根据第一段“Tiny Forest is a small forest, which fits into the size of a tennis court and can help restore ecosystems, is a method created by Indian engineer Shubhendu Sharma, based on the method of Japanese Akira Miyawaki to restore natural and native forests.(微型森林是一片小森林,面积相当于一个网球场大小,能够帮助恢复生态系统。这是印度工程师舒本杜・夏尔马创造的一种方法,基于日本的宫胁昭恢复自然和本土森林的方法。)”可知,该倡议最初的目的是促进森林恢复。故选A。 Soil preparation with focus on nutrition and drainage(注重营养和排水的土壤准备)”也与土壤质量相关;“・Requires 2-3 years of maintenance before becoming self-sustaining(在实现自我维持之前需要2到3年的维护)”涉及了维护时长(Care duration)。 Reconnects children and communities with nature(让儿童和社区重新与自然建立联系)”可知,孩子们从这个倡议中能够更多地接触自然。故选C。 B While Sharfuz Shifat was working at the Meliora LaunchPad in his sophomore year, he had the vision of making an efficient social media network for people to work on their ideas. “The world would be a better place if you could easily find people who have the same interests, vision and complementary (互补的) skills to build something,” he said. He then reached out to Carolyn Zelicof, Andrew Nyaisonga and Sandesh Paudel. With their team assembled (聚集), the four co-founders were now ready to realize their vision. They developed CrossRoads Create, a social media app, which aims to provide a stage to assemble teams for projects. The app currently has a landing page where you can sign up to become a first user and provide feedback on the product. Site visitors are met with the logo and the motto: “Where ideas meet action.” Minimizing cost was one of the main challenges of the development process. The two engineers, Nyaisonga and Paudel, were able to develop the platform without overhead costs (间接成本) while keeping large-use in mind. Nyaisonga explained: “There is an easier way to do something, but it might not be cheap. So, we had to choose the harder way for some things.” Juggling schoolwork, job applications, and the app development was another curveball thrown their way. “But when you’re really passionate about it, you can do it. Not everyone has to drop out of college to build a startup.” Shifat said. Wanting to make the platform as accessible to users as possible, the team decided that the platform would be free to use. CrossRoads Create will be launched soon, and the founders have been busy preparing their launch strategy, promoting their product through heavy use of social media marketing campaigns, maintaining their landing page. “We are all much invested in this idea, and we are all really excited to see where this goes,” Zelicof said. 4. What is Sharfuz Shifat’s vision? A. To create a shared and productive platform. B. To improve the efficiency of social network. C. To build a world of complementary skills. D. To set up a more friendly working environment. 5. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about the app? A. Page contents. B. Marketing process. C. Function performance. D. Product description. 6. What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “curveball” in paragraph 4? A. Specific task. B. Major barrier. C. Tight schedule. D. Favorable chance. 7. What does the team expect of CrossRoads Create? A. Focus on social media promotion. B. Expand user reach without charge. C. Attract the market interest quickly. D. Invest more efforts in development. A 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第一段中的“While Sharfuz Shifat was working at the Meliora LaunchPad in his sophomore year, he had the vision of making an efficient social media network for people to work on their ideas. (在Sharfuz Shifat大二期间在Meliora LaunchPad工作时,他有一个愿景,即打造一个高效的社交媒体网络,让人们可以在上面实践他们的想法)”和“The world would be a better place if you could easily find people who have the same interests, vision and complementary skills to build something (如果能轻松找到有相同兴趣、愿景和互补技能的人来共同创造,世界将会变得更加美好)”可知,Sharfuz Shifat 的设想是创建一个高效的社交媒体网络,让人们可以基于自己的想法进行合作,也就是创建一个共享且能产生成果的平台。故选A项。 根据第二段中的“They developed CrossRoads Create, a social media app, which aims to provide a stage to assemble teams for projects. The app currently has a landing page where you can sign up to become a first user and provide feedback on the product. Site visitors are met with the logo and the motto: “Where ideas meet action.” 根据第四段划线词所在句“Juggling schoolwork, job applications, and the app development was another curveball thrown their way. (兼顾学业、求职申请和应用程序开发是他们面临的又一个curveball) ”并结合后文提到的“But when you’re really passionate about it, you can do it. Not everyone has to drop out of college to build a startup. Shifat said. (但当你真正热爱它时,你就能做到。不是每个人都必须为了创办一家初创公司而从大学退学。”希法特说)”可知,同时处理学业、求职和应用程序开发是他们面临的另一个需要克服的困难。由此可知,划线词“curveball”意思应与“Major barrier(主要障碍)”最接近。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Wanting to make the platform as accessible to users as possible, the team decided that the platform would be free to use. CrossRoads Create will be launched soon, and the founders have been busy preparing their launch strategy, promoting their product through heavy use of social media marketing campaigns, maintaining their landing page. C Would you turn down the chance to become a genius? We have long been fascinated by quick fixes that could increase our intelligence. Today, people’s hopes lie in brain training apps as a speedy “digital pill”, some of which claim to result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick fix all it is cracked up to be? There are plenty of brain training apps, mostly on smartphones, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic, memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. The more you play, the smarter you will get, the app claims. The use of game mechanics for serious purposes has become widespread with the invention of the Internet and smartphones. Brain training apps are at the frontline. Many of the apps say they are backed by “science”, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist. The notion that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini games every day is contrary to what we have discovered about how humans think and learn. Several major studies of brain training apps, surveying a diverse range of thousands of users across a wide variety of apps, have found that they have almost no effect on users’ performance. A 2021 study by researchers at Western University in Canada discovered that “brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive functioning in the ‘real world’, even after extensive training periods”. The positive effects that have been found are limited to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained on, such as the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little application to other skills. So, if your career involves being able to do sums quickly or remember phone numbers, you may be satisfied with these apps. But if you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or construct a complex mind-map, I am afraid you will want to look elsewhere. 8. What is the main feature of brain training apps? A. Complex scientific support. B. Expert psychological increase. C. Game-driven mental enhancement. D. Advanced smartphone technologies. 9. What does the author think of the apps’ claim? A. They are supported by scientists. B. They receive widespread employment. C. They go against human learning systems. D. They make the intelligence progress simple. 10. In which case could the apps users benefit according to the Canada research? A. When they can use the skills elsewhere. B. When the apps impact the cognitive abilities. C. When they have longer training periods. D. When the games are limited to particular tasks. 11. What is the suitable title for the passage? A. Brain Training Apps Are Booming B. There Is No App for a Smarter Brain C. Power Your Brain with Scientific Apps D. Game Proves Ineffective in Intelligence 【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段“There are plenty of brain training apps, mostly on smartphones, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic, memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. The more you play, the smarter you will get, the app claims.(有很多大脑训练应用程序,大多在智能手机上,但它们都有相同的特点:它们把像简单算术、记忆测试以及逻辑和模式匹配问题这样的脑力练习变成快速游戏。 根据第三段“Many of the apps say they are backed by ‘science’, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist. The notion that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini games every day is contrary to what we have discovered about how humans think and learn.(许多应用程序都说它们有‘科学’支持,作为一名前神经科学家,我对这一说法感到惊讶。 根据第四段“A 2021 study by researchers at Western University in Canada discovered that ‘brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive functioning in the ‘real world’, even after extensive training periods’. The positive effects that have been found are limited to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained on, such as the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little application to other skills.(加拿大西安大略大学的研究人员在 2021 年的一项研究中发现,‘即使经过长时间的训练,大脑训练对‘现实世界’中的认知功能也没有明显影响’。 There Is No App for a Smarter Brain(没有适用于更聪明大脑的应用程序) 符合文章主旨。故选B。 D Meditation training can significantly enhance women’s empathy (同理心) towards strangers, suggesting that meditation can improve our ability to understand and experience other people’s feelings. “When you practice mindfulness meditation, feelings of connectivity, empathy, and sympathy naturally arise,” says Fadel Zeidan at the University of California, San Diego. He and his research team decided to explore this in women and their romantic partners. In their study, they employed a tool to simulate (模拟) the sense of burning on the skin without causing any actual damage to the participants. They conducted experiments with 29 women, their partners, and a separate group of strangers. While their brains were being scanned, the women observed videos showing others experiencing a painful experience and rated their own feelings of discomfort on a point/ degree of 0 to 10, which served as a measure of their empathy. The findings showed that, on average, the participants experienced 49% more empathy for their romantic partners compared to strangers. Notably, the brain scans also indicated greater activity in the precuneus, a region associated with self-reflection and perspective-taking, when the women viewed their partners in pain. Previous studies have suggested that meditation practices may enhance activity in the precuneus, which supports their findings. To further investigate this relationship, the researchers had 17 of the participants complete eight weeks of meditation training and repeated the pain experiments. Results showed that, at both points, the women displayed more empathy not only for their partners but also for the strangers. Remarkably, the level of empathy expressed for strangers increased significantly, to the point where the difference in numbers between the empathy felt for partners and strangers was no longer significant. Although the research team is still in the process of analyzing the brain scans of the participants, Zeidan notes that even four weeks of consistent mindfulness meditation can boost empathy. This suggests that meditation may broaden our ability to understand and connect with those around us. 12. What were women participants required to do in the experiment? A. Scan the brain. B. Experience the skin burning. C. Watch a video of skin damage. D. Self-report unpleasant feelings. 13. What can we know from the precuneus according to Fadel Zeidan’s findings? A. It can be improved through meditation. B. It showed 49% greater activeness in strangers. C. It involved in more sense of self for romantic partners. D. It displayed the same level in empathy for both groups. 14. What is the focus of the further investigation? A. Repeating the experiment and meditation. B. Meditation duration and empathy increase. C. More supportive evidence for previous results. D. Analysis of the precuneus activities and pain levels. 15. How does Zeidan think of the results of the research? A. Satisfying. B. Unexpected. C. Interesting. D. Concerning. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“While their brains were being scanned, the women observed videos showing others experiencing a painful experience and rated their own feelings of discomfort on a point/ degree of 0 to 10, which served as a measure of their empathy.(在扫描她们大脑的同时,这些女性观看了其他人经历痛苦的视频,并对自己的不适感从0到10进行评分,以此来衡量她们的同理心)”可知,女性参与者需要自我报告不愉快的感受。 根据第三段中“Notably, the brain scans also indicated greater activity in the precuneus, a region associated with self reflection and perspective taking, when the women viewed their partners in pain.(值得注意的是,大脑扫描还显示,当女性看到伴侣处于痛苦中时,楔前叶(一个与自我反思和换位思考相关的区域)的活动更活跃)”可推断,楔前叶更多地涉及对伴侣的自我感知。 根据第四段“To further investigate this relationship, the researchers had 17 of the participants complete eight weeks of meditation training and repeated the pain experiments.(为了进一步研究这种关系,研究人员让17名参与者完成了为期八周的冥想训练,并重复了疼痛实验)”以及第五段“Zeidan notes that even four weeks of consistent mindfulness meditation can boost empathy.(泽丹指出,即使连续四周进行正念冥想也能增强同理心)”可知,进一步调查的重点是冥想时长和同理心提升的关系。 根据最后一段“Although the research team is still in the process of analyzing the brain scans of the participants, Zeidan notes that even four weeks of consistent mindfulness meditation can boost empathy. This suggests that meditation may broaden our ability to understand and connect with those around us.(虽然研究团队仍在分析参与者的大脑扫描结果,但泽丹指出,即使连续四周进行正念冥想也能增强同理心。 故选A项。 Life is challenging, and full of setbacks that frustrate you moving forward. ____16____ Shunmyo Masuno, a Zen Buddhist monk, shares in his book, “How to Let Things Go”, how you can avoid making things more difficult for yourself. There may be almost dark side of things when experiencing challenges, but “will spending lots of time worrying help?” Masuno wrote. “It will not.” The best thing to do in challenging situations is to think as positively as possible, so you can search for the best solution. ____17____ While it can be helpful to be open to other people’s opinions, you should avoid giving too much weight to what other people have to say, Masuno said. All these opinions may confuse you and impede (妨碍) you to decide what you should do. ____18____ Any decision you make should be one you feel comfortable. ____19____ This is why you should remind yourself that both successes and failures are already in the past. Change is the only constant. If you only look to your past successes for guidance, you can miss future opportunities that can lead to even more success. Being victorious is a natural desire the human has. ____20____ When you run into situations where you feel slighted (冷落), don’t bother how unfair it is. “Devote your fighting spirit to improving your abilities,” Masuno wrote. A. To avoid this, you must first set your inner balance. B. Keep in mind that you are the master of your own life. C. You have to be intentional by reminding yourself of this situation. D. The more you’re able to look on the bright side, the less anxious you’ll feel. E. It’s important to remember that everything varies from one moment to the next. F. But sometimes, it’s fine to have goals and pursue them but don’t so mind the outcome. G. Fortunately, there are ways you can lighten your load and take control of some outcomes. G 17. D 18. B 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Life is challenging, and full of setbacks that frustrate you moving forward.(生活充满挑战,到处都是阻碍你前进的挫折)”指出生活存在挑战和挫折的问题。G选项“Fortunately, there are ways you can lighten your load and take control of some outcomes.(幸运的是,有一些方法可以减轻你的负担并掌控一些结果)”与上文构成转折关系,引出下文要介绍应对生活挑战的方法,上下文语意衔接自然。故选G项。 【17题详解】 上文“The best thing to do in challenging situations is to think as positively as possible, so you can search for the best solution.(在充满挑战的情况下,最好的做法是尽可能积极地思考,这样你就能找到最佳解决方案)”强调在挑战中要积极思考找解决方案。D选项“The more you’re able to look on the bright side, the less anxious you’ll feel.(你越能看到事情好的一面,你就会越不焦虑)”进一步说明积极看待事情的好处,与上文逻辑一致,且承接上文积极思考的话题,句中“look on the bright side”与上文“think as positively as possible”相照应。故选D项。 【18题详解】 上文“While it can be helpful to be open to other people’s opinions, you should avoid giving too much weight to what other people have to say, Masuno said. All these opinions may confuse you and impede (妨碍) you to decide what you should do.(枡野俊明说,虽然听取别人的意见会有帮助,但你应该避免过分看重别人的话。 B选项“Keep in mind that you are the master of your own life.(记住你是自己生活的主人)”表明要自己掌控生活,不受他人过多干扰,与上文逻辑相符,能承接上文观点。故选B项。 【19题详解】 下文“This is why you should remind yourself that both successes and failures are already in the past. Change is the only constant.(这就是为什么你应该提醒自己,成功和失败都已成为过去。 E选项“It’s important to remember that everything varies from one moment to the next.(重要的是要记住,事情每时每刻都在变化)”引出下文对事物变化性的阐述,与下文逻辑紧密,且能为下文观点做铺垫。故选E项。 【20题详解】 上文“Being victorious is a natural desire the human has.(获胜是人类的自然欲望)”指出人类渴望胜利。F选项“But sometimes, it’s fine to have goals and pursue them but don’t so mind the outcome.(但有时候,有目标并去追求它们是可以的,但不要太在意结果)”与上文构成转折关系,提出在追求胜利时不要过于看重结果的观点,与下文“When you run into situations where you feel slighted (冷落), don’t bother how unfair it is.(当你遇到被冷落的情况,不要在意有多不公平,要专注提升能力)”的内容相呼应。 I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it — whether it be playing the piano, or drawing. He and his friends were going on a trip to Hunza and beyond, spending days planning every detail. In just a week, they would be off. “Oh boy, I am so stoked for this!” he exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement. “I can’t wait to be off!” “Dad, can I go to the mall please? I have to get some stuff for the trip,” Hamza asked his father, who was reading a book, with a slight smile. His father closed the book, adjusted his bookmark, looked at him and replied, “As long as you come back by eight.” Hamza exploded with happiness and relief. He rushed to the mall to buy the supplies needed for the trip. Hamza brought out the list of things to buy that he and his friends had made and went through it as he grabbed a shopping trolley. On the list were three tents, two duffle bags, packs of water bottles, a thermos and a set of traveling knives. Additionally, Hamza planned to get some warm jackets and sweatshirts, as well as a couple of blocks of fire starters and some coal. As he kept the list inside his pocket, he heard the sound of the message ring of his phone. He decided to check it first before shopping, in case it was something important. It was a message on his collage classmates’ chat group. It was Shahzad, an ex-classmate, who had sent a message, asking for prayers for his mother who was in a serious condition in a hospital, which was just a couple of blocks away from the supermarket. Shahzad was not really a very close friend of Hamza, since Shahzad was a quiet boy who usually sat in the corner, while Hamza was typically in the front row. Shahzad lived in the college hostel’s and rarely interacted with others. But Shahzad was still someone he knew, and being a kind-hearted person, Hamza decided to first go to the hospital Shahzad had mentioned in the message, since it was nearby, and then come back and do his shopping. Hamza left the mall and walked to the hospital to see if he could be of some help. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hamza moved in front of his friend and handed over the credit card his father had given him to use. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Hamza left the mall and walked to the hospital to see if he could be of some help. When he reached the hospital, he found Shahzad in the waiting room and told him that the minute he saw the massage he came here to see if there was any need for help. Shahzad was about to reply with “No, just prayers”, when he was asked, “Are you going to deposit advance for the surgery now?” Shahzad said he didn’t have the full amount; he pleaded to start with his mother’s surgery, and he would pay later. But the hospital firmly required an advanced payment or the surgery would be delayed. On hearing this, Shahzad was in distress. Hamza moved in front of his friend and handed over the credit card his father had given him to use. Shahzad refused to accept his favor at first. “This is what friends are for” Hamza assured his friend. A couple of hours later, the doctor came to inform that the surgery was a success. “Thank you, Hamza, I don’t know what I would have done if you had not arrived.” Shahzad hugged Hamza with gratitude. Hamza told his parents what had happened, and they were very proud of what he had done to help his friend. Although he didn’t shop as that money was spent on someone who really needed it, the happiness Hamza saw on Shahzad’s face for the success of his mother’s surgery was greater than any joy that he would have felt on a holiday. 词汇激活 行为类: ①到达:reach/get to ②答复:reply/answer ③拒绝:refuse/decline 情绪类: ①感激:gratitude/thankfulness ②自豪:be proud of/take pride in 【点睛】【高分句型1】On hearing this, Shahzad was in distress. B While Sharfuz Shifat was working at the Meliora LaunchPad in his sophomore year, he had the vision of making an efficient social media network for people to work on their ideas. 9. Game Proves Ineffective in Intelligence D Meditation training can significantly enhance women’s empathy (同理心) towards strangers, suggesting that meditation can improve our ability to understand and experience other people’s feelings. To further investigate this relationship the researchers had 17 of the participants complete eight weeks of meditation training and repeated the pain experiments. D. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
