M: Is the coffee free to refill, so I can drink as much as I like?

W: Yes, no problem. That is nine dollars altogether. Place your credit card here, please. Your food will be here within fifteen minutes.

Welcome everyone to the London Museum of Ancient Eastern Art. We haven’t been receiving school groups for long. In fact, you are one of the first groups recently, so your advice is welcome. We will try our best to guide you around the rooms and tell you about the amazing objects inside. Please feel free to have some food or drinks before the tour, and you can buy some gifts from the store to your right during the tour. Then, take a look at your brochures, which show the map of the building and where all the exhibits are. There is also information about the history of this museum. Construction of the biggest and oldest room, Langston Gallery, began under Sir Charles Langston. This is where we will be spending the majority of our time. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to see the museum completed in his lifetime. Later, other people took over the project upon his death, and finished it ten years later in 1895. The museum you see today took shape in 1905, with the addition of a second floor. We will not be going there, since it contains the special collection. You must book an appointment if you wish to see any of the items contained within it.

根据“In person”部分“The Box Office is open from Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m.—8 p.m.(票房的开放时间是周一至周六的上午10点到晚上8点)”可知,票房的开放时间是周一至周六的上午10点到晚上8点。
根据“Schools”部分“School parties of ten or more can book tickets in advance for £6 each and will get every tenth ticket free(10人或以上的学校团体可以提前预订门票,每张6英镑,并且每10张票免1张)”可知,10人或以上的学校团体可以提前预订门票,每张6英镑,并且每10张票免1张。 故选A项。
根据“Standby”部分“Best available seats are on sale at a five percent discount, from one hour before the performance for people qualified for Saver and Supersaver discounts and thirty minutes before for all other customers(最佳可用座位以九五折出售,符合“优惠票”和“超级优惠票”折扣条件的人可在演出前1小时购买,其他所有客户可在演出前30分钟购买)”以及“Saver”部分“Savers are available for children under 16 years old, over 60s and students(16岁以下儿童、60岁以上老人和学生可享受优惠票)”可知,学生属于享受“Saver”折扣的人群,他们可以在演出前1小时购买“Standby”票,45分钟在1小时之内,所以学生可以在演出前45分钟购买“Standby”票,故选D项。

For her 85th birthday, I gave my mother an iPad. Though she’d never used a computer, she showed a keen interest in the device because she knew people who had one, and she believed that if she didn’t keep up with technology, she’d one day find herself in a computerized kitchen, unable to open a can of soup.
Then began her journey of exploring the digital world. Mom is a reader, so I downloaded the library app and signed her up for an e-card. She regularly downloaded e-books herself. When they were not immediately available, she put them on hold and usually forgot about them later. Next, we handled Netflix. Being a movie lover, Mom was astonished by the number of films that Netflix has on offer. One Saturday she called because she was having trouble logging onto Netflix. She was sure that she had entered correct user’s name and password, but without any luck. I suggested the version might be too old. “They probably have fewer people working as it’s a long weekend,” she told me.
Now, we FaceTime and Zoom every day. She reads e-books, amazed that she can check them out in the middle of the night. She watches TV series and even knows about the most recent hit. However, she is still unable to surf the Internet smoothly — whenever she wants to browse the news sector online, she might touch the pop-up ads and sidebars by accident, thus ending up on strange pages.
I can’t wait for the day when we can sit down in person and surf the Internet together. In the meantime, it’s great to see how much her confidence has grown. Yesterday, she FaceTimed me “I’ve made a resolution,” she announced. “I’m going to learn how to operate every piece of technology in the apartment — including the TV remote.”
24. Why did the author’s mom show a keen interest in iPad?
A. Because she was a movie lover. B. Because everyone she knew had one.
C. Because it was gifted by her daughter. D. Because she didn’t want to be left behind.
25. What might be the reason why the author’s mother couldn’t log onto Netflix?
A. The app needed to be updated. B. Few people worked on the weekend.
C. She entered the wrong user’s password. D. Her iPad’s operating system broke down.
26. What trouble does the author’s mom encounter when surfing the Internet?
A. It’s hard to read e-books at night. B. She might be led to strange pages.
C. The sidebars fail to function properly. D. There is nothing fun in the news sector.
27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the article?
A. To suggest some apps an iPad offers to old people.
B. To share her mom’s experiences of learning technology.
C. To criticize technology for being unfriendly to seniors.
D. To show her approaches to teaching her mom to use an iPad.
D 25. A 26. B 27. B

If you get a text that says “wyd” — translation: “what are you doing?” — it’s most likely there’s one thing that you’re crossing off the list: replying to the message.
According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, 99.3% of texters regularly use abbreviations (缩略语) that, in theory, could save typing time, like using “hru?” instead of asking someone how they are. David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University, wondered if this habit enhanced or diminished digital communication. He’s always made sure of texting in complete sentences, because he worried that otherwise, people on the receiving end of his messages would think he was lazy. But he wasn’t sure if his intuition (直觉) was correct, so he decided to test it.
Fang and his co-authors started off with open minds: Abbreviated messages could indicate a lack of effort that might annoy the recipient, but they also might be taken as casual, promoting a sense of closeness. Then, the researchers examined tons of online conversations, which led to the conclusion that people were less likely to reply to abbreviation-lovers. They also asked participants to rate text conversations they had received in real life. People described messages with abbreviations as being less sincere, and indicated that they weren’t ready to reply.
Why such reaction? It’s likely due to something called social exchange theory: A relationship depends on its cost-benefit balance. How much effort one person puts in influences the other person’s response. So if you feel like someone isn’t putting much into a message, you’ll likely adjust your communication accordingly.
Fang also says that those who intentionally chop letters off their words are trying to show they don’t care. “If you want to show the other person that you’re not taking this very seriously, then these abbreviations might be well-suited. Otherwise, if you’re trying to make a good impression, think twice,” he adds. “Given that texting is a mainstay of modern-day relationships, it can be helpful to reflect on your texting habits and whether you’re presenting yourself well. It matters.”
28. What does the underlined word “diminished” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Lessened. B. Opposed. C. Confused. D. Completed.
29. Why did Fang’s team carry out the research?
A. To prove abbreviations lead to closeness.
B. To clarify the effect of using abbreviations.
C. To determine abbreviations’ negative result.
D. To differentiate online and real-life conversations.
30. Why is an abbreviated message less likely to get a reply?
A. Because the sender doesn’t expect one.
B. Because the recipient wants to save time.
C. Because the cost-benefit balance is upset.
D. Because the message kind of reflects insincerity.
31. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Abbreviations should be banned as a whole.
B. Using shortened words when texting is OK.
C. People’s motivation affects their way of texting.
D. Texting habits determine modern relationships.
【答案】28 A 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第二段中“David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University, wondered if this habit enhanced or … digital communication. He’s always made sure of texting in complete sentences, because he worried that otherwise, people on the receiving end of his messages would think he was lazy. (斯坦福大学博士生David Fang想知道这种习惯是增强还是……数字交流。他一向都确保用完整的句子发短信,因为他担心不然的话,收到他消息的人会觉得他很懒。)”可知,划线词上文提到了这种习惯,下文提到了数字交流,enhanced和diminished是反义词,enhanced意为“增强”,所以可推测diminished意为“削弱,减少”,与 lessened意思相近。故选A项。
根据第二段中“David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University, wondered if this habit enhanced or diminished digital communication. He’s always made sure of texting in complete sentences, because he worried that otherwise, people on the receiving end of his messages would think he was lazy. But he wasn’t sure if his intuition (直觉) was correct, so he decided to test it. (斯坦福大学博士生David Fang想知道这种习惯是增强还是削弱了数字交流。他总是确保用完整的句子发短信,因为他担心否则,收到他信息的人会认为他很懒。但他不确定自己的直觉是否正确,所以他决定测试一下。)”以及第三段“Fang and his co-authors started off with open minds: Abbreviated messages could indicate a lack of effort that might annoy the recipient, but they also might be taken as casual, promoting a sense of closeness. Then, the researchers examined tons of online conversations, which led to the conclusion that people were less likely to reply to abbreviation-lovers.
根据第三段“They also asked participants to rate text conversations they had received in real life. People described messages with abbreviations as being less sincere, and indicated that they weren’t ready to reply. (他们还要求参与者对他们在现实生活中收到的短信对话进行评分。人们认为带有缩写的信息不那么真诚,并表示他们还没准备好回复。)”可知,缩写信息不太可能得到回复是因为这类信息在某种程度上反映了不真诚。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Fang also says that those who intentionally chop letters off their words are trying to show they don’t care. “If you want to show the other person that you’re not taking this very seriously, then these abbreviations might be well-suited. Otherwise, if you’re trying to make a good impression, think twice,” he adds. (Fang还说,那些故意省略单词字母的人是在试图表明他们不在乎。他补充说:“如果你想让对方知道你对此不是很认真,那么这些缩写可能很合适。否则,如果你想给人留下好印象,要三思而后行。”)”可知,人们使用缩略语与否取决于他们的动机,动机不同,发短信的方式也不同。所以从最后一段可以得出人们的动机影响他们发短信的方式。故选C项。
D
The warming planet is worsening mental illness and depression. Researchers need to work out the scale of the problem and how those who need assistance can be helped.
Nearly one billion people worldwide — including one in seven teenagers — have a mental disorder. A growing number of studies suggest that climate change is worsening people’s mental health and emotional well-being. Extreme heatwaves, droughts, floods and fires fuelled by climate change cause suffering, mental illness and depression. In a recent survey of people aged 16 — 35 in 10 countries, nearly 60% of respondents were highly worried about climate change, and more than 45% said their feelings about climate change affected their daily lives.
Such reactions to an existential threat are expected, and many people can handle these feelings on their own — but some need specialist help. Researchers and governments need better ways to measure the extent of climate change’s effects on mental health. Data scientists, and climate scientists should join mental-health researchers in helping those in need. Mental-health professionals also need training and support to provide help.
One key challenge for researchers is measuring the mental-health burden due to climate change and tracking it over time. Most researches so far have been conducted in high-income countries, despite low-and middle-income countries experiencing the hardest effects of the warming planet.
The good news is that some steps are already being taken. Researchers are, for instance, trying to develop global mental-health measurements that can be linked to weather and climate data. They also suggest that individuals need to know that their feelings like anxiety or anger are normal — and if they can keep their unease at bay and then take action to combat climate change, they could help themselves and the world: a double win.
32. What does the survey mentioned in paragraph 2 show?
A. Mental health is a major global concern.
B. Extreme disasters arise from climate change.
C. Climate change influences mental well-being.
D. Teenagers easily suffer from mental disorder.
33. What are specialists expected to do?
A. Improve mental illness treatment. B. Provide further training and support.
C. Work jointly to offer help to the needy. D. Guide people to handle feelings alone.
34. What does the author imply in the fourth paragraph?
A. It’s hard to find out the impact of climate change.
B. Income influences the process of global warming.
C. The result of former researches may not be reliable.
D. Economy develops at a considerable cost of our planet.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Tips on Maintaining Mental Well-Being
B. Key Challenges in Managing Eco-Anxiety
C. Low-Income Countries, Victims of Global Warming
D. Higher Temperatures, More Depression Sufferers
C 33. C 34. C 35. D

根据第四段中“One key challenge for researchers is measuring the mental-health burden due to climate change and tracking it over time. Most researches so far have been conducted in high-income countries, despite low-and middle-income countries experiencing the hardest effects of the warming planet. (研究人员面临的一个关键挑战是衡量气候变化造成的心理健康负担,并随着时间的推移对其进行跟踪。到目前为止,大多数研究都是在高收入国家进行的,尽管低收入和中等收入国家正经历着全球变暖最严重的影响。)”可知,大部分研究在高收入国家进行,而受全球变暖影响最大的却是低收入和中等收入国家,所以可以推断出以前的研究结果可能不可靠。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“The warming planet is worsening mental illness and depression. (全球变暖正在加剧精神疾病和抑郁症。)”、第二段“A growing number of studies suggest that climate change is worsening people’s mental health and emotional well-being. (越来越多的研究表明,气候变化正在恶化人们的心理健康和情绪状态。由气候变化引发的极端热浪、干旱、洪水和火灾会导致痛苦、精神疾病和抑郁症。在最近一项对10个国家16至35岁人群的调查中,近60%的受访者非常担心气候变化,超过45%的人表示他们对气候变化的感受影响了他们的日常生活。)”、第三段中“Researchers and governments need better ways to measure the extent of climate change’s effects on mental health. Data scientists, and climate scientists should join mental-health researchers in helping those in need. Mental-health professionals also need training and support to provide help. (研究人员和政府需要更好的方法来衡量气候变化对心理健康的影响程度。数据科学家和气候科学家应该与心理健康研究人员一起帮助有需要的人。心理健康专业人员也需要培训和支持来提供帮助。)”以及最后一段“The good news is that some steps are already being taken.
Ways to Overcome Self-Doubt Once and for All
People all experience some periods of self-doubt in life. Self-doubt is when we are unsure about ourselves; it happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start something new in our life, like a new job or a new relationship. ____36____ It can even limit our potential and block our way to success. Now it’s time to be strong. Here are some strategies that we can use to overcome self-doubt.
Reflect back to past achievements.
Remember the time when we achieved something remarkable? Self-reflection is one of the best tools to remove self-doubt. It makes us remember that we once achieved something great and it makes us believe that we can achieve that level of success again through concentrated efforts. ____37____ It’s wise to learn from our previous mistakes and move on!
Start journaling events.
In life, there will come many events that we are thankful for, especially our excellent achievements. ____38____ This journaling of events will be really helpful when we are doubting ourselves. Compare ourselves to the time when we achieved greatness, and convince ourselves that we can be that person again.
Seek professional help if necessary.
There are periods when we are too hard on ourselves — we don’t believe our goals and efforts are making for the betterment of our lives; this is self-sabotage — an extreme end of self-doubt. ____39____ Talk about our feelings often, and let all the negative emotions out; this will make us feel a lot better.
____40____
People always want to keep up with the Joneses. However, unrealistically drawing a parallel between others and us is a harmful act. Why would we identify ourselves with a family member, a friend, or our colleague when each of our lives is different? We should focus on ourselves and our own achievements, which will allow us to fulfill our goals without any worries.
A. Be our own biggest critic.
B. Never compare with others.
C. It is better to start keeping track of them.
D. Never live in the memory, but learn to strive from the past!
E. If not taken care of professionally, this can become a painful barrier.
F. Self-doubt isn’t that bad, which can motivate us and push us to be better in life.
G. Such a feeling will lead us into a dark situation where nothing seems to go right.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Good morning, everyone,
I’m Li Hua. I’m privileged to have the chance to share with you my view on the topic “Are we ready for double day-off?”
Since the double day-off policy was performed, senior high students have more free time, thus bringing about great changes. Some students can balance rest and study well in the two-day weekend, while for some less self-disciplined students, the two-day weekend certainly encourages idleness. Worst of all, having more leisure out of school, some may even be led astray.
As far as I’m concerned, students should spend the two-day weekend in a positive way. Besides necessary relaxation, we should make preparations for next week’s study. Only when we make the best of the double day-off can we be better prepared for upcoming challenges in study!

Uncle Richard’s New Year Dinner
Prissy Baker was buying matches in Mr. Miller’s store when her uncle, Richard Baker, came in. He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. Uncle Richard had not been on speaking terms with her or her father, his only brother, for eight years.
He was a big prosperous-looking man, an uncle to be proud of, Prissy thought. If only he were like other people’s uncles, or like what he used to be himself. He was Prissy’s only uncle, and when she had been a little girl they had been great friends, but that was before the quarrel over the division of a property with Prissy’s father.
Uncle Richard informed Mr. Miller that he was on his way to Navarre with a load of pork. “I have to deliver the pork at once or I have to do business on New Year,” said Uncle Richard. “Shouldn’t New Year be pretty much the same as any other day to you,” joked Miller, knowing Richard was a bachelor living alone. “Well, I always like a good dinner on New Year,” said Uncle Richard. “It’s the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready in the kitchen last night, but I won’t get back before one o’clock. Maybe I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After Uncle Richard drove away, Prissy headed home, thoughtfully. She didn’t mean to cook dinner, for her parents had to go to the town that morning. There was nobody else to cook for. Prissy could not help thinking about Uncle Richard. He would certainly have cold New Year cheer, enough to chill the whole coming year. She felt sorry for him, picturing him returning from Navarre, cold and hungry, only a fireless house and an uncooked dinner waiting for him. Suddenly an idea popped into Prissy’s head. Dared she?
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Prissy hurried home, put matches away, and then headed for Uncle Richard’s house half a mile away.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Prissy was just setting the table when a voice behind her said, “Well, well, what does this mean?”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Prissy hurried home, put matches away, and then headed for Uncle Richard’s house half a mile away. She had no trouble in breaking into Uncle Richard’s house, for the door was unfastened. She tripped into the kitchen, finding the dinner in its raw state: a piece of fresh pork, potatoes, cabbage, and the ingredients of a pudding. There was still a good fire in the stove, so in a short time, the kitchen was full of appetizing smell. “Uncle Richard said he’d be home by one,” said Prissy to herself, as the clock struck twelve, “I’ll set the table, dish up the dinner and leave it where it will keep warm before one, then I’ll slip away home.”
Prissy was just setting the table when a voice behind her said, “Well, well, what does this mean?” Prissy turned around, and there stood Uncle Richard! “I came to cook dinner for you, Uncle Richard,” stammered Prissy. “I’d meant to slip away before one.” “Humph!” said Uncle Richard drily. “Well, it smells good. Let’s enjoy it together.” They sat down. Prissy felt nervous, but Uncle Richard evidently had a good appetite. After the meal, he said slowly, “Prissy, you cooked a dinner for an old uncle who deserved to enjoy cold bites for his stubbornness. You brought me happiness today, and I believe I’ll have a happy year all the way through.” “Indeed, you will!” laughed Prissy. Uncle Richard looked at his niece with a smile of pleasure. “Good girl, promise to come and cook New Year’s dinner for me every New Year,” said Uncle Richard. And Prissy promised!

C
B Using shortened words when texting is OK.
C. People’s motivation affects their way of texting.
D. Texting habits determine modern relationships.

A Tips on Maintaining Mental Well-Being
B. Key Challenges in Managing Eco-Anxiety
C. Low-Income Countries, Victims of Global Warming
D. Higher Temperatures, More Depression Sufferers

It makes us remember that we once achieved something great, and it makes us believe that we can achieve that level of success again through concentrated efforts.

Dared she?
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Prissy hurried home, put matches away, and then headed for Uncle Richard’s house half a mile away.
