I lost my sight at 18 due to an eye condition. By the third year of my math and stats degree I’d decided that enough was enough — I wasn’t going to tiptoe (蹑手蹑脚地走) through life in cotton wool. Against the wishes of my parents, I headed off to Canada. I went there alone — just me and my blindness. That taught me your world becomes bigger when you push your limits.
In 2020, I took part in a 220-mile hike across Nicaragua alongside 10 other people with disabilities for a BBC program. We had to work as a team to go across tropical rainforests and a lake with sharks, as well as up a 5,000ft volcano. I was pushing a wheelchair through a dense jungle; no amount of exercise could have prepared me for it — it became all about mental toughness.
Often, people who are sighted think they need to be good at describing scenery, but they can just describe what they see as a normal conversation. I love it when people give me the overview first; when you look at a picture, you don’t see the little details straight away. As words go into my ears, they translate into beautiful pictures. I’ll keep the imagery and mix it with other sensory details. If I’m at Victoria Falls, I’ll have the falls described to me, and then feel the spray (水花) on my face. I hear the thunderous falls, and I’m aware of their smell. They’re all feelings that add up to an incredible experience.
I had one of my most amazing experiences on a floating island in Lake Titicaca. I took a group in 2022, and the indigenous people had never met anybody blind before. When I took another group a few weeks later, they’d made a scale model of the island so that the blind could touch it. It doesn’t matter where you go, finding that connection is priceless.
For blind people, it’s natural to feel that the world has closed for you, but when you have a positive mind, obstacles (障碍) become opportunities.
4. How did the author probably feel about his life before heading off to Canada?
A. Puzzled. B. Bored. C. Satisfied. D. Inspired.
5. What can be inferred about the author from his hike in 2020?
A. He failed to get along with other people. B. He was treated differently during the trip.
C. He trained hard to hike through forests. D. He was tested physically and mentally.
6. Compared with normal people, what may the author think is his advantage in touring?
A. His combination of various senses. B. His easy and relaxing schedule.
C. His rich words and expressions. D. His extraordinary imagination.
7. What can be learned from the author’s experience?
A. Time and tide wait for no man. B. Never judge a book by its cover.
C. To know oneself is true progress. D. Never set boundaries for one’s life.

For most of us, imagining a world damaged by the climate crisis is painful. After all, it would require us to accept the inconvenient truth and face our deepest fears. But for French photographer and digital artist Fabien Barrau, doing that is necessary to make us face the fact that we’re headed into a terrible world of our own making.
Thus was born News From The Future, a series by Barrau. It explores what famous architectural landmarks around the world will look like in consequence of the climate crisis, and was created with the help of his drone (无人机) and remarkable Photoshop skills. “I remain convinced that a simple image can have much impact on people, especially the young, helping them understand the probabilities of the consequences of inaction, thus to act with urgency to avoid its most catastrophic (灾难的) consequences,” Barrau said.
To visualize these catastrophic consequences, Barrau digitally changes drone footage (连续镜头) and previous images — taking the Eiffel Tower to dry extremes, drowning the Statue of Liberty in waist-deep floods (the statue’s waist, not ours), while the Arc de Triomphe seems a decoration of the vast ocean.
His series is heavily influenced by existing artworks that explore the collapse of a civilization. For example, the image of two whales swimming above the Arc de Triomphe is to show respect for the French artist Roland Cat, whose work imagined sea creatures swimming above drowned cities. He also credits films like Planet of the Apes and Mad Max as major influences.
“I like to do landscape and architecture photography and I have travelled to many countries to photograph amazing environments,” Barrau said. “But over the years, I have increasingly felt the catastrophic effects of the climate crisis on biodiversity, landscapes and people. It seems difficult for me to pretend that nothing changes. I believe that the stories that my images tell can help people realize what the need of the hour is.”
8. What was Barrau’s aim of creating News From The Future?
A. To prove a prediction. B. To attract public attention.
C. To inspire people’s imagination. D. To improve people’s taste in architecture.
9. Which of the following can best describe Barrau’s works?
A. Ordinary but attractive. B. Pleasant and refreshing.
C. Realistic and colorful. D. Imaginary but powerful.
10. What does the mention of Roland Cat and two films in Paragraph 4 show?
A. Barrau’s contributions to the field of art.
B. The inspiration behind Barrau’s creations.
C. Barrau’s ambition to enter the film industry.
D. The high social recognition of Barrau’s works.
11. What does Barrau expect to do through photography?
A. Raise people’s environmental awareness.
B. Encourage more people to travel across the world.
C Convince people to be prepared for natural disasters.
D. Break down people’s prejudices against photography.

When we discuss our warming planet, we, however, overlook the impact of warming temperatures on our oceans. A new study published by researchers from the University of Exeter explores the link between warming temperatures and their impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone (暮光带).
The twilight zone is a region of the ocean that lies between the upper ocean and the deep ocean and is located around 200 to 1,000 meters under the surface. In the upper ocean, tiny plant-like organisms (生物) called phytoplankton turn carbon (碳) from the atmosphere into organic matter. This formation of organic matter, along with other waste matter, produces a shower of organic material. It helps start the ocean’s huge food web as organic matter and other carbon-based products go down from the surface and move through the depths of the ocean.
This process by which heat-trapping carbon is stored in deep waters instead of going into the atmosphere is an essential set of processes that control the Earth’s climate system. The ocean’s twilight zone is also home to many creatures. Twilight zone animals consume matter near the upper ocean during the night and return to the deeper waters during the day, directly moving carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean. In this way, the organisms in the twilight zone help.
Sadly, the study suggests that up to 40% of twilight zone creatures could disappear by the end of the century. This is because rising temperatures increase the rate at which organic matter is eaten and disappears. As a result, less carbon goes down into the twilight zone and beyond for storage as organic matter. Given that organisms in the twilight zone are highly dependent on going down organic matter, this could put their complex food cycles in danger.
However, the authors tell us that we have not yet reached the point that couldn’t be saved and that there is still time for us to act. Not only will this increase our ocean’s carbon cycling processes, but it will also protect beings in the deepest parts of our oceans.
12. What plays a big role in the beginning of ocean creatures’ food web?
A. The wide variety of deep-sea creatures.
B. Organisms’ activities on the ocean floor.
C. The amount of waste matter on the surface.
D. Carbon-based products dropping into the twilight zone.
13. How do twilight zone animals’ activities contribute to the Earth?
A. By warming the twilight zone. B. By releasing heat-trapping carbon.
C. By balancing the Earth’s temperature. D. By clearing waste matter out of the ocean.
14. What may be a result of rising temperatures on twilight zone creatures?
A. Smaller living spaces. B. The break of their food chain.
C. Better ability to adapt to climate. D. Increased food on the sea surface.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Acting to protect our ocean
B. The future of twilight zone creatures
C. The disappearing ocean’s twilight zone creatures
D. Unlocking the secrets of organic matter in the ocean

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell me the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff-tents, snacks, and a map-preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they departed for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome, ” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But little did they know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories. “Man, we nailed these tents, ” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm erupted with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the peaceful campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a deafening crack on their only means of escape - their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of disbelief and despair. “We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder and raindrops. They realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once quiet campsite now stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the world around them.

B
I lost my sight at 18 due to an eye condition. By the third year of my math and stats degree, I’d decided that enough was enough — I wasn’t going to tiptoe (蹑手蹑脚地走) through life in cotton wool.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. D

C. Convince people to be prepared for natural disasters.
D. Break down people’s prejudices against photography.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. A

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。海洋暮光带中的生物对全球气候很重要,但随着全球变暖,那里的很多生物可能会死亡。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“This formation of organic matter, along with other waste matter, produces a shower of organic material. It helps start the ocean’s huge food web as organic matter and other carbon-based products go down from the surface and move through the depths of the ocean.(这种有机物质的形成,连同其他废物,产生了大量的有机物质。当有机物质和其他碳基产品从海洋表面向下移动并穿过海洋深处时,它有助于启动海洋巨大的食物网)”可知,大量的含碳的有机物质的形成及下沉有助于启动海洋复杂的食物网。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“This process by which heat-trapping carbon is stored in deep waters instead of going into the atmosphere is an essential set of processes that control the Earth’s climate system. The ocean’s twilight zone is also home to many creatures. Twilight zone animals consume matter near the upper ocean during the night and return to the deeper waters during the day, directly moving carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean. In this way, the organisms in the twilight zone help.(捕获热量的碳储存在深水中而不是进入大气的过程是控制地球气候系统的一套基本过程。海洋的暮光带也是许多生物的家园。暮光带的动物在夜间消耗上层海洋附近的物质,在白天返回较深的水域,直接将碳从海洋表面转移到深海。在这种情况下,处于暮光带的生物就能提供帮助)”可知,暮光带的生物能将碳转移到深海里,平衡全球气温。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This is because rising temperatures increase the rate at which organic matter is eaten and disappears. As a result, less carbon goes down into the twilight zone and beyond for storage as organic matter. Given that organisms in the twilight zone are highly dependent on going down organic matter, this could put their complex food cycles in danger.(这是因为不断上升的温度加快了有机物被吃掉和消失的速度。其结果是,更少的碳进入暮光带,并以有机物质的形式储存。考虑到生活在过渡带的生物高度依赖于有机物,这可能会使它们复杂的食物循环处于危险之中)”可推知,气温上升可能会导致越来越少的含碳有机物下沉到深海,进一步导致海洋食物链受到影响。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“When we discuss our warming planet, we, however, overlook the impact of warming temperatures on our oceans. A new study published by researchers from the University of Exeter explores the link between warming temperatures and their impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone (暮光带).(然而,当我们讨论地球变暖时,我们忽略了温度变暖对海洋的影响。埃克塞特大学的研究人员发表了一项新研究,探讨了气温升高及其对海洋暮光带的影响之间的联系)”以及本文主要讨论了气温上升会导致海洋暮光地带的生物减少,进而影响海洋的生态系统可知,C选项“正在消失的海洋暮光带”最符合文章标题。故选C。

【答案】
Paragraph 1: The next day, they found themselves facing the immediate problem of finding water. The search for water soon drained their energy. They were about to give up when they heard a small sound, a splash of some sort. They ran as fast as they could and found a small stream-a lifeline in all the challenges. However, with time passing by, more challenges emerged -limited food, frightful night filled with wilderness sounds, and the uncertainty of survival in the wild. Their nerves were near the edge of breaking down after long hours of uncertainty in the wilderness.
Paragraph 2: On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness. Relief washed over the weary faces as they witnessed the approach of a rugged vehicle. Kevin’s dad stepped out to meet the group. The emotions that played across their faces - disbelief, gratitude, and overwhelming joy- mirrored the shared trouble that had forged a deep bond among them. Back home, Kevin’s dad said, “Good thing you told me those directions,” teaching them the importance of informing someone about plans. The experience turned into tales of courage and resilience, embedded in their memories as lessons for a lifetime.
