Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Animals might not celebrate Christmas, but that doesn’t mean they don’t give gifts. We are not the only species ____1____ (use) presents to delight and impress each other. Birds, insects, primates and other animals are all known to find and give favors for love, fun and friendship. There seem to be two types of animal gift giving: nuptial and non-nuptial. Nuptial gifts are tokens ____2____ (give) when seeking love. On the other hand, an animal ____3____ give a gift for fun, to make new friends, or to say thanks, and these are called non-nuptial gifts.
Crows that ____4____ (feed) on a regular basis and learn to trust the people feeding them sometimes bring those people shiny trinkets (小装饰品). A queen bee sits in the parlor producing young while accepting a steady supply of food brought to ____5____ by the workers. Sometimes gift giving can go a bit too far. Certain male spiders give the ultimate gift when they become the main meal for the female they have just mated with. An animal giving a gift is doing so for a self-serving reason — to raise its young, to attract a mate, to survive by a division of labor or by bonding within a group.
Food is important in the animal world. Most animals don`t share food ____6____ parents feeding their young. Bonobos (矮黑猩猩) resist this trend gifting food to unrelated bonobos. Sometimes they give food just ____7____ they notice someone else doesn’t have any. They also give food just to hang out. with friends. Dolphins are well known gift givers. They give to say “thank you” and “let’s be friends”. They might even give gifts out of pity. At some aquariums (水族馆), dolphin keepers notice gifts of dead eels, tuna, squid and other seafood. One running theory is ____8____ the dolphins are so worried about the keepers’ poor fishing and survival skills that they leave gifts of delicious mouthfuls.
As humans, we have many animal traits that ____9____ (shape) by our culture over the ages. Sometimes the true origin and ancestral purpose of a behavior become lost in the evolutionary past, leading us to think of ourselves as ____10____ (rise) above the rest of the animals. Maybe we have in some instances, and perhaps gift giving is one of them.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A. fundamentally B. incorporate C. called D. remains
E. weird F. lively G. integrating H. frequent
I determined J. projecting K. capture
New era requires a new vocabulary. Will we still talk about the “mobile” phone when all phones are mobile, or when they are implanted within us? Does “evolution” really ____11____ our deepening involvement with technology today, or should we instead speak of human-technology coevolution?
Technology is everywhere nowadays, especially at work. Some people are really good at using all the cool new tools that keep popping up. They have something ____12____ a TQ, or technology quotient. Think of it like a superpower for understanding the latest tech stuff that our great-grandparents would have found really ____13____. Having a high TQ means you’re awesome at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows about yet.
The examples are common and becoming more and more ____14____. For the parent it might be a homeschool video class. For the brand manager it might be search engine optimization (最优化). And for the clinician, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the analysis of a CT scan. TQ attempts to quantify our competence to make sensible use of current technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace and capitalize on future innovations. This adoption is critical from a variety of perspectives, from social to business. One trip into the world of ChatGPT and we can see how the dynamics of AI and search are ____15____ changing for just about everyone.
Any Mom or Dad can understand the value of IQ and EQ in ____16____ the potential for a child’s success. But what about technology? The ability for the toddler and the teacher to understand embrace and digest technology will be a decisive aspect of their lives as we speed into the future. We are increasingly ____17____ by technology and our active participation in everything from smartphones to Facebook. It might just be time for the basic human needs of food, water and shelter to ____18____ technology too. And when that happens, it just might be a good idea to measure it.
While this dynamic is not without complexity and concerns, it ____19____ virtually inevitable. As TQ grows, this engagement can interact with our traditional IQ and BQ capabilities, allowing for a more dynamic and fulfilling human experience. ______20______ TQ with IQ and EQ will play a practical and functional role in society, business, and education, quantifying the ability of adopting and integrating technology.

Middle-aged people may count on goji berry (枸杞) tea to ____23____ their youth, while their offsprings (后代) are purchasing bottled drinks containing goji berries to ____24____ lack of sleep.
New-style tea brands have ____25____ the market with night owl beverages and a variety of yangsheng drinks. Many people use them to ____27____ busy lifestyles characterized by extended workdays, late evenings spent in front of screens, and regular consumption of spicy and fatty foods. These are just part of a global wellness boom, but the traditional concept of yangsheng has given the trend a unique cultural twist in China.
The concept of yangsheng is, in fact, thousands of years old. This buzzword is ____28____ in Chinese philosophy. Originating from Taoism and traditional Chinese medicine beliefs, the vast ____29____ of yangsheng includes habits like eating a healthy diet, exercising, meditating and so on.
However, experts _____30_____ about the actual health benefits of these food and drinks. Can a sip of a night owl beverage really _____31_____ the side effects of staying up late? Can a bite of bread truly improve the health condition of a person? A professional says, “Without clinical data, it’s hard to determine whether a product making function claims can actually lead to improvements.” Moreover, ingredients need to be carefully _____32_____ to an individual, something which mass-marketed products can never achieve. Su Quanxin from the China Association of Chinese Medicine says, “Yangsheng is not about chasing trends. It’s a scientific way of life and a positive attitude towards life.”
Most people believe the trend is _____33_____ tied to widespread anxiety about the negative health effects of high-pressure modern life. According to research, more than half of young people born after 1990 had issues with hair loss and reduced vision, 40 percent _____34_____ overweight and a decline in physical performance, with 30 percent reporting problems with their immune system. Everybody feels they’re not healthy enough. People who are _____35_____ punk yangsheng just want to find “quick fix” solutions to the impact of late nights and hard work.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.
(A)
I’m weirdly into clouds. I’m not a meteorologist (气象学家)or a climate scientist. I don’t even know that much about clouds. I just really like them. Whenever I’m outside or near a window, my eye is drawn up to the clouds overhead to watch their ever-changing shapes.
Like a lot of people, I’ve been into clouds since I was a child. I loved to imagine them as animals in the sky. I loved getting lost in daydreams, staring at them out the windows during a boring lecture at school or on a long road trip. And early in life I became a fan of the ultimate front row seat for cloud watching — the window seat on an airplane. From a plane, clouds look like something you can jump into and have a lovely soft landing.
A few years ago, I started a photography project about the varying moods of a bay on Lake Michigan. After a few months of shooting, I started to realize that the images I was capturing were really pictures of the clouds, not the lake itself. It was the ever-changing colorful landscape of clouds in the sky that created visual interest and emotional tone.
It was a moment when I realized how much clouds color our experience of the world. A sky of bright white fluffy clouds makes a lot of us feel cheery and energetic, while a sky covered with dark gray clouds can make things feel subdued and sometimes even gloomy. And the rain or snow they bring can change the course of our day by making travel a mess, ruining plans for a hike or a picnic with friends.
Clouds can also transport me away from the duller parts of life, away from boring situations and away from day-to-day stresses and worries. They get me out of my head and into a dreamscape, a magical looking landscape that floats above me where I can imagine the constraints of everyday life don’t apply. A place that looks like something from a fantasy but is real.
It is a reminder that magical things in life can come out of nothing and out of nowhere. Much like water vapor can create illusions when it shows up in cloud form, we humans can morph and change and present as something that really isn’t there. We can take different forms depending on where we are in the world and who we are with. Much like clouds, we are all shifting and changing, solid one moment only to dissolve the next. And who knows what form our lives will take next?
36. What initially stimulated the author’s interest in clouds?
A. Childhood imagination. B. A photography project.
C. Many scientific articles. D. Meteorological studies.
37. What can we know from the project on Lake Michigan?
A. The subject of photos was the lake itself.
B. The author’s photographs primarily captured the clouds.
C. The project was not related to changing clouds at all.
D. The project focused on capturing the colors of the lake.
38. Based on the context, what does the word “subdued” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Exciting and full of energy. B. Quiet and less active.
C. Light-hearted and carefree. D. Loud and attention-grabbing.
39. What philosophical idea does the author draw from clouds?
A. Humans are still and unchanging like clouds. B. Humans are entirely unaffected by their nature.
C. Humans should be like clouds in their stability. D. Humans are constantly altering.
(B)
Small adjustments to your daily routine can go a long way toward protecting your body’s control center and preventing cognitive decline down the road.
In fact, scientists believe that as many as 45 percent of dementia (痴呆) cases could be delayed or prevented with help from some simple, sometimes surprising, changes in behavior.
1. Wear a helmet.
Physically protecting your head is the single most important step you can take to safeguard your brain, experts said.
Recurrent head trauma from traumatic brain injuries and concussions (脑震荡) can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (慢性创伤性脑病), which can worsen cognition overall, and in some cases cause dementia. Wearing a helmet during activities like biking and skiing can significantly reduce the risk of injury, Dr. Feldman said.
Motorcyclists should also always wear helmets, even if state laws don’t require them.
2. Join a book club.
Maintaining an active social life keeps the negative health effects of isolation — such as depression — at bay, said Dr. Jessica Choi, a neurologist at Cedars-Sinai.
Dr. Choi said that her patients who have a strong social support system are typically in better overall health than the ones who don’t. “Not having that can lead to depressive episodes,” which are tied to cognitive decline in older patients, she said.
Book clubs or gardening groups can do the trick, but “even a scheduled monthly dinner with a close friend or family members makes a big difference for patients,” Dr. Choi said.
3. Wear a mask on smoggy or smoky days.
There’s growing research linking air pollution exposure to cognitive decline. Scientists think very fine, inhalable (可吸入的) particles in the air could trigger chemical changes once they reach the brain, said Deborah Cory Slechta, a neuroscientist in the department of environmental medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center.
Not all harmful particles can be avoided — some are so small that they slip through air filters — but wearing an N95 or surgical mask and using indoor air filters on days when air quality is worse (including because of wildfire smoke) can minimize your exposure.
4. Sleep well.
Finding ways to improve your time spent sleeping, and the quality of that sleep, can go a long way toward helping you stay sharp and prevent dementia.
If you work night shifts and sleep during the day, consider blackout (遮光) curtain to help regulate your body’s biological clock. If anxiety and depression are keeping you up, try meditating before bed. If you aren’t sure where your sleep problems lie, keep a sleep diary to help identify potential issues.
“A rested mind is crucial for brain health, as sleep helps consolidate memories and clear out cellular debris from the brain,” Dr. Feldman said.
40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Wearing a helmet only benefits motorcyclists.
B. Joining a gardening group won’t help reduce cognitive decline.
C. On smoggy days, wearing an ordinary mask can minimize exposure to harmful particles.
D. Using blackout curtains can be helpful for night-shift workers to regulate their body clock.
41. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce the causes of dementia.
B. To tell people how to maintain an active social life.
C To provide some simple ways to prevent cognitive decline.
D. To emphasize the importance of protecting the head.
42. This passage is most likely taken from__________.
A. a medical magazine B. a sports newspaper
C. a sci-fi novel D. a travel guide
(C)
On a brisk September morning, Brian Palik’s footfalls land quietly on a path in Minnesota’s iconic Northwoods. A mature red pine (松树) is a tall, straight overstory tree that thrives in cold winters and cool summers. It’s the official Minnesota state tree and a valued target of its timber industry.
But red pine’s days of dominance here could fade. In coming decades, climate change will make red pine and other Northwoods trees increasingly vulnerable to destructive combinations of longer, warmer summers and less extremely cold winters, as well as droughts, windstorms, wildfires and insect infestations. Climate change is altering ecological conditions in cold regions faster than trees can adapt or migrate.
Palik, a forest ecologist, stops and points to a newcomer under the red-pine canopy: a broadleaf deciduous tree. “It’s doing really well,” he says. This tree probably shouldn’t be thriving here. Normally, if a southern adapted seedling (幼苗) is planted in an unsuitably cold climate like this one, it can risk frost damage, and its survival is threatened. But the newcomer’s lush, green foliage indicates good health. It is a promising sign in a project that aims to keep forests growing in a warming world.
Palik’s project is an experiment in forest assisted migration, the relocation of trees to help woodlands adapt and flourish despite the heating of their habitats from climate change. Foresters advocating assisted migration are typically not aiming to save specific species — instead, by moving trees, they want to help sustain productive forest for multiple benefits such as carbon storage, water filtration, wildlife habitat, recreational beauty and timber.
Now, assisted migration research for conservation is getting bolder with growing concerns about future forest disruption from climate change. And the movement is growing internationally, with research happening in Spain, Canada, Mexico, etc. Moreover, recent proposals have called for relocating endangered species to new habitats where they would have a better chance of thriving: Mexican gray wolves to northern parts of Arizona, New Mexico or Texas, for example, or Karner blue butterflies farther north from southern Michigan.
However, artificially moving a forest, some biologists say, has risks. Relocated species might become invasive or disrupt the ecological balance of the forest. But, says Palik, “the risk of not trying to move species for climate change is larger”. “Forests die fast and grow slowly,” says Lee Frelich, a forest ecologist at the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology. As climate change continues, he says, some forests could vanish, replaced by encroaching (渐渐渗入的) grasslands that do not provide the types of wildlife habitat and other benefits that healthy forests do. “Your only option in that case,” he says, “is to bring in new species or live with whatever nature does,” which — in cases of extreme climate change “is likely to be brushy vegetation and not be a forest for quite some time.”
43. How does climate change affect the Northwoods region of Minnesota?
A. By decreasing the length of the growing season.
B. By reducing the occurrence of droughts and wildfires.
C. By increasing the frequency of extremely cold winters.
D. By changing the living condition of the tree species there.
44. What is a key consideration for Brian Palik when deciding which trees to plant?
A. Focusing exclusively on planting trees that aren’t native to the area.
B. Planting the tallest and fastest-growing trees to quickly restore the forest.
C. Choosing trees that are the most economically valuable for timber production.
D. Selecting species that can thrive in the changing climate conditions expected in the future.
45. What is the primary goal of assisted migration?
A. To ensure that forests remain productive and provide ecosystem services.
B. To preserve specific endangered species in their original habitats.
C. To maintain the aesthetic beauty of forests for tourism.
D. To increase the profitability of the timber industry.
46. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. The practice of forest assisted migration is bound to be carried out on a larger scale globally.
B. Scientists’ concerns over forest disruption stem from the economic losses in the timber industry.
C. Forest assisted migration appears to be a necessary attempt to maintain forest ecosystems.
D. Relocated species will always outcompete native species, leading to biodiversity loss.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
The comparison thief loves to sneak into our minds without warning and steal our joy or peace. And with social media flooding our lives, it’s easier than ever to find someone “better” to compare ourselves to. ____47____ In it, we always lose. We either walk away feeling inadequate or get a false sense of fulfillment, believing we are better than others. I constantly struggled with this battle. So, what did I do?
Reset my mind. ____48____ At the start of each day, I told myself to love and appreciate myself and give myself confidence instead of looking to others to do that. Getting your mindset right at the beginning of the day sets you up for a successful day of less comparison.
Accept the real self. One of the biggest things that helped me stop comparing myself was finding out who I was and accepting her. When witnessing my friend’s gorgeous and well-organized house, I naturally tended to compare mine with hers. ____49____ We are all imperfect beings deserving of love, respect, and appreciation. Celebrating the other person and accepting myself was the opportunity to start again with the truth.
____50____ I stopped following social media accounts that made me feel inadequate or insecure and set a boundary about my time on those apps. They can become a wormhole and suck up the precious time we have. Set a timer if you must. Better yet, put your phone down and engage with the people whose opinion truly matters.
Be present. I began to train my mind to trust that I did not need to plan, control, and schedule everything. All I needed to do was living in the moment. I. wouldn’t worry about recording a moment for others to see. Instead, I would choose to focus on seeing and appreciating it for myself.
A. I learned the art of seeking inward.
B. Feelings of failure instantly arose but I’ ve accepted my humanity.
C. Set a timer to start a new day punctually.
D. Restrict social media time.
E. Constantly measuring ourselves against others can be an exhausting mind game.
F. What I needed to prepare was a present for her.
IV. Summary
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to help family, friends, and even strangers in times of need. It’s also easy to look the other way.
In a new study, Boyer, a professor at Washington University, tested subjects with a variety of imaginary news stories describing cases of misfortune, such as someone in a car accident while texting and driving and someone attacked by a bear while hiking. Participants thought the stories were real, but each scene was carefully designed to test a person’s empathy and willingness to help. After reading each story, test subjects were asked to rate the character of the victim and their responsibility for the mishap(不幸). In some experiments, participants were offered a chance to donate their total payment for participating in the study, up to 60 cents, to help the victim. In others, they were asked if they would be willing to help the person with their own money.
Results suggested a general lack of generosity. For example, participants in one experiment offered to donate an average of about 15 cents to the victim, less than a third of the maximum amount possible. A closer look at the data across multiple experiments revealed a trend: the more character faults participants saw in a victim, the less willing they were to donate. “They’re saying that the victim doesn’t deserve help,” Boyer says.
The finding goes against a long-held assumption about human nature. In the 1960s, psychologists suggested people were reluctant to help victims of misfortune based on a fundamental belief that the world was fair and bad things only happened to bad people.
But Boyer says the idea of a just world is both uncommon and unfounded. “In most places, people think the world is deeply unfair,” Boyer said.
Instead of making a blanket assumption that all victims somehow deserve their misfortune, people go out of their way to find fault in each victim on a case-by-case basis, Boyer says. “If I tell you a person was burned in a kitchen fire, you’ll be sympathetic at first, but it’s very likely you or someone else will at some point suggest he must have been doing something stupid. It’s a classic example of blaming the victim,” he says

Section B
【答案】36. A 37. B 38. B 39. D

【36题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Like a lot of people, I’ve been into clouds since I was a child. I loved to imagine them as animals in the sky. I loved getting lost in daydreams, staring at them out the windows during a boring lecture at school or on a long road trip.(和很多人一样,我从小就喜欢云。我喜欢把它们想象成天上的动物。我喜欢在无聊的学校讲座或长途旅行中,盯着窗外做白日梦)”可知,是童年的想象激发了作者对云的兴趣。故选A项。

【38题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“A sky of bright white fluffy clouds makes a lot of us feel cheery and energetic, while a sky covered with dark gray clouds can make things feel subdued and sometimes even gloomy.(一片明亮的白色蓬松云朵的天空让我们很多人感到愉快和精力充沛,而一片覆盖着深灰色云朵的天空会让人感到subdued,有时甚至会感到忧郁。)”可知,while表示对比,subdued与cheery和energetic形成对比,且与gloomy(忧郁的)语义相近,因此最可能的意思是“安静而不活跃的”。故选B项。
【39题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Much like water vapor can create illusions when it shows up in cloud form, we humans can morph and change and present as something that really isn’t there. We can take different forms depending on where we are in the world and who we are with. Much like clouds, we are all shifting and changing, solid one moment only to dissolve the next. And who knows what form our lives will take next?(就像水蒸气以云的形式出现时会产生幻觉一样,我们人类也可以变形、改变,并以一种并不存在的东西的形式出现。我们可以根据我们在世界上的位置以及与谁在一起而采取不同的形式。就像云一样,我们都在不断变化,这一刻是坚实的,下一刻就会消散。谁知道我们接下来会以什么形式出现呢?)”可知,作者认为就像云一样,我们人类也在不断变化,这一刻是坚实的,下一刻就会消散。由此可知,作者从云中得出的哲学思想是人类像云一样在不断变化。故选D项。

C. To provide some simple ways to prevent cognitive decline.
D. To emphasize the importance of protecting the head.
42 This passage is most likely taken from__________.

The comparison thief loves to sneak into our minds without warning and steal our joy or peace. And with social media flooding our lives it’s easier than ever to find someone “better” to compare ourselves to.

IV. Summary

【答案】A study by Boyer examined people’s willingness to help victims of misfortune. Results showed low generosity, with participants donating less when they blamed victims’ character flaws. This contradicts the “just world” theory, revealing people tend to find fault case-by-case to justify withholding aid, rather than believing all victims deserve misfortune universally.

【答案】
Dear School Administration,
I’m Li Ming, a student at our school. I’m writing to share my thoughts on enhancing our evacuation drills. Currently, there are two significant issues. Firstly, the drills follow a fixed routine every year. Students just line up and walk out quickly, regarding it as a tiresome task rather than a life-saving practice. Secondly, we rarely receive any feedback after the drills. Without understanding our mistakes, we can’t improve our emergency response skills.
To address these problems, I have two suggestions. First, we could vary the drill scenarios, such as simulating a gas leak or a night-time evacuation, which would make the drills more challenging and engaging. Second, teachers should hold a brief meeting after each drill to analyze our performance, showing us what we did wrong and how to do better. This way, students will take the drills more seriously and truly learn how to protect ourselves in disasters.
Sincerely,
Li Ming
