Akira Toriyama, one of Japan’s leading comics authors, whose manga (漫画) “Dragon Ball” achieved worldwide success with its mix of comedic characters and electrifying martial arts battles, died on March 1. Mr. Toriyama’s body of work, which also includes “Dr. Slump” and “Sand Land,” has influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists.
His best-known work, “Dragon Ball,” follows a young boy named Son Goku who embarks on a journey to collect the seven magical balls that summon a wish-granting dragon. Since its creation in. the 1980s, it has sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga.
Throughout his career, Mr. Toriyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, he did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, he suggested, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying educational messages.” “The role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a work of entertainment through and through.”
When “Dragon Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit. “Dragon Ball” was serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump until 1995. In the year after the series ended, the magazine lost about one million of its six million readers.
As a productive manga artist, Mr. Toriyama did not necessarily have an appetite for the genre as a reader. “I have always had a hard time reading manga, including my own work,” he said in a 2018 interview. He led a private life and gave few interviews. In a 2013 interview with the Japanese singer and actress Shoko Nakagawa, he said that he did not even share all his work with his family.

People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in those eating them on their daily diet.
Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was needed to prove the link, “While this is an interesting link, we need further research to make sure if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other sides of people’s lifestyle .”
The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts, the less likely they were to die during the study. People eating nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts. Lead researcher Dr. Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “The most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29%in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction-11%- in the danger of dying from cancer.”
They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇). and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性). Nuts contain unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪), protein(蛋白质) and several kinds of vitamins and minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.
Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This study shows close connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart disease.” Choosing plain, unsalted foods rather than sweet, salted, or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down.

Have you ever noticed how the email icon (图标) on many computers and smartphones is of an envelope? Or how camera phones make the sound of a real camera clicking when you take a photo, even though there’s no shutter to open or close? These are examples of skeuomorphs, which are when new things take on the appearance or sound of the object they’ve replaced.
Why would new things want to look like something old? It’s all to do with human psychology. Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is through affordances — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it made using a computer or smartphone easier.
However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. Indeed, the younger generation don’t need visual references to older items they’ve never used. This led to something called flat design, where computer desktops and smartphone home screens started to do away with skeuomorphism.
Skeuomorphs made a comeback, though, with smart watches. Many smart watches took on the appearance of an old fashioned watch, with a clock face. This was to encourage people who didn’t like digital watches to consider buying a smart watch.
While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn’t mean it’s only a modern phenomenon. In fact, the word was first used in 1899 by the archaeologist Henry Colley March, who realized that some ancient artefacts (人工制品) kept the appearance of older objects, even though there was no practical reason for them to do so. When ancient Greek builders moved from using wood to stone, they recreated some of the characteristics of wooden buildings. From ancient Greek architecture to 21st century technology, skeuomorphs have been a key feature of scientific progress. So, when you wonder about the objects of the future, take a look around. Chances are that they will look a lot like the objects of the past.
12. Which of the following is an example of skeuomorphs?
A. B. C. D.
13. How would people feel about skeuomorphs?
A. User-friendly. B. Safety-centered. C. Energy-saving. D. Cost-effective.
14. Why did some designers think skeuomorphs unnecessary?
A. Users became accustomed to technology. B. These products were expensive to design.
C. Young people rejected traditional designs. D. The existing standards had been updated.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The prediction about future objects. B. The key feature of scientific progress.
C. The design philosophies of skeuomorphism. D. The ever-lasting presence of skeuomorphs.

How to Stop Being a People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I’ve become a happier person as a result. Here are some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to stop being a people pleaser. Who are the people that you feel the need to please? ____16____ Answering these questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear disappointing others. ____17____ If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy trying to control how people feel about you. The best thing you can do is let them feel their feelings. It will feel liberating to free yourself from being responsible for someone else's reaction.
____18____ Saying “no” is a good way to set better boundaries in your important relationships. All healthy relationships have their own boundaries. If you haven’t set boundaries in your relationships, the odds are that at some point you will end up feeling pressured to do something you don’t want to do.
Accept yourself. Many people pleasers are insecure about who they are. ____19____ Check out our summary of Brené Brown’s the Gifts of Imperfection to learn how to accept your imperfections and love yourself.
Remember that you cannot please everyone. No matter what you do there will always be someone who is unhappy with your choices. ____20____
A. Set healthy boundaries.
B. Keep healthy relationships.
C. Why do you feel the need to keep them happy?
D. Spend some time learning to love yourself for who you are.
E. And why bother trying to please everyone if it isn’t possible?

My Best Examination
One day while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
It occurred to me at once that here was my chance.

“To tell you the truth, no one in my family has ever seen ‘Dragon Ball,’” he said, laughing. “I am also a hikikomori,” he added, using the Japanese word for a loner.

Skeuomorphs made a comeback though, with smart watches.
C 13. A 14. A 15. D

根据第一段中“These are examples of skeuomorphs, which is when new things take on the appearance or sound of the object they’ve replaced. (这些都是拟物化设计的例子,也就是新事物呈现出被它们取代的物体的外观或声音)”可知,拟物化设计是指让新事物的外观或声音与被取代的旧事物相同。比较选项中的图标可知,C项的图标呈现的是过去常用的手电筒的外观,属于拟物化设计。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is through affordances — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it made using a computer or smartphone easier. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. (然而,随着人们对现代科技的熟悉,一些设计师认为拟物化设计不再是必要的)”可知,一些设计师认为没有必要使用拟物化设计是因为用户已经习惯了科技。故选A项。
根据最后一段“While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn’t mean it’s only a modern phenomenon.

Dear Alex,
Confronted with the new type of test called “continuation writing”, so bewildered do I feel that I am writing in no time to request your professional and practical guidance, as you are exceptionally experienced in essay writing.
For one thing, I feel it rather demanding to analyze the reading text accurately, let alone complete an impressive composition in such a limited time during an examination. For another, a shortage of vivid expressions to describe actions, feelings and surroundings undoubtedly becomes an enormous obstacle for me. Therefore, I’m in dire need of your assistance and advice.
I’d appreciate it if you could burden yourself with my trouble and lend me a helping hand. Hopefully, blessed with your expert guidance, I could make more progress. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. Never did I receive an order with more delight. I knew I could sweep, for my parents thoroughly taught me how to do that when I was young. I swept the room three times. Then I got a dusting-cloth and I dusted it four times. All the woodwork around the walls, every bench, table and desk, I went over four times with my dusting-cloth, I had the feeling that in a large measure my future depended upon the impression I made upon the teacher in the cleaning of that room. When I was through, I reported to her.
The head teacher went into the room and inspected the floor and closets. Then she took her handkerchief and rubbed it on the woodwork about the walls, and over the table and benches. When she was unable to find one bit of dirt on the floor, or a particle of dust on any of the furniture, she quietly remarked, “I guess you will do to enter this institution.” I was one of the happiest souls on earth. The sweeping of that room was my college examination! I have passed several examinations since then, but I have always felt that this was the best one I had ever passed.
