Late one night in July 2020, Halli was walking around Reykjavik’s main shopping street with his family. They had just moved back to Iceland from the United States and were struggling with jet lag (时差). When his three-year-old son wanted a drink from a corner store, Halli faced a problem: a 20-centimetre step blocked his wheelchair from entering the store.
This was not new to Halli, who has used a wheelchair since age 25 due to a muscle disease. As he waited outside, he thought about how often he had been excluded from places like restaurants and stores because they were not accessible.
Halli, a successful digital designer, had lived in many cities worldwide and noticed how differently they approached accessibility. After selling his company, Ueno, to Twitter (now X), he decided to use his resources to make Iceland more wheelchair-friendly.
In 2021, he launched Ramp (斜坡) Up Reykjavik, a non-profit project aiming to build 100 permanent ramps in the city’s downtown within a year. Unlike temporary ramps in other cities, these were designed to fit perfectly with the buildings, making them look like they had always been there.
With government funding and sponsors, the project went beyond its goal and expanded nationwide. By 2026, the team plans to build 1,500 ramps across Iceland, costing about 400 million Icelandic krona.
Iceland’s president praised the project, saying, “We want our society to be inclusive. Halli has shown us how easy it is to make a difference when we work together.”
In just three years, Halli has become a local hero, known as a “kind tech giant”. He hopes his work inspires others. Recently, a woman built a ramp at her home so her wheelchair-using friend could visit easily. “Equal access is not a reality yet,” he says, “but change starts with one person.”
4. What inspired Halli to start the ‘Ramp Up Reykjavik’ project?
A. The lack of wheelchair access. B. His son’s difficulty in finding a drink.
C. A suggestion from Iceland’s president. D. His desire to become famous in Iceland.
5. How are the ramps built by ‘Ramp Up Reykjavik’ different from those in other cities?
A. They are cheap to construct. B. They are only built in downtown.
C. They are temporary and movable. D. They look fitted with the buildings forever.
6. Which of the following best describes Halli?
A. Generous and patient. B. Positive and energetic.
C. Smart and hardworking. D. Inspiring and pioneering.
7. What dose Halli expect people to do about equal access?
A. Go ahead to start from small. B. Build ramps in every city.
C. Appeal to government for funds. D. Raise awareness through media.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. D 7. A

Animal products could produce electricity, one British power company warns — and to give consumers a choice, it’s offering what it calls the world’s first vegan electricity.
Ecotricity, a renewable energy provider in the U.K. , announced its electricity and gas would be certified vegan after it claimed half of British homes are powered by electricity made from animal byproducts. Company founder Dale Vince accused companies that consider themselves “ ethical” or “green” of keeping consumers in the dark about their “secret ingredient.” “We need clear labeling of energy sourcing so that people can make informed choices,” he said in a statement.
The company offers “vegan energy” in wind and solar power, and it’s developing “sea power” produced by wave oscillation and marine currents. None of Ecotricity’s electrical sources contains animal byproducts that the company knew of before it made the announcement, but it registered with the Vegan Society to certify its green status.
Though not widely open, it’s fairly common for power companies to get electricity from animals through anaerobic digestion (厌氧消化). Animal waste is generally considered a clean, renewable energy source. Turning manure (肥料) into fuel eliminates a sizeable chunk of carbon pollution and lessens power companies’ reliance on “dirtier” fossil fuels like coal and oil. Plus, animals provide a limitless supply of waste, while Earth’s natural gas stores are finite, so crackers wouldn’t need to drill into rock to extract it.
Cows are pictured at a Wagyu cattle breeding center in June in Petit-Mars, France. A U.K. energy company announced the first “vegan electricity” after warning consumers about animal byproducts in energy production,
After anaerobic digestion, farmers can use the liquid remains of the manure as fertilizer and make chips for animal bedding from the solid leftovers, chemical engineer DavidSimakov told Popular Science.
“We are talking about producing the amount of renewable natural gas enough to heat thousands of homes from just a single large landfill site,” he said. “We need to stop pumping carbon from underground into the atmosphere and start caring about introducing more and more renewable energy to make our lives more sustainable.”
Renewable energy only accounts for 11 percent of energy consumption in the U. S. , according to the Energy Information Administration. Fossil fuels and nuclear energy generate more than 80 percent of the country’s electricity, and that’s unlikely to change: like other clean energy sources, anacrobic digestion is still more expensive than traditional sources of energy.
8. According to Dale Vince, ____________.
A. vegan electricity and gas shouldn’t use animal byproducts
B. it’s not certain whether Ecotricity has used animal byproducts
C. it’s necessary for consumers to know how electricity is produced
D. people don’t need to make choices of whether to use vegan electricity
9. In Paragraph 2, “secret ingredient” refers to ____________.
A. animal waste B. vegan energy C. an energy provider D. energy labeling
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. It’s forbidden to get exploited natural gas since it is limited.
B. Clean energy may not replace fossil fuels to be used by families.
C. Power companies can rely on animal waste to produce clean energy.
D. The waste of cows is first used to produce clean energy in the world.
11. What does the author think of clean energy?
A. It has been a mainstream. B. It has a promising future.
C. Consumers tend to use more clean energy now. D. Its producing cost has decreased its popularity.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

The hero’s journey — this timeless narrative (叙述) structure, first described by the American writer Joseph Campbell in 1949, is found in historical stories, such as the Odyssey, and modern favorites, including the Harry Potter. Many hero’s journey stories have become cultural touchstones that influence how people think about their world and themselves.
To explore the connection between people’s life stories and the hero’s journey, we had our first study. We collected life stories from 1, 200 people in Chicago. We used sets of questions to measure the storytelling participants’ sense of meaning in life, amount of life satisfaction and level of depression. We then examined these stories for the seven elements of the hero’s journey; a lead role, a shift of circumstances, a long search, a challenge, an association, a personal transformation and a resulting legacy (遗产).
In our first study, we found that people who had more hero’s journey elements in their life stories reported more meaning in life, more happiness and less depression. We also found that hero’s journey narratives provided more benefits, often including a “redemptive” narrative, where a person’s life story goes from defeat to victory.
We then wondered whether adjusting one’s life story to be more “heroic” would increase feelings of meaning in life. We developed a “restorying” intervention in which we urged people to retell their stories as a hero’s journey. Participants first identified each of the seven elements in their life, and then we encouraged them to put these pieces together and form a logical narrative.
In another study with more than 1,700 participants, we confirmed that this restorying intervention worked; it helped people see their life as a hero’s journey, which in turn made that life feel more meaningful. Intervention recipients (接受者) also reported greater life satisfaction and became more adaptable in the face of personal challenges. Besides, these intervention recipients saw difficulties more positively and dealt with them more creatively in their later life.
So, though you may never save the world on a massive scale, you could save yourself and become a hero in the context of your own life.
12. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. What the study showed. B. Why the study was conducted.
C. How the study was carried out. D. Whether the study was a success.
13. What can be inferred from the first study?
A. Hero’s journey elements promote well-being.
B. Hero’s journey narratives offer no advantages.
C. A hero’s life story must go from defeat to success.
D. A personal transformation may make life meaningless.
14. How did the participants benefit from the restorying intervention?
A. They created a better public image.
B. They became more responsible individuals.
C. They developed a deeper sense of purpose in life.
D. They shaped a more optimistic approach to hardship.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. An Exciting Life Story Leads to a Hero’s Journey
B. A Meaningful Life Comes From a Hero’s Journey
C. To Lead a Meaningful Life, Become Your Own Hero
D. To Become Your Own Hero, Read more Hero Stories
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

The teenage years are marked by intense changes — physical, social, emotional, and developmental — that can be difficult to deal with at times.____16____ As you grow older, conflicts with family often increase, mainly due to the desire for more independence. Peer (同龄人) pressure also plays a major role, as teenagers are more likely to be influenced by friends while testing boundaries and seeking autonomy.
Conflicts during this time can also arise from the intensity of your emotions and your evolving ability to think abstractly. As you work on forming your individual identity, you may become more focused on the world around you, trying to make sense of your own feelings and form opinions on various issues. ____17____ As your outlook changes, these struggles may make it more difficult to navigate relationships with family and cope with peer pressure.
While conflicts are a natural part of this stage of life, there are ways to manage and resolve them productively. ____18____By expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly, you can prevent misunderstandings and build mutual respect. Equally important is active listening — understanding others’ outlook can help you find common ground and reach a resolution.
____19____Staying calm allows you to think more clearly and avoid worsening emotions. Techniques such as deep breathing or temporarily stepping away from the situation can help manage intense feelings. Additionally, turning to trusted adults or peers who have faced similar challenges can help you gain practical strategies for managing emotions.
While conflicts are a normal part of growing up, they can also be opportunities for personal development and self-discovery.____20____
A. Emotional regulation is also essential.
B. The most effective strategy is communication.
C. These conflicts are caused by misunderstandings.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.

Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!(96词)
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.(100词)

Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力)computer programmer.” I shook my head.
