I was recently invited to head up north for a preview of Dundreggan Rewilding Center, which will fully open to the public soon. Those who make it along for the opening weekend will be able to enjoy free events, including guided walks, tours of the tree nursery, storytelling sessions, plenty of fun for kids, and activities led by naturalist Nick Baker and expert in tracks and signs, Dan Puplett.
We looked around the new architect-designed center. The building has a number of sustainable features, including solar panels and reclaimed wood furniture in the café area. This is one of two new buildings, the other of which is said to offer accessible accommodation for those who wish to come for a longer rewilding experience.
Entering the building, the first thing that we saw was a sculpture — the work of local artist Helen Denerley. The sculpture depicts a tree with many native animals within it, made from reclaimed metal. From here, we saw the other areas — classrooms, event spaces, the café and lively information panels throughout, giving information about rewilding, the interconnectedness of forest ecosystems, local wildlife, and more.
As our guide so rightly pointed out, the building is just the jumping-off point — the place from which people can branch out to discover so much more on a series of accessible trails and more adventurous hikes in the surrounding landscape.
One key focus for this project is definitely community, as well as rewilding. It celebrates local Gaelic heritage and history as well as wildlife, woodlands, and natural wonders. Speaking briefly with two friendly and welcoming employees working in the café who were among the 20 locals who have new jobs thanks to the project, their enthusiasm for the new center and excitement to be involved in getting it off the ground shone through.
4. What did the author do at Dundreggan?
A. She toured a new building. B. She held storytelling sessions.
C. She joined a naturalist-led activity. D. She attended an opening celebration.
5. What feature does the rewilding center highlight?
A. Wildness and adventure. B. Efficiency and attractiveness.
C Accessibility and simplicity. D. Sustainability and instructiveness.
6. What conclusion can we draw about the guide?
A. He believed the project could inspire more actions.
B. He was enthusiastic about protecting native animals.
C. He advocated more informed decisions about rewilding.
D. He showed concern over developing the surrounding landscapes.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The prospect of the project. B. The significance of the project.
C. The recent achievements of the project. D. The operational principle of the project.

If the other paintings in the room that houses Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris could talk, they might be whispering “Good riddance (解脱) !” to one another right now. That’s owing to the French government’s announcement that the world’s most famous painting is to be removed from the Salle des Etats and rehoused in its own space in the Louvre with a dedicated entrance.
This particular space, accessible independently from the rest of the museum, will allow Mona Lisa’s conditions of exhibition, presentation and interpretation it deserves. The move that aims to relieve the Louvre’s overcrowding problem isn’t just great for Mona Lisa. It could also allow the dozens of other artworks in the Salle des Etats by the likes of Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese to finally receive their due.
“People have just been coming to check their ‘I paid a visit to Mona Lisa’s box’ ”, said Souleymane, a professor of French and philosophy at Columbia University who was appointed by the museum in 2024 to give a series of lectures about its art collection. “And even if you go to that room with the intention of looking at the other paintings, you would be distracted (分散注意力) by Mona Lisa.” The other major paintings in the space include Titian’s Pastoral Concert, Tintoretto’s The Coronation of the Virgin, and Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana, which is a huge painting that people don’t look at because it’s on the wall that faces Mona Lisa.
“The Wedding Feast at Cana is one of the treasures of the Louvre,” said Compagnon, a professor at the College de France and at Columbia University. Compagnon is also excited for visitors to be able to pay attention to his favorite painting in the room, Titian’s Man with a Glove.
8. Why is Mona Lisa being moved to a new space in the Louvre?
A. To make room for an exhibition.
B. To make it convenient for experts to study it.
C. To improve its exhibition conditions and reduce overcrowding.
D. To highlight its importance as the world's most famous artwork.
9. What is Souleymane’s attitude towards the government’s announcement?
A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Cooperative. D. Dismissive.
10. Which of the following paintings is exhibited opposite to Mona Lisa?
A. Pastoral Concert. B. The Coronation of the Virgin.
C. The Wedding Feast at Cana. D. Man with a Glove.
11. What does Compagnon imply about Mona Lisa?
A. It deserves better protection.
B. It fails to live up to its fame.
C. It should be promoted through lectures.
D. It takes visitors’ attention away from other exhibits.

When Philip Sontag first visited Antarctica as a Ph. D. student, he collected a bag of penguin (企鹅) feathers. A decade later, Sontag and his team have discovered how to use these feathers to map mercury (汞) pollution in the Southern Hemisphere, a growing threat to wildlife.
Mercury, a poisonous by-product of gold mining, becomes more and more in the food chain and affects animals’ nervous systems. While sampling rocks or soil for mercury provides limited insight, tracking its presence in the food web is crucial for ecosystem monitoring.
Penguins have a way to dispose of mercury through their feathers, which they molt (换羽) regularly. Sontag, now a polar researcher at Rutgers University, and his team analyzed these molted feathers to determine where penguins were exposed to mercury. They found a clear relationship between mercury levels and carbon-13, which varies geographically and acts as a marker for where penguins feed or breed (繁殖). The study confirmed this pattern across seven penguin species in the Southern Ocean, revealing higher mercury exposure in northern, warmer regions with higher carbon-13 levels.
The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bioindicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants. By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time, rather than just at a single moment. For example, penguin species living near each other showed different mercury and carbon-13 levels due to varying migration and feeding patterns. These data could be modeled into a map-like database to aid conservation and polar research.
Marine scientist Miriam Gimeno Castells notes that penguins are mid-level predators (捕食性动物), and undergo dramatic molts, making it easy to collect feathers from many individuals. The molted feathers contain mercury that gets into their body during the nonbreeding season.
Sontag plans to collect newer feathers from different species and compare mercury levels in penguins’ blood and their food with those in their feathers. As for the penguins’ health, senior author John Reinfelder makes it clear that they have not yet been exposed to poisonous mercury levels. “The penguins will be okay,” he says.
12. How did Sontag use the penguin feathers he collected?
A. He kept them as a reminder of his trip.
B. He studied the content of a chemical in them.
C. He observed their changes in different environments.
D. He classified them to identify different species of penguins.
13. What does the underlined part “dispose of” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Recognize. B. Consume. C. Remove. D. Combine.
14. What do we know about penguins from the text?
A. They are ideal bioindicators.
B They are sensitive to carbon-13.
C. They are top-level predators in the food chain.
D. They are free from the effects of human activities.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Life Cycle of Penguins in Antarctica.
B. Gold Mining and Its Effects on Penguins.
C. The Impact of Climate Change on Penguin Populations.
D. Penguins Help Map Antarctica’s Growing Mercury Threat.

People worried there would be big problems when clocks on computers went from December 31, 1999 to the year 2000. This was because many computers used just two digits to record the year. ____17____
But how would computers cope with “00” — would they think it was 2000 or would they take it as 1900 and stop working?
Some people thought this could mean that lights would go out across the world as computers failed. ____18____
Governments spent hundreds of billions of dollars planning for possible problems and replacing old systems with new ones that used four-digit dates. The US alone spent $100 billion. But some countries did almost nothing.
And when midnight came on December 31, planes didn't fall out of the sky and the lights didn't go out. Most of the problems were quite small. ____19____ In Ishikawa, Japan, some equipment failed at a nuclear facility — although backup systems made sure there was no danger. And a group of over 150 pregnant women in the UK were given wrong information about their babies' health because their hospitals' computer systems got their birth dates wrong. But some people said the worries — and all that money — had been for nothing.

It was the day Yollie got her graduation certificate of Baylor College of Medicine. Her dream finally came true. She took out an old greyish dress from her suitcase, her mind flooded by memories of the days when her mother saved money for her education.
Yollie’s mother, Mrs Moreno, was a woman with a unique sense of humor. As a single mother, she supported the family by working at the local market. She didn’t earn much money, but she was always positive and had her own way to provide for Yollie and at the same time saved as much money as possible. Her ways were not always clever ones, though, among which an embarrassing one stood out in Yollie’s memory.
Yollie was a smart kid at Saint Theresa’s High School. She was the winner of the school’s spelling bees. Mrs Moreno encouraged her daughter to study hard, hoping Yollie would realize her dream of becoming a doctor one day. She provided Yollie with a desk, typewriter, and a lamp to protect her eyes from long hours of studying.
One day, Yollie needed a new black outfit for the eighth-grade fall dance, but unluckily, their old car had already cost them nearly a hundred dollars in repairs. Mrs Moreno didn’t have much to spend on the outfit so she decided to buy Yollie a pair of black shoes and fabric dye (染料) to turn her white summer dress black.
At first Yollie doubted her mother’s idea. However, to her surprise, the dress turned out shiny and sophisticated (精致的) after being dyed. She was excited to go to the dance. The dance was romantic, with paper lanterns swinging in the trees and creating a scene straight out of a movie. Yollie enjoyed dancing with her friends under the lanterns until rain began to fall. Disaster struck when Yollie’s dyed dress started to leak black dye, ruining her outfit. In embarrassment, she ran home through the storm.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Mrs Moreno was shocked at the sight of Yollie, but she quickly got her sense of humor at work in just seconds.

C. Accessibility and simplicity.
A 5. D 6. A 7. B

C 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“This particular space, accessible independently from the rest of the museum, will allow Mona Lisa’s conditions of exhibition, presentation and interpretation it deserves. The move that aims to relieve the Louvre’s overcrowding problem isn’t just great for Mona Lisa. (这个特殊的空间,可以独立于博物馆的其他部分进入,将给予《蒙娜丽莎》应有的展览、展示和解读条件。这一旨在缓解卢浮宫过度拥挤问题的举措不仅对《蒙娜丽莎》有好处。)”可知,将《蒙娜丽莎》移至新空间一是为了改善它的展览条件,二是为了缓解卢浮宫的拥挤问题。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““People have just been coming to check their ‘I paid a visit to Mona Lisa’s box’ ”, said Souleymane, a professor of French and philosophy at Columbia University who was appointed by the museum in 2024 to give a series of lectures about its art collection. “And even if you go to that room with the intention of looking at the other paintings, you would be distracted (分散注意力) by Mona Lisa.”
根据第三段“The other major paintings in the space include Titian’s Pastoral Concert, Tintoretto’s The Coronation of the Virgin, and Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana, which is a huge painting that people don’t look at because it’s on the wall that faces Mona Lisa. (这个空间里的其他主要画作包括提香的《田园音乐会》、丁托列托的《圣母加冕》和委罗内塞的《加纳的婚礼》,这是一幅巨大的画作,人们不看它是因为它在正对着《蒙娜丽莎》的墙上。)”可知,在《蒙娜丽莎》对面展出的画作是《加纳的婚礼》。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““The Wedding Feast at Cana is one of the treasures of the Louvre,” said Compagnon, a professor at the College de France and at Columbia University. Compagnon is also excited for visitors to be able to pay attention to his favorite painting in the room, Titian’s Man with a Glove.

C He observed their changes in different environments.

注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Mrs Moreno was shocked at the sight of Yollie, but she quickly got her sense of humor at work in just seconds. “Get changed and give the dress a wash. Let’s see what color it will turn,” she said. Yollie broke into laughter, replying, “Greyish, I think. Maybe grey will be in fashion next year.” Yollie got changed and put the dress into the washing machine. When they took it out, they were disappointed that it was an ugly greyish color. “Sorry dear, if you want to wear it again, I will have to dye it black,” Mrs Moreno joked. “I’d better choose a fine day to wear it,” Yollie said giggling.
From then on, Yollie took the ugly dress with her wherever she went. It was a reminder of her mother’s struggle to bring her up, a reminder of Mom’s positiveness towards challenges in life and a reminder of the days when life could be hard but never dull. She knew deep in her heart that she owed everything to her mother, who worked hard, saved and gave her the best education. She decided to dye it black again so that she would be able to put it on and fly home to share with Mom the happiness of graduation.
