With the release of its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, DeepSeek, a Chinese firm, has laid waste to several years of American policy meant to hold back Chinese innovation.
The man at the center of it all is Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s 40-year-old founder. Mr Liang remains a mystery (谜) to most people. Those who have had professional dealings with DeepSeek say he is crazy about human-like artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the impact it could have on the world. In his pursuit of it, he is up-ending ideas about technological progress both in the West and China.
Public information on Mr Liang is limited. Born into a family of teachers in a small village near the southern city of Zhanjiang in 1985, he was a gifted student. A former instructor claimed he mastered university-level maths in middle school. Later he gained entry into Zhejiang University. A master’s degree at the same university, under a well-known machine-vision scientist, exposed him to the field of AI. Other than these, people can’t find his other information.
At that time, Hangzhou was a center of Internet technology and home to rising companies such as Alibaba, an e-merchant. Mr Liang and several classmates remained in the city and launched an investment group called Yakebi.
DeepSeek was made a standalone company in 2023. Last year, it released a cheap chatbot. That kicked off a price war in China’s AI industry, forcing the country’s biggest tech firms — Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance and Tencent — to lower their own prices.
By Mr Liang’s own telling, this was not a method to attract more users. He said costs had fallen as DeepSeek explored new model structures, something that made it different from others. For Mr Liang, developing models using less computing power is an important step in pursuit of his longer-term aim. “Our goal is AGI, which requires us to explore new model structures,” he has told local media.
24. What is Liang Wenfeng interested in?
A. Studying American policy. B. Dealing with other professionals.
C. Information exchange with the West. D. Human-like artificial general intelligence.
25. What is the main cause that makes DeepSeek’s chatbot distinguished?
A. Its small size. B. Its lower cost.
C. Its simple aim. D. Its humble producer.
26. Which of the following can best describe Liang Wenfeng?
A. Talented and ambitious. B. Charitable and outgoing.
C. Hard-working and simple. D. Reliable and easy-going.
27. What is the aim of the text?
A. To encourage people to use DeepSeek.
B. To introduce the founder of DeepSeek.
C. To explore Lang Wenfeng’s inner world.
D. To show China’s great achievements in technology.
D 25. B 26. A 27. B

According to a new survey of 2,000 American women, a third of women admit they’re behind on doctor appointments or getting their physical examinations.
For those feeling behind, the most likely reason was anxiety going to the doctor. This was followed by cost and simply feeling too busy caring for their children. And about a half said they tend to be less concerned about health problems they can’t physically see or feel. This is especially important in the context of heart disease.
“Heart disease can easily go unnoticed because it can occur without obvious symptoms (症状),” said Katie Lucas, Senior VP of Marketing for Doctor’s Best. “This is true especially for women because their symptoms can differ from those experienced by men or they can have no symptoms at all. That is why women, especially those going through their 50s when heart disease risk increases, should ensure they are not skipping out on their regular check-ups.”
Unfortunately, the study showed that only 50% said they are likely to visit a doctor when they think everything is fine. And even if they are experiencing some symptoms that may related to heart disease, 25% of women surveyed decided to sleep it off rather than visit their doctor. Additionally, just 20% are fully confident that they know their heart disease risk, despite it being the leading cause of death for American women.
While it is recommended that most healthy adults get their cholesterol (胆固醇) checked every four to six years — the best way to keep an eye on your risk for heart disease—30% of women don’t follow that recommendation.
“With heart disease being the leading cause of death in our country, we can make small changes in our daily life that can help protect our cardiovascular (心血管的) health,” said Katie Lucas. “The first step is staying on top of annual exams and labs, so you have a good measure of where you stand, then ensuring your body is getting the nutrients it needs to do its job and replacing nutrients that are decreasing with age.”
28. What is the number one reason for delaying a doctor’s appointment?
A. Having no time. B. Feeling anxious.
C. Distrust of doctors. D. High medical expenses.
29. Which statement might Katie Lucas agree with?
A. Women are more likely to suffer heart attacks.
B. Heart disease can be called “a silent killer”.
C. People prioritize heart health over other concerns.
D. People have similar symptoms of heart disease.
30. What percentage of people are fully aware of their heart disease risk?
A. About a half. B. One third. C. A quarter. D. One fifth.
31. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. Life changes in our daily life.
B. The necessity of getting enough nutrients.
C. Strategies for heart health promotion.
D. Tips on measuring cardiovascular health.
B 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第二段第一句“For those feeling behind, the most likely reason was anxiety going to the doctor.(对于那些觉得落后(没去看医生)的人来说,最有可能的原因是去看医生时感到焦虑)”可知,推迟看医生预约的首要原因是感到焦虑。
根据第三段第一句“‘Heart disease can easily go unnoticed because it can occur without obvious symptoms (症状),’ said Katie Lucas, Senior VP of Marketing for Doctor’s Best.(Doctor’s Best 公司的高级营销副总裁凯蒂・卢卡斯说:‘心脏病很容易被忽视,因为它可能在没有明显症状的情况下发生。’)”
根据第四段最后一句“Additionally, just 20% are fully confident that they know their heart disease risk, despite it being the leading cause of death for American women.(此外,尽管心脏病是美国女性的主要死因,但只有20%的人完全有信心了解自己患心脏病的风险)”可知,只有20%即五分之一的女性充分了解自己患心脏病的风险。
根据最后一段“‘With heart disease being the leading cause of death in our country, we can make small changes in our daily life that can help protect our cardiovascular (心血管的) health,’ said Katie Lucas. ‘The first step is staying on top of annual exams and labs, so you have a good measure of where you stand, then ensuring your body is getting the nutrients it needs to do its job and replacing nutrients that are decreasing with age.’(凯蒂・卢卡斯说:‘由于心脏病是我国的主要死因,我们可以在日常生活中做出一些小的改变,这有助于保护我们的心血管健康。第一步是坚持每年进行检查和化验,这样你就能很好地了解自己的状况,然后确保你的身体获得所需的营养来维持正常功能,并补充随着年龄增长而减少的营养。’)”可知,最后一段主要谈论的是促进心脏健康的策略,包括定期检查和补充营养等。故选C项。

To get treats, apes (猿类) eagerly pointed them out to humans who didn’t know where they were, a seemingly simple experiment that demonstrated for the first time that apes will communicate unknown information in the name of teamwork. The study also provides the clearest evidence to date that apes can intuit another’s ignorance, an ability thought to be uniquely human.
“The ability to perceive gaps in one another’s knowledge is at the heart of our most complicated social behaviors, central to the we ways cooperate, communicate and work together strategically,” said co-author Chris Krupenye. “Because this so-called theory of-mind supports many of the capacities that make humans unique, many believe it is absent from animals. But this work demonstrates the rich mental foundations that humans and other apes share — and suggests that these abilities evolved (进化) millions of years ago in our common ancestors.”
Krupenye and co-author Luke Townrow worked with three male bonobos (倭黑猩猩), all living at a research and education nonprofit. During the experiment one of the bonobos would sit with Townrow, facing each other across a table. The bonobo would watch as a second person placed a treat under one of three cups. Sometimes Townrow could see where the treat was going, sometimes he couldn’t. The bonobo could have the treat if Townrow could find it.
Whether or not Townrow saw where the treat was hidden, he’d say, “Where’s the grape?” and then wait 10 seconds. If he’d seen the treat being hidden, during the 10 seconds the ape would usually sit still and wait for the treat. But when Townrow hadn’t seen where the treat was hidden, the ape would quickly point to the right cup.
The work is the first to copy in a controlled setting similar findings from the wild that suggest chimpanzees will make sounds to warn groupmates ignorant to potential threats, such as a snake.
“We predicted that if apes are really tracking ignorance, v when their partners lacked knowledge they would be pointing more often and more quickly and that’s exactly what they did,” Krupenye said.
32. What does the underlined word “intuit” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Change. B. Forgive. C. Employ. D. Sense.
33. What can we infer about the ability to perceive knowledge gaps?
A. It is unique to humans.
B. It divides people into different classes.
C. It is also seen in animals.
D. It comes from human interaction with animals.
34. What is the purpose of the experiment with three bonobos?
A To show their gift for hiding things. B. To test their ability to communicate.
C. To observe their learning behavior. D. To assess their memory skills.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Don’t know something? Apes can tell B. Can’t see clearly? Apes can
C. Lacking in teamwork? Apes show you D. Not good at observing? Apes teach you
D 33. C 34. B 35. A

____36____ Kids need to be taught from a very early age that they don’t get to keep everything they earn. Just as the government collects a part of your income, you should withhold (扣留) a part of your child’s birthday money. Call it a tax to get them used to the fact that they can’t keep everything they earn. ____37____ Then, without the child’s knowledge, put the money into a savings account. When your child is ready to go to college, hand over the account. They’ll think you’re a hero, and they’ll see firsthand the value of delayed satisfaction and long-term investing.
Save a little. ____38____ Some items simply cost more than the child has available to spend. So start every spending goal with a savings plan. By training them to save for long-term goals, you’ll be teaching the benefit of delayed satisfaction.
Spend a little. One of the more obvious benefits of money is the joy of spending it. ____39____ So they can develop a positive relationship with money, based on a mindset of earning in order to spend.
Give a little. Children should be taught that the opportunities that come with money also go with the responsibility to serve those who are less fortunate. For every dollar your children receive, decide on a part that will go to charities. Let them decide who receives the money, whether it’s a charity or a friend in need. ____40____
A. Tax a little.
B. Teach a little.
C. But not all joy can be bought with money.
D. Allow your child to buy something they truly want.
E. In the process, they might discover the joy of helping others.
F. Not every item the child wants can be purchased immediately.
G. This can make them adjust their spending and saving plans accordingly.
A 37. G 38. F 39. D 40. E
根据下文“Just as the government collects a part of your income, you should withhold (扣留) a part of your child’s birthday money. Call it a tax to get them used to the fact that they can’t keep everything they earn.(就像政府会从你的收入中收取一部分一样,你也应该保留一部分给孩子的生日钱。把它称为一种税,让他们习惯这样一个事实:他们不可能保留自己赚到的一切)”可知,作者建议家长扣下孩子的一部分钱用来“纳税”,由此推断本段提到的原则是“征税”,故A选项“征收一点税”符合语境,故选A。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Just as the government collects a part of your income, you should withhold (扣留) a part of your child’s birthday money. Call it a tax to get them used to the fact that they can’t keep everything they earn.(就像政府会从你的收入中收取一部分一样,你也应该保留一部分给孩子的生日钱。
根据上文“Spend a little. One of the more obvious benefits of money is the joy of spending it.(花一点。

In 2010, I experienced multiple life-changing setbacks within a short period of time. My marriage ended after seventeen years, I got laid off, a dear friend died, and my teenage son was out of my hands. My physical and emotional health suffered as I attempted to keep my mind straight in overcoming pain and uncertainty.
So, in 2013, I decided to do something every year that I’d never done before. Life is a race and “Just Keep Going” became my motto (格言). I made a decision to LIVE! I started walking in 2013, completed my first 5K in 2014, finished my first half marathon in 2015, and blew my own mind when I conquered a full 26. 2-mile marathon in 2016. This was in addition to writing a second children’s book that was featured on FOX 5 news. Life was great for a while.
Then my dad lost his battle with cancer in 2017. This loss shook me in a way that was far more painful than my combined experiences in 2010. I went through my sorrow but I wasn’t defeated by it. Just Keep Going.
In August 2017, I decided to sign up for a triathlon, in which I had to compete in three different sports — swimming, cycling and running. I started pre-training in February 2018. I had focused on preparing for the swim portion of the event more than biking and running.
My anxiety eased up when I saw my coach Lloyd Henry and teammates Kandis Gibson and Maxwell P. Blakeney. I stepped into the water with my wave and two minutes later, we were off. I was talking in my head the entire time, reminding myself to see the buoy (浮标) so I’d know what direction to swim. When I raised my head to sight, I couldn’t see because of the fog. Just Keep Going.
When I finally made it out of the water, I discovered I was the last person to exit the lake. Oh well, I finished without quitting and getting pulled.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
It was time to cycle no matter how tired I was from swimming.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After I survived the swim and the hilly bike ride, running would be easy for me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was time to cycle no matter how tired I was from swimming. Just Keep Going. My coach helped settle my nerves once my feet touched land. He walked me up the stairs near transition so I could switch into my cycling clothes. When I arrived at the transition area, I saw that my bike was the only one there... out of 500. I silenced my thoughts and repeated, Just Keep Going. I took off and heard the volunteer say on the radio, “The last bike is now out of transition.” I was too determined to be embarrassed! I told myself never to give up.
After I survived the swim and the hilly bike ride, running would be easy for me. As I had run a lot and I had run several marathons, I was confident that I would easily complete the last part of the triathlon. My goal is not to win, but to finish. So I just tried my best and told myself to Just Keep Going. I ran at the most comfortable pace. I turned the corner and saw the finish line. A rush of success came over me. I thought I could do it and I did! I swam, I biked, I ran. “Look at me, Daddy. I’m a triathlete!”

Late Night Openings for the Final Week of Monet and London
More tickets have been released for the final week of The Courtauld Gallery’s exhibition The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Monet and London. Views of the Thames, due to exceptional demand.
The exhibition brings together for the first time in 120 years Claude Monet’s extraordinary series of paintings of the Thames in London. Begun during three stays in the capital between 1899 and 1901, these extraordinary paintings of the Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross Bridge and Waterloo Bridge were exhibited in Paris in 1904. Monet enthusiastically wanted to show them in London the following year but plans fell through. The Courtauld will realize Monet’s unfulfilled ambition of exhibiting this exceptional series just 300 meters from the Savoy Hotel where the artist stayed and many of the works were painted.

27 What is the aim of the text?
A. To encourage people to use DeepSeek.
B. To introduce the founder of DeepSeek.
C. To explore Lang Wenfeng’s inner world.
D. To show China’s great achievements in technology.

A Women are more likely to suffer heart attacks.

A. To show their gift for hiding things. B. To test their ability to communicate.
C. To observe their learning behavior. D. To assess their memory skills.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Don’t know something? Apes can tell B. Can’t see clearly? Apes can
C. Lacking in teamwork? Apes show you D. Not good at observing? Apes teach you

Are your kids smart with money? Probably not! Here are four principles to begin teaching your children financial literacy
