As I passed my 50th birthday, I couldn’t help but reflect on my long-held dream of becoming a psychotherapist (心理治疗师). In my younger years, I had attempted to take some classes at the local community college, but life’s challenges and responsibilities made it difficult to continue. Eventually, I gave up on my dream, thinking it was too late.
Then, one day, I came across a quote by George Eliot: “It’s never too late to become what you might have been.” These words struck a chord with me and relighted my hope. I decided to give it another try.
At 51, I enrolled in college and began my journey. I worked hard, balancing my studies with my other responsibilities. My efforts paid off when I won a partial scholarship to a four-year college. At 55, I graduated with honors and was accepted into a master’s program. It seemed like my dream was finally within reach.
However, life had other plans. During a routine check-up, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor (脑瘤). The doctors said it was inoperable and gave me about a year to live. This news was shocking, but I refused to give up. I sought a second opinion and found a doctor in Los Angeles who believed he could help. The surgery was risky, but I decided to go through with it.
The recovery was incredibly tough. I had double vision, lost hearing in one ear, and couldn’t walk without help. Despite these challenges, I was determined to continue my studies. I set up a small desk in my bedroom and continued my master’s program from bed. For three years, I studied diligently, driven by my passion to help others.
Now, I am a certified psychotherapist running my own private practice. My journey has taught me that no matter what challenges you face or how old you are, it’s never too late to become what you might have been.

When Martin Roth began his career as a forest keeper in the 1980s, his job was to care for the forest in a way that would ensure continuity for decades, even centuries. Now, with climate change, it’s more about planning for an uncertain future. “It’s turned into disaster management,” says Roth, for whom the 3,000 acres of forest along the northeastern shore of Lake Constance in Germany double as testing ground for high-tech solutions, earning him the name “digital forest guardian” in the German forestry community.
Speed and efficiency: After a disastrous storm, the clock starts ticking. Damaged trees T need to be removed before the arrival of bark beetles, which breed (繁殖) in dead trees and can go on to devastate entire forests. While it used to take Roth two and a half hours to cover an acre of forest on foot, drones now let him survey the entire 3,000 acres in a matter of days, so he can quickly locate damaged trees, identify and inform the owners of affected plots, and send information to workers on the ground.
A digital reality: Since most of his work can now be done on a mobile device, Roth is spending more time outdoors. His most recent project is combining body camera with AI. By “looking” through his body camera, AI automatically recognizes the tree species he has marked and estimates(评估) the amount of wood it will produce, sending the information to his phone in real time.
Preparing for the future: Up to half of European tree species are unsuited to rising temperatures and extended drought periods, so Roth has begun experimenting with new species, planting them in small batches and keeping track of them in his system. With a forest continuously changing, there are dozens of areas that need interventions(干预) at different times, and there are not enough employees to keep it all straight. He says, “Either I know it, or the computer knows it, or no one knows it and it’s lost.”
8. Why is Roth called “digital forest guardian”?
A. Because he works faster than others.
B. Because he spends more time outdoors.
C. Because he doubles the size of the forest.
D. Because he uses high-tech in forest management.
9. What does the underlined word “devastate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Protect. B. Destroy. C. Reduce. D. Develop.
10. What does the last sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Roth thinks he can deal with all forest management tasks alone.
B. The computer has completely replaced humans in forest management.
C. Forest management is no longer important due to the shortage of employees.
D. Roth stresses the importance of human knowledge or digital means in his work.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Role of Drones in Modern Forestry
B. The Impact of Climate Change on Forests
C. From Forest Keeper to “Digital Forest Guardian”
D. High-Tech Solutions to Forest Management
D
Do you feel angry when you hear someone chewing loudly or tapping their fingers? If so you may have misophonia. For people with this condition, normal sounds like chewing or sniffing (抽鼻子) aren’t just annoying—they are unbearable. Scientists are trying to understand why this happens and how to help those who suffer from it.
Misophonia means “hatred of sound”. It makes everyday noises feel like a big threat. Imagine trying to study with the sound of birds outside your window or people clicking pens in class. These sounds can make it hard to focus and even cause a strong response.
One theory about misophonia is that it comes from our brain’s ability to detect hidden dangers. In the past, being alert to small sounds might have helped our ancestors survive. But today, this same ability can make harmless noises feel terrible. People with misophonia can’t ignore these sounds like others can. Their brains think the sounds are harmful and keep paying attention to them.
Misophonia also has connections with other conditions like depression and anxiety. Sometimes it appears after a bad experience, and it can run in families. However, scientists still don’t know exactly what causes it.
There is no simple test for misophonia, but doctors use questionnaires (问卷) to see how serious it is. One common tool is the Duke Misophonia Questionnaire (DMQ), which helps find out if the condition is affecting daily life, such as work, school, or relationships.
Since there is no cure for misophonia, treatment focuses on managing symptoms. Many patients use noise-canceling headphones or white noise to block out the sounds that bother them. Others try cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) (CBT).
CBT for misophonia is not like exposure therapy, which forces people to face their fears. Instead, it is adapted to what the patient can handle. It helps reduce self-blame and change negative thoughts. Research shows that CBT can help about a third to half of patients feel better.
12. How does misophonia affect people’s daily life?
A. It improves relationships. B. It causes physical pain.
C. It leads to loss of focus. D. It betters hearing ability.
13. What is the Duke Misophonia Questionnaire (DMQ) used to do?
A. Test seriousness. B. Manage symptoms.
C. Cure misophonia. D. Prevent misophonia.
14. What can we infer from the treatment for misophonia?
A. There is a clear cure for misophonia.
B. Treating misophonia only requires emotional support.
C. Noise-canceling headphones are the most effective method.
D. Different methods are used to manage misophonia symptoms.
15 What is the main idea of the text?
A. It discusses the history of misophonia research.
B. It introduces new treatments for sound sensitivity.
C. It focuses on understanding and managing misophonia.
D. It examines the impact of misophonia on mental health.

Should Memory Be Improved?
We’ve all been there — staring at a pile of books, desperately hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably asked if there’re any ways to get better at remembering things.____16____?
Break up study periods
Every student who has made flashcards knows that it can be helpful to go back over what they’ve studied before. According to The Learning Scientists — a group of cognitive scientists — you can learn things better if you wait for some time before trying to study them again.____17____, you’ll remember it better in the future, according to them.
____18____
Similarly, David Robson from BBC Future mentions that having a rest after studying can help you remember things better. We don’t know exactly why this happens, but it has been suggested that it’s to do with the relationship between long-term and short-term memory.
Use memory skills
Another study tip from The Learning Scientists is to change between different topics as you study. ____19____. Many people say that they can remember things better if they connect ideas together or link them to pictures. Jonathan Hancock, a former world memory champion, says that putting information in different places in your mind or linking it to special pictures can help you remember it better.
Follow general tips for better memory
To improve your memory, you should stay organized and avoid stress, alcohol, and smoking. ____20____. If you follow these tips, you may find it easier to remember things. The good news is that improving our memory is something we can control.
A. Have long-term memory
B. Take breaks after studying
C. Getting plenty of rest and exercise is also important
D. When you try to use different kinds of memory skills
E. Why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this
F. They say this can help you build links between different ideas
