Where is the passage probably taken from? A. An art journal. B. A travel brochure. C. A geography textbook. D. A villa advertisement. B Two years ago a couple of high-school classmates worked a mathematical wonder. It was a trigonometric (三角函数) proof of the Pythagorean theorem (毕达哥拉斯定理). Now, both 19, they’ve just reported finding 10 more proofs of it. For over 2,000 years, such proofs were considered impossible. That, however, didn’t discourage Ne’Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson. The two teens published their new ones on October 28, 2023 in American Mathematical Monthly. “People have the impression that you have to be struggling for years and years before you can actually produce some new mathematics,” says Lozano-Robledo, a mathematician from the University of Connecticut. But Jackson and Johnson show that “you can make a surprise even as a high-school student.” Mathematician Jason Zimba announced the first trigonometric-based proof of the Pythagorean theorem in 2009. The second came six years later, from mathematician Nuno Luzia. These were the only two until 2022, when Jackson and Johnson presented their first proofs. The teens first formally presented their work at an American Mathematical Society meeting in March 2023. Afterward, they set out to publish their findings in a peer-reviewed math journal. “This proved to be the most awesome task of all” Jackson and Johnson noted in their paper. They had to write up their work and learn new skills. But working on their early proof and studying Zimba’s “inspired the creative process,” Jackson says. “From there we developed additional proofs.” And, Johnson adds, “It was important to have our proofs published to show that our work is correct and respectable.” Publishing the proofs was a big achievement. But that doesn’t mean the story is over. Now, “other people might take the paper and generalize those proofs, or generalize their ideas, or use their ideas in other ways,” Lozano-Robledo says. “It just opens up a lot of mathematical conversations.” Jackson hopes that the proofs will inspire other students to “see that barriers are part of the process. Stick with it, and you might find yourself achieving more than you thought possible.” 4. Why did the author quote the words of Lozano-Robledo in paragraph 2? A. To praise the commitment of mathematicians. B. To highlight the teens’ remarkable breakthrough. C. To stress the difficulty of becoming an expert. D. To compare the teens’ proofs with the previous ones. 5. What may Jackson and Johnson agree with based on their findings? A. Past experience and achievements promote success. B. Peer recognition is the only goal of their research. C. Learning new skills is less important than innovation. D. Imperfections in the theorem fuel their exploration. 6. Which of the following words can best describe Jackson and Johnson? A. Organized and modest. B. Creative and generous. C. Understanding and knowledgeable. D. Intelligent and determined. 7. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The process of obtaining proofs. B. The improvement of the theorem. C. The impact of the teens’ achievement. D. The summary of the teens’ findings. C There is joy in giving but research from the University of Bath shows that personalisation can transform a gift from a mere object into a more meaningful experience that raises receivers’ self-worth and makes them feel more valued. Personalized gift giving generates “indirect pride” in receivers, a unique emotional response. “Indirect pride also mirrors the giver’s satisfaction from putting thought and effort into creating something unique,” said Dr Diletta Acuti, a marketing expert at the University of Bath School of Management. Researchers conducted four experimental studies. In the first study,74participants gifted clothes to a friend — some personalized. Gift appreciation was assessed by asking receivers to change any items of the gift they did not like. Receivers of personalised gifts changed fewer clothing items, reflecting greater appreciation. The second experiment involving 134 participants showed videos of T-shirt selection processes, with customized gifts rated as more appreciated regardless of the time spent. The following two online studies with mugs and wristwatches confirmed that personalization increased both gift appreciation and receivers’ self-worth. “Personalisation can be a game-changer when choosing a gift. But it’s not just about selecting a customizable option: you also need to communicate that effort to your receiver. Sharing why you chose elements of the gift or the thought that went into it will make the receiver appreciate it even more. Indeed, this additional effort helps them to connect with the pride you felt in your choices, making the gift even more meaningful,” Dr Acuti said. The study noted that personalisation also had implications for sustainability, as receivers were more like to take care of gifts that they valued more. Brands could benefit too by helping buyers to highlight their personal touch. Using “made by” signals can strengthen the emotional connection between the giver and the receiver. 8. Which belongs to “indirect pride”? A. The receiver’s thrill of unwrapping gifts. B. The giver’s pride in selecting popular gifts. C. The giver’s pleasure in picking a costly item. D. The receiver’s feeling of being truly appreciated. 9. How did the researchers conduct the first study? A. By conducting online surveys. B. By tracking item adjustments. C. By using clothing gifts. D. By collecting givers’ reactions. 10. What does the study imply about personalized gifts? A. Explaining gift ideas increases value. B. They reduce waste by being kept longer. C. They outperform regular gifts in all aspects. D. Brand tools strengthen emotional connections. 11. Which is the best title for this passage? A. Are Personalized Gifts Worth the Effort? B. Why Do Personalized Gifts Mean More? C. Personalized Gifts: Cost and Worth. D. Personalized Gifts: A Modern Trend. D Taylor Swift fans really know how to “Shake It Off” — and shake the ground. Scientists studied how the stadium and ground trembled during one of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts last August. They discovered that dancing fans generated shaking in the ground — earthquake waves that matched the beat of each song. During Swift’s performance of “Shake It Off”, the stands released about as much energy as a magnitude 0.85 earthquake, which is not quite strong enough to be felt by humans. This isn’t the first time scientists have measured quakes from a stadium. In 2011, Seattle Seahawks fans shook their home stadium with cheers after a stunning touchdown. And last July, Swifties rocked the ground at a Seattle concert. The shaking from those events differs from an earthquake. Earthquakes usually last only a few seconds. A “concert quake” can last several minutes. Besides, the ground also moves in different ways during quakes and concerts. Earthquakes happen when big tectonic (地壳的) plates move around. Those motions perpetually change the ground. In contrast, the shaking caused by crowds “is more like splashing (泼水) in a pool,” explains Gabrielle Tepp, a professor at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. “You see the waves coming out, but then once you’re done splashing, it just goes back to normal.” The “concert quake” doesn’t usually deform the Earth. Tepp and her colleagues used similar instruments to detect earthquakes and concert quakes. In the new study, they set up a portable speaker next to a motion sensor in their lab and turned the speaker volume all the way up. They also played Swift’s “Love Story” at the speakers’ highest volume. Tepp even jumped around near the sensor while dancing to the last chorus. The sensor picked up the quaking which matched that from the concert only when Tepp was jumping around, which suggests that the shaking measured at the concert came from fans jumping and dancing, too. The findings tell scientists about more than just concert shaking. Understanding how a stadium quakes in response to a large crowd could help make buildings safer, says Golos. “We can also better understand human behavior using such seismic data”, she says. “I think there’s a lot of interesting information hidden in there.” 12. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To introduce the main argument. B. To provide background information. C. To offer a convincing explanation. D. To conclude the previous findings. 13. What does the underlined word “perpetually” mean in paragraph 2? A. randomly. B. slightly. C. permanently. D. regularly. 14. Why did Tepp and her colleagues conduct the experiment? A. To test the effectiveness of the motion sensor. B. To figure out the quake source of the concert. C. To prove that Taylor Swift’s songs can cause ground-shaking. D. To study the relationship between music volume and ground-shaking. 15. What’s the significance of the research? A It guides fans to behave well at a concert. B. It predicts when and where an earthquake will happen. C. It improves stage design and sound effect of a concert. D. It lays a foundation for creating safer architecture. Wearable fitness trackers have evolved beyond being something cool and novel worn by athletes and fitness enthusiasts to being worn by nearly everyone. ___16___. All except Dylan. He knew his grandma Mariam couldn’t afford one. The schoolbag felt like a burden on Dylan’s shoulders as he walked home. As he approached their little cottage, he spotted Mariam in their little backyard. “Grandma I need to talk to you,” He said. She hurried in. “What’s wrong?” Dylan begged. “Can... can you buy me a superhero sweater, grandma? It has to be Spiderman!” Mariam’s voice choked as she said she’d see what she could do. With trembling hands, she counted the small savings she’d saved up. Ten dollars. Then she told Dylan she’d be right back. As Mariam entered the only kids’ clothing store, her eyes lit up when she spotted a Spiderman sweater. She asked the shopkeeper how much it was. The shopkeeper smiled and said it was their last one and cost sixty-five dollars. Mariam’s face fell and thanked the shoekeeper. Back home, Mariam found Dylan lying in bed and sobbed. As soon as she heard his breathing even out, Mariam sprang into action. She carefully removed the worn Spiderman poster from the wall and started her sewing machine. As the first rays of sunlight shone through the window, Mariam held up her creation — a woolen Spiderman sweater. “Dylan! I’ve got a surprise for you!” Mariam called out. Dylan’s eyes widened as he saw the sweater. Immediately, disappointment flashed across his face, but he covered it with a smile. “I love it, grandma!” he shouted. “Have a great day, my little superhero!” she called after him. The classroom broke into laughter the moment Dylan stepped through the door. One boy shouted that Dylan’s grandma must have mistaken him for a sheep. A girl said loudly that it probably smelled like old people. Tears streamed down Dylan’s cheeks. He rushed from the room and nearly knocked into his teacher Mr. Pickford in the hallway. “Dylan? What’s wrong?” Mr. Pickford called after him. The laughter died instantly as the children noticed his presence. Mr. Pickford strode (大步走) across the classroom, a plan already forming in his mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the cottage, Mariam was surrounded by parents waving money for her hand-made sweaters. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 安庆示范高中2025届高三联考 英 语 试 题 注意事项: 1. 1. It not only helps us acquire practical skills but also cultivates qualities like perseverance and responsibility. Last month, I joined a community volunteer activity to clean up a local park. We worked together, picking up litter and pruning overgrown bushes. What impressed me most was seeing the park transform into a cleaner and more beautiful place. Through this experience, I’ve realized that every small effort counts. When we work with dedication, we can make a difference and create a better world for ourselves and others. One possible version: Mr. Pickford strode across the classroom, a plan already forming in his mind. He turned to the class and said firmly, “Today, we’re going to talk about kindness and creativity.” He explained how Dylan’s grandmother had poured her love into making the sweater by hand, staying up all night just to make her grandson happy. “That sweater isn’t just wool — it’s a symbol of care and sacrifice,” Mr. Pickford added. The room fell silent as the children absorbed his words. One by one, they began to apologize to Dylan for their thoughtless comments. By the end of the day, several students even asked Dylan if his grandma could teach them or their parents how to make similar sweaters. In the cottage, Mariam was surrounded by parents waving money for her hand-made sweaters. Word had spread quickly through the school about the unique Spiderman sweater, and soon, everyone wanted one. Mariam, overwhelmed but grateful, accepted orders while explaining she would only use eco-friendly materials. Neighbors joined in to help, and what started as an act of love for her grandson turned into a small community business. Dylan watched proudly as his grandma transformed embarrassment into triumph. From then on, wearing his handmade sweater felt like wearing a true superhero badge — not because of its design, but because it carried the strength of family and resilience.
