There’s a small children’s recreation area there as well, and on Saturdays, we hold a morning story-reading for young kids. The third floor has history, maps, newspapers, journals, and arts and humanities books. We have computers with Internet access on the fourth floor. The computers are free to use, but there’s a two-hour limit. It’s first-come, first-served. Just put your name down on the list if you want to use one. From sleeping in a spider-covered tent a mile up an Amazonian cliff face to completing one of the classic outdoor “lifetime” challenges in the space of a few months, Anna Taylor is making a name for herself in the adventure community. Still just 24, the climber is also a great advocate of British expeditions.
“The UK is actually really good for these things.” says Taylor, who in 2021 became the first woman to complete a self-powered round of the 83 routes that feature in the celebrated climbing book Classic Rock. “It can be underestimated compared to exotic (异国风情的) places, but if you get creative, it’s as good as anywhere.” she says.
“The Classic Rock challenge is the kind of thing people try to finish during their lives, a bit like walking the Wainwrights, but I doubted the capability to make it in summer. It was amazing and opened my eyes to UK climbing. I didn’t realize how challenging cycle touring would be with so much equipment. But it’s a great way to appreciate the landscape, and completing a long ride is as satisfying as getting to the top of a route. “Taylor explored a huge amount of the country in the process. She then completed another self-powered round, climbing the 100 routes detailed in the guide Mountain Rock. “It is really a physical challenge,” Taylor says.
Having come to the attention of one of the UK’s top adventurers, Leo Houlding. Taylor also went on a trip to the Guyanese Amazon to scale the giant Mount Roraima. “We were in the jungle for a month,” she recalls. “That was incredible and pretty scary sleeping there at first, especially with huge spiders walking across your tent!” Taylor thrives on the physical and mental challenges of climbing. “It’s all about keeping your head under control,” she explains. “You practice with a safety rope, and then it’s about making the commitment of doing it without one.”

When we sleep, our brain is still actively processing the day’s experiences and integrating them with past memories. Previous studies have identified links between pupil (瞳孔) size and sleep state, as well as between sleep state and memory formation. However, it has been unclear how fresh memories are processed without blurring into old ones. For example, how do we learn to play the piano without forgetting how to ride a bike?
Researchers at Cornell University addressed this question by attaching brain-scanning electrodes and tiny eye-tracking cameras to mice. They monitored the mice as they learned new tasks during the day, such as navigating a maze, and then observed them during sleep. (Fun fact: mice can sleep with their eyes open.)
The study revealed two distinct substages during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, a critical period for memory formation. One substage replayed new memories, coinciding with narrowed pupils. The other involved recalling older memories, marked by widened pupils. These stages alternated rapidly. The team also discovered that during the narrowed pupil stages, blocking sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) limited the mice’s ability to remember new information.
It is also found that the brain has an intermediate (中间的) period that separates new learning from old knowledge. The results suggest that the brain can multitask distinct cognitive processes during sleep to facilitate continuous learning without interference. It’s like new learning, old knowledge, new learning, old knowledge, shifting slowly throughout sleep.
The implications of the study are far-reaching: such a non-invasive means of monitoring brain function may help treat memory issues and boost memory, for example. The study also supports the hypothesis (假说) that human brains and computer systems may significantly forget old information. Catastrophic forgetting, known in AI, is an area where machines still lag behind biology. What’s more, the findings provide a potential solution for preventing catastrophic interference while enabling memory integration in both biological and artificial neural networks.
Despite the many similarities between human and mouse brains, similar studies need to be conducted in humans to verify these results.
28.What do researchers at Cornell University focus on?
A.How pupil size is related to sleep state.
B.How people learn to perform new tasks.
C.How memories are kept without interference.
D.How sleep state is connected with memory formation.
29.What is the finding of the study?
A.Blocking SWRs removes old memories.
B.The brain processes new memories first.
C.Widened pupil is associated with replaying new memories.
D.A transitional stage distinguishes old memories from new ones.
30.What is the implication of the study?
A.It provides an invasive solution to memory study.
B.It helps avoid large-scale interference and integrate memory.
C.It denies that brains and computers may forget information dramatically.
D.It supports that machines perform better in catastrophic forgetting than brains.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Code of Memory Integration in Sleep. B.Role of Sleep in Memory and Learning.
C.Pupil Size: A Window into Human Brain. D.A Breakthrough: How Mice Sleep with Eyes Open.

D
In today’s information-saturated world, where we’re constantly bombarded with various opinions, data, and news from every corner of the internet and media, the ability to think critically has become more crucial than ever. It can take time to practice critical thinking, but it’s never too late to start. For any individual aiming to better understand the world around you, the skills of critical thinking are indispensable.
Critical thinkers start by asking questions about whatever is in front of them. They consider cause and effect. If this, then what? If that, then how is the outcome different? They understand that every action has a consequence, and they think about all possible outcomes of decisions before they make them.
Once you have asked every question you can come up with about a matter, seek information that will help you answer those questions. Investigate! Do some research. You can learn almost anything on the Internet, but it’s not the only place to do your research. Interview people. Ask the experts around you. Gather information and various opinions you can use to make your own determination. The wider the variety, the better.
You’ve got a pile of information, and now it’s time to analyze it all with an open mind. This is the most challenging part, in my opinion. Try to be as aware as possible of prejudices (偏见) and turn them off. Question everything during this step. Are you being objective? Are you making guesses? Assuming anything? This is the time to look at every thought as purely as possible. Do you know it to be absolutely true? What are the facts? Have you considered the situation from every different point of view?
Critical thinkers are more interested in solutions than in placing blame, complaining, or gossiping. Once you’ve reached a conclusion through critical thinking, it’s time to communicate and carry out a solution if one is called for. Not everyone involved will have thought the situation through as critically as you have. It’s your job to understand that, and to present solutions in a way that everyone can understand.
32.What do critical thinkers mean by asking questions?
A.Being curious about everything.
B.Staying critical to the truth.
C.Keeping an open mind.
D.Stopping blaming others.
33.What makes analyzing information the most difficult part according to the author?
A.Experiences. B.Mistakes.
C.Prejudices. D.Researches.
34.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Blames and complaints.
B.Reaching a decision.
C.Productive thinking.
D.Communicating answers.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To criticize people who lack critical thinking skills.
B.To explain the importance of critical thinking in daily life.
C.To provide a step-by-step guide to practicing critical thinking.
D.To compare different methods of critical thinking.
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.D 35.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章向读者介绍批判性思维的重要性以及如何进行批判性思维,为读者提供了一个循序渐进的批判性思维实践指南。

They understand that every action has a consequence, and they think about all possible outcomes of decisions before they make them. 故选A。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段“This is the most challenging part, in my opinion. Try to be as aware as possible of prejudices (偏见) and turn them off.(我认为这是最具挑战性的部分。尽可能地意识到偏见,然后消除它们)”可知,偏见使分析信息成为最困难的部分。故选C。
34.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Once you’ve reached a conclusion through critical thinking, it’s time to communicate and carry out a solution if one is called for.(一旦你通过批判性思维得出了结论,如果需要的话,就是时候沟通和执行解决方案了)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是对得出的结论进行沟通。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据第二段“Critical thinkers start by asking questions about whatever is in front of them.(批判性思考者从对他们面前的任何事情提出问题开始)”,第三段“Once you have asked every question you can come up with about a matter, seek information that will help you answer those questions.(一旦你提出了所有你能想到的问题,就寻找信息来帮助你回答这些问题)”,第四段“You’ve got a pile of information, and now it’s time to analyze it all with an open mind.(你得到了一大堆信息,现在是时候以开放的心态来分析所有这些信息了)”以及最后一段“Once you’ve reached a conclusion through critical thinking, it’s time to communicate and carry out a solution if one is called for.(一旦你通过批判性思维得出了结论,如果需要的话,就是时候沟通和执行解决方案了)”可知,文章主要讲述了批判性思维的重要性以及如何进行批判性思维。由此推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是提供一个循序渐进的批判性思维实践指南。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Like many other teenagers, I suffered from growing pains. As I entered the last year of my high school, I had enough of my parents’ complaints about my academic performances. It seemed that the grades overshadowed all my positive qualities. Therefore, I lost my temper and argued with them every now and then, only to feel more upset.
One day, in a history class, I saw birds flying and singing outside the window, and my mind began to wander like a cloud. “If I were a bird, I would have nothing to worry about,” I thought to myself. It suddenly dawned on me that the world outside was waiting to be explored. Without hesitation, after class, I left a note on the desk that read, “The world is so big that I want to have a look.”
Making sure that I carried adequate change, I boarded the bus. Freeing myself from the thick books, I even found breathing was an enjoyment. The bus was bound for rural areas, where peaceful landscapes would definitely heal my growing pains. Soon, I reached the terminal station. The beautiful countryside surrounded with a winding lake and humble cottages was a perfect getaway. Walking alongside the lake gave me a sense of inner peace, allowing me to temporarily forget the upcoming examinations.
However, the relaxation was only temporary. With the night approaching, I began to fear the darkness. I could hardly see my hands in front of me and rushed to the bus stop in panic. Unfortunately, I missed the last bus. The light of a cottage caught my attention, and I saw it as a chance to seek help.

After figuring out the details, he decided to drive me home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Upon hearing me knocking at the door, the owner let me in. He took the initiative to ask what happened. “I’m Carl, a senior high school student. I just lost my way here,” I responded. Afterwards, he unwrapped a piece of bread for me, who must have sensed that I was starving. “So why do you visit a remote place?” he continued. I struggled with two inner voices, one urging me to tell him, while the other stopping me from telling the truth. Unable to resist my desire to grumble, I admitted it was the pressure from my parents that I could barely tolerate.
After figuring out the details, he decided to drive me home. I stood still, unwilling to board the car. “I’m sure your parents give a priority to your safety rather than your marks. Follow me,” he said. After taking my seat in the car, it occurred to me that this event may ruin the relationship between my parents and me. Catching sight of my worry, he pointed out communication was the best solution. I nodded slightly and extended my thanks to him. “Maybe it’s high time that I should have a chat with my parents,” I thought to myself.

24.What has made Taylor famous in the adventure community?
A.Her young age as a climber.
B.Her unique experience in the Amazon,
C.Her completion of challenging outdoor tasks.
D.Her advocacy of adventurous trips.
25.What does Taylor think of the UK for climbing?
A.It is judged wrongly compared to exotic places.
B.It is as good as anywhere if one is imaginary.
C.It lacks the variety of routes like other places.
D.It is only suitable for self-powered rounds.
26.What do we know about Taylor in the Classic Rock challenge?
A.She considered getting to the top more satisfying.
B.She carried loads of facilities in the challenge.
C.She recommended completing the challenge in summer.
D.She explored more countries during the challenge.
27.Which of the following best describes Taylor according to the passage?
A.Proud and competitive. B.Reserved and cautious.
C.Humorous and responsible. D.Adventurous and passionate.

第二节 (满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing me knocking at the door, the owner let me in. He took the initiative to ask what happened. “I’m Carl, a senior high school student. I just lost my way here,” I responded. Afterwards, he unwrapped a piece of bread for me, who must have sensed that I was starving. “So why do you visit a remote place?” he continued. I struggled with two inner voices, one urging me to tell him, while the other stopping me from telling the truth. Unable to resist my desire to grumble, I admitted it was the pressure from my parents that I could barely tolerate.
Paragraph 2:
After figuring out the details, he decided to drive me home. I stood still, unwilling to board the car. “I’m sure your parents give a priority to your safety rather than your marks. Follow me,” he said. After taking my seat in the car, it occurred to me that this event may ruin the relationship between my parents and me. Catching sight of my worry, he pointed out communication was the best solution. I nodded slightly and extended my thanks to him. “Maybe it’s high time that I should have a chat with my parents,” I thought to myself.
