So Song Zhongqian and his team developed a new robot that touches plants using an approach inspired by human skin, with structures working together in a hierarchical (分层的) way to gain information through touch. When an electrode in the robot makes contact with a leaf, the device learns about the plant by measuring several properties. The properties include the amount of charge that can be stored at a given voltage (电压), how difficult it is for the electrical current to move through the leaf, and the contact force as the robot grasps the leaf. Next, these data are processed in order to classify the plant, since different data for each measurement relate to different plant species and stages of growth. “The robot has certain demerits, despite the fact that it shows vast potential applications in fields ranging from ecological studies to plant disease detection,” says Song. For example, the device is not yet capable enough to consistently identify types of plants with complicated structures like needle-like leaves. This could be addressed by improving the design of the robot’s electrode. The researchers plan to expand more plants the robot can recognize by collecting data from a wider variety of species, boosting the plant species database they use. Eventually, farmers and agricultural researchers could use the robot to monitor the health and growth of crops and to make tailored decisions about how much water and nutrition to give their plants and how to approach the control of annoying insects. 8. That’s because a person who cares deeply about others can also suffer from decision fatigue when advising others, presenting the potential for bad advice. “For example, research has found that nurses who are particularly high in sympathy experience career burnout more often than nurses who are less sympathetic,” Polman says. Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process, it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good. “People with decision fatigue will likely choose to go with the current situation, while a change in the course of action can sometimes lead to a positive outcome.” he says. “That’s not to say that risk is always good, but it is related to taking action while decision fatigue certainly leads to inaction.” 12.
