B. It does harm to people’s health.
C. It helps us to recover quickly.
B 19. A 20. B
We people are easy targets for flu in every season. It makes us wonder why we can’t find a way to totally get rid of it? The answer is that there’re actually hundreds of kinds of viruses around us. We can’t see and touch them, and we never know which one we will get infected with, so it’s impossible to find a cure for each one. When a virus attacks our body, it’s hard to detach ourselves from it. We will feel awful because we can’t breathe well. The virus raises temperature of our bodies, and makes us get flu. But the heat of our body is killing the virus at the same time. Besides, we may also have a sore throat or a runny nose to prevent the virus from invading our cells. Different people have different symptoms. In China, some people might eat nutritious food to improve their health and fitness, some people only take hot baths and drink warm water, and some people take medicines. However, there’s one interesting thing to notice. Some experts say taking medicines when we have flu is harmful to our health. The reason why the virus stays in our body longer is that our body can’t develop a way to fight against and kill it.

Some countries stand out as particularly attractive destinations for people trying to move abroad — expatriates (abb. expat) due to their welcoming atmosphere, economic opportunities, and high quality of life. Here are a few of the best countries to consider for your new home:
Canada: Known for its stunning natural landscapes, Canada consistently ranks among the top destinations for expats. With a strong economy, excellent healthcare system, and diverse cultural scene, Canada offers abundant opportunities for career advancement, outdoor recreation, and community engagement. Plus, it’s an easy move with minimal culture shock and expense.
Australia: With its sunny climate, laid-back lifestyle, and thriving economy, Australia is a popular choice for expats seeking adventure. The country’s strong job market and world-class education system make it an attractive destination for professionals, students, and families alike. Australia’s immigration policies are stricter, though. It’s easier to move to Australia if you are considered a skilled worker, have a work permit, and have already secured a job.
Germany: Renowned for its high-quality infrastructure, efficient public services, and robust economy, Germany is a magnet for expats seeking stability and prosperity. Germany offers a high standard of living and abundant opportunities for personal and professional growth. While things are certainly different than in America, you won’t experience too much culture shock in Germany.
Singapore: As a global hub for finance, technology, and innovation, Singapore attracts expats from around the world with its dynamic economy and urban lifestyle. Singapore offers a safe and welcoming environment for residents with its modern facilities and pristine communities.

When most kids go to the beach, they’re too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.
Cash, who is now known as the “conservation kid”, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn’t brush it aside.
He started with cleanups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors. In 2019, Cash, together with a Canadian conservationist, EllaGalaski-Rossen, started a nonprofit called the Cleanup Kids. Despite living in different countries, they managed to create educational videos on their You Tube channel. “We hope to be a really big nonprofit that eliminates plastic in the U. S. and Canada,” Cash said. “We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states of how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,” Cash said.
Cash was selected as one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2021 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He also earned the title of National Honoree, where he received a $5,000 grant to go to a nonprofit of his choice, and he became the first person to win the Youth Conservationist Award two years in a row from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.
“I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean. Because if you are connected to the ocean — if you love it and what lives in it — you’ll want to protect it,” he said. “This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.”
24. Which can replace the underlined words “brush it aside” in paragraph 2?
A. keep awake. B. Lose heart.
C. turn a clear eye to it. D. put it on one side
25. What is the purpose of the Cleanup Kids founded?
A. To call for ocean protection. B. To make instructive videos.
C. To spread marine knowledge. D. To recycle waste plastics.
26. Which of the following best describes Cash Daniels?
A. Determined and modest. B. Initiative and talented.
C. Ambitious and humorous. D. Sympathetic and devoted.
27. What does Cash Daniels’ story imply?
A. Passion fuels dreams. B. Great minds think alike.
C. Helping others is of great fun. D. Actions speak louder than words.
D 25. A 26. D 27. A
根据文章第二段划线词之前“He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn’t...(毕竟,他是在Chattanooga河边钓鱼长大的!但当他了解到80%来自陆地和河流的垃圾最终都进入了海洋后,他就不能……)”以及第三段开头“He started with cleanups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors.(他从清理河流开始,这件事很快就从家庭事务变成了志愿者和邻居的社区努力。)”
根据文章第三段“‘We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states on how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,’ Cash said.(卡什说:‘我们想让内陆各州的孩子和成年人了解他们的行为与水和海洋的关系。’)” 故选A项。
根据文章第二段“Cash, who is now known as the ‘conservation kid’, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn’t sit back.(Cash现在被称为‘环保孩子’,他一直热爱大自然。毕竟,他是在Chattanooga河边钓鱼长大的!但当他了解到80%来自陆地和河流的垃圾最终进入海洋时,他不能坐视不管。)”可知,Cash热爱大自然,关心环境,所以他是富有同情心的,根据文章最后一段“‘I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean. Because if you are connected to the ocean — if you love it and what lives in it — you’ll want to protect it,’ he said. ‘This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.’(‘我想环游世界,教别人,帮助他们感受到与海洋的联系。因为如果你和海洋有联系——如果你爱它和它的生物——你就会想要保护它,’他说。‘这是我的乐趣,随着每一个新发现,它变得更加有趣。’)”可知,Cash想要环游世界,教育别人,帮助他们感受到与海洋的联系,所以他是有奉献精神的。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“When most kids go to the beach, they’re too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.(当大多数孩子去海滩时,他们太专注于堆沙堡和溅水,而没有注意到垃圾,但几年前,对7岁Cash来说,注意到一根塑料吸管激发了他毕生拯救地球的热情。)”以及文章最后一段“ ‘I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean. Because if you are connected to the ocean — if you love it and what lives in it — you’ll want to protect it,’ he said. ‘This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.’(‘我想环游世界,教别人,帮助他们感受到与海洋的联系。因为如果你和海洋有联系——如果你爱它和它的生物——你就会想要保护它,’他说。‘这是我的乐趣,随着每一个新发现,它变得更加有趣。’)”以及其他段落的内容可知,一根塑料吸管激发了Cash拯救地球的热情而这种热情进而转化成了他的梦想,所以Cash的故事暗示了激情可以点燃梦想。故选A项。

A new study involving nearly 50.000 people from four continents offers new insights into identifying the quantity of daily walking steps that will best improve adults’ health and longevity(长寿), and whether the ideal number of steps differs across people of different ages. The study represents an effort to develop an evidence-based public health message about the benefits of physical activity. The often-repeated 10.000-step-a-day saying grew out of a decades—old marketing activity for a Japanese pedometer(计步器), with no science to back it up.
Led by physical activity professor Amanda Paluch, an international group of scientists conducted an experiment among adults aged 18 and older. They grouped the nearly 50,000 participants into four comparative groups according to average steps per day. The lowest step group averaged 3,500 steps; the second. 5,800; the third. 7,800; and the fourth, 10,900 steps per day. Among the three higher active groups, there was a 40-53% lower risk of death, compared to the lowest step group.
More specifically. for adults 60 and older the risk of early death evened out at about 6,000-8,000 steps per day. meaning that more steps than that provided no additional benefit for longevity, while for adults younger than 60, about 8,000-10,000 steps per day.
“So, what we saw was this continuing reduction in risk as the number of steps increases, until it levels of. Interestingly, the study found no definitive association with walking speed.” Paluch says.
The new study supports and expands findings from another study led by Paluch before, which found that walking at least 7,000 steps a day reduced middle-aged people’s risk of early death. “There’s a lot of evidence suggesting that moving even a little more is beneficial, particularly for those who are doing very little activity. Paluch says.”More steps per day are better for your health.”
28. Why did the scientists carry out the new study?
A. To know about people’s health condition.
B. To explain the pedometer’s working principles.
C. To determine the best physical activity for people.
D. To provide a scientific guideline on daily walking.
29. What does the underlined words “evened out” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. turned higher. B. kept its stability.
C. became unstable. D. changed rapidly.
30. Which is true according to the experiment?
A. All the persons should walk as much as possible.
B. Old people usually walk more than the young.
C. Walking pace is the key to avoiding early death.
D. The most beneficial steps differ by age groups.
31. What does Paluch advise people doing little activity to do?
A. To walk more steps. B. To control walking speed.
C. To limit walking distance. D. To track the number of steps.
D 29. B 30. D 31. A

根据文章第一段中的“A new study involving nearly 50.000 people from four continents offers new insights into identifying the quantity of daily walking steps that will best improve adults’ health and longevity(长寿), and whether the ideal number of steps differs across people of different ages. The study represents an effort to develop an evidence-based public health message about the benefits of physical activity.(一项涉及来自四大洲近5万人的新研究为确定每天步行多少步最能改善成年人的健康和长寿提供了新的见解,并探讨了不同年龄人群的理想步数是否有所不同。这项研究代表了一项努力,即制定基于证据的公共卫生信息,宣传体育活动的益处。)”可知,科学家进行这项新研究是为了提供关于日常步行的科学指南。故选D项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“More specifically. for adults 60 and older, the risk of early death evened out at about 6,000-8,000 steps per day. meaning that more steps than that provided no additional benefit for longevity, while for adults younger than 60, about 8,000-10,000 steps per day.(更具体地说,对于60岁及以上的成年人来说,每天走6000-8000步,早逝的风险就会evened out,这意味着超过这个步数对长寿没有额外的好处,而对于60岁以下的成年人来说,每天大约走8000-10000步。)”
根据文章第三段“More specifically. for adults 60 and older, the risk of early death evened out at about 6,000-8,000 steps per day. meaning that more steps than that provided no additional benefit for longevity, while for adults younger than 60, about 8,000-10,000 steps per day.(更具体地说,对于60岁及以上的成年人来说,每天走6000-8000步,早逝的风险就会保持稳定,这意味着超过这个步数对长寿没有额外的好处,而对于60岁以下的成年人来说,每天大约走8000-10000步。)”
根据文章最后一段中的““There’s a lot of evidence suggesting that moving even a little more is beneficial, particularly for those who are doing very little activity. Paluch says.”More steps per day are better for your health.”(“有很多证据表明,多走一点路是有益的,特别是对那些很少活动的人来说。” 故选A项。

In our body everything is important to our health no matter how small it is. There’s a small fatty thymus(胸腺), an organ located in our upper chest, just behind the breastbone. This organ is often said to be a ‘waste’ in adulthood. However, a review study suggests the thymus is not nearly as useless as experts once thought.
In childhood, the thymus is known to play a critical role in developing the immune(免疫的) system. When the thymus is removed at a young age, patients show long-term reductions in T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that fights against germs(细菌) and disease. Kids without a thymus also tend to have a damaged immune response to vaccines.
By the time a person hits adolescence, the thymus shrivels up and produces far fewer T-cells for the body. It can seemingly be removed without immediate harm, and because it sits in front of the heart, it is often taken out during heart surgery. For some patients with thymus cancer or autoimmune diseases, they need surgery to remove the thymus. But the thymus isn’t always a problem.
Using patient data from a state healthcare system, researchers in Boston compared the outcomes of patients who had undergone heart surgery: more than 6,000 people (the control group) who did not have their thymus removed and 1,146 people who did have their thymus removed. Those who underwent a thymus removal were almost twice as likely, as controls to die within 5 years, even after accounting for sex, age and race. Patients who had their thymus removed were also twice as likely to develop cancer within 5 years of surgery.
Why these associations exist is unknown, but researchers suspect a lack of thymus is somehow messing with the healthy function of the adult immune system. “Together, these findings support a role for the thymus contributing to new T-cell production in adulthood and to adult health,” the authors conclude. Their results, they say, strongly suggest that the thymus plays a functionally important role in our continued health.
32. Why is the thymus important in childhood?
A. It results in blood. B. It repairs immune functions.
C. It damages immune system. D. It makes T-cells.
33. Which is TRUE according to the article?
A. When the thymus is removed at a young age, it won’t affect T-cells.
B. The function of the thymus is producing blood.
C. Removing the thymus doesn’t result in any problems.
D. The thymus is a crucial organ in our body.
34. What’s the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. to analyse data. B. To reach a conclusion.
C. To provide evidence. D. To illustrate the purpose.
35. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Studies on the thymus still need improving.
B. Preserving the thymus benefits adult health.
C. Heart patients should have the thymus maintained.
D. Removing the thymus stimulates the immune system.
D 33. D 34. C 35. B

根据第四段“Using patient data from a state healthcare system, researchers in Boston compared the outcomes of patients who had undergone heart surgery: more than 6,000 people (the control group) who did not have their thymus removed and 1,146 people who did have their thymus removed. Those who underwent a thymus removal were almost twice as likely as controls to die within 5 years, even after accounting for sex, age and race. Patients who had their thymus removed were also twice as likely to develop cancer within 5 years of surgery.(波士顿的研究人员利用一个州医疗系统的患者数据,比较了接受心脏手术的患者的结果:6000多名(对照组)未切除胸腺的人和1146名切除了胸腺的人。即使考虑了性别、年龄和种族因素,切除胸腺的人在5年内死亡的可能性几乎是对照组的两倍。切除胸腺的患者在手术后5年内患癌症的可能性也是对照组的两倍)”及文章最后一段““Together, these findings support a role for the thymus contributing to new T-cell production in adulthood and to adult health,” the authors conclude. Their results, they say, strongly suggest that the thymus plays a functionally important role in our continued health(“总之,这些发现支持了胸腺在成年期对新T细胞产生和成人健康的作用,”作者总结道。他们说,他们的结果强烈表明,胸腺在我们持续的健康中起着功能上重要的作用)”可知,胸腺是我们身体的一个重要器官。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Using patient data from a state healthcare system, researchers in Boston compared the outcomes of patients who had undergone heart surgery: more than 6,000 people (the control group) who did not have their thymus removed and 1,146 people who did have their thymus removed. Those who underwent a thymus removal were almost twice as likely, as controls to die within 5 years, even after accounting for sex, age and race. Patients who had their thymus removed were also twice as likely to develop cancer within 5 years of surgery.(利用来自一个州医疗保健系统的患者数据,波士顿的研究人员比较了接受心脏手术的患者的结果:超过6000名没有切除胸腺的人(对照组)和1146名切除了胸腺的人。
根据文章最后一段““Together, these findings support a role for the thymus contributing to new T-cell production in adulthood and to adult health,” the authors conclude. 【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了几种独自旅行的小技巧来使旅行变得更加舒服和安全。
【36题详解】
由上文“When you are arranging to travel alone, you may have a million questions: Where should you go? Will there be someone to talk to? How do you stay safe? And is it all right to travel alone? (当你安排独自旅行时,你可能会有一百万个问题:你应该去哪里?有人可以倾诉吗?你如何保持安全?独自旅行可以吗?)”可知,这里主要讲独立旅游的担心,再结合下文给出的建议可知,空处应讲的是不必担心独自旅行,所以F项“Actually, traveling alone is not as frightening as it seems.(事实上,独自旅行并不像看起来那么可怕)”符合语境,有承上启下作用。故选F项。
【37题详解】
由上文“So make sure to choose a place that you feel comfortable with.(所以一定要选择一个你觉得舒服的地方)”可知,这里指出在旅行时选择一个你觉得舒服的地方,空处承接上文,具体介绍了让你舒服的地方,B项“It could also be somewhere far from your home(它也可能在离你家很远的地方)”符合语境,和上文“It could be somewhere close to home(可能在离家很近的地方。)”
由上文“Scheduled accommodations can make you less nervous.(安排好的住宿可以让你不那么紧张)”可知,这里指出要安排好住宿,再结合上文“In addition, when you book your hotel(另外,当你预订酒店时)”和下文“By doing it, you won’t be lost(这样你就不会迷路了)”可知,空处指出在订酒店时如何做能使自己不迷路,所以C项“ask if they will send a driver to pick you up(询问他们是否会派司机来接你)”符合语境。故选C项。
此处是本段小标题,根据下文“If you’re going to a touristy place like Thailand, there are lots of other people who are traveling alone. Most likely, they’ll be easy to talk to and they’ll want to communicate. They might also ask you to join them for dinner or a beer. That happens a lot.(如果你要去一个像泰国这样的旅游胜地,那里有很多独自旅行的人。最有可能的是,他们很容易沟通,他们想要交流。他们也可能邀请你和他们一起吃晚饭或喝啤酒。这种事经常发生)”可知,这里主要讲要主动与他人交流,所以A项“To be a talkative person(做一个健谈的人)”符合语境,能概括本段内容。故选A项。
由上文“Your family and friends love you and probably worry about you every day. What if you are travelling alone for a long time without keeping in touch with them?

故填but。
根据时间状语 “in the Tang and Song Dynasties” 可知,此处描述的是过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时,“develop”的过去式是 “developed”。

故填was based。
“____ people like most about Chinese knots”是主语从句,从句中缺少宾语,指物,所以用 “what”引导。故填what。

As Samuel Johnson says, great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance. In life, there are always ups and downs, different persons have different attitudes when faced with them.
As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Allen’s dream to be a dancer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about dancing. Whenever she had a chance, she would dance to the music. Her sweet and charming dancing deeply attracted everyone around her.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Allen attended school, her dancing teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to dance. Allen practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in dancing.
Unfortunately, one night a year later, Allen was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to the hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Allen needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Jane.
That night, Allen recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Allen, Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Allen’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Allen eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of dancing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
P1: Suddenly, one day a piece of good news came that a dancing performance would be held in the school.

P2: An exciting moment arrived. When the host announced it was Allen’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, one day a piece of good news came that a dancing show would be held in the school. On hearing it, Mary raced quickly to Allen from school, telling her that her classmates all expected her to dance on behalf of her class. Allen’s eyes burst into tears but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately told her firmly that she must be able to make it. In the following weeks with Mary’s assistance and encouragement, Allen kept on practicing dancing harder day and night. Hard work paid off in the end. Beautiful dancing emerged in our house again and smiles began to come back on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
An exciting moment arrived. When the host announced it was Allen’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. At once, everyone greeted her with warm applause. As she began to dance the sweet music, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful gestures, the whole hall falling into silence. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Allen received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Allen was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Allen’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.

More specifically. for adults 60 and older, the risk of early death evened out at about 6,000-8,000 steps per day. meaning that more steps than that provided no additional benefit for longevity, while for adults younger than 60, about 8,000-10,000 steps per day.
D
32 Why is the thymus important in childhood?

After two months we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Allen eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of dancing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
