It is late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After dropping off their three children, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The teenagers, completely lost, have to find their way back home by themselves.
It may sound crazy to you, but this is a tradition with a long history in the Netherlands (荷兰) called “dropping”. People there believe that parents should develop children’s independence through activities like “dropping”.
However, for many other parents around the world, they worry too much about their children’s safety. Why should they put their children at risk when there are many other ways to develop their independence.
People have many different opinions about parenting. All parents want their children to be happy, healthy and successful. In China, for example, many parents spend anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 yuan on summer vacation activities for the children. They want their children to enjoy their vacation as much as possible.
But some parents try hard and became a “helicopter parents” which is basically the opposite of dropping. They worry too much about their children and care about everything their children do like helicopters flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be protected all the time.
But this might not be a good parenting style, either, according to a parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. Good parents need to find a balance between protecting their children and letting them go. As Kenneth Ginsburg writes “parents should make sure the children do not crash against the rocks, yet allow them to ride the waves (波浪) even if they get a little choppy (波涛汹涌的) sometimes.”

A. get the children to learn to ride the waves without getting hurt
B. let children walk into nature and learn something useful from it.
C. care about children safety while developing their independence

Last month, I took my son Tom to see his grandparents in the countryside. His grandpa took him to the yard to play. Tom was curious about everything.
At lunch, Tom told me, “Dad, I saw a hen flying.”

“Dad, the dog ran after the hen in the yard. The hen was tapped (被困) in a corner. When the hen saw no other way out, she suddenly flapped her wings and flew up to the roof (房顶). The hen escaped. Dad, I didn’t know hens could fly. How can she fly?” my child asked.
I thought for a while and said, “Maybe because of love. The hen loves her own life and that helps her fly!”
Tom nodded (点头). He seemed to have understood.
Last weekend, we visited Tom’s grandparents again. This time I heard Tom shouting from the yard, “Dad! The dog is chasing the hen again! Come and see!”

“Dad, why didn’t the hen fly away? She knows she can’t fight the dog.” Tom asked.

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”
This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved our lives?
Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?
Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy, beer-drinking granny”, to one who cooked things.

In their eyes children need to be protected all the time.

Woosung Street in Hong Kong is famous for its restaurants. Now it is also known for something else—a blue fridge on the street. There is a note on the fridge. It reads, “Give what you can give, and take what you need to take.” The fridge is full of food. There are also socks and towels (毛巾) for anyone who needs them.
Ahmen Khan set up the neighborhood fridge. Khan runs a sports center on Woosung Street. He once watched a film about people setting up a neighborhood fridge, and he decided to do the same thing. He found an old fridge and painted it blue. Then he set it on the street. “When you go home, get food from your fridge and take it here. That gives you a sense of satisfaction.” Khan said, “The street is our community. It’s our home. I want people here to feel warm and happy.”
Someone wrote a story about Khan and his fridge on the Internet. Many people read and shared the article online.
