I grew up in a poor household and fought my way from bars in South Africa into offices here in Canada. My parents were teachers with modest salaries, but we could hardly make ends meet because of my dad's addiction to alcohol. My mom tried her best to love us and keep us fed.
At about 4 years old, I saw a smiling piggy bank at a flea market, which was sitting on a table among all kinds of second-band goods. Child as I was, somehow I had the thought that it was going to make things better and that's why I had to have it. Then for two years, I saved everything from my birthday money from my granny to leftover coins at the bar.
However, we smashed the piggy bank in the middle of a winter when our electricity had just been cut off again and the cupboard didn't have any food left. My mom didn't tell me to do it, but I volunteered. Even at roughly 6 years old, I had a strong sense of duty toward my family. It had enough money to put gas in the car and buy groceries, plus some candles for light.
It changed my life because it changed my attitude towards life. I suddenly believed my situation was temporary and that I was able to face any challenge and make my life better.
As an adult, I had a long-term dream of leaving South Africa. So in spring 2020, I packed up everything I could and moved to Canada. I worked my way up to be a senior salesman here, applying the skills of frugality(节俭) and persistence that my piggy taught me. I am proud to say that I am fighting for what I love and looking forward to whatever is next.

Last week, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres coined a new term. The time of global warming has ended, he announced, and the time of "global boiling" has arrived.
You can see why he said it. July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heatwaves are damaging the world's third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead.
But critics have strongly disagreed with the phrase. At one level, "global boiling" is clearly an overstatement, but "global warming" is now far too weak a description. Many climate scientists have pushed for the term "global heating" to be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as "climate crisis" haven t received enough attention. That's because many of us still feel we haven't seen this crisis with our own eyes.
But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and related events have struck many countries. Australia's Black Summer brought wildfires that burned an area the size of the United Kingdom. Germany suffered serious flooding in 2021. The 2022 flood in Pakistan flooded large parts of the country. China has seen both droughts and floods. Terrible droughts have hit the Horn of Africa for many years. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.
Critics of climate action often complain about what they see as the overuse of "crisis talk". If everything is a crisıs, nothing is a crisis.
When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he's not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he's hoping is to make people listen—and act—now we can see what climate change looks like.
Are there better phrases to describe this? Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: can you think up a brief, correct phrase to cover worsening local-and regional-scale(区域级的) droughts, fires, typhoons and floods; damage to crops and food safety; water shortages; existential threats to coral reefs and low-lying communities? You can see how hard it is.
28. What made Guterres use the phrase "global boiling"?
A. The reviews from critics.
B. The new scientific findings.
C. The present serious situation.
D. The future course of climate change.
29. Why did such phrases as "climate crısis" fail to attract our attention?
A. None of these phrases reflect the truth.
B. Fewer crises have happened in recent years.
C. Many phrases haven't been mentioned publicly.
D. Certain climate disasters haven't happened to us.
30. What does the author try to say by using "But that is changing"?
A. But climate crises are worsening.
8. But several crises will be solved.
C. But people will face food shortages.
D. But people are taking effective measures.
31. What does the author think of Guterres' saying "global boiling"?
A. It is beyond reality. B. It is just to scare people.
C. It is reasonably acceptable. D. It is just to comfort the public.
D
The rapid spread of AI has people wondering: Who's most likely to embrace AI in their daily lives? Many assume it's those who understand how AI works are most eager to adopt it. Surprisingly, our new research finds the opposite. People with less knowledge about AI are actually more open to using the technology. We call this difference in adoption tendency the "lower literacy-higher receptivity" link.
AI now performs tasks we once thought only humans could do. When AI creates a piece of art, writes a heartfelt response, or plays a musical instrument, it can feel almost magical—like it's crossing into human territory. Of course, AI doesn't actually possess human qualities. A chatbot might generate an empathetic(同感的) response, but it doesn't feel empathy. People with more technical knowledge about AI understand this. They know how algorithms(算法), training data, and computational models operate. This makes the technology less magical. On the other hand, those with less understanding may see AI as magical and awe-inspiring. We suggest this sense of magic makes them more open to using AI tools.
Our studies show this link is strongest for using AI tools in areas where people assocıate with human characteristics, like providing emotional support or counseling. When it comes to tasks that don't cause the same sense of humanlike qualities—such as analyzing test results—the pattern flips. People with higher AI literacy are more receptive to these uses because they focus on AI's efficiency, rather than any "magical" qualities.
Efforts to boost AI literacy might unintentionally dampen people's enthusiasm for using AI by making it seem less magical. This creates a tricky balance between helping people understand AI and keeping them open to its adoption. To make the most of AI's potential, businesses, educators and policymakers need to strike this balance. By understanding how perceptions of "magicalness" shape people s openness to AI, we can help develop new AI-based products and services that take the way people view AI into account, and help them understand the benefits and risks of AI.
And ideally, this will happen without causing a loss of the admiration that inspires many people to embrace this new technology.
32. Why do people with less AI knowledge find the technology appealing?
A. They think AI can truly feel emotions like humans.
B. They understand the algorithms behind AI better.
C. They focus on the efficiency of AI in various tasks.
D. They are attracted by the seemingly magical nature of AI.
33. In which area do people with higher AI literacy show more receptivity to AI?
A. Offering emotional support to others.
B. Creating artworks using AI tools.
C. Analyzing test results.
D. Writing empathetic responses.
34. What is the author's attitude towards using AI?
A. Objective. B. Worried. C. Skeptical. D. Dismissive.
35. The passage is mainly concerned with ________.
A. the influence of AI on different aspects of society
B. the relationship between AI literacy and its adoption
C. the development and application of AI technology
D. the challenges and solutions in AI development

The Spring Festival celebrations were in full swing at the crowded temple fair. Colorful lanterns hung above the streets, and the air was filled with the pleasant smell of fried dumplings and sweet candied fruits. Among the joyful crowd was a little boy named Leo, a 7-year-old American visiting China with his parents. Holding a rabbit-shaped lantern, he stared in awe at the dragon dancers twisting through the crowd.
Suddenly, a firecracker exploded nearby. Terrified, Leo dropped his lantern and rushed backward. When he locked up, his parents were nowhere to be seen. The sea of strangers in red coats and furry hats swallowed his tiny figure. Panic surged through him as he pushed through the crowd, tears streaming down his face.
Meanwhile, Leo's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, realized their son was missing. Madly, they searched the stalls selling paper cuttings and calligraphy brushes, shouting his name. But their voices were drowned out by the drums and laughter.
Just as hopelessness began to set in, a young volunteer in a bright yellow vest noticed Leo crying by a sugar painting stand. The volunteer, a girl named Wenwen, knelt down in front of Leo. She noticed his tear-streaked face and the fear in his eyes. "Hey, little boy, are you lost?" she asked gently in English, trying to hide her own concern. Leo took a few steps back, his heart beating wildly. He had been warned by his parents about strangers, and although Wenwen seemed kind, he was still cautious. "My mommy and daddy..." he hesitated, looking around desperately.

读后续写
Possible version:
Wenwen understood the situation immediately, so she showed hı m her volunteer badge. And she said, "I work here to help people like you. Do you remember where you last saw them?" Leo hesitated for a moment but then slowly nodded. He pointed towards the direction of the dragon dance area. Wenwen took his small hand, and Leo tensed up at first. But Wenwen's warm and reassuring grip made him feel a little more secure. Leo gradually relaxed and even managed to give her a small smile. They passed by stalls of traditional handicrafts and folk art, and Wenwen used her knowledge to explain the meanings behind each item, making Leo feel more connected to the place.
Wenwen kept talking to him to distract him from his fear and they went to the spot where Leo had lost sight of his parents. And there, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were waiting anxiously. When they saw Leo, they rushed towards him, their eyes filled with relief and gratitude. "Thank you so much, Wenwen," Mrs. Carter said, hugging Leo tightly. Leo looked up at Wenwen, and this time, his eyes were full of trust and thankfulness. The experience had turned a scary situation into a memorable lesson about kindness and the power of human connection.

W: Oh, there are face masks in it. Just put the gray box in storage.
2. B

W: All right, sir. We have flights leaving at 8:00 a. m.1:00 p. m. and 6:00 p. m. Which flight do you want to take?
M: I want to book a ticket for the morning please.

5. B
【原文】M: Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the supermarket?

M: 55 dollars? That's too expensive.
W: How about the one next to the yellow sweater? It's cheaper and very similar to this one. It comes in three colors: white, black and green.
M: Well, white one gets dirty easily and black would make me look dull.
W: Then I'll pack the green one for you?
M: OK.

W: Wow, what an amazing example! But the success of so many people around me proves that talent is more important. Susan, one of my aunts, is a quick learner. I remember once she told me that she had done nothing to prepare for a meeting, but she pulled it off, because she collected all the key information she needed in a short time.
M: Well, maybe. But for most ordinary people, all they can do is to spend more time and energy on what they are trying to accomplish.

W: Why? Your company does business with Chinese firms?
M: No, you might not believe this. We love Chinese films. My colleagues and I watch a Chinese film every week. We check the newly released movie online. And then we look at the reviews about it. Finally we decide whether to see it or not.
W: Good. I haven't seen any Chinese films. Can you recommend one?
M: Of course. What kind of films are you interested in? Comedies, action movies or war films? Chinese war films are quite excellent.
W: Which movie impressed you the most?
M: That must be The Battle at Lake Changjin.
W: I heard of it before. What is the main plot of the movie?
M: Well, if you want to know it, see it yourself.

【原文】W: Are New Year's resolutions powerful or pointless? Almost every year of my life, I've started the New Year with a set of resolutions that I've been determined to keep. The results, predictably, have been variable. Last year, I mostly kept to my fitness goal of doing 20-minute sports each day, but I failed miserably at my aim of quitting social media. According to my weekly screen-time reports, I still spend between two and three hours each day on my phone. I am far from alone in my determination to start each new year with a plan for self-improvement. At least a quarter of people typically make New Year's resolutions, and a large portion of those good wishes end in disappointment. Rationally speaking, January 1st should be no better than any other day to make a life change. So why put the needless pressure on ourselves to "upgrade" our lives at the opening of a new calendar? Recent psychological research, however, suggests that there are many good reasons to begin a new habit on the first day of a new year. That's because we can all increase our chances of sticking to our new goals for the new year.
