Amy Johnson was one of the most influential and inspirational women of the twentieth century. She was the first woman to fly alone from England to Australia in 1930 and she set a series of other records throughout her career.
Amy grew up in Hull, where her father ran a fish export and import business. She worked for a law firm until, at a loose end one Sunday afternoon, she boarded a bus that took her to Stag Lane Aerodrome in North London. There, Amy was immediately attracted by the planes she watched taking off and landing. Soon she started to spend all her spare time at the airfield. During the 1920s and 1930s, aviation (飞行) was controlled by the rich and famous. However, with great effort, Amy was awarded her pilot’s license (执照) in 1929.
Unlike today’s pilots, Amy had no radio link with the ground and no dependable information about the weather, and her maps were basic. But daringly, Amy followed the most direct path-simply by placing a rule on the map, which took her over some of the world’s most dangerous places, meaning she had to fly for at least eight hours at a time.
On her Australia trip, despite a forced landing in a sandstorm in the Iraq desert, Amy reached India in a record six days. Although the bad weather took away her chance to beat Hinkler’s record, the world’s press started to pay attention and Amy became “The Lone Girl Flyer”.
Amy landed in Australia on Saturday, May 24. Over the next six weeks, she was treated like a superstar. Women asked their hairdressers for an “Amy Johnson wave”. At least ten songs were written about her, and the most famous one was Amy, Wonderful Amy performed by Jack Hylton. Fan mail poured in and such was her fame that an envelope addressed to “Amy flies in England” reached its destination.
24.What originally attracted Amy’s interest in aviation?
A.Her father’s success in the fish business.
B.Her occasional encounter with airplanes.
C.Her inborn curiosity about the sky.
D.Her trip from England to Australia.
25.What can we learn from Amy’s flying?
A.She pioneered a new airline. B.She had poor flight assistance.
C.She made a good fortune through it. D.She preferred short-distance flights.
26.What made Amy be noticed by the press?
A.Her bravery to face failure. B.Her successful landing despite difficulties.
C.Her special destination of flight. D.Her unique taste in fashion.
27.How does Amy sound in the last paragraph?
A.Popular. B.Open-minded.
C.Well-rounded. D.Independent

When we discuss our warming planet, we, however, overlook the impact of warming temperatures on our oceans. A new study published by researchers from the University of Exeter explores the link between warming temperatures and their impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone (暮光带).
The twilight zone is a region of the ocean that lies between the upper ocean and the deep ocean and is located around 200 to 1,000 meters under the surface. In the upper ocean, tiny plant-like organisms (生物) called phytoplankton turn carbon (碳) from the atmosphere into organic matter. This formation of organic matter, along with other waste matter, produces a shower of organic material. It helps start the ocean’s huge food web as organic matter and other carbon-based products go down from the surface and move through the depths of the ocean.
This process by which heat-trapping carbon is stored in deep waters instead of going into the atmosphere is an essential set of processes that control the Earth’s climate system. The ocean’s twilight zone is also home to many creatures. Twilight zone animals consume matter near the upper ocean during the night and return to the deeper waters during the day, directly moving carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean. In this way, the organisms in the twilight zone help.
Sadly, the study suggests that up to 40% of twilight zone creatures could disappear by the end of the century. This is because rising temperatures increase the rate at which organic matter is eaten and disappears. As a result, less carbon goes down into the twilight zone and beyond for storage as organic matter. Given that organisms in the twilight zone are highly dependent on going down organic matter, this could put their complex food cycles in danger.
However, the authors tell us that we have not yet reached the point that couldn’t be saved and that there is still time for us to act. Not only will this increase our ocean’s carbon cycling processes, but it will also protect beings in the deepest parts of our oceans.
32.What plays a big role in the beginning of ocean creatures’ food web?
A.The wide variety of deep-sea creatures.
B.Organisms’ activities on the ocean floor.
C.The amount of waste matter on the surface.
D.Carbon-based products dropping into the twilight zone.
33.How do twilight zone animals’ activities contribute to the Earth?
A.By warming the twilight zone. B.By releasing heat-trapping carbon.
C.By balancing the Earth’s temperature. D.By clearing waste matter out of the ocean.
34.What may be a result of rising temperatures on twilight zone creatures?
A.Smaller living spaces. B.The break of their food chain.
C.Better ability to adapt to climate. D.Increased food on the sea surface.
35.What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.Acting to protect our ocean
B.The future of twilight zone creatures
C.The disappearing ocean’s twilight zone creatures
D.Unlocking the secrets of organic matter in the ocean

A super communicator seems able to put his opinions across while also listening to others. With a bit of practice, we can also be more effective in communicating.
36 . Some of those are designed to invite you in. But some special questions, which are known as deep questions, are used to dig out more information. A deep question is when a person asks another person about his values, beliefs or experiences. 37 , but it’s easier than it sounds. In doing so, it allows him to say something meaningful about himself.
If you ask a deep question and don’t listen to the reply, then it’s almost as if you didn’t ask the question. 38 , the other person doesn’t realise that you’re listening carefully. It is equally bad. To avoid it, we can use a technique, which is called looping (使成环) for understanding. By practicing it, we truly listen and make it easier for the other one to continue the conversation.
When we’re asking deep questions, looping for understanding and showing that we’re listening can help us engage in mutual authenticity and vulnerability Let’s say, if someone approaches your family and is inauthentic, then they might present a potential risk; if they seem like a friend but they’re actually an enemy, then they can get inside your defence. So ensuring authenticity is critical in an effective conversation.
The goal of a conversation is essentially connection. 40 . If you look inside the brains of people having a conversation, you find that their neural (神经的) activity is becoming more similar, which presents communication with connection. The more our brains become entrained, the better we understand each other.
A.Whether it makes sense or not when you think about it
B.People who communicate better usually ask more questions
C.If you ask a deep question and listen to the answer carefully
D.When you’re in a conversation with someone, it is reflected in your brain
E.It sounds terrifying to say that you should ask someone a question like that
F.Connection is a visible bond, helping you understand what I’m thinking and feeling
G.Human brains have developed at picking up on certain fake information to minimize losses

I’d been looking forward to a certain kind of summer. Then something happened to make those plans go in a completely different direction.
My parents and I had spent forever researching overnight summer camps online. Finally... “This camp sounds perfect!” I told my parents. “You get to design games and animate (把……制作成动画片) characters!” “The place does look great. But I don’t see anything about computers,” said my dad. I nodded and said, “The camp is really big, and they have a lot of different camps within the camp.” “Now I see,” said my dad. “And I like the idea of you exercising that clever brain of yours.” My dad filled out the form, and five weeks later, my parents dropped me off for what I thought would be a week of nonstop computer-coding (计算机编程的) fun.
I arrived at the check-in table at exactly the same time as a girl named Willow. “Perfect timing!” a counselor (夏令营负责人) named Halley said. “You two are in my cabin (小屋)— number 7. Just follow the green signs, and you’ll see it on your right.”
“It’s so cool and woodsy here,” Willow said. “I wonder if bears ever come around.”
“You just gave me the best idea,” I said. “I think I’ll base’ my characters on bears!”
Willow laughed and said, “I might be missing something here. Who are these mysterious characters you speak of?”
“You know, the characters we’ll be designing on computers this week!” I said.
“Why would we be doing computer stuff at Nature Camp?” asked Willow.
“That’s why we signed up for Tech Camp!” I smiled.
“Oh, I think I might have bad news for you,” said Willow. “This is Nature Camp. I know that for sure because I came here last year, and the kids in Tech Camp were in totally different cabins.”
“No!” I said, “I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong form on the website!”
We raced back to the welcome table to see if I could switch over to Tech Camp, but of course it was completely full.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute.

Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t achieved your goals for the past year and are feeling disappointed. Feeling this way is completely normal. However, it’s important not to lose hope. Here are some tips that may help you set and achieve your goals.
Firstly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Failure is a valuable lesson and experience that can help you grow. Secondly, reflect on what went wrong and learn from your mistakes. Perhaps the plan was too ambitious or not practical enough. For the next one, make sure to set realistic and achievable goals, and break them down into smaller steps.
Remember, failure is not permanent. Treat this as an opportunity and try again. You’ll be better!
Yours,
Li Hua
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute. My dream of a week filled with coding and animation had vanished in an instant. Willow sat beside me, her eyes filled with sympathy. “I’m really sorry,” she said softly. “But maybe there’s something good here too. Nature Camp might not be what you expected, but it could still be fun.” I sighed, trying to shake off my disappointment. “You’re right,” I said. “I should at least give it a chance.”
Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Willow was right. As the days passed, I found myself getting lost in the beauty of the natural world around me. I went on hikes and learned about different plants and animals. And to my surprise, I discovered a new passion for outdoor activities that I had never known before. By the end of the week, I realized that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we don’t plan for. Nature Camp had given me an unexpected adventure, and I was grateful for it.

根据第二段“This formation of organic matter, along with other waste matter, produces a shower of organic material. It helps start the ocean’s huge food web as organic matter and other carbon-based products go down from the surface and move through the depths of the ocean.(这种有机物质的形成,连同其他废物,产生了大量的有机物质。当有机物质和其他碳基产品从海洋表面向下移动并穿过海洋深处时,它有助于启动海洋巨大的食物网)”可知,大量的含碳的有机物质的形成及下沉有助于启动海洋复杂的食物网。故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“This process by which heat-trapping carbon is stored in deep waters instead of going into the atmosphere is an essential set of processes that control the Earth’s climate system. The ocean’s twilight zone is also home to many creatures. Twilight zone animals consume matter near the upper ocean during the night and return to the deeper waters during the day, directly moving carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean. In this way, the organisms in the twilight zone help.(捕获热量的碳储存在深水中而不是进入大气的过程是控制地球气候系统的一套基本过程。海洋的暮光带也是许多生物的家园。暮光带的动物在夜间消耗上层海洋附近的物质,在白天返回较深的水域,直接将碳从海洋表面转移到深海。在这种情况下,处于暮光带的生物就能提供帮助)”可知,暮光带的生物能将碳转移到深海里,平衡全球气温。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“This is because rising temperatures increase the rate at which organic matter is eaten and disappears. As a result, less carbon goes down into the twilight zone and beyond for storage as organic matter. Given that organisms in the twilight zone are highly dependent on going down organic matter, this could put their complex food cycles in danger.(这是因为不断上升的温度加快了有机物被吃掉和消失的速度。其结果是,更少的碳进入暮光带,并以有机物质的形式储存。考虑到生活在过渡带的生物高度依赖于有机物,这可能会使它们复杂的食物循环处于危险之中)”可推知,气温上升可能会导致越来越少的含碳有机物下沉到深海,进一步导致海洋食物链受到影响。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“When we discuss our warming planet, we, however, overlook the impact of warming temperatures on our oceans. A new study published by researchers from the University of Exeter explores the link between warming temperatures and their impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone

Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t achieved your goals for the past year and are feeling disappointed.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Willow was right.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
①消失:vanish/disappear
②摆脱:shake off/get rid of
③发现:discover/spot
①惊讶:surprise/astonishment
②感激:grateful/thankful

[高分句型2] And to my surprise, I discovered a new passion for outdoor activities that I had never known before.
