“Thank you for your email. I have left to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins in Antaretica (南极洲). I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” Last year, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.
The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger. To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
Luckily, the idea worked. In 2001, there was another oil spill. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area.
However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.

Being concerned (焦虑的) about what other people think about us is very common. However, we shouldn’t spend so much time caring about others’ opinions.
In fact, if we always worry about how others see us because of what we do, we can’t get something done. So, how can we learn not to attach too much importance to others’ views? Well, the answer is learning to value ourselves. We should live our lives for ourselves. This is easier said than done, but there are a few ways to go about doing this.
First, we should remember that our biggest judges (裁判) are ourselves. If we have a low opinion of ourselves, then we think that others feel the same way about us. To get over this, British therapist (心理治疗师) Chloe Brotheridge wrote in Psychology Today that we should “learn to love ourselves”. For example, you can make a list of the things you’re good at and practice them every day. You can also spend more time with people who love you. These things can help you feel b... about yourself.
Second, as Brotheridge wrote, “We sometimes can’t control the way other people react (反应) to us, no matter how hard we try.” By realizing this, you can learn to focus more on things that make you excellent.
At the same time, however, we shouldn’t completely take no notice of how we behave when we are with other people. So, the best thing to remember is to always be nice to others. If you do this, you won’t need to worry about how others will see you.

A. Look for. B. Pay too much attention to.
C. Blow out. D. Put up.

A. Bad. B. Bored. C. Better. D. Blind.
39. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A. We should take no notice of our behaviors completely.
B. We should try to control other people’s reaction to us.
C We should always think about others’ views.
D. We can learn to focus more on things that make us excellent.
40. What is the best title for the text?

In October, 14-year-old Yash Mehta from the US won first place in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge and a $3,500 (25,500 yuan) prize. He created his own electronic braille reader (电子盲文阅读器).
Mehta’s journey began this year when he visited his grandfather in India, who helps run a school for the blind. He found that none of the students had a modern electronic braille reader. Then he learned that most braille readers cost around $3,000, while some cost as much as $15,000.
Mehta, who loves engineering (工程学) and helping others, decided to make a model that cost less than $50. The young engineer finally invented a small electronic braille reader that only cost $35.
Mehta noticed the serious situation for the blind around the world. “There are many people who have eye problems around the world. Most of blind people live in low-and medium-income (中低收入的) countries, where it is very hard to find braille …,” said Mehta.
Having cheaper braille readers is necessary for the education of the blind because their education has been limited by the high cost of braille readers. “Cutting down the cost of braille readers is very important to make education more possible for everyone,” Mehta said.
For Mehta, cutting down the cost of the machine is not enough. He also wants to make the machine more convenient to use. He is now working with schools to improve the electronic braille reader. He hopes to provide 1,000 free electronic braille readers to blind people in developing countries each year.

36. What do the underlined words “attach too much importance to” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Look for. B. Pay too much attention to.
C Blow out. D. Put up.
37. Who are the biggest judges for us according to the text?
A. Our best friends. B. Ourselves.
C. Our parents. D. Our teachers.
38. What is the proper word in the sentence “These things can help you feel b... about yourself.”?
A. Bad. B. Bored. C. Better. D. Blind.
39. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A. We should take no notice of our behaviors completely.
B. We should try to control other people’s reaction to us.
C. We should always think about others’ views.
D. We can learn to focus more on things that make us excellent.
40. What is the best title for the text?
A. Learn to value ourselves B. Learn to care about others
C. Learn to work with others D. Learn to be nice to others

阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
