity”可知,公司没有给员工足够的独立思考时间,而是开太多会,这阻碍了创造力,故选D。
36.主旨大意题。根据“Spending time alone helps you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking, which is important for decision-making.”及通读全文可知,文章重点强调“独自思考对创造力的价值”,故选C。

五、阅读短文,回答问题。前3题每题答案不超过10个词(共4小题;前3小题每题2分,第4小题3分,满分9分)
44.What do you think causes the spread of deserts? What can we do to help avoid it in our daily life? Write 30 words or more.
【答案】41.The forest coverage (in the Kubuqi Desert) has increased from 5% to 53% since 1988. 42.They lay wheat straw in checkerboard patterns. 43.By training experts. 44.I think cutting down trees is the big problem. In our daily life, we should plant more trees and don’t cut down trees because trees are very important to our environment, especially to control the sandstorm and the spread desert.(言之有理即可)
【导语】本文讲述了中国在过去30年中在控制沙漠化方面取得的显著进展,尤其是在库布齐沙漠的治理。

An Unforgettable Labor Experience
With May Day around the corner, it reminds me of an unforgettable labor experience.
Last autumn, I joined a volunteer activity about cleaning the city park. My task was to pick up litter along the paths and in the flower beds. At first, the terrible smell of the bin almost made me give up. The weather was hot, and my back was sore because of bending over for so long. However, as I kept working and saw the park gradually become cleaner, a strong sense of achievement sprang up within me. Every piece of trash that I picked up was a step towards a more beautiful environment. I realized that even small actions can lead to big changes.

D.Fewer and fewer farmers are willing to farm.
28.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

29.This story may happen ______.
A.at home B.in the morning C.in the playground D.after an examination

44.What do you think causes the spread of deserts? What can we do to help avoid it in our daily life? Write 30 words or more.
