I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her.
So when I moved to New York and got depressed, I did the only thing I could think of. I wrote those same kinds of letters like my mother for strangers, and tucked them all over the city: in cafés, in libraries, and even in the subway. I blogged about those letters and promised if asked for a hand-written letter, I would write one.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters.
Today I run a global organization fueled by those trips to the mailbox. It is a miracle. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people brought up in a paperless world where some best conversations happen on a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly in twitter.
Therefore, I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.” And a man, who had decided to take his life, slept safely with a stack of letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.
These stories convince me that letter-writing will never need to be about efficiency, because it is an art now, all of it: the signing, the scripting, the mailing.
4. What did the author share regarding her experience in college?
A. Her care for her family. B. Her attachment to letters.
C. Her love for writing letters. D. Her consistency in writing.
5. What was the purpose of her launching the act?
A. To advocate the paperless lifestyle. B. To provide emotional assistance with letters.
C. To enhance her communication skills. D. To provide professional aid.
6. Why is the mail crate called “a magical icebreaker”?
A. It cures people of mental disorder. B. It empowers people to be brave.
C. It serves as a conversation starter. D. It has magic power to melt ice.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Family Letters Are Priceless. B. Love for Writing Never Declines.
C. Written Letters Strengthens Efficiency. D. World Needs More Love Letters.
B 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第一段中“I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her. (我是大学里唯一一个有理由去邮箱的孩子,因为我母亲从不相信电子邮件、脸书、短信或手机。我真的在邮箱旁等着收到她寄来的能给予我最温暖慰藉的信。)”可知,作者讲述了自己在大学时期待收到母亲的信的事情,分享了她对信件的依赖。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22 year old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. (一夜之间,我的收件箱成了伤心的港湾——萨克拉门托的一位单身母亲、堪萨斯州一个被欺负的女孩、一位22岁的移民,都请求我给他们写信,给他们一个在邮箱旁等待的理由。)”可知,很多人处于伤心或困境中,希望作者写信给他们,由此可推断作者发起这个活动的目的是通过信件为他人提供情感上的帮助。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Therefore, I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.” (因此,这些天我一直带着这个邮件箱,它是一个神奇的破冰器。所以我可以向完全陌生的人讲述一个女人的故事,她的丈夫因战争受到精神创伤,她在房子里到处留下情书,上面写着:“回到我身边。”)”可知,这个大木箱能让作者和陌生人开启关于信件故事的交流,所以,它被称为“神奇的破冰者”是因为它可以作为开启对话的契机。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第三段中“And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters. (我就是这样发起了“世界需要更多情书”这个活动。)”可知,文章主要围绕作者发起的“世界需要更多情书”活动展开,强调信件传递情感、给予慰藉的作用,D项“世界需要更多情书”能概括文章主旨,最适合做文章标题。故选D项。
C
We all know cacti (仙人掌) store water — but to survive, they also adjust their flower positions to gain more sunlight or shade, and so much more. Scientists have been copying the resilient plants’ methods to help engineer our future.
One of the most exciting advancements involves Copiapoa, a genus of cacti with at least 32 species found in the coastal Atacama Desert, the driest nonpolar desert on Earth. These cacti, typically five to six inches wide, can form gray-green bushes that spread out over an area otherwise empty of vegetation.
Documented by many scientists, Copiapoas probably survive by “drinking” the salty fog that sweeps in from the sea every morning, as well as the dew — tiny bits of water — that forms on their spines (尖刺) and skin. This has inspired researcher Tegwen Malik from Swansea University to think about whether the dew-colleting process might be reproduced in metal structures.
Specifically, Malik took a close look at the one-and-a-quarter-inch spines of Copiapoas and found that their surface has a series of tiny channels that broaden at the base. “This creates a surface roughness that enables dewdrops to move along them even against gravity,” she says.
Starting in 2013, she set out to re-create that structure by engineering a flat metal reproduction of the stems and spines of the Copiapoa, which she began testing under a series of different temperatures and humidities. After several years of experiments — testing indoor and outdoor conditions, and with various cooling methods — she finally got it to work. In 2023, Malik published a study showing that the irregular surface was 8 percent more efficient at harvesting dew than a flat sheet used as a baseline.
Malik imagines desert homes with water-collecting features to provide clean water in dry regions. “The easiest way could be to place dew-harvesting surfaces on roofs, but you could also have these structures in tents in the desert,” she says. “We truly have hidden treasures in the Copiapoa, and we are only just learning some of their secrets.”
8. What does the underlined word “resilient” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Highly adaptable to different soils. B. Able to grow quickly and efficiently
C. Resistant to diseases and harmful insects. D. Capable of surviving difficult conditions
9. What drove Tegwen Malik to study Copiapoas?
A. Their metal-like surface. B. Their mechanism to gather water.
C. Their typical appearance D. Their ability to form water drops.
10. What was the main focus of Malik’s experiment with the Copiapoa?
A. Recreating a flat metal copy of it B. Testing if its metal copy would work
C. Seeing how it survives various climates. D. Finding the most efficient cooling method for it.
11. How may Malik’s metal structure be applied?
A. To secure water supply in dry areas. B. To clean salty water in desert homes.
C. To enable desert explorers to travel light. D. To improve ways to discover hidden treasures.
D 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“Weallknow cacti (仙人掌) store water-but to surive, they also adjust their flower positions to gain more sunlight or shade, andso much more. Scientists have been copying the resilient plants’ methods to help engineer our future. (我们都知道仙人掌能储存水分,但为了生存,它们还会调整花朵的位置以获得更多阳光或阴凉,诸如此类还有很多。科学家们一直在模仿这些resilient的植物的方法,以帮助设计我们的未来)”可知,划线词修饰的plants指代Weallknow cacti (仙人掌),这种植物能在干旱的沙漠中生存下来,所以推断resilient的意思是“能在困难环境中生存下来的”。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Documented by many scientists, Copiapoas probably survive by “drinking” the salty fog that sweeps in from the sea every morning, as well as the dew — tiny bits of water — that forms on their spines (尖刺) and skin. This has inspired researcher Tegwen Malik from Swansea University to think about whether the dew-collecting process might be reproduced in metal structures. (许多科学家记录到,Copiapoas可能通过“饮用”每天早晨从海上席卷而来的咸雾,以及在其尖刺和皮肤上形成的露水——微小的水滴——来生存。这启发了来自斯旺西大学的研究者Tegwen Malik思考露水收集过程是否可以在金属结构中重现)”可知,是仙人掌收集水分的机制启发了Tegwen Malik去研究它。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Starting in 2013, she set out to re-create that structure by engineering a flat metal reproduction of the stems and spines of the Copiapoa, which she began testing under a series of different temperatures and humidities. (从2013年开始,她开始通过制作Copiapoa茎和刺的平面金属复制品来重现这种结构,并在一系列不同的温度和湿度下开始测试)”以及“In 2023, Malik published a study showing that the irregular surface was 8 percent more efficient at harvesting dew than a flat sheet used as a baseline. (2023年,Malik发表了一项研究,研究表明,这种不规则表面收集露水的效率比用作基准的平面高8%)”可知,Malik关于Copiapoa的实验重点是测试它的金属复制品是否有效。故选B。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Malik imagines desert homes with water-collecting features to provide clean water in dry regions. (Malik设想沙漠中的房屋有集水功能,为干旱地区提供清洁水源)”可知,Malik的金属结构可能被应用于确保干旱地区的水供应。故选A。
D
Scientists have studied gossip defined as talking about someone not present for decades. That’s not surprising given the activity’s near universality in any social group, big or small. People in modern societies spend about an hour a day immersed in chin-wagging, one study reports. But investigators are now approaching this fixture of social life from a new perspective.
In past decades, researchers focused primarily on the damage arising from gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target — the person being talked about. Now, they have changed course by looking more at the benefits of gossip and the dynamics of a three-part network that involves a gossiper, a listener and a target.
So what, if anything, can be good about gossip? Whenever someone confides something to you about someone you both know — whether the information is positive, negative or neutral — it brings the two of you closer, creating a social bond. According to one study, it even increases your liking for the spreader of the information. Plus, it enforces group norms. For example, complaints about a co-worker who puts smelly banana peels in the paper trash are likely to get back to them and let them know that the conduct is not acceptable.
Another experiment was led by social psychologist Terence Cruz, then at Free University Amsterdam. Cruz and his team recruited 300 people in a community in the Netherlands and asked them to list 15 people with whom they had frequent contact. Four times each day for 10 days, the subjects were asked to report on any information that someone in their social network told them, or that they told someone, about a third person.
The experiment showed that the gossiper passed on true information when they had no conflict of interest with the target. When they had a rivalry or other conflict with the target, however, they were likelier to pass on things that were self-serving or absolutely false. Nevertheless, one of the most surprising results of gossip, Cruz says, is that it helps people better understand the behavior of others. For example, a co-worker shows up late every day, but if they learn through gossip that the offending colleague is in the middle of a divorce or the like, they are less likely to complain. Perhaps more importantly, they sympathize with the co-worker and feel motivated to help the miserable guy.
12. What is the new perspective investigators now adopt?
A. Analyze the new feature of social life. B. Focus on the benefits of chin-wagging.
C. Investigate the potential risks of gossip. D. Look at either the spreader or the target.
13. What impact might gossip have according to paragraph 3?
A. It fuels the popularity of the target. B. It betters the workplace environment.
C. It offends the privacy of co-workers. D. It enhances the overall social bond.
14. What does Cruz’s research find?
A. An average person contacts 15 people frequently.
B. Gossips tend to spread incorrect information.
C. One can never keep their privacy from colleagues.
D. Workplace relationships can benefit from gossip.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Bad Name, Not Necessarily Bad Thing B. Double-Edged Sword, Aid Plus Harm
C. The Bitter Truth about Chin-Wagging D. The Unsaid Intention behind Gossip
B 13. B 14. D 15. A

根据第二段“In past decades, researchers focused primarily on the damage arising from gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target — the person being talked about. Now, they have changed course by looking more at the benefits of gossip and the dynamics of a three-part network that involves a gossiper, a listener and a target.(在过去的几十年里,研究人员主要关注八卦带来的损害,并将焦点集中于八卦传播者或目标人物——即被谈论的人。现在,他们转变了研究方向,更多地关注八卦的好处以及涉及八卦传播者、听众和目标人物这三方网络的动态关系)”可知,研究者现在采用的新观点是关注八卦的好处。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Whenever someone confides something to you about someone you both know — whether the information is positive, negative or neutral — it brings the two of you closer, creating a social bond. According to one study, it even increases your liking for the spreader of the information. Plus, it enforces group norms. For example, complaints about a co-worker who puts smelly banana peels in the paper trash are likely to get back to them and let them know that the conduct is not acceptable.(每当有人向你吐露你们都认识的某个人的事情时——无论这些信息是积极的、消极的还是中性的——它都会拉近你们俩的距离,建立起一种社会纽带。根据一项研究,它甚至会增加你对信息传播者的喜爱。此外,它还强化了群体规范。例如,抱怨同事把有臭味的香蕉皮扔进废纸篓,可能会让他们知道这种行为是不可接受的)”可知,八卦能拉近双方距离,形成社交纽带,还能通过规范群体行为来改善环境,比如对同事不恰当行为的抱怨会让其明白行为不当,从而改善工作场所环境,故八卦可以改善工作环境。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Nevertheless, one of the most surprising results of gossip, Cruz says, is that it helps people better understand the behavior of others. For example, a co-worker shows up late every day, but if they learn through gossip that the offending colleague is in the middle of a divorce or the like, they are less likely to complain. Perhaps more importantly, they sympathize with the co-worker and feel motivated to help the miserable guy.(然而,克鲁兹说,八卦最令人惊讶的结果之一是,它能帮助人们更好地理解他人的行为。例如,一个同事每天都迟到,但如果他们通过八卦得知这个冒犯他的同事正在离婚或类似的事情中,他们就不太可能抱怨了。也许更重要的是,他们同情同事,并感到有动力去帮助这个可怜的家伙)”可知,克鲁兹的研究发现职场关系可以从八卦中获益。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“In past decades, researchers focused primarily on the damage arising from gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target — the person being talked about. While working together, we have the chance to have meaningful conversations, share experiences, and build memories(每当父母需要帮助时,我都很乐意帮忙。在一起做家务的过程中,我们有机会进行有意义的对话,分享经历,并留下美好的回忆)”可知,此处应是表达和家人一起做家务是一种乐趣。D选项“Actually, doing chores alongside my family can make them a joy.(实际上,和家人一起做家务可以让它们成为一种乐趣)”符合语境,起到了承上启下的作用,既承接了上文因为对家人的爱使做家务变得可以应对,又引出了下文和家人一起做家务的乐趣,故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据下文“Household chores mean learning how to manage responsibility and understand kids’ role, not to mention practicing discipline, time management, and selflessness. All these consequences would seem to tip the scales (天平) in favor of chores(家务意味着学习如何管理责任,理解孩子角色,更不用说培养自律、时间管理和无私精神了。所有这些结果似乎都倾向于支持做家务)”可知,此处应是强调做家务对个人成长的重要性。G选项“It also comes as no surprise that chores are important for personal growth.(家务对个人成长很重要,这一点也不足为奇)”符合语境,能够引出下文对做家务在个人成长方面意义的阐述,故选G项。

故填a。
故填is crafted。

故填that/which。
故填To complete。

I had always wanted a dog since young. My parents were against the idea, saying that taking care of a dog was a lifetime commitment.
On my tenth birthday, Father stepped into the house and announced, “Nancy, you have a new puppy!” I shouted in delight and ran towards Father, only to find it was a toy puppy. My face fell. I turned away. Father explained, “This is a ‘Think-It-Over’ puppy. You should try taking care of it before deciding about a real dog.”
The puppy did look like a real dog from a distance and it even had a dog smell. Inside its body was a computer programmed to make barking sounds. Father handed me a key, which could be stuck into its back to stop its barking. I accepted the puppy, which I named Friday since it was Friday that day.
That evening, my friends and I decided to take Friday to a dog café. It was freezing cold, so I wrapped it in a blanket as if it were a real dog. The computer inside could tell if someone treated it badly, like shaking or not caring for it, and I did not want that recorded.
Having waited in line, we finally got a table. The waiter, not knowing I was carrying a false puppy, asked attentively if I would need a basket with cushion. I told him, “Oh, it’s not a real puppy, but...” Before I could finish my sentence, he gave me an unpleasant look, turned and served other diners who were right there to play with the café’s dogs. I might have seemed unusual to him. During our meal, my friends and I received strange looks from the other dog owners in the café. We ignored them and continued with our own conversation.
After dinner, we went to a nearby shopping mall, where customers were selecting their favorites. My friends were looking at clothes, but I couldn’t. The puppy I was carrying was becoming increasingly heavy. Extremely tired of Friday, I put it down in a corner and just wandered around, seeking clothes I could try on.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Suddenly, Friday started to bark like a real dog.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The moment I got home, I handed Friday to Father, tears in eyes.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, Friday started to bark like a real dog. It barked so loudly as if protesting against my previous disrespect, which immediately attracted curious stares of the shoppers. Some even blamed me in annoyance for making the dog produce such a noise. Embarrassed and panicked, I was at a loss what to do. My friends came running to me and urged me to take out the key. Not until then did I think of the solution. The barking ceased but I was overwhelmed with tiredness and depression. With everyone watching, I picked up Friday with a blushing face, racing out of the mall.
The moment I got home, I handed Friday to Father, tears in eyes. “So Friday has upset you?” Father asked. Discouraged, I told him everything that had happened. Father listened quietly and said smilingly, “See why I gave you the ‘Think-It-Over’ puppy? Taking care of a real dog is even more challenging. You need to be responsible all the time.” I nodded, realizing I hadn’t been as committed as I thought. I wiped my tears, saying firmly, “Father, I’ll be ready for a real dog. Trust me.” From then on, I did what I could to take better care of Friday, learning how to be a responsible and capable pet owner.
①吠叫:bark/yap
②责备:blame/criticize
③催促:urge/press
①尴尬:embarrassed/awkward
②沮丧:discouraged/depressed

I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her.
So when I moved to New York and got depressed I did the only thing I could think of.

C Resistant to diseases and harmful insects.

13 What impact might gossip have according to paragraph 3?
