Dahl discovered his passion for storytelling at a young age. His unique life experiences. including his time at boarding schools, inspired the vivid stories he would later create. After working for Shell Petroleum, Dahl turned to writing and published his first children's book, The Grenlins(1943), which was inspired by folk tales and commissioned(委托) by Walt Disney. However, it was his later works that truly established his reputation. Books like James and the Giant Peach and The BFG combined fantasy with dark humor, featuring brave children overcoming tough problems. One of Dahl's most popular works is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(1964). This timeless story explores themes of greed and morality through the eyes of Charlie Bucket, a poor but kind-hearted boy who wins a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka's magical chocolate factory. Inside the factory, Charlie meets other children who represent different negative qualities. In contrast, Charlie's modesty and kindness make him the perfect heir(继承人) to Wonka's factory. The book is filled with fantastical elements, such as eatable gardens and nut-sorting sauirrels, showcasing Dahl's limitless imagination. Dahl's writing process was as quirky as his stories. In the 196os, he transformed an old truck into a writing space, parking it in his garden in Great Missenden, Oxfordshire. There. he crafted tales of underdogs winning over greed and unfairness, such as in Danny the Champion of the World, where a father and son outsmart a wealthy landowner. Beyond children'sbooks, Dahl wrote screenplays, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, His adult short stories were also highly praised. Despite personal struggles, his work radiated humor and hope. In a poll commissioned by Canon UK, Dahl was voted "Britain's greatest storyteller", outshining even Dickens and J. K. Rowling. 【高二4月期中提升考·英语 第3页(共8页)】 25-X-635B 一红 夸克扫描王 极速扫描,就是高效 Roald Dahl's books have been translated into 63 languages and continue to inspire generations to embrace imagination, challenge unfairness and find joy in the unexpected. 24. His storytelling was highly regarded in Britain C Some people are no longer just brushing their teeth and turning off the lights before they go to sleep. Instead, they're wearing red-light glasses, tracking their sleep with apps, and taking various supplements(补充剂)-all so they can sleep better. This trend, called"sleepmaxxing", is popular online, with videos showing off people's long, detailed bedtime routines. Some follow simple sleep tips, like keeping a regular bedtime or avoiding screens before bed. Others take things further by eating certain foods, using weighted blankets, and even taping their mouths closed to improve their sleep. Experts say it's good that more people are focusing on improving their sleep, as it shows they understand how important rest is for their health. But do all these extra steps actually help? Some sleepmaxxing habits are supported by science. Both sleepmaxxers and experts agree that a cool, dark and quiet room helps with sleep. Avoiding blue light from screens before bed can also help since it affects melatonin, the sleep hormone(激素). And keeping a regular sleep schedule makes falling asleep easier. Other tricks, like sleep apps and weighted blankets, may help some people but don't work for everyone. Similarly, some studies show red light exposure before sleep helps, while others suggest it could keep the brain stimulated. And some trends could even be dangerous. Some sleepmaxxers tape their mouths shut to prevent mouth breathing, believing it will reduce snoring(打瓣) and dry mouth. However, experts warn this can be risky, especially for those with sleep apnea, a condition that causes breathing to stop and start during sleep. That's because there is evidence that sleep apnea symptoms, such as snoring, get worse in about a third of people who tape their mouths. While getting good sleep is important, experts say trying too hard can actually make things worse. Some people become so stressed about sleep that it affects their health-a condition known as orthosomnia. Remember, sleep should be restful, not stressful! 28. What is"sleepmaxxing”? A. A craze for improving sleep. B. A new type of exercise. C. A kind of sleep disorder. D. A medical treatment. 29. Which statement will the author probably agree with? A. All sleepmaxxing habits are supported by science. B. Sleep apps and weighted blankets work for everyone. C. A warm room is beneficial for sleep according to sleepmaxxers. D. While cold weather currently causes more deaths in Europe, researchers from the London School of Hygiene &. Tropical Medicine predict heat-related deaths will rise sharply as global warming speeds up. Using climate models and data from 854 cities, the study finds that as it warms, cold-related deaths decline slowly, but heat deaths rise rapidly. Southern Europe-including Italy, Spair and Greece-faces the highest risks. In contrast, Scandinavia and the UK may see fewer temperature-related deaths due to milder winters. However, even with strong emission cuts and improved adaptation efforts, overall temperature-related deaths will still increase as the planet warms. The Mediterranean region, described as a "climate hotspot",1s warming faster than other areas. Malta, for example, could see heat deaths rise by 269 per 1oo, ooo people by 2100 while Ireland's rate might drop slightly. Wealthier Western European countries are in a better situation to adapt than Eastern Europe. Recent heatwaves have already caused thousands of deaths in Europe, such as the 2003 event that killed around 70, ooo. Major southern cities like Barcelona, Rome and Naples could face hundreds of thousands of additional deaths this century. Without urgent action, the study estimates over 5. 8 million heat-related deaths linked to climate change, though colder regions might see 3. 5 million fewer cold-related deaths. Experts emphasize the need for adaptation strategies, such as air conditioning, green spaces and cooling centers, especially in aging populations and older cities with limited facilities. Southern Europe's combination of extreme heat, older housing and low air conditioning use makes it highly endangered. “Temperatures in cities like Rome already reach dangerous levels," says Dr. Courtney Howard, a climate health expert. "This poses severe risks for older adults and those without cooling options." The study highlights the urgent need for global emission reductions and local climate planning to protect communties from rising heat threats. 32. What can be learned about the changes in temperature-related deaths in Europe? A. Both tvpes of deaths increase egually B. Cold deaths will grow considerably by 21oo. C. Cold-related deaths disappear completely. D. Heat deaths rise faster than the decline in cold deaths 33. What makes Eastern Europe less adaptable than Western Europe to rising heat? A. Warmer climate. B. Limited financial resources. C. Aging populations. D. Relaxed emission policies. 34. What does the reference to the 2oo3 heatwave illustrate? A. Benefits of green spaces. B. Success of cooling centers. C. Deadly impact of extreme heat D. Historic decrease in cold deaths 【高二4月期中提升考·英语 第5页(共8页)) 25-X-635B 一红 夸克扫描王 极速扫描,就是高效 35. What is the best title for the text? A. When my ship finally reached Legazpi City, I decided to watch a newly released movie at a local cinema with my friend, Jake. After months of sailing through rough waters, we were both ready to relax. Before going to the cinema, we exchanged some money for local currency(货币). With cash in hand, we walked through the busy streets. The colorful local handicrafts(手工艺品) in store windows attracted us. We couldn't help stopping by different stores to shop. After we finished shopping, we headed straight to the cinema. The movie was great. As we left the cinema, we were so excited that we talked nonstop about the exciting plot, cool special effects and great acting. We were so absorbed in chatting that we didn't realize we'd walked onto strange streets. We kept chatting as we walked, and suddenly we had no idea where we were. It got dark. The winding roads n Legazpi confused us, and we couldn't remember how to return to our hotel. As we worriedly argued about which way to take, cars drove by, and the noise from passers-by made us even more confused. Just then, Ben, a friendly taxi driver, noticed us. He pulled up next to us and asked. "You guys seem lost. Need a ride?" We were relieved and said yes right away, telling him the name of our hotel. On the way, we talked with Ben. He told us interesting stories about the city, and we shared our experiences at sea. When we arrived at the hotel, we reached for our wallets to pay him. But we realized we had no local money left. We looked at each other, feeling awkward. We started searching through our bags, hoping to find something valuable. Ben just smiled and said,"Don't worry about it. Consider it a welcome gift to Legazpi."We were very thankful and asked for his contact information, promising to pay him back. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next day, we managed to exchange some money at a local bank In no time, Ben dropped us off at the boarding area. 第8页(共8页)) 【高二4月期中提升考·英语 25-X-635B 一进 夸克扫描王 极速扫描,就是高效 2024~2025学年第二学期高二4月期中提升考·英语 参考答案,提示及评分细则 听力部分录音稿 (Text 1) W: Did you go to the concert last night? The survey was conducted by China's online education platform SmartStudy. com. It was based on answers from 3, 2o5 parents from Aug. 1 to 15 through online questionnaires. The top three factors causing anxiety in parents are school performance, campus safety and mobile phone addiction. According to the survey, 68 percent of parents felt "very anxious" and "anxious" about their children's education, while only 6 percent were "not anxious". They are anxious most when their children are in kindergarten and primary school. More than 44 percent of parents believe learning beyond textbooks is very necessary, and 67 percent agree that taking training classes after school is better for a child's learning path.
