It’s only a small discount, but the scholarship means she’ll skip the waiting list provided my husband and I can cover$20, 000 a year. Should we pay the private school fees, or choose free education instead? I always assumed my children would go to a private school, like I did. Not because my family is wealthy, but because I believe that the best education is private. It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary schoo1. They’ll go to a private high school, I told myself. Yet here we are. My eldest is now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will struggle to afford private schoo1. If we’re to send our girl to private school, I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a solid income, but that’s not quite how it turned out. The guilt and expectations are mine alone. I’m terrified that my daughter’s potential will be wasted at the public schoo1. And yet, I know that working more hours will make me break down. During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can’t sacrifice everything for my precious girl. I explain that I want to be a positive role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is terrible strain on a family. I point out not even the privilege of private school will protect my children from disappointment or struggle. And ultimately, it’s decided. My daughter is going to the public school behind our home. She couldn’t be more pleased. It’s taken me a little longer, but now I’m content. More than my fancy private school education, it’s my family that shaped me. With high school now 25 years in the past, I can no longer remember the mathematical problems and Shakespearean quotes I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my childhood home, however, have proved impossible to forget. 14. Why did the author want her daughter to go to a private school at first? A. Her daughter earned an academic scholarship. B. She wanted her daughter to receive the best education. C. She wanted her daughter to skip the waiting list. D. Her daughter’s potential was wasted at the public primary schoo1. 15. The author finally let her daughter go to a public school mainly because she realized that______________. A. private school doesn’t guarantee a solid income B. she didn’t want her daughter to struggle in private school C. however hard she worked, she couldn’t afford private school D. public school is the most balanced choice for her family 16. When the decision was made, ___________. A. the author’s daughter was disappointed B. the author felt sorry and guilty about it C. both the author and her daughter were satisfied with the result D. the author inspired her daughter to be a positive role model at school 17. What is the main message the author intends to convey in the last paragraph? A. Family influences a child’s growth more than school education. B. The lessons learned during our childhood will stay with us forever. C. It always takes people a long time to make a fight decision. D. Private school education is not as good as people expect. B Art has always been a polarizing(分化的)subject. Some people like realism, others like abstract. But do you know why some people value art in the millions, while others see the same piece as little more than a child’s finger painting? Many consider art to be quite random in terms of our likes and dislikes. But according to new research, there may actually be a scientific reason behind our fondness for certain works. The answer lies in how a person’s brain breaks down the visuals(视觉效果)of a painting combined with their judgment. To prove their theory, neuroscientist(神经科学家)Kiyohito Iigaya and his team from the California Institute of Technology(Caltech)gathered more than 1,300 volunteers and asked them to rate 825 different paintings from four different art genres(类型). After analyzing the data, scientists found that the same groups of people tended to prefer similar aspects of the same paintings. These characteristics were then grouped into“low-level”features like color and blending,and“high-level”features like the emotion behind the painting. From this experiment,Caltech’s system was then able to predict an individual’s specific taste in art and organize different works into one group, according to the paintings’features and volunteers’preferences. In a second test, researchers repeated the experiment on six volunteers, showing each 1,000 paintings while inside an MRI—a machine that scans a person’s brain activity. The test revealed(揭示)that the different features of a painting are sent to the part of the brain that deals with valuing items, allowing someone to form their overall opinion. Finally, the team repeated the first test on new volunteers.Again, the algorithm(算法)was able to accurately predict individuals’art preferences.According to Iigaya, this shows that the factors that contribute to whether a person likes an image are universal, not random. Lesley Fellows,a neurologist at McGill University who studies value judgments, stated,“We know a lot about‘how’the brain carries out actions, but‘why’is far less well understood.” 18. What did the Caltech team try to discover? A. What kinds of artwork appeal to people. B. Why only some people value art. C. Whether an individual’s preference for art is predictable. D. Whether one’s mood influences their opinion of artwork. 19. How did the Caltech team’s first experiment help their second test? A. Some features of paintings were categorized(分类). B. It helped decide the types of paintings to be used. C. Part of the brain to process paintings was identified. D. Volunteers were grouped based on their response. 20. What did the Caltech team find from their second test? A. The brain reacted differently to different paintings. B. MRIs influence people’s opinion of paintings. C. Individuals have different valuing systems in their brain. D. A certain part of the brain helps people judge paintings. 21. Why does the author quote Lesley Fellows’words in the last paragraph? A. To question the Caltech team’s research. B. To approve of the research on why we make value judgments. C. To show there is still a lot left to learn about the brain. D. To point out the focus of the future brain research. C Characters in novels don't always do what the writer wants them to do. Sometimes they cause trouble, take on lives of their own, or even work against the writer. It's not just a problem for inexperienced authors: famed children's novelist Roald Dahl said he got the main character in his book Matilda so “wrong” that when he'd finished his first version, he threw it away and started again. Of course it's not the characters' fault. The problem lies with the author. Take Stephen King, who admitted that writing working-class characters is more difficult nowadays because his own circumstances have changed. “It is definitely harder,” King said. “When I wrote Carrie many years ago, I was one step away from physical labour.” This is also true for characters' ages, added King. “When you have small children, it is easy to write young characters because you observe them and you have them in your life all the time. But your kids grow up. It's been harder for me to write about this little 12-year-old girl in my new book because my models are gone.” For other authors, such as Karen Fowler, there's one quality that can stop a character in its tracks: “boredom”. “I had particular problems with the main character in my historical novel Sister Noon, she says.” She had attitudes about race and religion that seemed appropriate to me for her time and class, but they were not attitudes I liked. Eventually I grew quite bored with her. You can write a book about a character you dislike or a character you disagree with, but I don't think you can write a book about a character who bores you.” According to Neel Mukherjee, it was Adinath, a character in The Lives of Others, who made him work the hardest. “I think I struggled because it's difficult to write a character whose most prominent personal feature is weakness, as Adinath's is, without making that feature define him,” Mukherjee says. But a troublesome character is far from an unwelcome guest, he continues, arguing that “when characters work against the author they come alive and become unpredictable.” “That is a fantastic thing to happen, ”Mukherjee says, “I celebrate it. It is one of the great, lucky gifts given to a writer.” 22 What can we infer about Steven King’s book Carrie? A. It was his most difficult book to write. B. It was the first successful novel King wrote. C. There were few children featured in the story. D. Some of its main characters were working class. 23. Why did Karen Fowler have trouble writing the main character in her novel Sister Noon? A She disagreed with the character’s attitudes. B. The age difference between the two was too large. C. She found the character very uninteresting. D. The historical setting made accuracy difficult. 24. Neel Mukherjee believes that his difficult-to-write characters ______ . A. are a sign that the story is not realistic. B. are often the most interesting. C. should be praised by all authors. D. need to be researched more thoroughly. 25. The authors who were interviewed for the passage are probably ______ . A. famous and successful. B. unknown to the readers. C. all from the same country. D. just starting their writing careers. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As most of us know, talking to and listening to parents don’t always go smoothly. A. booked B. has been booked C. was being booked D. has booked 【答案】B 【解析】 【详解】考查时态语态。句意:——我们能坐那里吗?——抱歉先生,靠窗的桌子已经被预订了。根据“I’m sorry”可知,表示过去动作对现在造成的影响,用现在完成时,table与book为被动关系。故选B项。 13. The ______ look on her face suggested that she ______ it before. A. surprising; wouldn’t know B. surprised; shouldn’t know C. surprising; hadn’t known D. surprised; hadn’t known 【答案】D 【解析】 【详解】考查形容词辨析和时态。 第三部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分42.5分) 第一节 (共12小题,满分30分) A My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship to a private schoo1. 故选A项。 B Art has always been a polarizing(分化的)subject. Lesley Fellows,a neurologist at McGill University who studies value judgments, stated,“We know a lot about‘how’the brain carries out actions, but‘why’is far less well understood.” 18 What did the Caltech team try to discover? 【答案】18. C 19. A 20. D 21. It is one of the great, lucky gifts given to a writer.” 22. What can we infer about Steven King’s book Carrie? A. It was his most difficult book to write. B. It was the first successful novel King wrote. C. There were few children featured in the story. D. Some of its main characters were working class. 23. Why did Karen Fowler have trouble writing the main character in her novel Sister Noon? A. She disagreed with the character’s attitudes. 【答案】22. D 23. C 24. B 25. One morning when she came in late, Mr. Sharp, her teacher, burst into anger. Mr. Sharp told her, “I’ll write to your father if you aren’t here on time tomorrow.” Julia didn’t expect him to do that because her parents were very strict with her. So she said sorry and promised that she would be punctual from that moment on. The next day she got up very early and went to school without breakfast. When the bell rang, she had been seated in the classroom. The door opened and the teacher came in. But it wasn’t Mr. Sharp. It was Miss Young. Mr. Sharp was on business, so she was taking his class instead. How disappointed Julia was! The next morning Julia got up even earlier. After a quick breakfast she rushed to school. Just before she got to the school gate, she spotted a wallet lying on the ground. She picked it up. “Whose is this?” she wondered. As she stood there, there went the first bell. “What shall I do?” she hesitated. “I’ll turn in the wallet to the headmaster first,” she decided. And so she did. 注意:所续短文的词数为150左右。 Paragraph 1: When she hurried into the classroom, Mr. Sharp was already beginning his lesson. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: As soon as the bell rang for the break, the door opened and in came Mr. Sterling, the headmaster. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Paragraph 1: When she hurried into the classroom, Mr. Sharp was already beginning his lesson. Seeing her late again for class, he burst into anger, “You promised to be on time, but you are late again. I will write to your father after class!” She was about to explain when Mr. Sharp interrupted her, “I don’t want any of your excuses.” Her tears rolled down her cheeks, and she thought to herself, “That’s unfair. But what if he writes to my father? Will my father scold me? How will my mother punish me?” Paragraph 2: As soon as the bell rang for the break, the door opened and in came Mr. Sterling, the headmaster. With a wallet in his hand, he came up to Mr. Sharp, asking “Is this your wallet?” Though surprised, Mr. Sharp nodded. The headmaster continued, “You should thank Julia. She picked it up this morning and handed it in.” At this, Mr. Sharp realised he was totally wrong.
