Recently, my husband and three kids were playing in the Mediterranean, swimming and floating in the picture-perfect sea. It was extremely beautiful in Majorca, Spain. The way the sun danced across the water and how the blue horizon was dotted with storybook sailboats were such beautiful scenes. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes.
My husband and I always dreamed about taking our kids on a trip around the world. It was something we always wanted to do “one day”. It was one of the things we talked at length about, when we imagined our life with the children we hoped we would have.
Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans.
We spent dozens of hours discussing, researching and planning. We had to learn how to “road school” our kids and arrange time off from work. We renewed our passports, and then packed our bags. We showed our kids the world. It was about experiencing the dozens of flights and trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, how diverse, and how amazing the world is. We wanted them to learn all that we had learned ourselves, through our own travels as young adults.
But there was something more than that: What we really wanted is to slow down time. We wanted the days to last a bit longer, and the weeks to take their time. The years with our children are going too fast. We wanted to put the brakes on (阻止) our busy lives for a year, and just be with our kids. We wanted a break from the daily morning routine of making lunches, eating breakfast and rushing out of the door in time for school. We needed a family time-out.
It was a wonderful two-month trip in Europe, full of incredible moments. And when we look back at our lives, I know we’ll be glad we did it. I know we’ll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family.
4. What was the author’s attitude toward the trip when planning it?
A. Worried. B. Calm. C. Stressed. D. Eager.
5. What does the underlined part “make good on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Change. B. Realize. C. Improve. D. Cancel.
6. What was the author’s main purpose of taking this trip?
A. To teach her children to value life.
B. To allow her children to see the world.
C. To enjoy a family breakaway from their life routine.
D. To enable her children to learn something out of class.
7. How did the author feel about their two-month stay in Europe?
A. Tired. B. Satisfied. C. Inspired. D. Disappointed.
C
College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. It calls into question how and why we teach writing at all. If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in school?
In fact, learning to write goes beyond just mastering grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. It involves much more. For one thing, it’s about learning to turn a loose set of thoughts into a clear line of reasoning — a skill that is useful for everyone, not just those who enjoy writing or need to do a lot of it for work.
Learning to write also trains your imagination to construct the person who will read your words. It puts you in relation to someone you may not know, someone who may even not exist. When you learn to write, you learn to meet their needs in an unfamiliar context. Even ordinary assignments teach students to predict what another person knows and expects.
Writing is never simply self-expression. It’s expression to a specific audience for a specific purpose. In some cases, like a love letter, a writer knows their audience very well. In others, the audience is every bit a work of the imagination as a novel’s characters are. Writers, then, should give up trying to address the public at large, but should imagine that a friend, though not the closest friend, is listening to our talk.
When this act of imagination is done well, a reader can feel deeply understood, as if a stranger has told them some previously unknown truth about themselves. That’s how I felt reading “Difference Maker” — an essay about parenthood. While our situations were unique, naming the problem provided a deeper understanding.
It seems unavoidable that large-language models of AI will allow us to offload some of the writing tasks that students learn in school. But we can’t allow ourselves to lose the capacity to empathize (共情) with distant strangers at just the moment when we’re more able than ever to communicate with them.
8. What is teachers’ concern about ChatGPT?
A. It’s a challenge to apply it to teaching. B. It’s hard to grade a paper written by it.
C. It limits students’ imagination and creativity. D. It questions the necessity of teaching writing.
9. What does the author think of learning to write?
A. It helps with logical thinking. B. It is a basic skill for everyone.
C. It focuses on correct expression. D. It is closely related to social skills.
10. What makes writing effective according to the text?
A. Expressing oneself. B. Targeting intended readers.
C. Conveying imaginative ideas. D. Creating attractive characters.
11. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. What AI Can’t Teach the Writing Students B. ChatGPT Writing VS Traditional Writing
C. Never Lose the Capacity for Empathy D. What Is the Future for AI Writing

In September, when UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visited Zhoukoudian in suburban Beijing, which is famous for the discovery of Peking Man living between 700,000 to 200,000 years ago, she was full of praise for the structure that successfully protected Yuanrendong Cave from an unusual rainstorm in July.
The cave in the central area of the site has so far revealed the remains of 40 individuals. The structure protects the site from the weather, including heavy wind, snow and hail, and its design fits in with the surrounding environment, Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, said at the 2nd World Cultural and Natural Heritage Forum in Beijing on Nov. 17 and 18. “It provides a reference for the protection of precious cultural relics, and suggests measures for helping heritage sites respond to the influence of climate change.”
Organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the Auspices of UNESCO(Beijing), and the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation among others, the forum brought together some 50 professionals to discuss the protection and sustainable (可持续发展的) development of heritage sites. Scholars stressed the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and offered suggestions for how to solve the problem.
“Entering the 21st century, climate change has been the subject of in-depth discussion by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Questions like how to balance between humans and nature, how to respond to natural disasters caused by climate change, and what new challenges this brings to World Heritage Sites, are worth consideration,” says Qin. “Solving the problem requires us to unify, making full use of advanced technology, such as space and digital technologies, and jointly developing risk prevention and response plans,” he adds.
12. Why was China praised for the structure in Zhoukoudian?
A. It attracts an increasing number of visitors.
B. It matches the surrounding buildings in design.
C. It is well preserved from destructive human activities.
D. It sets a good example to cultural heritage protection.
13. What topic is covered in the Beijing forum?
A. The effects of climate change on heritage sites. B. The preservation of the original structure.
C. The unsuitable response to disasters. D. The unacceptable human behaviours.
14. According to Qin, what can be done to deal with the problem?
A. Strengthening international cooperation. B. Hosting more in-depth discussion forums.
C. Making plans for risk prevention individually. D. Turning attention to developing space technology.
15. What is the main concern of the author?
A. The loss of balance between humans and nature.
B. The lack of measures taken to preserve heritage.
C The growing weather threat that Heritage sites face.
D. The worsening relation between climate change and humans.

Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain so rt of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain so rt of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

10. What makes writing effective according to the text?
A. Expressing oneself. B. Targeting intended readers.
C. Conveying imaginative ideas. D. Creating attractive characters.
11. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. What AI Can’t Teach the Writing Students B. ChatGPT Writing VS Traditional Writing
C. Never Lose the Capacity for Empathy D. What Is the Future for AI Writing

【答案】One possible version:
Recently our school held an activity called “Green Transport to School”, which calls on students to ride bicycles to school. I have made a survey on our classmates' attitudes towards this activity.
70% of our classmates support it for two reasons. One reason is that riding a bicycle can be energy-saving and is good for our health. The other reason is that cars lead to air pollution and traffic jams. However, others think if the school is far away from home, riding to school is not only unsafe but also a waste of time.
In my opinion, riding to school will be a very good choice if you're not in a hurry and if the weather is fine.

【答案】Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jessy, waiting for an explanation. A flush of embarrassment came to her cheeks, making Jessy biting her lips. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then came Miss Bella’s voice, “Why is Lee’s watch on your wrist?” Jessy hesitated for a while and decided to tell the truth. However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. “Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain?” She made a request in a tone of begging.
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy’s speech first. Jessy put away her fright, took a deep breath, and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming...” Word began to flood out of her. “What a terrific speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. She returned the watch to Lee as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.
