B Florence Nightingale is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Born into a wealthy upper-class British family, Nightingale was provided with a comprehensive education that included mathematics and languages. However, despite her family’s expectations that she would focus on traditional female pursuits like marriage and motherhood, Nightingale felt drawn to a career in nursing from a young age. Nightingale was deeply moved by the pains of the sick and injured, particularly during the Crimean War (1853-1856). At a time when nursing was not considered a respectable profession for women of her class, she decided to pursue her calling. She faced significant opposition from her family, who believed that nursing was under her social status, but she persevered. In 1854, Nightingale and a team of 38 nurses traveled to the Crimean War front, where conditions in the military hospitals were awful. She immediately set about improving hygiene and sanitation, organizing nursing care, and calling for better treatment of the wounded soldiers. Her tireless efforts and compassionate nursing earned her the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp”, as she was often seen making rounds at night, carrying a lamp to check on the soldiers. Her work significantly reduced the death rate among the wounded soldiers and brought much-needed attention to the terrible conditions of military hospitals. Her actions led to reforms in military healthcare and established the importance of proper nursing care in the treatment of the sick and injured. After the war Nightingale returned to England as a national hero. She used her newfound fame to continue calling for improved healthcare and nursing standards. She published several influential works, including “Notes on Nursing” and “Notes on Hospitals”, which became seminal texts in the field of nursing. In summary, Florence Nightingale’ s life is a testament to the power of determination, compassion, and the ability to effect meaningful change. Her legacy continues to inspire and guide the nursing profession and healthcare reform to this day. 4. Why were Nightingale’s family against her dream of being a nurse? A. They thought the pay of nurses was too low. B. They thought getting married was better for women. C. They thought the work couldn’t match their social status. D. They thought the working environment for nurses was terrible. 5. What did Nightingale do at the Crimean War front? A. She wrote several influential works. B. She treated many wounded soldiers. C. She called for better treatment for common people. D. She improved the conditions in the military hospitals. 6. How did Nightingale use her fame? A. To sell more books. B. To draw attention to healthcare and nursing. C. To prove to her family that her choice was right. D. To attract more women to pursue the nursing career. 7. Which words can best describe Nightingale? A. Responsible and devoted. B. Stubborn but intelligent. C. Wealthy and professional. D. Unfortunate but inspiring. C Since the AI chatbot ChatGPT was released in 2020, we’ve been hearing about the threat posed by artificial intelligence. A statement signed by academic experts and tech industry figures even branded AI an “extinction risk.” In education, there have been concerns that ChatGPT could negatively affect the learning process of students. For example, students could ask ChatGPT to write their coursework for them, skipping the research and writing effort that leads to a better understanding of the topic in question. Perhaps a better approach would be to change and enhance how we teach and assess the outcomes of learning. Making education more focused on practical skills and the use of knowledge in problem solving could ensure a deeper understanding on the part of students. AI could be used for guidance, in much the same way we currently use calculators, to help enrich people’s knowledge. However, risks do exist. In May 2023, for example, a US lawyer admitted using ChatGPT for case research. The lawyer’s filing was found to reference legal cases that didn’t exist. The chatbot had made them up. It’s not the first time that these “AI hallucinations” have been reported. Then we have the very real risk that AI could be used for illegal purposes such as identity theft. For example, criminals could use AI to clone someone’s voice. They could then phone family members and try to convince them to give out sensitive information that could be helpful for accessing bank accounts. A variant of AI-driven identity theft is the use of deepfake videos. However, Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, sounds less worried than some other executives in Silicon Valley about the risks of artificial intelligence. In a blog post on Tuesday, he wrote, “This is not the first time a major innovation has introduced new threats that had to be controlled. We’ve done it before.” 8. What is a consequence of students’ using ChatGPT? A. Reduced learning time. B. Improved academic performance. C. A lack of learning process. D. Health issues. 9. What might be an example of AI hallucinations? A. Reproducing real events. B. Recommending irrelevant information. C. Providing incorrect recommendations. D. Generating non-existent legal cases. 10 What’s paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Identity theft through AI techniques. B. Cloning someone’s voice using AI. C. The potential dangers of AI for illegal purposes. D. Deepfake videos as a form of AI-driven identity theft. 11. What attitude does Bill Gates have to the side effects of AI? A. He doesn’t care about them. B. He thinks them controllable. C. He takes them very seriously. D. He doubts their occurrence. D For future humans to survive long periods on Mars, growing food on the planet is a must. It would be too costly and risky to rely upon rocket deliveries to meet the food needs of colonists. With this in mind, scientists are exploring ways to improve space farming. At Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands, researchers work in a controlled greenhouse. They have identified a way that could improve crop production in factitious Martian soil, with different crops grown together. The method is called “intercropping”, first invented by ancient Maya farmers in what is now Central America. In their experiments, the researchers grew cherry tomatoes, peas and carrots together in small, round containers. Tomatoes grown in this way produced about double the amount of tomatoes grown alone in the same Martian soil. The tomatoes were also bigger. They flowered and matured earlier, gave more fruit per plant and had thicker stems (茎). The quantity of peas and carrots did not increase with intercropping. The crops were grown in Martian regolith, a soil with no organic matter. Created by researchers from the American space agency NASA, it is a near-perfect physical and chemical match to real Martian soil. For now, human bases on Mars are only seen in movies. But NASA, for example, is developing ways to send people to Mars in the 2030s. Intercropping involves growing plants with properties that could help each other grow. The method makes the best use of resources including water and nutrients. The researchers said the tomato plants in intercropping may have benefited from being close to the pea plants. That is because the peas are good at turning nitrogen (氮) from the air, with the help of bacteria introduced into the soil, into an important nutrient. The carrots produced fewer crops from intercropping and the peas had no change. This was probably due to lack of light. Overall, the tomatoes, peas and carrots grew well, though not as well as in Earth soil in the same greenhouse. 12. What does the underlined word “factitious” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Man-made. B. Long-standing. C. Well-known. D. Hard-won. 13. Why may tomatoes grow well among the three plants? A. Because of the role of peas plants in intercropping. B. Because of the soil rich in organic components. C. Because of their adaptation to the environment. D. Because of their little need for sunlight. 14. What is the author’s attitude towards the results of this experiment? A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Reserved. D. Optimistic. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Does Life Exist on Mars? B. The Upcoming Journey to Mars C. New Ways Are Explored to Improve Space Agriculture on Mars D. Intercropping: a Traditional Agricultural Cropping Pattern 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Managing Conflict with Humour Humour is a powerful tool. After the war, Nightingale returned to England as a national hero. A. 10. What’s paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Identity theft through AI techniques. B Cloning someone’s voice using AI. 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. Overall the tomatoes, peas and carrots grew well, though not as well as in Earth soil in the same greenhouse. Intercropping: a Traditional Agricultural Cropping Pattern 【答案】12. A 13.
