People often react strangely to the 10-year age gap between my kids. Some strangers ask if they’ re from the same marriage or if the younger was an “accident”. Some joke we’ re “starting over” late. Maybe we are — but we’ re perfectly happy with our choice.
Like any family, we face challenges. My tween needs homework help during her brother’s bath time. Sometimes she has sports events and parties while he stays home sick, needing care. She enjoys patterns and graphic novels; he chews books and throws toys. They won’t spend mornings building Legos together like same-aged siblings (兄弟姐妹) might.
Yet these differences feel manageable. If schedules clash, my fifth grader waits or solves problems herself. Though their meals differ, we always eat together. While their skills show the age gap most clearly, this actually benefits them both.
Despite the decade between them, they share toys and activities. When she plays the piano, he sings beside her. When she draws, he scribbles(涂鸦) nearby. The little one learns from his “expert” big sister, while she enjoys his constant admiration — to him, she’ s practically the sun itself.
Last week at a berry farm, my daughter raced ahead with cousins. Her brother kept stuffing berries into his cheeks, ignoring my calls. “Get Nic!” I told her. Without turning, she yelled “Come!” He instantly dropped his fruit and ran after her.
Though still awkward, he comforts her when she’s upset, climbing into her lap for hugs.
When she’s bored, he brings yummy cookies and candies — gifts filled with pure love no age gap can erase.
No parent-child bond matches the unique connection between siblings. Others might question our family, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
4. The underlined word “clash” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .
A. Limit. B. Disagree. C. Approve. D. Match.
5. Which activity may the siblings NOT share according to the text?
A. Reading children’s books together. B. Cooperating on a musical performance.
C. Engaging in artistic creation side by side. D. Sharing snacks during emotional moments.
6. What message does the last paragraph convey?
A. Children are raised according to their ages.
B. Social opinions influence parenting strategies.
C. Sibling connections go beyond age differences.
D. Parent-child relationships require more attention.
7. What is the mother’s attitude towards the age gap between her children?
A. Negative. B. Indifferent. C. Worried. D. Positive.

While everyone debates China’s DeepSeek R1 AI model, there’s something many miss: To youngAmericans like me, DeepSeek isn’t just impressive — it’s actually cool. All of them don’t love the Chinese government, but they find Chinese internet culture fresh and exciting.
Why? First, China’s internet really offers unique experiences and Chinese apps show growing creativity. I don’t use TikTok much myself, but its energy beats any US video platform. The company claims over half of Americans actively use it.
When TikTok faced legal issues this month American teens didn’t turn to European choices.
They rushed to a Chinese app called RedNote (Xiaohongshu). With 300 million Chinese users, this platform recently became popular in America too. The app mixes Chinese text with fashion photos and funny animal pictures for young people from both countries to exchange tips there — like how to make perfect steamed eggs.
DeepSeek itself stands out among AI chatbots. Besides its technical skills and low cost, it has personality. Its responses can be playful or childlike for us — it even rewrote John Milton’ s Paradise Lost as an AI-generated original story! This week it became Apple’s top downloaded app.
Former generations found Europe culturally“cool”, but that appeal faded. Now China stands as America’s only true equal in both economy and global impact. Though our cultures differ greatly, both nations share features like openness and business energy. Having visited China 11 times, I’ ve seen how its talent and resources create online experiences that attract Americans.
People focus too much on DeepSeek’ s technical advance and miss the bigger picture: China isn’t just catching up technologically, but culturally too. Their internet world feels alive in ways that connect with young Americans eager for something new.
8. What can be inferred from the first few paragraphs?
A. American youth reject native cultural influences.
B. Young Americans don’t like China’s political system.
C. Cultural value deserves more attention than technical debates.
D. DeepSeek’s popularity mainly comes from the official support.
9. What do RedNote and DeepSeek have in common?
A. Both face legal challenges in the US market.
B. They mainly target younger generation users.
C. Both have won over European technology companies.
D. They combine elements of technology and youth’s taste.
10. Why does the author talk about his 11 trips to China?
A. To make the readers feel closer.
B. To make his ideas more believable.
C To show his familiarity with China.
D. To compare China’s past and present.
11. Which of the following ideas might the author agree with?
A. China’s cultural power is growing with technical advance.
B. AI should value creative features more than technical skills.
C. American youth will stop using European cultural products.
D. TikTok’ s success proves Chinese apps will beat Western ones.

Music has been a faithful companion to people since ancient times. From the rhythmic beats of ancient drums to the complex musical pieces of modern times, it has the power to stir emotions, create memories, and even affect our physical well-being. But what exactly makes music so charming?
Sound is the basis of music. Our ears sense sound as vibrations (振动) in the air. When a musician plays a guitar, for example, the strings vibrate. These vibrations travel through the air as sound waves and reach our ears. The frequency of these sound waves determines the pitch (音高) of the note. High-frequency waves produce high-pitched sounds, like the sound of a bell, while low-frequency waves create low-pitched sounds, similar to the deep sound of a bass drum.
Harmony, another essential element, happens when several notes are played at the same time. Certain combinations of notes sound pleasant to our ears, creating harmony. This is because these combinations have a simple mathematical relationship between their frequencies. For instance, when a note and its octave (八度音阶) are played together, the frequency of the octave is exactly twice that of the original note. This harmonious combination is pleasing to most listeners.
Music also has a great impact on our emotions. A major key often excites feelings of happiness and optimism, while a minor key can create a sense of sadness or depression. Fast-paced music can make us full of energy, getting our hearts pumping and our feet tapping. In comparison, slow-paced music can calm us down, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Moreover, research has shown that music can affect our physical health. Listening to music can lower blood pressure, reduce pain, and improve sleep quality. For example, patients in a hospital setting who listen to calming music often report less discomfort during medical procedures.
The next time you find yourself humming along to a tune or moved to tears by a piece of music, remember the science behind this magical art form.
12. According to the passage, what is responsible for the pitch of a note?
A. The size of the musical instrument.
B. The frequency of the sound waves.
C. The material of the strings on the instrument.
D. The force with which the instrument is played.
13. Why does the author mention the mathematical relationship?
A. To explore why certain combinations of notes sound satisfying to our ears.
B. To suggest that musicians need a strong background in mathematics.
C. To stress the complexity of creating harmonious music.
D. To show that music is more of a scientific concept than an art form.
14. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. People’s emotional states can change the way they sense music.
B. Music can be used as a tool to control people’s emotions.
C. Our emotional response to music is related to its specific elements.
D. Composers create music mainly to stir certain emotions.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Musical development connects with scientific advances.
B. Understanding music’s science reveals its influence.
C. Music’s emotional impact matters more than physical benefits.
D. Ancient music laid modern understanding’s foundation.

I clearly remember the day. I was ten when Mom and I boarded the Antarctic cruise ship. To tell the truth, I never knew how wonderful Chinese medicine was. The crew greeted us with false smiles, and it was clear they didn’t really care. Mom saw I was uncomfortable and patted my head gently, telling me not to worry.
During the trip, Mom and I often sat in a corner of the dining hall, reading old medical books. Our daily doings attracted a couple’s attention. The husband was a soldier and couldn’t walk; he had to use a wheelchair. One afternoon, the wife pointed to the badge (徽章) on Mom’s coat and asked curiously what it was about. “This shows our family’s long-standing tradition of Chinese medicine. Mom is a Chinese medicine teacher,” I said. They looked at each other, surprised because it was the first time they’d seen a Chinese doctor.
Then we met in the following days and I knew the husband was called Mark and Emma was his wife. Mark told us his sad story about how his legs got hurt in the war. Mom offered to try acupuncture (针灸) on him. At first, he laughed sadly. He said even doctors from Harvard couldn’t help him. But Emma told him to give it a try. “Darling, could it get any worse than it is now? So why not give it a shot? Remember we first met at a ball ten years ago?” With his wife’s encouragement, he agreed and murmured, “Valentine’ s Day is only a week away”. Mom put the needles in carefully. Seconds passed slowly. Suddenly, he shouted, “I can feel something! It’s like an electric feeling in my legs!” First, a waiter rushed in, his eyes wide with curiosity. Soon, two passengers came in too, and before long, a small crowd had gathered, watching nervously. As Mom put more and more needles in, it felt like time stopped.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

4 The underlined word “clash” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .
A. Limit. B. Disagree. C. Approve. D. Match.
C. Worried. D. Positive.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D
根据第三段划线词之后“my fifth grader waits or solves problems herself. (我五年级的孩子要么等待,要么自己解决问题)”可知,我五年级的孩子会等待或者自己解决问题,这样的时候应该是两个孩子的日程安排出现了分歧。由此可知,划线词clash与B项disagree(有分歧)意思相近,故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When she plays the piano, he singsbeside her. When she draws, he scribbles (涂鸦) nearby. (当她弹钢琴时,他就在她旁边唱歌。当她画画时,他在附近乱画)”以及倒数第二段“When she’s bored, he brings yummy cookies and candies — gifts filled with pure love no age gap can erase.(当她无聊的时候,他会带来美味的饼干和糖果——这些礼物充满了纯真的爱,没有年龄差距可以抹去)”可知,他们没有一起读儿童读物,故选A项。
根据最后一段“No parent-child bond matches the unique connection between siblings. Others might question our family, but I wouldn’t change a thing.(任何亲子关系都比不上兄弟姐妹之间的独特联系。其他人可能会质疑我们的家庭,但我不会改变任何事情)”可推知,最后一段想要告诉我们的是兄弟姐妹之间的关系是独特的,超越了年龄的差异,故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“No parent-child bondmatches the unique connection between siblings. (没有亲子关系能比得上兄弟姐妹之间的独特关系)”可知,这位母亲认为兄弟姐妹之间的关系是独特的。由此推知,她对对孩子之间的年龄差距持积极的态度。故选D。

When TikTok faced legal issues this month, American teens didn’t turn to European choices.
C. To show his familiarity with China.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

All of them don’t love the Chinese government, but they find Chinese internet culture fresh and exciting.( 当每个人都在争论中国的DeepSeek R1人工智能模型时,有很多人忽略了一点:对于像我这样的年轻美国人来说,DeepSeek不仅令人印象深刻,而且实际上很酷。
根据第四段“They rushed to a Chinese app called RedNote (Xiaohongshu). With 300 million Chinese users, this platform recently became popular in America too. The app mixes Chinese text with fashion photos and funny animal pictures for young people from both countries to exchange tips there — like how to make perfect steamed eggs.(他们冲向一款名为RedNote(小红书)的中国应用。这个拥有3亿中国用户的平台最近在美国也很流行。该应用程序将中文文字与时尚图片和有趣的动物图片混合在一起,供两国年轻人在那里交流技巧,比如如何制作完美的蒸蛋。)”以及第五段中“DeepSeek itself stands out among AI chatbots. Besides its technical skills and low cost, it has personality. Its responses can be playful or childlike for us — it even rewrote John Milton’ s Paradise Lost as an AI-generated original story!( DeepSeek本身在人工智能聊天机器人中脱颖而出。
根据倒数第二段“Former generations found Europe culturally “cool”, but that appeal faded. Now China stands as America’s only true equal in both economy and global impact. Though our cultures differ greatly, both nations share features like openness and business energy. Having visited China 11 times, I’ve seen how its talent and resources create online experiences that attract Americans.( 前几代人觉得欧洲在文化上很“酷”,但这种吸引力逐渐消退。
根据最后一段“People focus too much on DeepSeek’ s technical advance and miss the bigger picture: China isn’t just catching up technologically, but culturally too. Their internet world feels alive in ways that connect with young Americans eager for something new.( 人们过于关注DeepSeek的技术进步,而忽略了更大的图景:中国不仅在技术上迎头赶上,而且在文化上也迎头赶上。他们的网络世界充满活力,与渴望新鲜事物的美国年轻人联系在一起。)”可推知,作者可能会同意的观点是“中国的文化力量随着技术的进步而增长。”故选A项。
D

注意:

Paragraph 2:
Valentine’s Day was soon coming when Mark met everyone on the deck (甲板).
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, everyone was shocked to see Mark nearly stand up from his wheelchair by himself. His legs trembled slightly, but the determination in his eyes shone brightly. The once-indifferent crew members whispered in disbelief, their fake smiles replaced by genuine amazement. Mom continued the acupuncture sessions daily, and each time, Mark’s progress grew more noticeable. By the third day, he managed to take a few shaky steps with Emma’s support. Passengers gathered around, clapping and cheering, their earlier doubts melting into admiration. Even the ship’s doctor approached Mom, humbly asking about Chinese medicine. Mark’s voice cracked as he thanked Mom, “You’ve given me hope I thought was lost forever.”
Paragraph 2:
Valentine’s Day was soon coming when Mark met everyone on the deck. The evening sun painted the sky in warm hues as he stood confidently, holding a bouquet for Emma. With a deep breath, he took her hand and whispered, “May I have this dance?” The music began, and slowly, they swayed — a dance ten years in the making. Tears glistened in Emma’s eyes as the crowd watched in silent awe. When the song ended, Mark turned to Mom and bowed deeply. “Your needles didn’t just heal my legs,” he said, “they reignited my life.” That night, under the Antarctic stars, Chinese medicine was no longer a mystery but a miracle to all aboard.
