When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
4. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?
A. He was fond of traveling. B. He enjoyed being alone.
C. He had an inquiring mind. D. He longed to be a doctor.
5. Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?
A. To feed the animals. B. To build an ecosystem.
C. To protect the plants. D. To test the eco-machine.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?
A. To review John’s research plans. B. To show an application of John’s idea.
C. To compare John’s different jobs. D. To erase doubts about John’s invention.
7. What is the basis for John’s work?
A. Nature can repair itself. B. Organisms need water to survive.
C. Life on Earth is diverse. D. Most tiny creatures live in groups.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段“When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making. (当约翰·托德还是个孩子的时候,他喜欢探索房子周围的树林,观察大自然是如何解决问题的。例如,一条肮脏的小溪流经植物和微小生物居住的岩石后,往往会变得清澈。长大后,约翰开始思考这个过程是否可以用来清理人们制造的混乱)”以及第二段“After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? (在大学学习了农业、医学和渔业之后,约翰又回到了观察自然和提出问题的生活中。为什么某些植物能捕获有害细菌?哪些鱼类会食用致癌化学物质?)”可知,约翰聪颖好学、好奇心很强。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“After a few weeks, John added the sludge. (几个星期后,约翰把污泥加了进去)”以及倒数第三段“He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water. (他对结果感到惊讶。生态机器里的动植物把污泥当成了食物,开始吃了起来!几周之内,它就被消化了,只剩下纯净水)”可知,约翰把污泥放进罐子里是为了测试生态机器。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China. (这些年来,约翰承担了许多重大工作。他开发了一个类似温室的设施,可以处理来自南伯灵顿1600户家庭的污水。他还设计了一种生态机器来清洁中国东南部城市福州的运河水)”可推知,作者提到福州的目的是展示约翰想法的应用。故选B。

If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience - since the fatigue may indicate you’re at higher risk for developing a condition that can lead to dementia (痴呆), a new study has found.
Among participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm, 35.5% developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome (运动认知风险综合征), or MCR compared with 6.7% of people without those problems, according to the study.
MCR is marked by slow walking speed and complaints of memory problems among older people who don’t already have dementia or a mobility disability. The risk of developing dementia more than doubles in those with this syndrome, which was first described in 2013.
The findings are based on 445 adults who were aged 76 on average. Participants walked on treadmills (跑步机) so their initial gaits could be recorded, then were assessed annually from 2011 to 2018. The study authors also collected yearly data on participants’ recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments.
Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed MCR syndrome. Compared with “good” sleepers, “poor” sleepers had only a slightly higher risk of MCR.
“The study findings may help physicians and patients be more open to asking questions about sleep patterns, and to looking more closely at walking speed when making an early diagnosis,” said Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida.
“If you’re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help,” Isaacson said, “that can include physical and occupational therapy evaluation, and at-home adaptations such as installing bars in the shower, removing clutter (杂物) and using night-lights.”
“MCR syndrome is newly identified, so experts still have a lot to learn before they can explain in detail what causes it and how it affects the body,” Isaacson said.
8. What does the underlined word “fatigue” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A. Weakness. B. Tiredness. C. Comfort. D. Happiness.
9. What might be the feature of MCR?
A. Slow movement. B. More complaints.
C. Excessive sleepiness. D. Rapid cognitive declines.
10. How did the study collect data on participants’ sleep?
A. By writing sleep diaries. B. By doing treadmill tests.
C. By conducting annual interviews. D. By monitoring sleep at home.
11. What should a senior with mobility issues do?
A. Live normally. B. Reduce activity. C. Stay awake. D. Avoid falls.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据文章第一段“If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience (如果你在年老时发现自己在日常活动中犯困,你可能需要考虑的不仅仅是一种不便)”可知,此处提到了犯困的问题,紧接着下文提到了可能导致的风险,所以可推测划线词可能是“疲劳”的意思。
根据文章第三段“MCR is marked by slow walking speed and complaints of memory problems among older people who don’t already have dementia or a mobility disability. (MCR的特点是走路速度慢,在没有痴呆症或行动障碍的老年人中抱怨有记忆问题。)”可知,MCR的特点是行动缓慢。故选A项。
根据文章第四段“The study authors also collected yearly data on participants’ recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments. (研究作者还收集了参与者在评估前两周对睡眠质量和睡眠时间的年度回忆数据。)”可知,此处提到了关于睡眠的年度回忆数据,所以这项研究是通过年度采访收集参与者的睡眠数据的。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“If you’re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help (如果你已经有行动不便的问题,预防跌倒会有所帮助)”可知,行动不便的老年人应该预防跌倒。故选D项。
D
Nostalgia (怀旧), or the experience of lovingly recalling and longing for your past, is seemingly fitting into our culture right now, with movie and TV screens especially expanded. On its surface, it seems simple: picturing fond feelings from our past just makes us feel good. But there’s a lot more going on.
In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures.
During the tasks, a machine examined the 34 participants. After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences.
But Swets, another nostalgia expert, warned that using nostalgia for pain relief might not be a blanket solution for everyone. He highlights that nostalgia is a personal emotional experience that varies in terms of frequency and intensity. “What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.” As with other positive psychology interventions, the impacts can depend on the person.
The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies.
12. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Heat resistance. B. Anxiety level.
C. Childhood experience. D. Picture cues.
13. What does the research find about nostalgia?
A. It reduces bad stimuli. B. It makes brain active.
C. It relieves one’s pain. D. It reshapes one’s past memory.
14. What does Swets say about nostalgia?
A. It’s a good way to recall fine times. B. It’s a universal solution to pain relief.
C. Its effect is influenced by relationships. D. Its form is similar to other interventions.
15 What will the follow-up study focus on?
A. Nostalgic experience types. B. Personal nostalgia effects.
C. The impact of nostalgia on all age groups. D. The reason for the popularity of nostalgia.
D 13. C 14. C 15. B
根据第二段“In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures.(在最近的研究中,中国科学院的研究人员要求研究参与者在观看怀旧图片(展示旧漫画、童年游戏或糖果的图片)时对热刺激的疼痛程度进行评分,而另一组人则观看现代图片)”可知,两组研究参与者在研究设计中所给的图片信息不同。
根据第三段“After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences.(在获得脑部扫描后,研究人员发现,观察激活童年记忆的图片与参与者报告的较弱的疼痛感有关。通过控制他们的不适,而不是减少不愉快的刺激,人们可以利用怀旧来重建他们的痛苦经历)”可知,怀旧心理能减轻人们的痛苦。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.”(“怀旧是一种与他人联系在一起的感觉,”Swets说,他指出,许多研究中的线索都是为了让人们想起与家人和朋友的美好时光。“所以,那些更回避与他人建立亲密关系的人,或者更倾向于保持距离的人,不会得到同样的怀旧结果。”)”可知,Swets表明怀旧是一种与他人联系的感觉,而拒绝亲密关系的人不会得到同样的怀旧心理。故怀旧心理的效果是受人际关系影响的。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies.(参与研究的研究人员还计划在未来的研究中使用不同的年龄组来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响,而不是像老音乐和电影这样的常见怀旧线索)”可知,研究人员计划在未来的研究中接触不同年龄组的受试者来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响。

根据上文“There’s nothing like the end of the year to bring up a lot of different feelings. Stress, anxiety, anticipation, excitement, and dread are some examples of emotions that people feel when they realize it is fast approaching.(没有什么比年末更能让人产生不同的感受了。压力、焦虑、期待、兴奋和恐惧是人们意识到它即将到来时所感受到的情绪的一些例子)”以及后文“There are some common reasons for feeling year-end anxiety. For example, realizing we have goals and experiences we didn’t get to, feeling like we’re running out of time to do the things that matter, and anticipating end-of-the-year social obligations and responsibilities. How to cope with it? (年终焦虑有一些常见的原因。例如,意识到我们有目标和经历,我们没有达到,感觉我们没有时间做重要的事情,并期待年底的社会义务和责任。如何应对?)”可知,上文提到年末让人焦虑,后文提到了常见原因,推测本句是在说明年终时感到焦虑、情绪化是正常表现。故G选项“在年终的时候变得更加自我反省和情绪化是很正常的”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Reflect on the positive experiences you had and acknowledge the wins from this past year.(回顾一下过去一年的积极经历,承认过去一年的成功)”以及后文“When we’re so busy and wrapped up in what’s next, we quickly dismiss the good. So list your best memories, proudest moments, and small-to-big wins from this year so far.(当我们如此忙碌,被接下来的事情所包围时,我们很快就忽略了美好的事物。所以,列出今年到目前为止你最美好的回忆,最骄傲的时刻,以及从小到大的胜利)”可知,本句主要说明我们忽略了美好的事物,故E选项“我们很容易忘记自己曾经拥有的积极经历”符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Recall the goals or experiences you hoped to have this year. Be clear on what you think you should do and what you genuinely want to do.(回忆一下你今年希望实现的目标或经历。弄清楚你认为你应该做什么,你真正想做什么)”以及后文“It’s liberating to just accept that not everything you hoped for will happen and that is okay. To tackle it, choose one to two things you want to turn your attention to and can do.(接受并不是你所希望的一切都会发生,这是一种解脱,这没关系。为了解决这个问题,选择一到两件你想要转移注意力并且可以做的事情)”可知,在回忆自己的目标和经历的时候,可以接受所发生的事情,即允许自己放弃一些想要的事物。故B选项“允许自己暂时放弃一些”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据后文“Rather than wait until next year to “restart”, take action now. Just make plans and reach out to friends. Tell them what you’re excited about and what you plan to do.(与其等到明年再“重启”,不如现在就采取行动。制定计划,向朋友寻求帮助。告诉他们你对什么感到兴奋,你打算做什么)”可知,后文提到现在就采取行动,制定计划,即本段的主旨是立即去做和自己计划有关的事情,故C选项“今天做一件与你的目标有关的事”符合语境,故选C。
20题详解】
根据上文“Besides, helpful mindset may shift to feel less anxious. Hence, avoid the rigid attitude that if you don’t get something done by December 31 then all hope is lost.(此外,乐于助人的心态可能会转变为不那么焦虑。因此,不要抱着“如果你在12月31日之前没有完成某件事,那么所有的希望就都破灭了”的刻板态度)”以及后文“Being understanding and forgiving yourself will help you keep going with the precious time that remains this year.(理解和原谅自己会帮助你在今年剩下的宝贵时间里继续前进)”可知,要理解和原谅自己,说明不应该有刻板态度,要善待自我。故A选项“相反,要善待自己”符合语境,故选A。

Thanksgiving for the Soul
Working as a primary teacher in Pompton Lakes Primary School, New Jersey, I particularly believed in cultivating love in children from an early age. I wanted children to experience that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that love of society and love of life is not just lip service; that people somehow have to make it come alive. I hoped they could experience a sense of their own power to make a difference.
There was a rural area nearby where a lot of aged people lived in solitude (孤独). They either had no family or their children had left to work in big cities. Most of them lived on government aid to keep body and soul together. An agency, which was in charge of the elder people in this region, had once told me about a needy grandmother, Mrs. Wilson, who had lived alone for many years. I had always desired to do something for her. So I came up with the Thanksgiving plan.
In October, I told the eight-year-olds in my class about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy grandma who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class clutching (紧握) their hard-earned money. They had cleared rubbish, set tables, washed dishes, helped with younger siblings. And now they couldn’t wait to go shopping.
I watched while they ran up and down the supermarket aisles At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the trimmings (配料). Then someone spotted a “necessity”—flowers, which caught their attention. All kids ran toward the holiday flowers, with one proposing, “Flowers! We can buy her a bunch of flowers!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“Flowers may not be as practical as food.” I said.

With a food box and a bunch of flowers, we finally arrived at Mrs. Wilson’s home.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Flowers may not be as practical as food.” I said. “Food will feed her for the day, but flowers will delight her for days or longer.” one of them insisted. Looking at the bunches of blooming flowers neatly arranged there, sweet scent filling the air, I changed my mind. With my consent, the kids rushed forward, chose a bunch of beautiful purple flowers, and carefully placed it into the cart. Soon we jumped into the car and drove toward Mrs. Wilson’s home. The little ones talked and giggled on the way, unable to hold back their excitement.
With a food box and a bunch of flowers, we finally arrived at Mrs. Wilson’s home. Mrs. Wilson, a little woman with a weary face, came to the door to welcome us. With great hospitality, she led us into her house. Her mouth was widened with great joy as we carried the food box in. When one kid sent her the sweet flowers, she simply couldn’t conceal her excitement, tears glittering in her eyes. Holding the flowers to her nose, she seemed to regain her youth and vigor. At that moment, the kids had found the power they possessed to make another life better. Sometimes a bunch of flowers could nourish another soul on a dark November day.

“Flowers may not be as practical as food.” I said.
