Many people believe that goldfish only have a seven-second memory, but Roy Stokes, a 15-year-old schoolboy from Australian Science and Mathematics School has just finished an experiment to tell us that it is not true. He shows everybody that goldfish are smarter than we think.
“I don’t believe that they have a seven-second memory because animals need their memories, so they can know where the food is,” he said.
He did the experiment in a small tank of goldfish. “I decided to get a red logo and just feed them next to the logo. Every day I put it in and dropped food around it,” he said.
“At first they were a bit afraid of it, but by the end of the three weeks, they were actually almost coming before I put the food in.”
After leaving the goldfish alone for a week, Roy put the red logo in the tank again.
“They remembered perfectly well,” he said. “They actually had a time faster than the three feeds before I left.”
The goldfish showed that they not only could store information, but also had the ability to get it back at a later date.
Colum Brown, a researcher at Macquarie University in Sydney, has studied fish behavior for more than ten years. Long ago, Bluebird’s (蓝知更鸟) feathers were the color of dust (灰尘). She did not like her ugly color. She was attracted by the color of the lake near her home. It was as blue as the sky after a storm. Bluebird wanted to be the color of that beautiful lake very much.
Flapping her wings one morning, Bluebird flew from her tree to the blue lake. Then she bathed (洗澡) in the water three times. After each bath, she sang, “Blue water. Still water. I went in. I am blue.” Bluebird repeated this every morning. On the third day, she came out of the lake with beautiful blue feathers.
Now Coyote (郊狼) was a trickster (骗子) and he’s hungry too. He stayed behind Bluebird’s tree for a long time every day and watched her go to the lake. He pretended (伪装) to be interested in everything she did. He wanted Bluebird for lunch, but he was afraid of the blue water. On the third morning, Coyote saw Bluebird come out of the lake with beautiful blue feathers. Impressed, he sat next to Bluebird’s tree and waited for her. When she returned, he asked, “How did you get blue feathers? I want to be blue like the mountains too.” Bluebird didn’t believe Coyote, but she taught him how to bathe three times each morning and how to sing her song. Coyote did what she said, and after three days of bathing in the lake, his white fur turned deep blue.
Convinced (确信的) that blue fur was even more beautiful than blue feathers. Coyote forgot all about being hungry. He ran as fast as he could to the top of the hill. Standing on his back legs, he raised his front legs off the ground and howled (嚎叫). But Coyote slipped (滑倒) and rolled down the hill. He couldn’t stop himself, and the dust and dirt covered his new blue fur. He rolled and rolled until he hit into Bluebird’s tree heavily. No matter how much he tried, foolish Coyote could not shake the dust from his fur. And so the fur of all coyotes has the dull color of dust to this very day.

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is happy with a grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend told a funny joke. People smile for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are happy. There are other good reasons to smile often.
First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. In fact, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to smile. On the other hand, it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness. So give the muscles in your face a rest and smile!
Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing nice clothes. However, there is a famous saying: a smile is the best thing a person can wear. That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy all the time.
Third, smiles are helpful. Both smiling and laughing can quickly spread from one person to another. If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly, when a person laughs, people tend to laugh with them. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is to share a smile or laugh. It is the easiest and cheapest way to cheer someone up.
Finally, smiling and laughing are very good for the body. Even if you are mad or sad, try smiling. You’ll find that it will be hard to stay mad or sad for very long.
27. In what situation does a smile show that a person is happy?
A. When he makes 43 muscles on the face work together.
B. When he is happy with the grades on the tests.
C. When his friend tells him a scary story.
D. When someone around him is sad.
28. Which of the following is mentioned as a reason to smile?
A. It is polite. B. It is quiet. C. It is free. D. It is easy.
29. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A. It takes fewer muscles to smile than to show unhappiness.
B. No one wants to be around the people who are happy.
C. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is to have a rest.
D. If you are angry or sad, you’d better not smile.

He says his studies show that fish are smart and that they know how to avoid enemies (躲避敌人) and catch food like any other animal. As an experienced expert, Colum thinks that Roy’s experiment is really good.

23 What does “this” refer to?

Finally smiling and laughing are very good for the body.
30. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
