Due to China’s rapid development pace in artificial intelligence technologies, more companies have’ noted the huge business potential in AI companionship sectors, as simulated (仿真的) AI pets with adorable appearances gaining increasing popularity among Chinese consumers.
Zhang Yi, CEO of the iiMedia Research Institute, told the Global Times on Sunday that consumers’ demand for emotional support and the capability of current AI technologies offer this type of products greater business potential.
A student surnamed Su, who is also an AI technology fan, told the Global Times on Sunday that she bought “Boo Boo, ” a simulated AI robotic pet developed by Hangzhou-based Genmoor Technology. “I first learned about the product during a major assignment investigation and remembered it, ” said Su, “I decided to buy it out of curiosity, but especially because of its adorable hairy appearance and the color of its fur, which is just like my dog’s. ”
Boo Boo is currently available on Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao priced at 1, 399 yuan ($193. 19). Over 300 units have been sold, with a 100 percent positive feedback rate in the last three months, the product’s page showed. The AI robotic pet can develop different emotions based on its interactions with the owner and make pet-like sounds, said the staffer, noting that it is not suitable for children under three years old.
Su stated that the advantage of having an AI pet is that it doesn’t require extra spending on food and pet house, or time for walks every day, while noting that it still lacks interaction flexibility and real companionship when compared with real dogs or cats.

C
A decade ago, humanity launched around 200 objects into space per year. Now we launch more than 2,600, with no sign of slowing down. This rapid expansion of human activity in outer space has filled Earth orbit with space trash (垃圾), from dead satellites to used-up rocket parts.
Currently there are more than 25,000 pieces of trackable human-made trash orbiting Earth. The more we put up there, the greater the chance that pieces of debris (碎片) will strike working spacecraft, creating even more dangerous trash. The disastrous crash in 2009 between the dead Russian satellite Cosmos 2251 and the operational Iridium satellite, for example, generated nearly 2,000 pieces of debris.
Orbital space is a limited resource, and it’s rapidly being consumed by a few organizations, notably Space X, One Web and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. Space X, for instance, aims to launch tens of thousands more satellites to provide global broadband Internet coverage.
If we keep up this pace, orbital space will become unusable — especially low Earth orbit (LEO). If so, we may lose services we’ve come to rely on: continuous communications, GPS mapping, Internet, Earth monitoring, and more. Today nearly every satellite that is launched is equal to a piece of single-use plastic, in that it is to become debris. We are giving everyone free access without global organization and planning, which means eventually no one may be able to use it.
As we continue to push the boundaries of space exploration and commercialization, there is a growing movement to rethink our approach to using the space environment — to move to a strategy anchored in sound waste-management principles. I believe we must leave behind our “linear space economy,” where we use and abandon, and move toward a “circular space economy” — a way to use space that emphasizes the reuse, recycling, and efficient management of space resources.
Just as we are considering how to preserve ecosystems on Earth for future living creatures, we must think of space as an environment worthy of preservation. In fact, reforming how we operate in space is critical for Earth conservation.
28.What is the main concern about the current use of orbital space?
A.The high costs of launching satellites. B.The space race among countries.
C.The decreasing usable orbital space. D.The risk of crash between debris.
29.Why does the author compare launched satellites to “single-use plastic” in Paragraph 4?
A.They pollute Earth’s environment. B.They are abandoned as trash after use.
C.They are inexpensive to produce. D.They are designed for short-term missions.
30.What solution does the author suggest to the problem of space debris?
A.Using space resources sustainably. B.Relocating all satellites to higher orbits.
C.Banning all commercial satellite launches. D.Prioritizing Earth conservation over space exploration.
31.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To raise a question. B.To make a comparison.
C.To make an appeal. D.To inspire more thoughts.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据第三段中“Orbital space is a limited resource, and it’s rapidly being consumed by a few organizations, notably Space X, One Web and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. (轨道空间是一种有限的资源,且正迅速被少数组织消耗殆尽,其中尤其以SpaceX、OneWeb和亚马逊的“柯伊伯计划”最为突出)”以及第四段中“If we keep up this pace, orbital space will become unusable—especially low Earth orbit (LEO). (如果我们继续这个速度,轨道空间将变得无法使用——尤其是近地轨道(LEO))”可知,当前使用轨道空间的主要担忧是可用的轨道空间正在减少。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Today nearly every satellite that is launched is equal to a piece of single-use plastic, in that it is to become debris. (今天,几乎每一颗发射的卫星都等同于一块一次性塑料,因为它最终会成为碎片)”可知,作者将发射的卫星比作“一次性塑料”,是因为它们在使用后被当作垃圾丢弃。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第五段中“I believe we must leave behind our “linear space economy,” where we use and abandon, and move toward a “circular space economy” — a way to use space that emphasizes the reuse, recycling, and efficient management of space resources. (我认为,我们必须摒弃那种“线性空间经济”——即使用后就丢弃的模式,转而走向一种“循环空间经济”——一种强调空间资源的再利用、回收和高效管理的空间利用方式)”可知,作者建议通过可持续地利用空间资源来解决空间碎片问题。故选A。
根据最后一段“Just as we are considering how to preserve ecosystems on Earth for future living creatures, we must think of space as an environment worthy of preservation. In fact, reforming how we operate in space is critical for Earth conservation. (正如我们在考虑如何保护地球上的生态系统以供未来生物生存一样,我们必须将空间视为一个值得保护的环境。事实上,改革我们在太空中的运作方式对地球保护至关重要)”可知,最后一段的目的是发出呼吁,呼吁人们重视空间环境的保护。故选C。
D
Scientists in Israel have developed a gene-edited hen that could help avoid killing billions of male chicks every year. Male chicks are of no value to the egg-laying industry, since they cannot lay eggs; and they’re unwanted by the meat industry, since they are not fast-growing broilers (肉鸡). An estimated seven billion male chicks are killed annually.
Various attempts to solve the problem have been proposed over the years. Mainly these focus on trying to identify whether a chick is male or female as early as possible so as to abandon it before hatching (孵化).
This latest development, however, takes it to another level by preventing the male chick from developing altogether. The "Golda" hen, as it’s called, has DNA edited into it that stops the development of male embryos (胚胎) when the egg is exposed to blue light for several hours. Female embryos are not affected by the light and hatch and grow as usual. They do not contain any of the edited material, nor do the eggs they lay, so consumers needn't be concerned about consuming genetically modified eggs.
Scientists explain how the gene-edited hens end up with all-female chicks. Females carry a W and a Z chromosome (染色体) (WZ). Males carry two Z chromosomes (ZZ). The Golda hen has a W chromosome and a gene-edited Z* chromosome (WZ*), which stops embryo development when exposed to blue light. If WZ* + ZZ= WZ, + blue light= female chick hatches; If WZ* + ZZ= Z*Z, +blue light= male doesn’t hatch.
The animal welfare organization Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) has been following the research closely for three years, visited the firm, and supports the development. It explained, "The great advantage of this gene-edit is that it appears to have no bad effect on animal health. The next important step is to see whether the hen and the female chicks she produces who will lay eggs for human consumption can go through a commercial lifespan, without any unexpected issues arising."
32.Why are a large number of male chicks killed every year?
A.Their meat tastes better.
B.They are used in scientific researches.
C.They grow more slowly than female ones.
D.They can't bring profits to some industries.
33.What can we learn about the "Golda" hen?
A.Its eggs contain more nutrition than normal ones.
B.Its female embryos are more affected by blue light.
C.Some edited material is contained in its female embryos.
D.Its male embryos will stop growing when exposed to blue light.
34.Which aspect does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the gene-edited hens?
A.Their unique DNA. B.Their reaction to blue light.
C.Their hatching principle. D.Their embryo development.
35.According to CIWF, what will the research focus on next about the gene-edited hens?
A.Whether they will bring profits.
B.Whether they will affect consumers' health.
C.Whether they will cause unpredicted problems.
D.Whether they will replace those without edited genes.
根据文章第一段中的“Male chicks are of no value to the egg-laying industry, since they cannot lay eggs; and they’re unwanted by the meat industry, since they are not fast-growing broilers (肉鸡).(雄性小鸡对产蛋业没有价值,因为它们不能产蛋;肉鸡养殖业也不需要它们,因为它们不是生长迅速的肉鸡)”可知,雄性小鸡对产蛋业和肉鸡养殖业都没有价值,不能为这些行业带来利润,所以每年有大量的雄性小鸡被宰杀。故选D项。
根据文章第三段“The “Golda”hen, as it’s called, has DNA edited into it that stops the development of male embryos (胚胎) when the egg is exposed to blue light for several hours.(这种被称为“Golda”的母鸡,其DNA经过编辑,当鸡蛋在蓝光下照射数小时后,会阻止雄性胚胎的发育)”可知,“Golda”母鸡的DNA经过编辑,当鸡蛋在蓝光下照射数小时后,会阻止雄性胚胎的发育。故选D项。
根据文章第四段“Scientists explain how the gene-edited hens end up with all-female chicks. Females carry a W and a Z chromosome (染色体) (WZ). Males carry two Z chromosomes (ZZ). The Golda hen has a W chromosome and a gene-edited Z* chromosome (WZ), which stops embryo development when exposed to blue light. If WZ + ZZ= WZ, + blue light= female chick hatches; If WZ* + ZZ= ZZ, +blue light= male doesn’t hatch.(科学家解释了基因编辑母鸡是如何生出全雌性小鸡的。
根据文章最后一段中的“The next important step is to see whether the hen and the female chicks she produces who will lay eggs for human consumption can go through a commercial lifespan, without any unexpected issues arising.(下一个重要的步骤是看看这只母鸡和它产下的、将为人类消费产蛋的雌性雏鸡能否在商业生命周期中存活下来,而不会出现任何意外问题)”可知,根据CIWF的说法,下一步的研究将关注基因编辑母鸡是否会引起不可预测的问题。故选C项。

How to communicate better with other people
As people who live in society we need to communicate daily with other people — friends, families, co-workers, our partners and so on, regardless of whether we like social relationships. 36 There are five tips to help you.
Adapt your language. It is necessary that you know how to adapt your language to the training and educational level of the person you are speaking with and to the context where the conversation takes place.
37 Sometimes, when trying to generate a conversation, people say things without really thinking about them. These expressions can give us a wrong idea of what a person really is like. Give yourself a little more time to continue the conversation, so you can get to know the other person better.
Look into the eyes. If you do not look directly into the eyes when you speak, it can give the feeling that you would like to be somewhere else or that the conversation ends as soon as possible. But looking very fixedly without looking away can make the other person uncomfortable. 38
Make people feel comfortable when talking to you. 39 If you detect these types of signals, it is best to make people feel relaxed by making a joke, adapting your oral and gestural language or showing that you care about the person and what they tell you.
Practice active listening. Looking into the eyes, nodding or adding small comments is what is known as active listening. During the conversation, it is necessary to remain silent. 40 Do not have a passive attitude with the subject, and show signs of interest in what they tell you.
A.Do not judge ahead of time.
B.Sometimes, people get nervous when talking to you.
C.Body language can help us solve this problem.
D.Express yourself correctly.
E.However, it is more important to give signals that you are paying attention.
F.So the ideal is to find a balance, then forget about it and do it naturally.
G.Learning to make yourself understood and interact correctly with others is very important.
【答案】36.G 37.A 38.F 39.B 40.E

36.根据上文“As people who live in society we need to communicate daily with other people — friends, families, co-workers, our partners and so on, regardless of whether we like social relationships. (作为生活在社会中的人,我们每天都需要与其他人交流 —— 朋友、家人、同事、我们的伴侣等等,不管我们是否喜欢社会关系。)”以及下文“There are five tips to help you. (有五个建议可以帮助你。)”可知,此处需要一个句子来衔接上下文,说明学习正确沟通的重要性从而引出下文的建议。G选项Learning to make yourself understood and interact correctly with others is very important.
37.根据下文“Sometimes, when trying to generate a conversation, people say things without really thinking about them. These expressions can give us a wrong idea of what a person really is like. Give yourself a little more time to continue the conversation, so you can get to know the other person better. (有时,当试图展开对话时,人们会不假思索地说出一些话。这些表达可能会让我们对一个人的真实样子产生错误的印象。给自己多一点时间继续对话,这样你就能更好地了解对方。)”可知,这段主要讲的是不要因为对方的一些话就过早地对其下判断,要多花时间了解。A选项Do not judge ahead of time. 故选A。
38.根据上文“If you do not look directly into the eyes when you speak, it can give the feeling that you would like to be somewhere else or that the conversation ends as soon as possible. But looking very fixedly without looking away can make the other person uncomfortable. (如果你说话时不直视对方的眼睛,会让人觉得你想去别的地方,或者觉得对话会尽快结束。但是目不转睛地盯着看会让对方感到不舒服。)”可知,这里在说眼神交流的两个极端情况,需要找到一个合适的方式。F选项So the ideal is to find a balance, then forget about it and do it naturally.
39.根据下文“If you detect these types of signals, it is best to make people feel relaxed by making a joke, adapting your oral and gestural language or showing that you care about the person and what they tell you. (如果你察觉到这些类型的信号,最好通过开个玩笑、调整你的口头和手势语言,或者表现出你关心这个人以及他们告诉你的事情,让人们感到放松。)”可知,此处应先提到存在一些让你需要采取措施让对方放松的信号。B选项Sometimes, people get nervous when talking to you.
40.根据上文“During the conversation, it is necessary to remain silent. (在对话过程中,保持沉默是必要的。)”以及下文“Do not have a passive attitude with the subject, and show signs of interest in what they tell you. (不要对这个话题采取被动的态度,要表现出对他们告诉你的事情感兴趣的迹象。)”可知,这里强调在保持沉默的同时,更要表现出你在关注对方说话。E选项However, it is more important to give signals that you are paying attention.

The air hung heavy with heat as Maya rode her bike home from school. Even in early October, the temperature had rose to 38℃ — another record-breaking day in what scientists called “the hottest year in human history.” Sweat dripped down her neck as she passed withered (枯萎的) trees lining the street, their leaves crisp and brown from months of drought.
Suddenly, a deafening crack split the sky. Dark clouds swallowed the sun, and wind whipped (抽打) trash into small tornadoes. Maya barely made it to her corridor before hailstones began pounding the roof. Through the living room window, she watched Mr. Thompson’s greenhouse break into a thousand glittering pieces.
The storm died as suddenly as it began. When Maya stepped outside, her shoes sank into ankle-deep water. The neighborhood looked like a warzone: flooded streets, uprooted bushes, and a thick layer of ice coating everything. Her phone buzzed with emergency alerts — “Extreme weather alarm!”
That evening, the power remained out. By candlelight, Maya looked through climate disaster headlines on her dying phone battery: melting glaciers, displaced polar bears, wildfires consuming ancient forests. A lump formed in her throat. She remembered her grandmother’s stories about gentle autumn rains and predictable seasons — a world that no longer existed. “Mom,” Maya whispered as they boiled water on the gas stove, “what if this keeps getting worse?” Her mother sighed, “We’re past the ‘what if’ phase, sweetheart. This is worse. But maybe not too late to make it less terrible.”
A spark was burning in Maya’s chest. She grabbed a notebook and began drafting things. On the pages, her ideas flowed like a river, unstoppable and fierce. In the end she succeeded in outlining a plan for an initiative. When her best friend Aisha video-called at dawn, Maya did not say hello. She pushed the notebook in front of the camera: “STUDENT CLIMATE ACTION PLAN” in bold letters.

Maya flipped her notebook open, eyes sparkling. “Look, Aisha,” she said eagerly. “We can start a campaign at school. First, we set up a recycling program to reduce waste. Then, we organize carpooling to cut down on emissions. And we could even plant trees in the schoolyard to absorb carbon dioxide.” Aisha’s eyes widened with excitement. “That’s amazing, Maya! Let’s do it.” They immediately started making phone calls, reaching out to classmates and teachers. They created posters and flyers, spreading the word about their plan.
Paragraph 2:
Their momentum (势头) grew like wildfire. Students from different grades joined in, each eager to contribute. The school administration provided support, allocating resources for their projects. Local media caught wind of their initiative and came to cover the story. Inspired by their efforts, other schools in the area also began their own climate action plans. Maya and Aisha watched with pride as their small idea blossomed into a large-scale movement, bringing hope for a more sustainable future in the face of the climate crisis.

Zhang Yi predicted more possibilities in applying AI technologies in emotional support and companionship robots, with target users covering all age groups, and whose functions include the ability to detect users’ potential physical and mental health issues.
24.What contributes to the growing popularity of simulated AI pets in China?
A.The lovely appearance of AI pets
B.The low cost of maintaining AI pets

But I didn't want to move at first. I hated IT so much. There were too many people, and IT was always so noisy. Worst of all, I had to leave all of my friends for almost two years. I was mad about having to live there. Three years later, I started to like the city. I realized, but I should just enjoy what I had and start thinking about what I didn't have. What really changed my mind about the city were all the new things to try. I was able to do some new activities in the city. I met so many amazing people along the way.

C.Government’s support for AI technology
D.Consumers’ demand for emotional support
25.What can we learn about “Boo Boo”?

C.It helps parents take care of newborn babies. D.Its appearance wins 100% positive feedback.
26.Zhang Yi’s prediction about AI technologies mainly focuses on ________.
A.the limitation of current AI pets B.the possible application in health issues
C.the market price of emotional support pets D.the competition among different AI companies
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.AI pets can provide emotional, support for patients.
B.Boo Boo is gaining popularity at home and abroad.
C.Simulated AI pets gain popularity among consumers.
D.AI pets have the potential to cure physical and mental diseases.
