For several Januarys, I dutifully entered my New Year’s resolutions in a notebook, assuming that placing my pledges (誓言) for self-improvement on paper would keep me on track. Most years, though, my little declarations of resolve quickly disappeared beneath daily urgencies as I closed out the holiday season and returned to my regular life.
Last January, I adopted a different strategy to boost my chances of success. Instead of entering my resolutions in a notebook, I printed them in large type on a sheet of paper, and then nailed it above my office desk. I figured the big letters would keep my attention throughout the year. I made 10 resolutions in all — among them were pledges to volunteer more, renew old friendships, and improve my personal health.
Surprisingly, my experiment brought some memorable victories. One afternoon, I was halfway through writing an email to decline a spot on a civic (公民的) committee when I adjusted my position in the chair to gather a thought. That’s when Resolution 4, “Do more volunteer work,” caught my eye. Chastened, I decided to serve on that civic committee, a role that connected me with neighbors and made my year a much brighter one.
After a coffee break one morning, I spotted Resolution 8, “Renew and deepen my friendships,” as I returned to my workstation. Inspired, I texted three old college friends and scheduled a long-overdue lunch date.
Reaching for my briefcase before I ended my shift on a summer evening, I noticed Resolution 7, “Work on my personal health.” It greeted me like a caring workmate, just the encouragement I needed to pick up my daily walks.
Of the 10 resolutions I made last January I ended up making decent progress on nine. And I learned something valuable.
4. What was the author’s problem at first?
A. He found it hard to make a resolve.
B. He used to fail to keep his resolutions.
C. He had no idea how to improve himself.
D. He struggled during each holiday season.
5. What was the author like according to paragraph 2?
A. He was reflective and creative.
B. He was humorous and ambitious.
C. He hated making pledges at the office.
D. He disliked to keep himself occupied.
6. What did the author probably learn in the end?
A. Friendship was forever in the heart.
B. Personal health should always come first.
C. Success was guaranteed by writing resolutions down.
D. A vision of our best self was often within reach.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The author’s traditional way of making New-Year’s resolutions.
B. The author’s failure to keep New-Year’s resolutions in the past.
C. The author’s new strategy for making New-Year’s resolutions and its positive results.
D. The author’s opinion on the importance of making New-Year’s resolutions.

Ocean alkalinity (碱度) enhancement is a proposed method of removing extra CO2 from the atmosphere. It involves adding alkaline substances, such as basalt or calcium oxide, to ocean water to increase its pH. This helps to change dissolved (溶解的) CO2 in seawater into carbon compounds, unlocking the capacity for the oceans to draw down further CO2 from the atmosphere.
In theory ocean alkalinization could remove many billions of tons more CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to limit the impacts of climate change. But is releasing vast quantities of alkaline substances into the ocean harmless?
Chris Reinhard at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and his team investigated how the release of alkaline minerals would affect the cycling of carbon in the ocean. Using computer models, they assessed the impact of alkaline mineral release on “marine (海洋的) snow”, the tiny pieces of organic matter that sink from upper layers to the deep ocean and are central to the ecological and biological function of the ocean. They also modelled how effective alkaline minerals would be at bolstering carbon absorption in the oceans.
The research produced some worrying findings: Naturally occurring alkaline minerals such as basalt were found to be ineffective at increasing ocean carbon absorption, because they don’t dissolve well in ocean water. They may also seriously affect the composition of marine snow, reducing the availability of organic matter that small sea creatures and other animals rely on for sustenance. This could have serious consequences across the food web in the ocean, even affecting the number of fish, warns Reinhard.
Christopher Pearce at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK, says the study raises some interesting questions, but more research is needed to see if the findings apply to real-world tests. Shallow coastal waters may respond differently to alkalinization compared with the open-ocean settings the study modelled.
8. What is the main purpose of ocean alkalinization?
A. To reduce atmospheric CO2.
B. To create more marine snow.
C. To improve marine biodiversity.
D. To remove carbon from the ocean.
9. What does the underlined word “bolstering” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Breaking. B. Balancing. C. Blocking. D. Boosting.
10 How does alkalinization affect marine ecosystems?
A. It pollutes marine snow.
B. It damages the food chain.
C. It prevents fish from breathing.
D. It stops organic matter from dissolving.
11. What does Christopher Pearce suggest about the findings?
A. They need further confirmation.
B. They conflict with real-world tests.
C. They apply only to shallow waters.
D. They are irrelevant to open oceans.
D
New applications of artificial intelligence (AI) repeatedly challenge what was once thought impossible. This technology is having a powerful impact on nearly every industry worldwide. Healthcare is no exception.
It’s forecast that by 2030, the healthcare field will face a critical shortage of nearly 10 million physicians and nurses globally, while also dealing with the increased needs of an aging population. Al offers practical solutions that can help organizations across the globe overcome these problems and improve outcomes.
By integrating AI as part of diagnostic (诊断的)services, healthcare organizations are facilitating faster diagnoses and treatment decisions that improve patient outcomes. For example, AI provides support to radiologists (放射科医生), who read hundreds of medical images a day, helping them analyze images such as X-rays and MRIs more quickly and accurately. This allows care teams to prioritize complex and urgent cases.
Necessary but time-consuming administrative tasks contribute to employee burnout and take clinicians away from the bedside. New AI tools can help reduce burnout and allow staff to focus on patients by automating manual and repetitive tasks such as entering data for electronic health records.
In addition to supporting employees in their day-to-day work, AI is helping address staffing needs. Historically, nurse staffing has been a highly manual process relying on phone calls and text messages. Today, we are increasingly using AI analytics to streamline this process, including seeking to pair team members who have previously worked together because research demonstrates that it positively impacts productivity.
While AI presents a golden opportunity for change, it requires an ongoing commitment to identifying and addressing the potential concerns that emerge with any new technology.
For the benefits of AI to be realized globally, we must be mindful of potential problems and establish safeguards related to data privacy, ethical (伦理的) considerations, cultural sensitivity and its accessibility to diverse populations. The World Health Organization (WHO) published ethical AI guidance in 2021, pointing out that while AI holds great promise for improving the delivery of healthcare worldwide, this can happen “only if human rights are put at the heart of its design and use.”
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The reasons why healthcare industry faces challenges.
B. The promising future of the healthcare industry with AL.
C. Solutions to the healthcare worker shortage in detail.
D. The impact of AI on healthcare industry facing challenges.
13. What does the example of radiologists show?
A. Their heavy reliance on AL
B. AI’s assistance in diagnoses.
C. Radiologists’ importance in urgent cases.
D. AI’s role in creating medical images.
14. How will AI benefit healthcare employees?
A. It’ll improve communication and cooperation.
B. It’ll reduce workload and increase efficiency.
C. It’ll help with complex administrative tasks.
D. It’ll pair clinicians and patients automatically.
15. What should be the principle of using AI in healthcare according to the WHO?
A. Respect patient privacy.
B. Ensure data accessibility.
C. Put people’s needs first.
D. Promote medical ethics.

Patience Is a Virtue
In the Paris Olympic Games, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan realized one of the most outstanding achievements in running history. On the biggest stage in sports, Hassan competed in three events — running two rounds of the 5,000-meter run, the 10,000-meter run, and the marathon — over nine days. ____16____
Early in each race, viewers may have counted Hassan out. While some runners took off quickly to claim front-running positions early, Hassan held back and conserved her energy. She waited to release her final charge right when she needed to — at the end of each race, timing things perfectly to secure a medal. Well, what led to her success? ____17____
As a matter of fact, patience is also a feature of a good life beyond sports. Here are some reminders about this often-underappreciated virtue.
I used to run by a field in the winter months that had a sign that read, “____18____” I laughed at that sign, positioned on a barren (荒芜的) field. But as spring approached, the day arrived when I would run past the field, and, suddenly, it was no longer barren. It was full of wildflowers of various colors and shapes. The flowers had been there all along, in various stages, from seed to blossom (开花), making progress beneath the dirt. Patience is a lot like a wildflower field. ____19____ But waiting well often involves a lot of determination and unseen work.
____20____ Philosopher Matthew Pianalto calls patience a foundational virtue. He cites a well-known saying that patience is the root and guardian of all the virtues. Stated differently, it is difficult to be loving, courageous, or wise without patience.
A. Wildflowers are in progress.
B. Ultimately, she secured three medals.
C. To outsiders, it can look like inaction.
D. Sometimes, patience requires preparation.
E. Patience supports many other virtues as well.
F. Patience was, of course, one of the major factors.
G. Patience is rarely celebrated in a culture that prizes speed.

Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago. His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well. To make ends meet, his wife, Mrs Lim, had to take on an overseas job offer. This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children, Luke and Lisa, all by himself. Seeing their father being so unhappy every day, Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up. On the day of Mr. Lim’s birthday, the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry, Luke! Dad will be home anytime now! Let’s hide to surprise him!” Lisa said. After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table, something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected, they hid under it. It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake.
They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose. Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall, intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party. Moments later, the main door creaked (嘎吱作响) open. Suddenly, a loud shout filled the air!
“Who messed up the wall on purpose?” Mr Lim shouted angrily. On hearing those words, Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock. As the elder brother, Luke knew he had to protect Lisa. Taking a deep breath, Luke slowly moved out from under the table. Before he could say a word, Mr Lim gave him an earful (长时间的斥责). Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, Luke said, “Dad, you’re wrong. We just wanted to...”
“Don’t you dare give me excuses!” Mr Lim raised his voice. Then, with great force, he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table. It hit the birthday cake, ruining it! Seeing that, Luke’s heart broke. He cried.
“Dad ... we ... we’re sorry! We wanted to give ... give you a birthday sur ... surprise,” Lisa explained in between cries, after moving out from her hiding spot.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Of the 10 resolutions I made last January, I ended up making decent progress on nine. And I learned something valuable.

In theory, ocean alkalinization could remove many billions of tons more CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to limit the impacts of climate change.
A. Breaking. B. Balancing. C. Blocking. D. Boosting.
10. How does alkalinization affect marine ecosystems?
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. A

【答案】
Hearing that, Mr. Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke. He looked at his two children with a mixture of shock and remorse in his eyes. He knelt down, gently wiping away Luke’s tears and said, “I’m so sorry, son. I’ve been so caught up in my own troubles that I didn’t see your love and effort. This is the most special birthday gift I could have ever received.” He then hugged Luke tightly, and soon Lisa joined in, their little bodies trembling with the remnants of fear and relief. Mr. Lim realized how selfish he had been, drowning in his own sorrow while his children were trying their best to bring joy to his life.
After the tension eased, Luke and Lisa sang a birthday song for Mr. Lim. Their voices, though a bit shaky from the earlier incident, were filled with love. Mr. Lim listened with tears in his eyes, feeling an overwhelming sense of warmth and happiness. Despite the ruined cake and the painted wall, this was the most precious moment for him. As they finished the song, Mr. Lim kissed his children on their foreheads, promising them that from then on, he would face life’s difficulties with a more positive attitude and cherish every moment with his family.
