Right now, you all have short-term ID. Those will only last until the end of the week, when classes start. After that, you’ll need your long-term Bryce College ID — to get onto campus, to use the library, and a lot of other things. And to get your long-term ID, you’ll need to go to the student administration office, which is on the ground floor of the main building — don’t worry, I’ll show you where that is. Now, you have short-term ID until the end of the week, but I wouldn’t wait until then if I were you. To get your long-term ID, you need to show your acceptance letter from the college plus one other form of ID documents, like a driver’s license, or a passport. You just fill out a form; they’ll take your picture and make your card while you wait. It takes only a few minutes. Um, okay, so, are there any questions before we start the tour?

Whenever it comes to holidays, my mother makes fun of my sister and me about how we “make out like robbers”. She is referring to the fact that we are half Jewish and half Indian, so we receive gifts on both the festivals of lights, Hanukkah and Diwali. Though my mother teases us, I do not mind getting two sets of gifts!
Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month, which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families, we light a menorah (大烛台) and say a prayer each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do “hot and cold” for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say “hot” and when we walk farther away, they say “cold”. We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.
Diwali is observed on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October/ November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does a pooja, or prayers, in honor of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, the pooja includes washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just place a few candles outside. We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.
Both holidays have different histories and stories. We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!
24. Why does the author receive gifts on both Hanukkah and Diwali?
A. She lives in a well-off family.
B. She lives in two different countries.
C. Her parents like observing their different cultures.
D. Her parents like spending money buying gifts for her.
25. What does the underlined phrase “hot and cold” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A kind of Hanukkah game. B. A riddle written on lights.
C. A sort of Hanukkah gift. D. A can of festival drink.
26. What do Hanukkah and Diwali have in common?
A. They share the same history and culture.
B. They are both related to the origin of lights.
C. They get the families to do their prayers.
D. They are celebrated by both Jews and Indians.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards Hanukkah and Diwali?
A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Appreciative. D. Critical.

Cities can boost happiness just as much as the countryside — as long as they are scenic, according to experts.
Naturally open spaces are typically considered to create a better mood. But in the first study of its kind, scientists found areas with lots of old buildings but not much green space can be just as good for our well-being. And the effect could be the same regardless of the weather, how wealthy the area is, the activities that take place there and the day of the week.
The research leader said, “We find that people are indeed happier in more scenic environments. Built-up areas, which might consist of characterful buildings or bridges, also have a positive link to happiness.”
The researchers made a survey among more than 15,000 users of the app Happiness. People are asked to report on their happiness multiple times per day while recording their current location, who they are with and what they are currently doing.
To determine whether individuals are happier in more scenic environments, the team considered a range of factors that may also play a part. For example, traveling to or from your work is negatively associated with happiness, while leisure activities such as resting, gardening and walking are positively associated with happiness.
The researchers said, “We find that people do report themselves to be happier when in a more scenic location, even after controlling for weather, activities, companionship, weekdays or weekends.”
Although natural elements such as ponds, rivers and forest paths improved ratings on a photograph, so did churches, cottages and towers.
A study surveyed 400,000 people across Canada using a widely-recognized happiness scale. They found that city dwellers (居民) have higher salaries, higher education levels and lower unemployment rates. However, that meant nothing in terms of joy: people who lived in the countryside were, on average, eight times happier than people in urban areas.
28. Which of the following is the key factor that leads to one’s happiness?
A. Beautiful places. B. Tall buildings.
C. Fine weather. D. Rich places.
29. What can we know from the passage?
A. City dwellers are much happier than those living in the countryside.
B. One is happier when he lives in an area with lots of buildings.
C. One is happier to do the gardening than to travel to work.
D. People are unhappier to rest at home than to make money.
30. Which is mentioned as what makes a photo look better?
A. Railway tracks, ponds and rivers. B. Forest paths, cottages and towers.
C. Flying planes, forests and crops. D. City buildings, subways and ships.
31. Where can you most likely read this passage?
A. In a photography book. B. In a guidebook.
C. In a technology report. D. In a health magazine.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. D

While facial recognition technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it’s now being applied to aid the protection of giant pandas, Xinhua News Agency reported recently.
A nature reserve has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared (红外线) cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation two years ago, and has captured numerous photos and videos of pandas engaged in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides scientific data to help us grasp pandas’ living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible.
A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It’s shown that by equipping the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021 alone, this monitoring system captured 2,896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed 3,218 seconds of footage, showcasing the reserve’s sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in panda population there.
Head of the reserve’s administration Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the near future.”
32. What does the underlined word “discern” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Solve. B. Pose. C. Reduce. D. Detect.
33. What can be learned about the new technology from the study?
A. It precisely recognizes any species.
B. It makes panda population rise rapidly.
C. It contributes to species data collection.
D. It understands pandas’ facial expressions.
34. Which can be inferred from what Liu Xingming said?
A. The giant panda population is healthier.
B. The system hasn’t solved all problems.
C. The system has no need to be improved.
D. The giant panda’s habitat has changed.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Panda Facial Recognition Collecting and Using Database
B. Functions of AI-enabled Facial Recognition Technology
C. AI-aided Monitoring System for Better Panda Protection
D. A Breakthrough in Video Monitoring System

Reading nonfiction books can help build determination and establish routines for many people. And this improved lifestyle will reduce their anxiety. When it comes to fiction, on the other hand, people often refuse to accept the idea. ____36____
The important benefit of reading fiction is that it will help change your angles. When you read a self-help book, you often consume a series of lessons with examples and practical advice. ____37____ Fiction, in contrast, gives you access to the struggles, and ideas of various characters. The exchange of information is multi-sided. When considering different angles on an event, you’ll realize you can’t control everything.
____38____ When we’re dealing with daily stress factors we feel like the world is falling upon us. Characters in novels face challenges, but we as readers are separate from their experiences. As such, we have a bird’s eye view over what’s happening in the story. And this view is what we need to reduce our anxiety in the real world.
Fiction stories help us understand the power of change in both stories and real life. Through stories, you are beginning a journey and witnessing progress in a fictional world. These changes are imaginary. ____39____ The Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The boy’s evolution in The Alchemist reflects life. ____40____ But after many attempts, we realize that our heart wasn’t in it.

When it comes to fiction, on the other hand, people often refuse to accept the idea.(对许多人来说,阅读非小说类书籍可以帮助他们树立决心,建立日常生活习惯。

根据后文“When we’re dealing with daily stress factors, we feel like the world is falling upon us. Characters in novels face challenges, but we as readers are separate from their experiences. As such, we have a bird’s eye view over what’s happening in the story. (当我们处理日常压力因素时,我们觉得世界要压垮我们了。小说中的人物面临挑战,但我们作为读者与他们的经历是分开的。因此,我们对故事中发生的事情有一个鸟瞰视角。)”可知,此段主要讲阅读小说能让我们从一定距离看世界;F选项“Fiction gives us a precious chance to see the entire world from distance.(小说给了我们一个难得的机会从远处看整个世界。)”符合段落主旨,引领下文。故选F。
【39题详解】
前文“Fiction stories help us understand the power of change in both stories and real life. Through stories, you are beginning a journey and witnessing progress in a fictional world. These changes are imaginary.(小说故事帮助我们理解故事和现实生活中变化的力量。通过故事,你开始了一段旅程,见证了一个虚构世界的进步。这些变化都是虚构的。)”指出小说中的变化是虚构的;空后“The Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The boy’s evolution in The Alchemist reflects life.(以《炼金术士》为例,主角花了几个月的时间去寻找宝藏。他相信找到奖品会给他带来快乐。在整个航行过程中,他经历了许多挫折,他对宝藏的看法也发生了变化。《炼金术士》中男孩的进化反映了生活。)”举例说明小说中的变化反映生活,B选项“But they often mirror events that could happen in real life.(但它们常常反映了在现实生活中可能发生的事件)”承上启下,符合语境。故选B。
【40题详解】

Students from different grades participated enthusiastically, bringing handmade crafts, books, snacks, etc., and setting up stands to sell them at affordable prices. So much excitement was in the air that teachers and parents were attracted and participated. 72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The annual Halloween arrived, during which kids dressed in traditional clothes went to neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
Allison lived in a small town. That day after dinner, Allison put on her dress her father had just bought for her. The dress was cheap and second-hand because her family was poor. But Allison still thanked her dad and said, “Everyone will love my dress!” Then, she left for neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
On the way, she came across Anna and her friends and wanted to join them. “No! Look at your dress! It’s ugly!” Anna said. Her friends also laughed. “Look at our dresses, especially mine! It’s new and beautiful,” Anna added. Her friends nodded, and in some way they were right. Anna’s dress was shiny and looked expensive. She always had the best clothes because her parents were rich.
Allison was shocked and sad. The kids not only disliked her dress but made fun of it. “You can’t come with us!” Anna stressed. “We would never hang out with you!” The other kids agreed and laughed. They all left to start collecting candy for the night while Allison was left alone, embarrassed in the middle of the street.
Anyway she knew all the neighbors. She often helped around carrying their groceries and helping them with their gardens. People around there knew her. She didn’t need to hangout with Anna or her friends. “I’ll go just alone,” the little girl said to herself and started walking.
She as well as Anna and her friends walked in the same direction: towards their first neighbor Mrs Vaughan’s house. But Allison walked behind and kept her distance from them. And she stopped when Anna and her friends were near Mrs Vaughan’s house.
Just then, Mrs Vaughan looked out of her window. She noticed that Allison was being excluded by Anna and her friends. She knew it was probably because of Allison’s poor dress. She immediately felt pity for Allison, who often helped her and other neighbors. She decided to give Allison much more candy as a reward and teach Anna and her friends a lesson.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Anna looked up and said, “Our clothes are more beautiful! But you gave Allison more candy! Why?”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When Anna and her friends knocked on her door, Mrs Vaughan opened it. The girls greeted her, showed off their beautiful clothes and asked for candy. Mrs Vaughan, who held a bag of sweets, asked them to wait for a moment. Then, she waved to Allison, calling out, “Dear, come here!” When Allison came, Mrs Vaughan said, “Oh, how beautiful you are today!” Then, she gave Allison most of her candy although the girl declined. When Allison walked away, Mrs Vaughan divided the rest of the candy among Anna and her friends, who were a little angry and confused.
Anna looked up and said, “Our clothes are more beautiful! But you gave Allison more candy! Why?” Mrs Vaughan looked down calmly and explained that Allison was always friendly to neighbors. “She has great inner beauty. Inner beauty is more important. Why not be friends with her?” Mrs Vaughan added. Hearing that, Anna and her friends’ faces turned red and they realized they had done something wrong. They said goodbye to Mrs Vaughan, caught up with Allison, and sincerely invited Allison to join them. Allison nodded gladly and had new friends, who would no longer judge her by her clothes.

C Fine weather.

Head of the reserve’s administration, Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat.
34 Which can be inferred from what Liu Xingming said?
A. The giant panda population is healthier.
B. The system hasn’t solved all problems.
C. The system has no need to be improved.
D. The giant panda’s habitat has changed.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Panda Facial Recognition Collecting and Using Database
B. Functions of AI-enabled Facial Recognition Technology
C. AI-aided Monitoring System for Better Panda Protection
D. A Breakthrough in Video Monitoring System

Anyway, she knew all the neighbors.
