During the last few weeks, I spent numerous hot nights standing beside or on my bed, trying to catch mosquitoes in my room. After my friend kept hearing about my nightly adventures, he showed up with a gift one morning: a mosquito net. It was huge, white and held the promise of a good night’s sleep.
I asked my father for instructions to hang it up, which he emailed in great detail — thinking I’d be able to turn the screw on which to hang the net into the ceiling. That didn’t quite work out.
Luckily, a plumber (水电工) happened to come to my house that day. After examining the net and my ceiling, he assessed it wasn’t going to happen by hand. “You’ll need an electric drill.” Then I showed him how I could borrow a drill on an app that lets us borrow things we need from your neighbors and received three responses from people living nearby within minutes, saying they’d happily lend out theirs. One of them turned out to be a friend whose house is only 200 meters away, and the device could be picked up at his place in the evening.
Back at home, I started drilling but seemed to be unable to get through the ceiling. My dad got on speakerphone and listened to what it sounded like. After three minutes, he told me to stop. I might be hitting iron and the last thing I wanted to do was to mess up the drill. “We’ll do it after I come back next week,” he said. “Just be patient.”
Just then I heard someone parking their car outside my house. I walked up and asked for help. To my surprise, they agreed immediately. While his girlfriend and I looked at the man in admiration, he got through the ceiling within 20 seconds. The mosquito net was finally up within a minute.

A. Continuing drilling. B. Using a stronger drill.
C. Waiting until he came back. D. Asking a neighbor for help.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Patience is the key to success.
B. Sometimes, asking for help can be more effective.
C. Tools can make a difference in solving problems.
D. It’s important to wait for the right person to come.

Baseball has served as more than just a sport throughout its history. One such period is the Great Recession (大衰退) of 2008, a time marked by financial hardship, unemployment, and uncertainty. Baseball, however, managed not just to survive but to provide hope, entertainment. and even a sense of normality to many.
As the Great Recession spread around the world starting in 2008, every sector faced significant challenges. For Major League Baseball (MLB), the impact was visible. Fans found themselves tightening their belts. Teams began offering flexible ticket pricing and promotions to families and individuals hit hardest by the economic downturn. “Dollar Night” promotions became more common, offering affordable entrance fees and snacks to ensure family visits remained possible.
While the Great Recession posed numerous challenges, it also coexisted with a technological transformation (转变) that reshaped how fans engaged with baseball. MLB made use of the digital wave, enabling fans worldwide to watch games live. Moreover, the rise of social media allowed for more personalized and immediate fan engagement. Teams and players used platforms to communicate directly with fans through platforms, sharing behind-the-scenes content, hosting live Q & A sessions, and offering insights into players’ life off the field. These innovations further increased the role of baseball as a comforting, unifying force even during economic hardship.
Baseball’s influence as a cultural and social entity (实体) remained deep during the Great Recession. The 2008 World Series, for instance, offered a rare moment in economic recession. As the Philadelphia Phillies won the game and kept their title, the win symbolized championship and community spirit, encouraging far beyond the city and showing baseball’s ability to inspire unity across different backgrounds and challenges.
As we reflect on the interaction between baseball and economic crises from the Great Recession to today’s economic landscape, it becomes clear that the sport stands as a remarkable proof to adaptation and cultural permanence.
28. Why did people go watch baseball games in the crisis?
A. They were little affected by the crisis. B. It provided inspiration to people.
C. They didn’t work so they had time. D. It was the only amusement at that time.
29. How did MLB attract audiences during the Great Recession?
A. By providing free snacks to fans. B. By reducing the number of games.
C. By increasing face-to-face interactions. D. By adopting family-friendly promotions.
30. What did the social media bring to baseball?
A. Increasing fans’ engagements. B. Organizing larger fan events.
C. Broadcasting games in real time. D. Establishing a special community.
31. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Impacts of Sports on the Social Culture. B. The Adjustment of MLB in the Great Recession.
C. The Role of Baseball During Economic Crises. D. The Importance of Unity Spirit During Hardship.

Popular and distinctive, known for their kitten-like faces and red coats, red pandas are endangered with their numbers decreasing. Due to their fragmented (分散的) populations, obtaining an accurate count is challenging, but the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that fewer than 10,000 remain in the wild. Alarmingly, their populations are believed to have decreased by approximately 40% over the past two decades.
Red pandas rely heavily on bamboo. About 98% of a red panda’s diet is bamboo. But unlike giant pandas that eat almost all parts of the plant, red pandas are captious and only dine on the nutrient-rich tips of the leaves and the tasty, tender shoots. They need a lot of it to survive-around 2 kilograms each day. Sometimes, if they have no other option, they will eat fruit, roots, acorns, grasses, insects, and bird eggs, as well as kill small animals.
Unfortunately, finding enough bamboo has become increasingly difficult as red pandas’ habitats continue to shrink. Human activities such as deforestation for housing, farming, and mining have led to significant habitat loss. Additionally, livestock (家畜) in forests competes with red pandas for bamboo. Natural disasters, including landslides, floods, and heavy snow, have further damaged their habitats. Other threats include forest fires, invasive (入侵的) plant species, and the natural death of bamboo. Red pandas also face dangers from illegal hunting. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that hunting is increasing, with red pandas being killed for their fur and meat. Some hunters even capture and sell them as illegal pets.
Efforts are underway to protect red pandas and their habitats. China has established 46 protected areas, covering about 65% of the species’ habitats. India, Bhutan, and Myanmar have also established protected areas. Organizations such as the Red Panda Network and WWF are working with local communities to raise awareness, train wildlife guardians, and establish conservation programs.
By supporting conservation efforts, individuals can help ensure a future for these endangered animals. Promising to protect the environment or virtually adopting a red panda can make a difference.
32. What makes it difficult to count wild red pandas?
A. They frequently move from different habitats.
B. They live in deep forests with little human access.
C. Their numbers are decreasing too quickly to track.
D. Their populations spread across different regions.
33. What does the underlined word “captious” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Greedy. B. Picky. C. Careless. D. Generous.
34. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A The impact of red pandas’ issues. B. The difficulty in protecting red pandas.
C. The causes for red pandas’ endangerment. D. The situation of the habitats of red pandas.
35. Which is one way to protect red pandas?
A. Adopting a red panda from the WWF. B. Encouraging locals to protect the environment.
C. Breeding them in zoos for future release. D. Stopping all human activities in their habitats.

Leo and his friends all lived on the same street. They’d meet on the sidewalk daily and walk towards the park, where they’d spend the afternoon playing basketball.
During one winter, Leo noticed that of all the houses on the block, there was one with a messy, dirty yard that looked unattended. Leo had always been a tidy person, so passing by the house always made him uncomfortable.
One day, after all the snow had melted and the trees were starting to bloom just in time for spring, Leo couldn’t help but stare at his neighbor’s messy yard a little longer. The melted snow showed all the buried leaves, twigs from fall, and other trash.
“You guys go ahead,” Leo told his friends while walking to the park. “I really can’t stand seeing this yard dirty,” he said. Hearing this, his friends laughed at him. “Are you going to skip basketball to clean a yard that isn’t even yours?” one of them asked. “I can’t take it anymore; this yard is so dirty that it ruins the appearance of our neighborhood. I’ll catch up with you all later,” Leo insisted.
When Leo’s friends left, Leo quickly got to work. He went back home and filled his wagon (小推车) with the tools he needed. It took Leo the entire afternoon to clear the yard. He scraped the melting snow out of the pathway and swept the leaves from the ground. He also trimmed (修剪) the bushes and left them as neat as he could.
When he finished, Leo hesitated to ring the doorbell and inform his neighbor that he had cleaned the yard. However, he realized that he hadn’t seen his neighbor in ages and didn’t want to intrude (打扰). After all, he knew that an old lady in a wheelchair lived there alone, with a caregiver visiting her every other day.

Tourists from all over the world go there and exchange cultural experiences. Confucius and many famous people have been there. All in all, it’s really worth a visit.
W: OK. I’ll go there if I get a chance.

M: OK. I’d like to help you. Go ahead, please.
W: Thanks. How often do you take a bus, every day, once a week, twice a week, or something else?
M: I go to school by bus. So it’s usually twice daily.
W: I see. Could you rate its service? If 1 is poor, 2 is not bad, and 3 is very good, which number would you choose?
M: I would say 2. The drivers are nice. The buses are clean and the seats are comfortable, but it’s sometimes unreliable. There should be a bus every ten minutes. But yesterday morning, I waited almost twenty minutes before the bus came, and I was almost late for school.
W: Oh, that’s too bad. Do you have suggestions for the bus company?
M: Try to have the buses arrive on time, of course, and um, there can be a map on the bus. As you know, it can help some passengers find their own stops accurately to get off.
W: Thank you very much for your help.
M: You are welcome.

24. How did the author get the mosquito net?

A. To borrow a tool. B. To talk to his family.
C. To borrow money. D. To ask someone to do housework.
26. What did the author’s father suggest when realizing the drill might hit iron?

As we reflect on the interaction between baseball and economic crises, from the Great Recession to today’s economic landscape, it becomes clear that the sport stands as a remarkable proof to adaptation and cultural permanence.

A. The impact of red pandas’ issues.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Due to their fragmented (分散的) populations, obtaining an accurate count is challenging, but the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that fewer than 10,000 remain in the wild. (由于它们的种群分散,要获得准确的数量是很有挑战性的,但世界自然基金会(WWF)估计,目前野生的小熊猫不到1万只。)”可知,野生小熊猫的数量很难统计是因为它们的种群分布在不同的地区。故选D。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“only dine on the nutrient-rich tips of the leaves and the tasty, tender shoots. (只吃营养丰富的叶尖和美味嫩嫩的嫩芽。)”可知,小熊猫只吃营养丰富的叶尖和美味嫩嫩的嫩芽,即它们对食物很挑剔,由此可知,captious意为“挑剔的”。故选B。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Unfortunately, finding enough bamboo has become increasingly difficult as red pandas’ habitats continue to shrink. Human activities such as deforestation for housing, farming, and mining have led to significant habitat loss. Additionally, livestock (家畜) in forests competes with red pandas for bamboo. Natural disasters, including landslides, floods, and heavy snow, have further damaged their habitats. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that hunting is increasing, with red pandas being killed for their fur and meat. Some hunters even capture and sell them as illegal pets.
根据最后一段“By supporting conservation efforts, individuals can help ensure a future for these endangered animals. Promising to protect the environment or virtually adopting a red panda can make a difference. (通过支持保护工作,个人可以帮助确保这些濒危动物的未来。承诺保护环境或虚拟收养一只小熊猫都能带来改变。)”可知,保护小熊猫的方法是鼓励当地人保护环境。故选B。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next morning, the old woman, Abigail, opened her door with delight. She was amazed to see her yard looking so clean and tidy. For a moment, she stood there in disbelief, eyes wide open. Then, she noticed a note Leo had left, explaining his actions. Touched by Leo’s kindness, Abigail decided to show her gratitude. She called her neighbors and told them what Leo had done. They were all impressed and proposed a special surprise for him.
When Abigail and her neighbors arrived at Leo’s house, Leo was still asleep. They quietly set up a small party in his front yard. There were colorful balloons, a big banner that read “Thank You, Leo!”, and a table filled with delicious treats. As the sun peeked through the curtains, Leo woke up to the sound of laughter and chatter. Rubbing his eyes, he walked outside and was completely stunned. Abigail rolled forward in her wheelchair, a big smile on her face, and thanked him sincerely. The neighbors clapped and cheered. Leo blushed, realizing that a simple act of kindness could bring so much warmth and connection to the community.
