The skin is the body’s largest organ. Look at it under a microscope, and you will see thousands of nerve endings that help keep the brain connected to the outside world through touch, pressure, and pain. But Zhenan Bao sees something more.
For Bao, a Stanford chemical engineer focusing on polymers (聚合物), the skin is not only a sensory organ but also a flexible, stretchable, and self-healing material. Bao works in an emerging field that aims to develop electronic skin, or e-skin, to recreate some functions of the human skin for use in artificial limbs (肢) as well as robotics. For people who wear artificial limbs, a sense of touch would improve their quality of life immeasurably.
“Our current electronics are easily broken and difficult to bend or move. But if we can make them all like skin, it can potentially change how humans interact and connect with electronics,” Bao says. Bao sees possible applications for e-skin in wearable devices. “There is a lot of interest in wearable devices that go beyond just measuring how many steps we walk each day, or the heart rate,” she adds.
The key to such delicate applications is that the electronics must be stretchable. That’s where polymers come in. A polymer is a large molecule (分子) made up of smaller molecules that are linked together like a chain. By changing the structure of the molecules, Bao and her team came up with a new flexible material that was perfect for the job.
At Stanford, Bao and her colleagues worked on polymers for displays that can stretch and fold. After more than three years of work, they published a proof-of-principle study in the journal Nature for a super-stretchy polymer. The material can be eventually used for body-worn electronics that measure and display vital signs. Bao is driven by the idea of developing electronics that could benefit medical diagnosis and health care. But she thinks the road to commercialization is long.
4 Which is one of the goals of developing e-skin?
A. To touch robots. B. To replace artificial limbs.
C. To aid some disabled individuals. D. To improve humans’ sensory organs.
5. What does Bao expect of e-skin compared to current electronics?
A. It will be less convenient to wear. B. It will be more durable and flexible.
C. It will be less interactive with humans. D. It will be more bendable and breakable.
6. What can we learn about the super-stretchy polymer from the text?
A. It lacks proof of principle. B. It can forecast the body’s vital signs.
C. It has been commercialized and sells well. D. It is in the research and development stage.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Electronics: Becoming the Focus of Engineers
B. E-skin: Transforming Human-Tech Interaction
C. A Polymer: Acting as a Perfect Chemical Material
D. Applications: Changing the Structure of the Molecules

The cliche (陈词滥调) of a knitter is a white-haired lady. But in the 1940s, young male Royal Air Force pilots used needles as they waited for their next mission. Wartime pilots crashed a lot and“lap crafts” like knitting, helped rebuild flexibility in wounded limbs while also helping to settle wounded minds. They were the foundation of early occupational therapy (治疗).
Today, millions of people around the world employ these same techniques. “They are closely associated with our mental health,” says Janine Smith, the owner of a store that sells supplies for knitting and crocheting (用钩针编制). “I know that if I haven’t knitted for a few days, I really miss it. It’s like meditation.”
Physiotherapist Betsan Corkhill and occupational therapist Jill Riley were part of a team from Cardiff University that, ten years ago, surveyed more than 3,500 knitters and found that the more frequently people knitted, the calmer and happier they felt.
In reality, it is a “Flow”, which is a concept first named by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi as he wrote in his book, “The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times. The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”
Shauna Richardson knows just how true this is. The artist spent 18 months in a state of flow when she crocheted three seven-metre-long lions for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. To complete the task, which required nearly 38 miles of wool, she says she had to “zone everything out and sustain a state of mind driven by rhythm and process.”
But smaller projects will also get you there. Even a simple knitting or crochet pattern requires attentiveness to ensure that each stitch is made correctly. And if there’s not enough challenge in the straightforward, you can make additions, from colour changes to textured stitches to highly complicated patterns.
The Cardiff research team found that even though most of the people surveyed were employed, three-quarters of those who knitted three or more times a week felt significantly more able to organise their thoughts and forget their problems.
8. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To explore early occupational therapy.
B. To introduce the early uses of knitting.
C. To distinguish between two types of pilots.
D. To stress knitting is not only for old women.
9. On which occasion will a person experience “Flow”?
A. Playing computer games to one’s heart’s content.
B. Figuring out a good solution all of a sudden.
C. Working on a technical problem devotedly.
D. Hanging out with a long-lost good friend.
10. What can you infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. One stitch missed may lead to the loss of one’s attentiveness.
B. Colors and patterns make a difference to the beauty of the project.
C Smaller projects will not contribute much to experiencing “Flow”.
D. Frequent knitters are better at handling their thoughts and challenges.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Active Hands, Calm Minds. B. Unique Therapy, Effective Healing.
C. Special Techniques, Organized Thoughts. D. Simple Knitting, Strong Body.

If you use the internet, you’ve probably heard of a filter bubble (过滤气泡). Internet sites and social media platforms use algorithms (算法) that show you content based on your previous interactions, likes, and shares. Over time, this creates a filter bubble where you only see content that agrees with your interests and beliefs, which serves to convince you that your beliefs are true. But what you might not know is that in similar fashion, your brain has several mechanisms to filter information, creating personal filter bubbles that deeply shape how you live your life.
Self-created filter bubbles happen through various cognitive processes, and they have multiple consequences. They shape your experience of what’s happening by forming a lens (镜片) through which you see and interpret the world. On the internet, because things are being presented based on past user history, no two people get the same results when they search for something on the internet or open their news feed. In real life, no two people are experiencing an event or seeing a situation in the exact same way, because we all bring our own past experiences and biases (偏见) to situations, causing us to process them differently.
Filter bubbles can cause you to stay stuck in self-created and often self-limiting patterns of thought and behavior. If you’ve ever wondered why change is so hard, it’s because your mental filter bubbles make it difficult to see different possibilities. If you hold the belief that you’ re not someone who can have a high-paying job, you won’t look for one and you’ll only seek out and see jobs that match up with what you think you’re worth.
Filter bubbles can also prevent critical thinking and can lead to a limited and biased view of the world, where people don’t consider alternative viewpoints and don’t engage with others outside of their own circles. When we only consume information that confirms our preexisting beliefs and values, we don’t question the truth of that information or properly evaluate the evidence.
While you can’t prevent your brain from creating selective filter bubbles, you can become more aware so that you don’t have to be limited or trapped by them.
12. What can we learn about filter bubbles?
A. They shape our interpretations of the world.
B. They have changed the way we view ourselves.
C. They are frequent occurrences and have little effect on us.
D. They assist us in making friends with like-minded individuals.
13. How do filter bubbles impact individuals’ ability to embrace change?
A. They facilitate open-mindedness and flexibility.
B. They make individuals resistant to new opportunities.
C. They help individuals adapt quickly to new situations.
D. They prevent individuals from successfully securing a job.
14. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Examples of creating filter bubbles. B. Barriers to overcoming filter bubbles.
C. Ways of escaping from filter bubbles. D. Benefits of recognizing filter bubbles.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The dangers of bias in information consumption.
B. The influence of past experiences on our worldview.
C. The benefits of social media algorithms on our mind.
D. The impact of filter bubbles on shaping our perception.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As a single adult with a big extended family, I consider myself a true expert on the “kids table”. While one might think that only kids will be assigned to the “kids table”, some hosts held the opposite view: ____16____. So single grown-ups, college students and high-schoolers are all fair game for “kids table” placement.
The very nebulous (模糊的) rules around kids tables at holiday events made me wonder whether these separate areas are really the best way to integrate pint-sized guests into a festive party, so 1 decided to ask a group of experts about whether they recommend these arrangements for kids of all ages.
____17____ “Having a kids table at a family holiday event can be a fantastic opportunity for kids to connect and build their own relationships and even gain a sense of independence.” said Claire Weinberg, child therapist in Bethesda, Maryland.
The advice from Amy Abbott, the founder, owner and creative director of Amy Abbott Events also proves it: For larger events, dividing kids tables by age is a great idea. For example, if the host’s children are involved, each can have their own table with friends and family of a similar age. ____18____.
On the other hand, seating kids among the adults together can help kids learn social skills. “Separating children from adults is not what I would consider a best practice.____19____.including eating behaviors, social emotional skills, language, and even fine motor skills,” explained Joy Kennedy, developmental psychologist and researcher at the Education Development Center. That’s why many of our surveyed experts recommended mixing age groups together.
“For some kids, large gatherings can feel overwhelming. ____20____, if that’s the case. It can be helpful to talk to your child before the event about what they might experience and to discuss anything they may need to feel comfortable and safe.”
A. Adults act as models for a host of things
B. It can also give parents a break from the chaos
C. Preparing them in advance can make a big difference
D. It is a catch-all for any guest who isn’t a partnered adult
E. For younger children sitting with adults can be stressful
F. Special menus will be even tailored to the different age groups
G. Kids tables can be a fun way to give younger guests independence

Writing ____22____ became a beloved hobby, but as I grew older, the ____23____ began to fade. I started reading more books, encountering critiques online, and comparing my work to others. This____25____ happens often. Hobbies start as a form of____26____, a way to relax ourselves. Yet, over time, societal pressures to ____27____ can change how we view them. Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, or any other____28____, there’s an expectation to perform at a high level. When we don’t meet that standard, the joy fades, replaced by feelings of inadequacy.
For me, writing has been the one hobby I’ve regularly returned to,____29____ moments of self-doubt. I’ve taken creative writing classes and seen significant improvement, but the constant____30____ for perfection turns writing from a ____31____ into a chore. I’ve come to realize that this mindset____32____ me of the joy I once found in it.
We need to recognize that it’s ____33____ not to be great at something. Perfection is often____34____, and more often than not, we are our toughest critics. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My day started just like all the other days for the past 15 years where I get up, make some coffee, shower, get dressed, and leave for the train station at precisely 7:35 A.M. to arrive at work by 8:30.While on the train, I would always choose a seat away from the crowd so I could read the newspaper in peace and quiet.
At work, I am always burdened with questions from co-workers, suppliers, telephone calls, and then those dreaded meetings, so the last thing I need is some stranger to sit beside me and start small talk.
I don’t know why, but for some reason, when I got on the train today, it was unusually full. With hesitation, I sat down in the only seat available beside a middle-aged man who had his head down and seemed to be lost in his thoughts. I was glad that he didn’t notice when I sat next to him as he just continued to look down towards the floor.
Shortly after the train left for my 30-minute ride downtown, I found myself wondering what this man was thinking about. What could be so important that he didn’t even see me sitting next to him? I tried to forget about it and started to read my paper. However, for some strange reason, this “inner voice” kept prompting me to talk to this man. I tried to ignore the “voice” as there was no way I was starting a conversation with a complete stranger.
As you probably guessed, I eventually broke down and came up with an excuse to ask him a question. When he raised his head and turned his eyes toward me, I could see that he must have been really upset as he had red eyes and still had some tears rolling down the side of his face, despite his feeble attempt to wipe them away. I can’t describe the sadness I felt seeing someone in so much pain.
We talked for about 20 minutes, and in the end, he seemed to be doing better. As we were leaving the train, he thanked me heartily for being an “angel” by taking the time to talk. I never did find out what was making his heart so heavy with pain, but I was glad I listened to the “voice” that day.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

4. Which is one of the goals of developing e-skin?

C
8 What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
C. Smaller projects will not contribute much to experiencing “Flow”.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了编织活动对人们心理健康的积极影响,包括其早期的应用、能让人进入“心流”状态以及有助于人们更好地处理思绪和挑战。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“The cliche (陈词滥调) of a knitter is a white-haired lady. But in the 1940s, young male Royal Air Force pilots used needles as they waited for their next mission. Wartime pilots crashed a lot and ‘lap crafts’ like knitting, helped rebuild flexibility in wounded limbs while also helping to settle wounded minds. They were the foundation of early occupational therapy
根据第四段“In reality, it is a ‘Flow’, which is a concept first named by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi as he wrote in his book, ‘The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times. The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.’(实际上,它是一种‘心流’,这是心理学家米哈里·契克森米哈赖在他的书中首次命名的概念,他在书中写道:‘我们生命中最美好的时刻不是被动、接受和放松的时刻。最美好的时刻通常出现在一个人自愿努力去完成一些困难且有价值的事情,从而使身心达到极限的时候。’)”可知,当一个人自愿努力去完成一些困难且有价值的事情时会体验到“心流”。由此推知,所以当一个人全身心投入于解决一个技术问题时,会体验到“心流”。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Even a simple knitting or crochet pattern requires attentiveness to ensure that each stitch is made correctly.(即使是一个简单的编织或钩织图案,也需要集中注意力,以确保每一针都织得正确)”和最后一段“The Cardiff research team found that even though most of the people surveyed were employed, three-quarters of those who knitted three or more times a week felt significantly more able to organise their thoughts and forget their problems.(卡迪夫研究小组发现,尽管接受调查的大多数人都有工作,但那些每周编织三次或更多次的人中有四分之三觉得自己在组织思维和忘记问题方面的能力明显更强)”可知,经常编织的人在组织思维和忘记问题方面的能力明显更强,所以他们更擅长处理思维和应对挑战。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,重点结合文章第三段“Physiotherapist Betsan Corkhill and occupational therapist Jill Riley were part of a team from Cardiff University that, ten years ago, surveyed more than 3,500 knitters and found that the more frequently people knitted, the calmer and happier they felt.(物理治疗师贝特森·科克希尔和职业治疗师吉尔·莱利是卡迪夫大学一个团队的成员。十年前,该团队对 3500 多名编织者进行了调查,发现人们编织的频率越高,感觉就越平静和快乐。)”可知,文章主要介绍了编织活动对人们心理健康的积极影响,包括让人心情平静、进入“心流”状态。故A选项“Active Hands, Calm Minds(灵巧的双手,平静的心灵)”准确概括了文章主旨,是最佳标题。故选A项。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

E. For younger children, sitting with adults can be stressful
F. Special menus will be even tailored to the different age groups
G. Kids tables can be a fun way to give younger guests independence

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
At work I am always burdened with questions from co-workers, suppliers, telephone calls, and then those dreaded meetings, so the last thing I need is some stranger to sit beside me and start small talk.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Several weeks later, I found an envelope on my desk with only the word “Angel” written on it. Curious and slightly puzzled, I opened it and found a heartfelt letter from the man I had met on the train that day. In his letter, he thanked me for taking the time to talk to him when he was at his lowest. He shared that he had been facing overwhelming personal struggles and had even considered ending his life that very day. My simple act of reaching out, he wrote, had reminded him that there were still people who cared, and it gave him the strength to keep going. The letter closed with words that touched me deeply: “You were the angel I needed. God heard my prayer and sent you at just the right time.”
Deeply touched yet still shaken, I sat there holding the letter, feeling lucky that I followed my inner voice. I had almost ignored that “inner voice” urging me to speak to him, but now I understood why I hadn’t. It was a small act, but it was indeed a calling of my inner kindness, which had made a significant difference in his life. From that day on, I promised myself to always listen to that quiet voice within, especially when it nudged me to show kindness or reach out to someone in need even there was no apparent reason. Sometimes, a few minutes of our time can mean the world to someone else, and perhaps, in our own small way, we can all be someone’s “angel.”
