We had our own large vegetable garden which was able to supply us with most of our vegetable needs. We had chickens and ducks for eggs and occasionally meat, and chicken poo (粪便) would make great fertilizer for our garden. We did all these out of complete necessity — my family was poor. My father was extremely clever, and growing our food meant we didn’t have to worry about buying it. In saying that, I feel pretty comfortable around plants. There is a calmness that I feel when I am around plants and nature in general. I feel like my plants are a part of me — an extension of my relationship with the earth. I have had the pleasure of reading a plant book recently, which I would like to share with you if you are interested in making your home a little greener, also, making sure you know how to look after your plant babies once you get them. This book, Urban Botanics: An Indoor Plant Guide for Modern Gardeners, is a comprehensive compendium (汇编) of plants, with detailed instructions on how to care for each, alongside stunning full-page watercolour illustrations of each plant. Whether you are looking to cultivate an entire indoor garden, or simply wish to know more about your single cactus, you can be sure to find the right information for you among the more than seventy plants in this stylish guide. And the best bit? All the plants are easy to maintain so even the most timid of gardeners can enjoy turning their hand to green-fingered pastime. Driven by the beautiful artwork of the phenomenally talented Maaike Koster, alongside insightful text from Emma Sibley, each entry offers a concise but complete guide to these plants, telling you their origins, how to care for them and where in your home they will thrive. The accessible text and simple instructions make this book just as well suited to those with no gardening experience as to those with years of practice. Plants add interest, quiet and colour to every corner of our lives, so embark on a green adventure with this beautiful and comprehensive guide! 4. Why did the author’s family raise vegetables and poultry? A. To enhance the author’s sense of cooperation. B. To get close to nature. C. To have them exchanged for money. D. To meet their basic family needs. 5. How do plants and nature make the author feel? A. Doubtful. B. Peaceful. C. Content. D. Thrilled. 6. What can we infer from paragraph 3 about the book? A. It contains pictures as well as instructions. B. It offers readers information concerning 70 plants. C. It is thought highly of by the author. D. It is an outdoor plant guide for inexperienced gardeners. 7 What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To advocate reading the book. B. To call for readers to grow more plants. C. To highlight the benefits of going on an adventure. D. To introduce the content of a book C Some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) have become increasingly popular and range from chips to microwave meals and even bread. Even just a casual glance at supermarket shelves reveals a collection of UPF offerings in their delicate and attractive packaging. Besides their affordability, UPF not only offer time-saving convenience, but also momentary satisfaction filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives. After all, who can resist enjoying a tasty snack when lost in a football game or an exciting new TV series? Although much is discussed about the direct negative impact of these products on our health, including obesity (肥胖症), heart diseases and diabetes (糖尿病), little has been said about the impacts of UPF on the environment. The most serious environmental impacts of UPF-rich diets mainly come from the post-farm stages, especially from the final product creation and packaging processes. One specific additive that has the most environmental impact is palm oil. Palm oil is responsible for deforestation (森林砍伐) of some of the world’s big forests, which have diverse animals and plants. It is one of the world’s most consumed vegetable oils that can be found in half of our food. The massive waste generated by over-packaged UPF is another factor to consider. Their plastic packaging doesn’t degrade (降解) in landfills or in nature and has a dramatic impact on soil health and life in the sea. One recent study published in Nature Sustainability demonstrates that UPF processing and packaging stages have the greatest environmental impacts of the whole system and are a major source of environmental waste worldwide. The environmental impact of ultra-processed foods cannot be ignored any longer. As we become more and more conscious about what we buy and how it is produced, we hold the responsibility to advocate for change. 8. What can we know about UPF from the first paragraph? A. They are cheap. B. They are not popular. C. They are always healthy. D. They are attractive in color. 9. What is the main cause of the environmental impact of UPF? A. Palm oil. B. Plastic packaging. C The post-farm stages. D. Final product creation and packaging. 10. What does the underlined word “landfills” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Places where waste is buried underground. B. Areas in the sea where plastic waste floats. C. Natural forests where plastic can degrade easily. D. Factories that produce large amounts of plastic packaging. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards the environmental impact of UPF? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Indifferent. D Marketers are increasingly focused on creating social media content to capture user attention and drive engagement with the content. One proven strategy to increase such engagement is using social media images. A 2021 report by a social media management software company found that nearly 53% of content marketers consider images crucial for achieving their social media goals, and approximately 70% of social media users prefer interacting with image-based posts over text-only content. Despite this clear preference for social media images, there has been little research about which specific image characteristics most effectively boost user engagement and when that engagement takes place. The new study by Vamsi Kanuri clarifies how color complexity affects user engagement on social media. Posts containing complex images with more varied color patterns tend to capture greater user attention and lead to increased engagement, according to lead author Kanuri. The significance of color in marketing is well-documented, influencing everything from brand perception to purchase intentions. However, the particular role of color complexity in social media engagement had not been explored before Kanuri and his team turned their attention to it. The study found that using larger images with greater color complexity in the text content leads to better user engagement. For marketers and content creators, the effects are clear, Kanuri says. “It’s crucial to combine image characteristics with other post features and to be mindful of the timing and context of social media interactions.” Kanuri encourages marketers to integrate these insights into their content strategies and continue to learn about factors that affect how users interact with their posts. “By doing so, they can expand their social media influence and achieve greater success in their digital marketing efforts.” he says. 12 Why does the author mention a 2021 report in paragraph 2? A. To stress the significance of doing research. B. To promote the use of text-only content. C. To prove the previous statement. D. To present some editing techniques. 13. What can we learn about the Vamsi Kanuri-led study? A. It reveals how color complexity influences users’ media. B. It is based on sufficient relevant research previously done. C. It boosts the public’s attention to social media. D. It centers on social media’s impact on people’s health. 14. What does the last paragraph talk about? A. Social media content creators’ anxiety. B. Kanuri’s appeal to marketers. C. Limitations of social media. D. Methods of tapping into social media. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Ecology. B. Health. C. Education. D. Commerce. I got afraid when I was going to join Thompson Rivers University here in Canada. Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice, I seldom smiled. Every day I would sit at the desk, staring into textbooks and exercises, motionless and heavy-hearted. However, my classmates were in a different picture. They were playing, laughing and chatting delightedly. Besides, I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions, loudly and confidently. Obviously, I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class. Life is harder for senior students. Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests. Every time when the scores came out mine wouldn’t be the first or second but last. I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams, which I seemingly would never do well in. I was under a lot of pressure, feeling like a fish being fried in a pan. Hanging over me was a dark cloud. The only dim light came from Mr. Smith. Every time I stepped into the classroom, he welcomed me with a warm smile; every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window, his caring eyes would draw me back to his class. Besides, he was the only teacher who invited me to the office, talking about my studies and scores. I remembered when I came out of his office, I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder. I was feeling everything was changing for the better. I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester, desiring to prove that I was not the last one. So before Mr. Smith told us the test result, I was expecting something good in store for me. But I was still the last one in the class. A burst of sadness and shame consuming me, I was heartbroken. Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, the college admission letter came. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年度第二学期期中考试 高二年级英语试卷 考试时间:2025年4月15日 下午14:00—16:00 试卷满分:150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. 7. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To advocate reading the book. B. To call for readers to grow more plants. C. To highlight the benefits of going on an adventure. D. To introduce the content of a book 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. My father was extremely clever, and growing our food meant we didn’t have to worry about buying it. 根据第一段中“There is a calmness that I feel when I am around plants and nature in general. 根据第三段“This book, Urban Botanics: An Indoor Plant Guide for Modern Gardeners, is a comprehensive compendium (汇编) of plants, with detailed instructions on how to care for each, alongside stunning full-page watercolour illustrations of each plant. Whether you are looking to cultivate an entire indoor garden, or simply wish to know more about your single cactus, you can be sure to find the right information for you among the more than seventy plants in this stylish guide. A。 C Some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed. C. The post-farm stages. A 9. C 10. A 11. 根据文章第一段“Besides their affordability, UPF not only offer time-saving convenience, but also momentary satisfaction filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives.(除了价格实惠之外,超加工食品不仅提供了节省时间的便利,还能凭借其中的脂肪、糖分、盐分和添加剂带来瞬间的满足感。)” 故选A。 根据文章第二段“The most serious environmental impacts of UPF-rich diets mainly come from the post-farm stages, especially from the final product creation and packaging processes.(富含超加工食品的饮食对环境最严重的影响主要来自农场后的加工阶段,尤其是最终产品的制作和包装过程。)” 根据划线单词所在句“The massive waste generated by over-packaged UPF is another factor to consider. Their plastic packaging doesn’t degrade (降解) in landfills or in nature and has a dramatic impact on soil health and life in the sea.(过度包装的超加工食品产生的大量垃圾是另一个需要考虑的因素。 A“Places where waste is buried underground.(垃圾被埋在地下的地方)”与此相符。故选A。 根据文章最后一段“The environmental impact of ultra-processed foods cannot be ignored any longer. As we become more and more conscious about what we buy and how it is produced, we hold the responsibility to advocate for change.(超加工食品对环境的影响再也不容忽视了。 B。 D Marketers are increasingly focused on creating social media content to capture user attention and drive engagement with the content. 12. Why does the author mention a 2021 report in paragraph 2? A. Ecology. B. Health. C. Education. D. Commerce. C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据文章第一段“Marketers are increasingly focused on creating social media content to capture user attention and drive engagement with the content. One proven strategy to increase such engagement is using social media images. 而文章第二段“A 2021 report by a social media management software company found that nearly 53% of content marketers consider images crucial for achieving their social media goals, and approximately 70% of social media users prefer interacting with image-based posts over text-only content.(一家社交媒体管理软件公司在2021年发布的一份报告发现,近53%的内容营销人员认为图片对于实现他们的社交媒体目标至关重要,大约70%的社交媒体用户更倾向于与基于图片的帖子互动,而非纯文本内容。)” 根据文章第二段“The new study by Vamsi Kanuri clarifies how color complexity affects user engagement on social media.(Vamsi Kanuri的这项新研究阐明了色彩复杂度是如何影响社交媒体上的用户参与度的。)”以及第三段“Posts containing complex images with more varied color patterns tend to capture greater user attention and lead to increased engagement, according to lead author Kanuri.(该研究的第一作者Kanuri表示,包含具有更多样化色彩模式的复杂图片的帖子往往能吸引更多的用户关注,并提高用户的参与度。)”和“The study found that using larger images with greater color complexity in the text content leads to better user engagement.(研究发现,在文本内容中使用更大且色彩复杂度更高的图片会带来更好的用户参与度。)” 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Kanuri encourages marketers to integrate these insights into their content strategies and continue to learn about factors that affect how users interact with their posts. “By doing so, they can expand their social media influence and achieve greater success in their digital marketing efforts.” he says.(Kanuri鼓励营销人员将这些见解融入他们的内容策略中,并继续了解影响用户如何与他们的帖子进行互动的各种因素。 I got afraid when I was going to join Thompson Rivers University here in Canada. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考答案 Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office. Hesitantly, I walked into the office. Mr. Smith greeted me with a smile. As he began talking, not about my grades or mistakes, but about my potential and perseverance, it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one. He didn’t blame me. Instead, he praised my resilience and determination. He encouraged me to embrace my struggles, reminding me that success was never a straight path. In his eyes, I could see his belief in me, and I knew I should never quit. Finally, the college admission letter came. I held it in my shaking hands, doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy. But as I opened the envelope, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Despite all the odds, I got admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time. It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night, a reward for the perseverance I didn’t know I had until Mr. Smith showed me. Tears welling up in my eyes. Mr. Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time. 词汇激活 行为类 ①邀请:invite/call in/ask for ②鼓励:encourage/inspire/urge ③收到:receive/get/obtain 情绪类 ①喜悦:delight/happiness/joy ②感激:gratitude/appreciation/thankfulness 【点睛】[高分句型1].
