S. marathons that are known for being fast. A1A Marathon Where: Fort Lauderdale, Florida When: February 17 If you want a fast course but don’t like downhill running, the flat and scenic A1A Marathon might be the one for you. You’ll feel the ocean breezes and see the palm trees on the route. The race provides plenty of entertainment, a beach-themed finisher medal, and a post-race beach party with food, beverages, beer, and live music for celebrating. Pocono Mountains Run for the Red Marathon Where: Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania When: May 19 The course begins at roughly 1946 feet above sea level — the highest point on the 26.2-mile route. From there, it’s smooth sailing down the mountain, where you’ll finish at a height of 400 feet. The marathon is held every May when trees and flowers are starting to grow thickly, making this course scenic. Bank of America Chicago Marathon Where: Chicago, Illinois When: October 13 The Chicago Marathon is a flat, fast marathon, so it’s a great one to do if you’ve never run a marathon or you’re trying to run your fastest time ever. In addition to its speed, the course offers a scenic tour of Chicago as it weaves through dozens of local and historic landmarks. Newport Marathon Where: Newport Oregon When: June 1 The Newport Marathon starts about 60 feet above sea level and has few gently rolling hills through a neighborhood. The flat marathon route hugs the Yaquina Bay for much of the race, providing you with amazing views of the water. Make sure you register early — the Newport Marathon limits the number of entries in an effort to keep the race more fun. 1. What is special about A1A Marathon? A. It is held annually in the U. S. B. It takes place along the ocean. C. It is not only flat but also scenic. D. It ends up with a special celebration. 2. Which course may be suitable for beginner? A. A1A Marathon. B. Newport Marathon. C. Bank of America Chicago Marathon. D. Pocono Mountains Run for the Red Marathon. 3. What is the text mainly intended to introduce? A. Some reasons for running marathons. B. Some fast marathon courses in the U. S. C. How to benefit from marathon running. D. How to choose proper marathon courses. D 2. C 3. 根据A1A Marathon部分“The race provides plenty of entertainment, a beach-themed finisher medal, and a post-race beach party with food, beverages, beer, and live music for celebrating. (比赛提供了大量的娱乐活动,一枚以海滩为主题的奖牌,以及赛后的海滩派对,有食物、饮料、啤酒和现场音乐庆祝)”可知,A1A马拉松的特别之处在于比赛结束后要举行一个海滩聚会,即以一次社交聚会结束。故选D。 【2题详解】 推理判断题。根据Bank of America Chicago Marathon部分“The Chicago Marathon is a flat, fast marathon, so it’s a great one to do if you’ve never run a marathon or you’re trying to run your fastest time ever. (芝加哥马拉松是一场平坦、快速的马拉松,所以如果你从未跑过马拉松,或者你想跑出你的最快成绩,这是一场很棒的马拉松)”可推知,芝加哥马拉松适合初学者。故选C。 【3题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“If you are one of those people who want to set a personal marathon record or run fast for your first marathon, check out these U. S. marathons that are known for being fast. (如果你是那些想要创造个人马拉松纪录或想在首次马拉松中跑得快的人之一,那么看看这些以速度快著称的美国马拉松赛事吧)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了美国的几个以速度快著称的马拉松赛事。故选B。 B She gave the 90s and 00s kids their first-ever BFF, a bespectacled wizard boy named Harry Potter. However, before hitting big-time success, Joanne Kathleen Rowling lived a life fraught with financial struggles and one personal crisis after the other. Rowling moved from the UK to Porto, Portugal, where she took up a job as an English teacher. It was there that she met her first husband, TV journalist Jose Arantes. The couple had a child named Jessica in July, 1993. However, the marriage didn’t last long. Within weeks Rowling and Jessica were on a plane back to the UK, along with the first three chapters of Harry Potter. Rowling faced tremendous poverty on her return to the UK. During that period, she lived off government welfare. Jobless, she spent her days at different cafes, tagging along her baby daughter Jessica, and wrote her first novel on a typewriter. Barely getting by with the help of friends and family — “as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless,” she later described it — Rowling found herself increasingly despondent, angry over her failures and guilty about an inability to provide for her daughter. J. K. Rowling’s Harry potter synopsis (摘要) was rejected in 1995 when it was sent for the first time to a publisher. The book was rejected by twelve publishers! It was finally accepted by Christopher Little, an obscure London literary agent. In 1996, Little agreed to publish 500 copies of the book, under the name J. K. Rowling. The “K” stands for Kathleen, her paternal grandmother’s name. It was added at her publisher’s request, who thought a book by an obviously female author might not attract the target audience of young boys. She got 2,500 pounds in advance. Six further titles followed in the Harry potter series, each achieving record-breaking success. 4. What does the underlined phrase “lived off” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Appealed to. B. Relied on. C. Adapted to. D. Called on. 5. What do we know about J. K. Rowling from paragraph 4? A. She had to sleep on the street in Britain. B. Her friends and family never offered help for her. C. She was depressed about her rough situation. D. She gave up her career dream because of her marriage. 6. What can we infer from the passage? A. Rowling left her daughter to her first husband. B. Rowling typed her first novel at restaurants. C. Rowling’s first book was not for girl’s taste. D. Rowling’s first book didn’t come out smoothly. 7. What can we learn from J. K. Rowling? A. Fame is a great thirst of the young woman. B. Success means getting personal desires satisfied. C. Positive thinking and action result in success. D. An unfortunate marriage contributes to success. B 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第四段“Barely getting by with the help of friends and family — “as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless,” she later described it-Rowling found herself increasingly despondent, angry over her failures and guilty about an inability to provide for her daughter.(在朋友和家人的帮助下勉强度日——“在现代英国,除了无家可归之外,能有多穷就有多穷,”她后来这样描述——罗琳发现自己越来越沮丧,对自己的失败感到愤怒,对自己无力抚养女儿感到内疚)”可知,J. K. Rowling’s Harry potter synopsis (摘要) was rejected in 1995 when it was sent for the first time to a publisher. The book was rejected by twelve publishers!( J·K·罗琳的《哈利·波特》简介在1995年第一次寄给出版商时被拒绝了。这本书被12家出版商拒绝出版!)”可推知,罗琳的第一本书出版得并不顺利。故选D。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章主要讲述了《哈利波特》作者J. K. 罗琳的个人经历,她曾经有过一段失败的婚姻,回到英国后面临着巨大的贫困。但是她没有放弃,坚持写作,最终取得了成功。由此可知,我们能从J. K.罗琳身上学到积极的思考和行动导致成功。故选C。 C Scientists have studied gossip for decades. That’s not surprising given the activity’s near universality in any social group, big or small. It’s estimated that more than 90 percent of people in workplaces in the U. S. and Western Europe indulge in such banter (玩笑) — defined as talking about someone not present. People in modern societies spend about an hour a day immersed in chin-wagging, one study reports. But investigators are now approaching this fixture of social life from a new perspective. In past decades, says Rice University psychologist Tianjun Sun, researchers focused primarily on the damage wrought by gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target — the person being talked about. Now, she says, they have changed course by looking more at the benefits of gossip and the dynamics of a three-part network that involves a gossiper, a listener and a target. This research is revealing the complex and diverse roles in shaping perceptions of self and others by looking at factors such as basic information, ego enhancement and social segregation (隔离) within a group. So what, if anything, can be good about gossip? Whenever someone confides something to you about someone you both know — whether the information is positive, negative or neutral — it brings the two of you closer, creating a social bond. According to one study, it even increases your liking for the spreader of the information. It helps you learn who to trust and who to avoid. It enforces group norms. For example, complaints about a co-worker who puts smelly banana peels in the paper trash are likely to get back to them and let them know that placing stinky garbage in the incorrect container is not an office norm. But gossip is a double-edged sword for each member of this equilateral triangle. Whether that sword aids or causes harm depends on a slew of factors, including the relationships among gossiper, listener and target, the motives of each person and the trustworthiness of the imparted info. The gossiper is the prime mover in this drama. So it’s not surprising that much of the social science research related to gossip has focused on why they do it, what they get out of it and what the attendant dangers are in doing it, if any. In its most benign form, Sun says, gossip creates a sense of connectedness and belonging. On the other hand, if what you’re sharing is injurious to the target, you may feel guilty. You may also feel anxious about repercussions, including retaliation (报复). There’s the further risk that listeners may form unwelcome impressions about you. 8. What has changed in recent studies about gossip compared to past research? A. Focus on workplace productivity. B. Switch from the damage to the benefits. C. Shift from two-part to three-part focus. D. Emphasis on the complex and diverse roles. 9. Which is the benefit of gossip mentioned in the article? A. Reinforcing group rules. B. Avoiding misunderstanding. C. Ensuring promotions. D. Removing close relationship. 10. Why is the gossip a‌ “double-edged sword” according to the paragraph 5? A. Balancing friendships and work. B. Depending on context and intention. C. Increasing the risk of tense relationship. D. Practicing secretly but being criticized. 11. What risk might a gossiper face according to the last paragraph? A. Legal punishment and guilt. B. Immediate target revenge. C. Negative listener judgment. D. Permanent social exclusion. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段中“In past decades, says Rice University psychologist Tianjun Sun, researchers focused primarily on the damage wrought by gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target — the person being talked about. Now, she says, they have changed course by looking more at the benefits of gossip and the dynamics of a three part network that involves a gossiper, a listener and a target.(莱斯大学心理学家孙天军表示,在过去几十年里,研究人员主要关注八卦造成的危害,他们只关注八卦传播者或被谈论的对象。她说,现在,他们改变了方向,更多地关注八卦的益处以及涉及传播者、倾听者和被谈论者的三方网络动态)”可知,与过去的研究相比,最近关于八卦的研究从关注两方转变为关注三方。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“It enforces group norms. For example, complaints about a co worker who puts smelly banana peels in the paper trash are likely to get back to them and let them know that placing stinky garbage in the incorrect container is not an office norm.(它强化了群体规范。例如,对一个把臭香蕉皮扔进废纸篓的同事的抱怨很可能会传到他们那里,让他们知道把发臭的垃圾放在错误的容器里不是办公室的规范)”可知,八卦的好处之一是强化群体规则。故选A项。 根据第四段中“But gossip is a double-edged sword for each member of this equilateral triangle. Whether that sword aids or causes harm depends on a slew of factors, including the relationships among gossiper, listener and target, the motives of each person and the trustworthiness of the imparted info.(但八卦对这个等边三角形的每一个成员来说都是一把双刃剑。 D In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers lofted a trio of farm animals over Versailles in a hot-air balloon, in what remains the most iconic demonstration of the power of lighter-than-air craft. Since then such vehicles have adapted to carry ever more — and ever more distinguished — passengers. But they have rarely been used to transport cargo. This is a wasted opportunity. Floating objects, whether boats, bubbles or blimps, can be moved and parked with relative ease. Because airships boast such exceptional “lift-to-drag ratios”, as engineers put it, they also consume relatively little fuel. This makes them — at least in theory-ideal freight vehicles. The big stumbling block so far has been the need for variable buoyancy (浮力): the ability to compensate for weight changes when loads are picked up and dropped off. Simply releasing the lighter-than-air “lifting gas” from the sacs in which it is held is a non-starter. Maintaining stockpiles wherever deliveries are made is logistically difficult and expensive (helium (氦气), the most commonly used lifting gas, now costs about $35 per cubic metre, the amount needed to lift a single kilogram). Now, however, a handful of firms say that they have devised feasible alternative systems for adjusting buoyancy. If their plans hold up, airships designed to move everything from felled trees to prefab buildings could soon take to the skies. One straightforward way to control buoyancy is to take on and release ballast (压舱物). Though large amounts of sand or dirt cannot be extracted or dumped at will, water is easier to handle. For that reason, Flying Whales, a company based near Paris, has designed a 200-metre-long “flying crane” helium airship called LCA60T to hold up to 60 tonnes of water ballast. Sébastien Bougon, the firm’s boss, reckons it would be practical for moving rocket sections and powerline towers; transporting logs from forests to saw-mills; and carrying heavy equipment like turbine blades and prefab hospitals to remote areas. With help from aerospace partners including Boeing, Pratt &Whitney and Thales, he hopes to have the first airship built and certified by early 2028. 12. What does the underlined world “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Argo Airship is not well designed. B. Argo airship hasn’t been fully used. C. Argo airship consumes relatively much fuel. D. Brothers lofted animals in a hot-air balloon. 13. Why is releasing helium directly a poor solution for buoyancy? A. Helium is costly and hard to store. B. Helium cannot lift heavy loads. C. Engineers prefer fuel efficiency. D. Helium may harm the environment. 14. What can be inferred about the future of airships from the text? A. They will completely replace trucks and ships. B. Their environmental impact will outweigh their benefits. C. They may become practical for specialized transport tasks. D. Their use will be limited to scientific research. 15. What is the article mainly about? A. Early experiments with lighter-than-air craft. B. The role of helium in adjusting buoyancy. C. Technical features and applications of a specific airship. D. Challenges and solutions in cargo airship design. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第一段“Since then such vehicles have adapted to carry ever more — and ever more distinguished — passengers. But they have rarely been used to transport cargo. (从那时起,这种车辆已经适应了搭载越来越多、越来越尊贵的乘客。但它们很少被用来运输货物)”以及第二段“This is a wasted opportunity.(这是一个被浪费的机会)”可知,This指的是上文提及的“飞艇没有被充分利用来运输货物”这一机会。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Maintaining stockpiles wherever deliveries are made is logistically difficult and expensive (helium (氦气), the most commonly used lifting gas, now costs about $35 per cubic metre, the amount needed to lift a single kilogram). (在任何交货地点维持库存,在后勤上都是困难和昂贵的(氦气是最常用的升力气体,现在每立方米的价格约为35美元,这是举起一公斤所需的量))”可知,直接释放氦气来调整浮力不是一个好方法,是因为氦气成本高且难以储存。故选A。 根据最后一段“Sébastien Bougon, the firm’s boss, reckons it would be practical for moving rocket sections and powerline towers; transporting logs from forests to saw-mills; and carrying heavy equipment like turbine blades and prefab hospitals to remote areas. (公司老板Sébastien Bougon认为,用它来移动火箭部件和电线杆塔、将木材从森林运送到锯木厂,以及将涡轮叶片和预制医院等重型设备运送到偏远地区是可行的)”可知,飞艇未来可能会用于专门的运输任务。故选C。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“Because airships boast such exceptional “lift-to-drag ratios”, as engineers put it, they also consume relatively little fuel. This makes them — at least in theory-ideal freight vehicles.(正如工程师所说,由于飞艇拥有如此特殊的“升阻比”,它们也消耗了相对较少的燃料。这使得它们——至少在理论上是理想的货运车辆)”、第三段“The big stumbling block so far has been the need for variable buoyancy (浮力): the ability to compensate for weight changes when loads are picked up and dropped off. (到目前为止,最大的障碍是需要可变浮力:在装卸货物时补偿重量变化的能力)”、第四段“Now, however, a handful of firms say that they have devised feasible alternative systems for adjusting buoyancy.(然而,现在有少数公司表示,他们已经设计出可行的替代系统来调节浮力)”以及最后一段“One straightforward way to control buoyancy is to take on and release ballast (压舱物).(控制浮力的一种直接方法是装载和释放压载物)”可知,文章主要讨论了货运飞艇设计面临的挑战以及提出的解决方案。 In today’s highly competitive world, where economies are becoming extremely complex, the cost of living has become extremely high. One afternoon while running through LAX to my plane, I tore one of my nylon stockings (尼龙袜). It was a really bad tear, and I wasn’t carrying another pair with me. Fortunately, there was a convenience store in the terminal (航空终点站) that was close to my gate where I knew I could buy a new pair. However, to my surprise, as I waited in line at the sales register, I discovered that I had no money in my purse. I thought to myself that maybe the store manager would sell me a pair of four-dollar nylons and let me pay her back the next time I saw her. I’ve been inside her store a lot, and she always smiles and is friendly to me, even though we’ve never been introduced. When it was my turn to pay, I showed her my leg and explained that I had no money on me. And that I was desperate. She laughed and simply said, “Take them.” Well, for whatever reason, two months passed, and I still had not paid the manager back the money I owed her. Then one day at work before my flight departed, I was busy doing my usual preflight preparations when a passenger asked me for a newspaper. There was no paper on the plane to give him. He then asked me if I wouldn’t mind going into the terminal to buy him one. I said, “Sure” and he handed me a quarter. I went off the airplane and walked to the same convenience store. Before I entered the store, I noticed the manager was there. I was too embarrassed to go inside because I had never paid her back, and I wasn’t carrying my wallet. So, I decided that I would just stand outside the store and flag down the first person I saw and ask him or her to buy me a paper. A giant of a man with a friendly face approached. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Suddenly he said, “Hold on” and swiftly whisked me up into his arms and carried me into the store, right over to the counter where the manager was. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 A giant of a man with a friendly face approached. Before he could walk past me, I stopped him and asked if he would buy me a newspaper. He smiled and said that he would do so gladly but wanted to know why I couldn’t do it myself. I told him that I was too embarrassed to tell anyone the reason. He was rather jovial and kept saying, “Aw, come on, tell me. Surely it isn’t that bad.” I liked him. There was something very sweet and gentle about him. I needed a newspaper, so I gave in and told him. Suddenly he said, “Hold on” and swiftly whisked me up into his arms and carried me into the store, right over to the counter where the manager was. My heart raced with anxiety. The giant reached into his pocket, pulled out a five-dollar bill and said, “I’d like to pay for the nylons this lady owes you for and for a newspaper.” The manager looked up, recognized me immediately and her expression softened. I explained to the manager the situation, apologizing for the delay in repaying her. The giant patted my shoulder, slipping the newspaper into my trembling hands. “Kindness circles back,” he murmured, disappearing into the boarding crowd before I could say thanks. 词汇激活 行为类 ①告诉:tell/inform ②拿出:pull out/take out ③消失:disappear/vanish 情绪类 ①焦虑:anxiety/uneasiness ②温柔的:gentle/soft 【点睛】[高分句型1] Before he could walk past me, I stopped him and asked if he would buy me a newspaper.(运用了before引导时间状语从句和if引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] I told him that I was too embarrassed to tell anyone the reason. B She gave the 90s and 00s kids their first-ever BFF, a bespectacled wizard boy named Harry Potter. C Scientists have studied gossip for decades. D In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers lofted a trio of farm animals over Versailles in a hot-air balloon, in what remains the most iconic demonstration of the power of lighter-than-air craft. With help from aerospace partners including Boeing, Pratt &Whitney and Thales, he hopes to have the first airship built and certified by early 2028. 12. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
