Early in the year, we rescued a shy, hurt dog named benny. Benny was more than just another rescued animal. He became a symbol of hope and the power of love for us. As we brought him back to health, we all realized there was something special about this dog. It's hard to put into words that feeling of connection with an animal. All of us put in extra care for penny as he trusted us more. He became more playful and smarter. And would hague his tail. He took training well, too. Eventually, when he saw a Young couple come to find a dog, any waged is tail like never before. The couple loved him at first sight and adopted him on their first visit. Every so often, they would contact and send photos of him. I know as a volunteer, I am helping not just animals, but people. This experience has given me lessons on sympathy and t work. IT gives me great joy to know that I really do make a difference. Volunteering here isn't just about the animals, it's about bringing us together on two legs or four. We're all stronger together. I encourage all of you to consider joining the team in some way. Today, as I reflect on my first year of volunteering at the local animal shelter, I want to share a story that touched my heart. I was always the type of individual who hated being called on in class. It was not due to a lack of knowledge — I was, in fact, quite good at grasping the material. Rather, I disliked the spotlight being cast upon me. Moreover, I had few friends, and being overweight since childhood often made me the target of jokes.
I’ve found a way to change all that. It began when a teacher suggested that I try out for the basketball team. Initially, I didn’t take the idea seriously at all. Being chubby (圆胖的), I just knew that I’d only embarrass myself. But because the teacher — a favorite with me — kept insisting I “go for it”, I decided to give it a try.
When I first started attending the practice sessions, I really didn’t have a good handle on the game of basketball. To be honest, the rules of the game were a mystery to me. Luckily, I wasn’t the only one “new” to the game, so I resolved to do my best at each practice session. I was learning, and I was getting better even if it was little by little.
Then it became more fun and more motivating. I practiced and practiced. Pretty soon the competitive part of me was winning over my chubby-kid complex. I began to forget that I was chubby. I even discovered that my “size” wasn’t such a disadvantage at all; I could make a basket from right under the net and block at the same time!
Gaining self-confidence in playing inspired me to try out other things. I have gone from “hiding” myself to raising my hand. With my new and improved self-confidence come more praises, some from teachers, and some from teammates and classmates. But these days, they also come from the face in the mirror — which is the “person” whose comments I value most. Best of all, I’m learning to really believe in myself.
24. Why did the author dislike being asked in class?
A. He couldn’t figure out the answers. B. He felt uneasy about being noticed.

25. How did the author feel on hearing the teacher’s suggestion?
A. Uninterested. B. Misguided. C. Appreciative. D. Confused.
26. How did playing basketball benefit the author?
A. He dropped quite a bit of weight. B. He learned how to cooperate.
C. He developed a funny personality. D. He became sure of himself.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Unlocking Confidence with Teamwork B. The Secret to Competitive Sports Spirit
C. A Chubby Kid’s Journey of Growth D. The Lifelong Influence of a Teacher

Sight, hearing, “mental” processing... many robots already have all these properties, but touch was one of the debts of the robotic world. A team of Chinese experts has developed a new robot that is capable of touching leaves of plants with an electrode (电极)。
Rather than make physical contact with a plant, existing devices obtain relatively limited information using visual approaches, which are easily influenced by factors such as lighting conditions. So Song Zhongqian and his team developed a new robot that touches plants using an approach inspired by human skin, with structures working together in a hierarchical (分层的) way to gain information through touch.
When an electrode in the robot makes contact with a leaf, the device learns about the plant by measuring several properties. The properties include the amount of charge that can be stored at a given voltage (电压), how difficult it is for the electrical current to move through the leaf, and the contact force as the robot grasps the leaf. Next, these data are processed in order to classify the plant, since different data for each measurement relate to different plant species and stages of growth.
“The robot has certain demerits, despite the fact that it shows vast potential applications in fields ranging from ecological studies to plant disease detection,” says Song. For example, the device is not yet capable enough to consistently identify types of plants with complicated structures like needle-like leaves. This could be addressed by improving the design of the robot’s electrode.
The researchers plan to expand more plants the robot can recognize by collecting data from a wider variety of species, boosting the plant species database they use. Eventually, farmers and agricultural researchers could use the robot to monitor the health and growth of crops and to make tailored decisions about how much water and nutrition to give their plants and how to approach the control of annoying insects.
28. How is the new robot different from existing devices?
A. It adopts visual technology to recognize plants. B. It works under specific lighting conditions.
C. It collects physical information of plants. D. It uses the electrode to touch plants.
29. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. The process of the robot identifying plants. B. The uniqueness of plants’ electrical properties.
C. The complexity of gathering plants’ properties. D. The critical stages during plants’ growing period.
30. What does the underlined word “demerits” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Significance. B. Flexibility. C. Limitations. D. Functions.
31. How will the robot help farmers and agricultural researchers in the future?
A. By replacing human labor in agriculture. B. By developing various plant species.
C. By discovering unidentified insects. D. By facilitating crop management.
D
If you’ve ever found yourself scratching (挠) your head over a decision when the answer is obvious, now there’s a scientific reason behind it. “The problem is ‘decision fatigue’ — a psychological phenomenon that influences the quality of your choices after a long day of decision-making, causing indecision or poor choices,” says Evan Polman, assistant professor of marketing at the Wisconsin School of Business.
Physicians who have been on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (开抗生素) to patients when it’s unwise to do so. “Probably it’s because it’s simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further,” Polman says.
But interestingly, decision fatigue won’t be an issue when you’re making choices on another’s behalf. By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue. It’s as if there’s something fun and relieving about making someone else’s choice.
Getting the best advice, however, will rely on the personality of your adviser. Surprisingly, the best person to ask is someone relatively cool-headed to your circumstances; someone who doubts others and thinks highly of themselves. That’s because a person who cares deeply about others can also suffer from decision fatigue when advising others, presenting the potential for bad advice. “For example, research has found that nurses who are particularly high in sympathy experience career burnout more often than nurses who are less sympathetic,” Polman says.
Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process, it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good. “People with decision fatigue will likely choose to go with the current situation, while a change in the course of action can sometimes lead to a positive outcome.” he says. “That’s not to say that risk is always good, but it is related to taking action while decision fatigue certainly leads to inaction.”
32. Which of the following is an example of decision fatigue?
A. A lawyer makes weaker judgments after a day of cases.
B. A manager approves a project without thorough review.
C. A chef follows the usual recipe to make an evening meal.
D. A physician advises a patient to drink water after check-up.
33. When do people experience less decision fatigue?
A. When they take decision shortcuts. B. When they guide others’ decisions.
C. When they encounter major choices. D. When they have advisers to turn to.
34 What makes a better adviser according to the text?
A. Experience in giving advice. B. Deep sympathy for others.
C. Particular nursing professions. D. Less emotional involvement.
35. What does Polman say about taking risks in decision-making?
A. It often ends in regret. B. It promotes taking action.
C. It encourages creativity. D. It causes serious consequences.

Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is an essential precondition. Bertrand Russell, a British philosopher, even claimed that no intelligent thinking can take place without language. ___36___ It found that language and thought are two distinct entities (实体), working in separate parts of the brain. They are, in short, far more independent than we imagined.
The researchers explored the language-thought relationship through two research approaches. ___37___ They asked these people to solve math problems or perform social reasoning tests as long as the instructions were non-verbal. However, all the subjects could still complete complex tasks.
The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain’s language regions were mostly inactive during such activities. ___38___
So, if language isn’t necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko, one of the study’s authors, has found the answer. ___39___ Most things we have learned about the world are through language. By being able to share complex information through language, humans have gained an evolutionary advantage in the world.
___40___ For example, the English sentence “he rang the doorbell” is usually phrased as “the doorbell rang” in Japanese. As a result, English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for the action than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.
A. In other words we can think without words.
B. How does language influence our daily decisions?
C. Language serves mainly as a tool for communication.
D. However, a recent study in Nature suggests otherwise.
E. First, they studied patients suffering from language loss.
F. Human culture is the foundation on which all knowledge is built.
G. While language doesn’t generate thoughts, it can influence how we think.

Squeaky wasn’t expected to do much around the house, but she was responsible for looking after her sister Louise, who was intellectually disabled. People in their Harlem neighborhood often made fun of Louise, but Squeaky didn’t hesitate to stand up for her. As Squeaky was an incredibly fast runner, she could just run away if things got too heated. In fact, Squeak y won many races she competed in, sometimes losing to her classmate and friend, Gretchen. These days, Squeaky and Gretchen were talking about who of them would win in the coming May Day race.
Squeaky often ran around the neighborhood, training for races and performing breathing exercises, and Louise usually went together. Louise often caused trouble in public, drawing the anger of neighbors to whom Squeaky must apologize. But Squeaky didn’t mind as long as Louise didn’t interfere (干扰) with her training.
Presently, Squeaky was practicing running in the neighborhood with Louise when she spotted Gretchen running towards them. When they came close, they all stopped. Gretchen looked at Louise in curiosity, which was taken as a provocation by Squeaky, who stepped forward in defense. Gretchen stepped back and smiled kindly.Relieved, Squeaky introduced Louise to Gretchen and explained why she was defensive.
Gretchen laughed, saying she was curious because she was surprised that Louise should be able to run as fast as Squeaky. “Is she also training for the May Day race?” Gretchen asked.
Squeaky’s eyes lit up. “Why haven’t I ever thought of this?” she thought. Gretchen’s words reminded her of an idea she had never thought of. “I decide to quit running and coach Louise instead. I have many awards, but Louise has nothing,” she told Gretchen. Gretchen was almost touched to tears by Squeaky’s consideration for her sister. “Can I work together with you?” Gretchen asked with enthusiasm. The two friends looked at each other in agreement.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】
The coaching was no easy job. Gretchen played the role of the referee who fired the gun. Squeaky ran together with Louise. To make the race like a real one, Gretchen even asked some of her friends to cheer them on the way and some others to play the role of other runners. The training became an uplifting scene in the neighborhood. Now even the neighbors who used to get annoyed by Louise were excited to join the cheering crowd. Louise’s progress was evident and she ran even faster than Squeaky and she learned to run without Squeaky’s company.
May Day finally arrived. Louise was standing at the starting line of the 50-yard dash with other runners. The gun went off, and Louise started to run. She ran really fast like an arrow that leaves the string. With more and more people joining the cheering crowd, the race became the most attractive event of the May Day celebrations. Louise won the race as expected. She was awarded a medal and Squeaky had never seen her happier. Squeaky and Gretchen threw themselves to Louise feeling proud that they had discovered her running potential.
