20 What does the speaker advise listeners to do in the end?
A. Spare travelers free time.
B. Turn to travelers for help.
C. Grasp some language skills.
【答案】18. C 19. A 20. A
【解析】
【原文】M: People who travel these days have better knowledge than before. So today I’m going to discuss how we can make our customers happier, which is getting harder and harder. First of all, the information we give travelers must be very different or unique—things they can’t find on the Internet. From my 20 years of experience at this job, I know that people love to hear travelers’ original stories. Another point to consider now is that many travelers can speak a different language. For example, once I was speaking to a local driver in my broken Spanish, and there was another tourist nearby who was fluent in Spanish. I was very grateful when he offered to translate for me. Travelers are better at their language skills than they used to be, and we need to know this. Lastly, even though we are conducting group tours, people now tend to like to have free time too—so they don’t have to spend all their time with other tour members.

Gukesh Dommaraju, from Chennai, India, has been playing chess since he was about 7 years old and turned professional at 10. By 12, he became a chess grandmaster, the highest title a chess player can reach. Over the last few years, he has had numerous successes. In April 2024, he emerged victorious in the Candidates Tournament, qualifying him to challenge the world champion, Ding Liren.
The world chess champion is decided by a series of 14 games between the champion and the challenger. Players earn 1 point for winning a game and a half point for every drawn(tied) game. To win, a player must earn 7.5 points.
Even though Ding was the world champion, many people thought Gukesh might win, as Ding had been struggling, with no wins since January. Despite this, Ding quickly took the lead by winning the first game. However, Gukesh began to play better, winning Game 3 and continuing to perform well. The players tied every game after that until Gukesh won Game 11. Ding then took Game 12. After Game 13 ended in a draw, the match was tied at 7.5 points each, setting up the final game as the decider. In the last game, Gukesh and Ding played for almost five hours.
On the 55th move, Ding made a serious mistake, which left him “totally in shock.” This allowed Gukesh to exchange some pieces and gain an advantage, leading to his victory. Ding congratulated the new champion, and Gukesh was so happy that he cried.
Many people have congratulated Gukesh on his victory. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Gukesh’s victory had “inspired millions of young minds to dream big.”
Despite being the world champion, Gukesh remains focused on improving his game. “Becoming the world champion does not mean I am the best player,” he said. He hopes one day to be as strong a chess player as Magnus Carlsen, who was world champion for 10 years and is still ranked No.1 in the world.

Glass might soon have some competition from an unexpected challenger — bamboo. Scientists in China have turned regular old bamboo into a transparent (透明的) material that’s also resistant to fire and water, and holds back smoke.
Silica glass, made from sand, is still the go-to building material when you need something transparent but strong, like windows. But it’s not particularly sustainable, and can be heavy and breakable.
Transparent wood has actually been muscling in on the glass market for a few years now. It is renewable and as strong as or stronger than glass, while being lighter. There are still a few problems with using wood, though. It’s way more burnable than glass, and already in high demand, with supplies taking too long to meet the needs. So for the new study, researchers at Central South University of Forestry and Technology (CSUFT) in China turned to bamboo instead.
“Bamboo, often referred to as ‘the second forest,’ has a fast growth and regeneration rate, allowing it to reach maturity and be used as a building material within four to seven years of growth,” said Caichao Wan, corresponding author of the study. “With an output four times higher than wood per acre, bamboo is recognized for its exceptional efficiency.”
Bamboo’s internal structure and chemical composition are very similar to wood, so the team used a method to turn it transparent. After the lignin (木质素) is removed, the bamboo is filled with an inorganic liquid sodium silicate, which changes the light bending of the fibers to make it clear. Then, it's treated to make the material resistant to water. The end result is a three-layered structure. The bamboo possesses transparency, allowing 71.6% of light to pass through it.
Not only could this transparent bamboo be used as a building material, but when used as a base for perovskite (钙钛矿) solar cells, it acted like a light management layer. That boosted the cells’ power transformation efficiency by 15.29%. “In future research, we are hopeful that this innovative material will lay the foundation for more sustainable and efficient solar cell technologies, ultimately contributing to a greener and more renewable energy landscape,” said Caichao Wan.
28. What does the phrase “muscling in on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Affecting. B. Entering. C. Damaging. D. Changing.
29. Why did researchers choose bamboo over wood for their study?
A. It is more visually pleasing. B. It is much cheaper than wood.
C. It grows faster and produces more. D. It is easier to process chemically.
30. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The advantages of using bamboo instead of glass.
B. The environmental benefits of transparent bamboo.
C. The challenges of using bamboo as a building material.
D. The process of turning bamboo into a transparent material.
31 What is Caichao Wan’s attitude towards future research on transparent bamboo?
A. Indifferent. B. Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Suspicious.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. C

For the first time, a satellite partly made of wood has been launched into space to test if wood could be a good building material for space. This wooden satellite, named “LignoSat,” is being experimented with by Japanese scientists to see if it can help reduce pollution in space. Traditionally, satellites are made of metal, but wood is easy to get, non-polluting, and surprisingly tougher in space due to the absence of water and oxygen.
The concept originated from Takao Doi, a scientist-astronaut, who wondered about growing trees in space for construction purposes. The question got Mr. Doi and other scientists at Japan’s Kyoto University thinking about the idea of wood in space. They thought it might be possible to build a satellite out of wood.
The idea was simple, but the project wasn’t easy. The team at Kyoto University decided to explore using wood for satellites. They tested birch, cherry, and honoki(a type of tree)on the International Space Station. After eight months, all woods proved durable against space conditions. For the final satellite, the researchers chose honoki wood. This wood is light and strong, and doesn’t crack (裂缝) easily.
To create the satellite’s wooden panels, the team used a traditional woodworking method called sashimono. The method doesn’t use nails or glue. Instead, the pieces are carefully cut to fit together tightly. In December, the satellite was put into orbit around the Earth.
Over the next six months, sensors inside the satellite will help measure how well the wood holds up. One important question is how much the wood will expand and shrink (收缩) as the temperature changes. If the experiment works, wooden satellites could one day help reduce pollution. Satellites normally burn up as they come back into the Earth’s atmosphere. Burning metal satellites leave behind a cloud of pollution. But when wood burns, it only leaves water and carbon dioxide behind.
32. Why do scientists test the wooden satellite “LignoSat” in space?
A. To reduce the cost of satellite production.
B. To figure out how long wood can last in space.
C. To compare the strength of different types of wood.
D. To test wood as a space construction material.
33. What inspired scientists to build a satellite out of wood?
A. The lightweight properties of wood. B. Takao Doi’s idea of planting trees in space.
C. The innovation in tree planting methods. D. The development of the LignoSat project.
34. How does sashimono contribute to its overall design and functionality?
A. By allowing for easy repairs in space.
B. By avoiding the need for nails or glue.
C. By adding cultural value to the scientific mission.
D. By helping the satellite adjust to temperature changes.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. First Wooden Satellite Was Launched into Space.
B. Eco-Friendly Space Exploration in the Future.
C. How Wooden Satellites Could Impact the Climate.
D. Whether Japan’s Innovative Approach Reduces Space Litter.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. B 35. A

In the summer of 2024, I, together with my friend, was in the middle of a DIY home project in my vegetable garden that required 1,500 pounds of gravel (砾石). So I headed to a home improvement store and started filling up my car with 50-pound bags of gravel. As I was loading, an old man approached me.
“Do you know that your car has a weight limit?” he asked.
I didn’t know that. It had never even crossed my mind that carrying such a heavy load could damage my car. It felt like something my dad would have warned me about. My dad passed away from a heart attack in 2017, at the age of 57.
Feeling overwhelmed, I wondered how I would unload the gravel from my car and transport it all back home for my project. Then the man made an offer of unusual generosity.
“I can load the gravel into my truck. Do you live nearby?” he asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
He helped me unload all the gravel from my car and then loaded it into his truck. We exchanged numbers, and I shared my address. As I pulled onto the highway, the kindness of what he had done began to hit me. I just started to cry in my car because I was so grateful for the goodness of strangers, of this person helping me.
On the darkest day of my life seven years ago, my friend gave me a moment of relief. Now, the whole interaction with the old man reminded me of my dad and how he would have done something similar.
When we arrived at my house, the old man helped me unload all 1,500 pounds of gravel onto my driveway. I thanked him repeatedly, but he insisted that I not worry about it. I didn’t want him to leave empty-handed, so I tried offering him money, and then wine, but he wouldn’t accept them. Then I thought of something he might like.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I had a vegetable garden and it was the end of the season.

The old man threw the bag of eggplants onto his shoulder.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
I had a vegetable garden and it was the end of the season. I just asked him, “Do you like eggplants?” His serious face lit up when he heard my words and said, “I love eggplants very much.” So I offered him a tour of the vegetable garden; it turned out he too had been a gardener before his work got in the way. I twisted a handful of big eggplants off the vine, put them into a bag and gave them to him. He seemed thrilled and grateful for the simple gift.
The old man threw the bag of eggplants onto his shoulder. He marched off back to his truck with a satisfied smile on his face. As I watched him drive away, leaving behind my 1,500 pounds of gravel, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this unexpected encounter. It reminds me that even in our darkest moments, there are still acts of kindness that can bring light and warmth into our lives. Today, inspired by the old man, I try to be on the lookout for others who might need a hand.

24. What earned Gukesh the chance to challenge Ding?
A. The highest title he has reached. B. His passion for playing chess.
C. Winning Candidates Tournament. D. The age at which he competed.
25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. The game was fiercely contested. B. Gukesh had an advantage over Ding.

31. What is Caichao Wan’s attitude towards future research on transparent bamboo?
A. Indifferent. B. Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Suspicious.

33 What inspired scientists to build a satellite out of wood?

I have six different apple trees in my small forest garden. This means there are a lot of apples to harvest each year. ___36___ Over time I developed strategies to handle it smoothly. Here’s my advice for you.
Understand what apples you are growing. Apples ripen (成熟) at different times. ___37___ This will vary a little with conditions from year to year. However, having a rough idea of when you will be harvesting allows you to prepare.
___38___ Some pieces of equipment are crucial for the apple harvest. A kitchen juicer isn’t enough; invest in a metal hand-turned macerator (浸渍机) and a wood-and-metal fruit press. These make processing easier. Also, have a suitable storage area ready, along with canning jars (罐子) and other necessities.
Consider investing in a fruit picker. It is a picker with an extendable pole that can reach apples even from the very top of the trees. ___39___
One final tip that I would like to share is very simple: Many hands make light work. If you have a lot of apples to harvest, consider inviting some family or friends and have an apple picking party — then share your harvest, of course. ___40___ It also supports the goals of sustainable living.
These tips may sound basic, but they ensure a smoother apple harvest and prevent waste of your beautiful, delicious apples. With the right preparations, apple harvesting becomes a manageable and enjoyable task each year.
A. Now with it, apple harvesting isn’t boring.
B. Prepare storage areas and required equipment.
C. So the apple picking will become quicker and easier.
D. It took me a while to recognize different apple varieties.
E. Initially, the apple harvest was exciting but challenging.
F. This cooperative approach makes the task more efficient.
G. Therefore, it is helpful to know when your harvest should take place.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I had a vegetable garden and it was the end of the season.

So today, i'm going to discuss how we can make our customers happier, which is getting harder and harder. First of all, the information we give travellers must be very different or unique things they can find on the internet. From my twenty years of experience at this job, I know that people love travellers original stories. Another point to consider now is that many travellers can speak a different language. For example, once I was speaking to a local driver in my broken spanish and there was another tours nearby who was fluent in spanish, I was very grateful when he offered to translate.
