As more and more Chinese are paying bigger attention to health and life quality, traditional Chinese exercises like tai chi and baduanjin are gaining increasing favor even among young people.
Zhou Hua, a university student, used to view tai chi and other traditional Chinese exercises as sports for elderly retirees because the moving was at a slow pace and their activities looked dull. But after surgery in the summer of 2022, Zhou could not participate in vigorous sports and had to earn school credits in tai chi and baduanjin. He has seen their benefits only after practicing regularly. Zhou said, “For students who lack exercise like me, tai chi and baduanjin enable us to work the entire body and activate internal organs. More importantly, such exercises emphasize a relaxed and calm mind that is good for one’s health.”
The World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity a week, or an average of 21 minutes a day. According to a national report, the number of people participating in traditional Chinese exercises last year was up nearly 8 percent. The report also noted that survey participants reported feeling more energetic, finding it easier to focus and remember, and experiencing fewer instances of cold hands and feet.
Zhang Yimin, an expert on sports and health, pointed out that traditional Chinese workouts focus on the coordination of the mind and body and matching movement to breathing and concentration. He agreed that such slow-paced workouts are particularly suitable for white-collar workers who suffer from insomnia, middle-aged and elderly people who are physically incapable of engaging in intense workouts.
Zhang Dandan, a 30-year-old white-collar worker, picked up baduanjin about half a year ago by following online tutorials, having been drawn in by its low impact and convenience. She could see the obvious improvement of her health and quality of life.
24. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A handbook of traditional Chinese exercises.
B. A review of a book about traditional Chinese exercises.
C. A news report about the popularity of traditional Chinese exercises.
D. An essay on the benefits of traditional Chinese exercises for the elderly.
25. Why did Zhou Hua begin to practice tai chi and baduanjin?
A. To improve his grades in sports classes.
B. To compete in sports events on campus.
C. To get enough academic credits after an operation.
D. To popularize traditional Chinese exercises on campus.
26. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tai chi and baduanjin are only for the elderly people.
B. The coordination of the mind and body is not that important.
C. Sleep quality can be improved through slow-paced workouts.
D. Concentration can not be achieved through practicing breathing.
27. What is Zhang Dandan’s attitude toward practicing baduanjin?
A. Appreciative. B. Ambiguous. C. Doubtful. D. Cautious.

Students are already using AI in different ways. A recent report by the Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard Graduate School of Education explores the opinions of teens aged 13-17 on AI. In this report, teens share their opinions and concerns about AI and how the use of AI impacts learning and the world at large. Here’s what they think adults should know.
AI should not be a tool for cheating. While some admitted ever using AI to cheat on assignments, homework, or tests, many participants emphasized the positive academic experiences with AI, describing it as “the modern approach to learning.” Teens also expressed a desire for adults to trust them to use AI responsibly, as one teen noted, “to get ideas for writing a paper or to create a personal learning plan.”
AI can serve as a resource for unasked questions. The top two most frequently reported uses of AI are seeking information (53%) and brainstorming (51%). Many noted AI can help them get answers to questions they may be too afraid to ask adults, or give guidance on what to say in conversations.
AI is also a platform for exploration and creativity. One of the most encouraging aspects about AI is its potential to foster creativity and innovation. Numerous participants reported using AI for enjoyment and creative pursuits, such as writing song lyrics and creating digital art. Among the AI users surveyed, 31% say they use it to “create pictures or images,” while 16% report they use it to “make music,” and 15% state they use it to write code.
Some are concerned about the potential AI-related harms of bullying. “One of my classmates ever used it to take my voice and make it sound like I was saying something I didn’t say,” complained a teen. Some expressed concerns about its potential effects on the future job markets, as well as worries regarding privacy violations and the dissemination of misinformation.
28. What does “the modern approach to learning” in Paragraph 2 imply?
A. AI should replace traditional learning.
B. AI can improve and enhance one’s learning.
C. AI can help a student become more responsible.
D. AI should be banned for the possible use of cheating.
29. What are the two most frequent uses of AI in the survey?
A. Creating pictures and making music.
B. Getting information and brainstorming.
C. Writing song lyrics and creating digital art.
D. Writing a paper and making a learning plan.
30. What is the purpose of giving the example of bullying in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the proficiency of using AI.
B. To show that bullying is a widespread issue.
C. To illustrate the misuse and bad impacts of AI.
D. To stress the importance and convenience of AI.
31. What does the underlined word “dissemination” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Spread. B. Collection. C. Analysis. D. Confusion.
D
As I settled down to read David Spiegelhalter’s new book, The Art of Uncertainty: How to Navigate Chance, Ignorance, Risk, and Luck, much of the world’s attention was focused on the 2024 U. S. presidential elections. Countless forecasts said that the race was too close to call. Yet, when the result was announced — Donald Trump won, it proved the uncertainty of our world. It was ideal timing to read Spiegelhalter’s book, which emphasizes the importance of staying humble when facing uncertainty and making predictions.
Spiegelhalter masterfully explains how to understand, measure, and communicate uncertainty by making statistical analyses and giving real-world examples in comprehensible language. He stresses that we must understand that probability, in many cases, may not truly exist. Furthermore, he believes that uncertainty is personal, as chance, ignorance, risk, and luck can shape our lives in unpredictable ways. As Spiegelhalter writes, uncertainty reflects the knowledge, perspective, and assumptions of each individual trying to understand or forecast events. It varies not only from person to person but also from situation to situation, even when the circumstances seem similar.
Spiegelhalter explains the two main types of uncertainty: aleatory (偶然的) uncertainty, things that we cannot know, and epistemic (认知的) uncertainty, things that we do not know. As for epistemic uncertainty, better data collection, refined models and deeper investigation can help us make predictions and informed decisions in the face of uncertainty. Spiegelhalter stresses the need for us to stay humble while making predictions. In an age in which scientists often feel pressured to show certainty and the world increasingly needs certainty, it is necessary for us to admit the limits of our knowledge and accept our ignorance.
Through compelling examples — from economic forecasts to climate models, Spiegelhalter shows even our most sophisticated statistical tools can face uncertain outcomes. He believes that recognizing uncertainty helps build public trust rather than reduces it. This recognition empowers individuals to make better-informed choices, which may lead to improved results.
32. What does Spiegelhalter think of uncertainty?
A. It is individual in an unpredictable world.
B. Uncertainty and probability don’t actually exist.
C. It can be avoided by making statistical analyses.
D It is a fixed concept that can be easily measured.
33. How should we address epistemic uncertainty, according to Spiegelhalter?
A. By making breakthroughs in things we cannot know.
B. Through making random predictions without any data.
C. By improving data collection, models, and investigation.
D. Through avoiding uncertainty and focusing on certainty.
34. Why should we stay humble while making predictions?
A. Because the world needs more certainty.
B Because we need to help build public trust.
C. Because we are not as knowledgeable as scientists.
D. Because there are so many things we do not know.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The importance of prediction in modern society.
B. Accepting uncertainty in big events like elections.
C. How to use data analysis in an unpredictable world.
D. How to navigate uncertainty in an unpredictable world.

Changing Grief into Power
Sarah came from a small town. As a child, she was known for her warm smile and kind heart, always the first to lend a helping hand to her neighbors — whether it was helping an elderly neighbor with groceries or volunteering at the local animal shelter. But underneath her cheerful smile, she had a not very happy family.
Sarah grew up in a loving home, but it was often chaotic (混乱的). Her father was a respected teacher, but he was addicted to drinking alcohol. Her mother worked tirelessly to keep the family together. As a child, Sarah learned to cope with the ups and downs of her family life, often finding comfort and help from books. Helping her neighbors gave her strength to become stronger and better.
Despite the challenges at home, Sarah studied hard and excelled academically, dreaming of building a brighter future. After graduating from high school with good grades, she was admitted to a famous university to study psychology. Her dream came true. At university, Sarah studied diligently and became one of the top students. Her friends loved the cheerful, hardworking and warm-hearted Sarah.
One day in her second year in university, tragedy struck when she received the news of her father’s death, due to too much alcohol drinking. Heart-broken, she hurried home for the funeral, feeling overwhelmed with grief and “guilt”. She regretted she should have helped his father earlier.
After going back to school, Sarah struggled to keep pace with her studies. She often sat alone, lost in her thoughts, unwilling to talk with her friends or classmates. The cheerful young lady began to fade. Her friends and classmates noticed the change but they felt helpless, unsure of how to reach out and help her through the struggle.

M: Well, I was torn between online courses, language apps and traditional classroom lessons, but I chose apps. They are super convenient.
W: Interesting! I studied Spanish at college. My study was tough but well structured.
M: I thought about that. For now, the app works, but I might try it in the future.
W: What topics are you covering?
M: A bit of everything — daily conversations, travel phrases and business. And I’m really into traditional literature right now. The beauty of the language really shines there.
W: Right, poetry is my favourite. But it’s hard, isn’t it?
M: Yes. Many words are detailed and the sentence structures are confusing. It’s worthwhile, though, and helps with vocabulary, too.
W: Absolutely. Knowing the small differences is so rewarding. Soon you’ll be reading classics easily.

【解析】
【原文】DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr Mendel discovered why we look so much like our parents. It’s because of small things, which are now called “genes”, in our body. The chemical DNA was first discovered in 1869, but its role was not demonstrated until 1943. In 1953, two scientists found out that those small parts carry really important messages. They’re written in the DNA with a special language. In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. So far, scientists have now found all the words in the DNA map, but we still don’t understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do. Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry that when we find out more information, we may use it in the wrong way.

A. To improve his grades in sports classes.
B. To compete in sports events on campus.
C. To get enough academic credits after an operation.
D. To popularize traditional Chinese exercises on campus.
26 What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tai chi and baduanjin are only for the elderly people.
B. The coordination of the mind and body is not that important.
C. Sleep quality can be improved through slow-paced workouts.
D. Concentration can not be achieved through practicing breathing.

A. Spread. B. Collection. C. Analysis. D. Confusion.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. C 31. A

D. It is a fixed concept that can be easily measured.
B. Because we need to help build public trust.
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. D 35. D

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“As for epistemic uncertainty, better data collection, refined models and deeper investigation can help us make predictions and informed decisions in the face of uncertainty.(对于认知的不确定性,更好的数据收集,更精细的模型和更深入的调查可以帮助我们在面对不确定性时做出预测和明智的决策)”可知,根据Spiegelhalter的说法,我们应该通过改进数据收集、模型和调查解决认知上的不确定性。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Spiegelhalter stresses the need for us to stay humble while making predictions. In an age in which scientists often feel pressured to show certainty and the world increasingly needs certainty, it is necessary for us to admit the limits of our knowledge and accept our ignorance.(Spiegelhalter强调,我们在做出预测时需要保持谦逊。在这个时代,科学家们常常感到有展示确定性的压力,而世界越来越需要确定性,我们有必要承认我们知识的局限性,接受我们的无知)”可知,我们在做预测的时候要保持谦虚因为我们不知道的事情太多了。故选D。
【35题详解】

【答案】Paragraph 1: Things didn’t improve until her teacher gave her a book, inviting her to join the Smiling Club. The book was about being strong and resilient, and it sparked the strength within Sarah. Inspired, she joined the Smiling Club, where people shared their experiences of overcoming pains. Surrounded by others who understood her struggles, she started to open up about her feelings of “guilt”. The club’s support empowered her to turn grief into action. Sarah even helped organize an event to raise awareness about drinking and smoking addiction, aiming to help others avoid similar struggles. In time, the smiling Sarah returned.
Paragraph 2: After graduation, Sarah set up a Smiling Community Center in her hometown. At the Smiling Community Center, she greeted visitors with her warm smile, making everyone feel at home. People chatted and enjoyed each other’s company. When people shared stories of their sufferings, Sarah inspired them with her own experience. Gradually, the center developed into a haven where people sought comfort, belonging, and encouragement. As Sarah witnessed the changes of herself and the community, she found the empowering benefits through sharing experiences of overcoming pains, becoming an attentive listener, and offering thoughtful advice.
