A New Zealand man, Nigel Richards, recently won an international Spanish Scrabble competition although he does not speak Spanish. In the competition, he lost one game out of 24. Scrabble is a board game in which players form words from letters to gain points.
Nothing like the New Zealander’s win had ever happened in Spanish Scrabble, said Alejandro Terenzani, an organizer of the competition. “It was impossible to react negatively — you can only be amazed,” Terenzani said. “We certainly expected that he would perform well, but it is perhaps true that he was beyond our expectations.”
Many people are wondering how Richards could win without speaking Spanish. Liz Fagerlund is a New Zealand Scrabble official and a friend of Richards. She recently said that Richards had started memorizing the Spanish language Scrabble word list one year before. She said, “He can’t understand why other people can’t just do the same thing. He can look at a block of words together, and once they go into his brain as a picture, he can just remember that very easily.”
However, the recent Scrabble competition is not the first that Richards has won in a language that he does not speak. Richards is a professional Scrabble player. He holds five English-language world championships in the board game. In 2015, he became the French language Scrabble world champion although he does not speak French. He studied the French language word list for nine weeks. He won the French championship again in 2018.
Richards is known in the world of international Scrabble as the greatest player of all time. He has been playing in competitions for about 30 years. But other players have said his Spanish language victory was notable even by his standards.
Richards now lives in Malaysia. He never speaks to reporters. “I get lots of requests from journalists wanting to interview him, but he’s not interested,” Fagerlund said.
4. What makes Richards’ victory in the Spanish Scrabble competition different?
A. He won 24 games easily.
B. He achieved victory without speaking Spanish.
C. He became professional in Spanish within one year.
D. He befriended an organizer of the competition.
5 What do Fagerlund’s words about Richards show?
A. Richards has a unique and powerful memory.
B. Other players should learn from Richards.
C. Richards has a special way of writing Spanish.
D. Memorizing word lists is the key to winning Scrabble.
6. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. The competition Richards faced in similar matches.
B. Richards’ achievements in Scrabble competitions.
C. The efforts Richards made to win the Spanish Scrabble.
D. Richards’ journey to becoming a professional Scrabble player.
7. Which words can best describe Richards?
A. Creative and cool-headed. B. Popular and ambitious.
C. Responsible and easy-going. D. Talented and mysterious.
B 5. A 6. B 7. D

Norway is very close to meeting its goal of selling only fully electric new vehicles starting this year. The Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), an automotive industry group, guesses that nearly 96 percent of new cars registered (登记)in Norway in January were all-electric. No other country has such a high rate of electric vehicle (EV) ownership.
To reach 100 percent of the goal means continuing to offer the incentives (奖励) that make it beneficial to choose an electric car over other models. It’s worth noting that Norway has not prohibited the sale of cars with engines that burn fuel. Instead, it offers a number of tax breaks to EV producers and owners. On the other hand, the country heavily taxes gas-powered vehicles. For example, Norwegian EV owners do not have to pay road tolls (养路费) and receive free parking in public car parks. EVs are also permitted to use parts of roads normally saved for public transportation vehicles.
Eirik Olsen is a 50-year-old father of three who owns two EVs. He said that he converted to electric cars because of his concern for the environment and his desire for the benefits of driving them.
Many homes have a device to charge or supply electricity to their EV’s battery. Norway also has a large national network of superfast charging stations. Having a nationwide charging network is important for Frode Hvattum, who, like many Norwegians, often travels by car to his second home in the mountains several hours outside Oslo. He said he finds it easy to plan and make trips with numerous charging stations accessible.
Even if EV sales fail to meet the 100 percent mark this year, experts say Norway can still be seen as having met its goal. OFV director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a statement, “We’ve never seen this before... If the rest of the year continues like this, we will very soon be close to the 2025 goal. ”
8. What has Norway done to meet its goal?
A. It has improved its public transportation.
B. It has made policies in EV owners’ favor.
C. It has limited the trade of gas-powered vehicles.
D. It has set specific parking lots for EVs.
9. What does the underlined part “converted to” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Fought for. B. Turned to. C. Referred to. D. Searched for.
10. Why does the author mention Hvattum’s example?
A. To show the challenge of promoting EVs in Norway.
B. To share that Norwegians all care about the environment.
C. To prove that having a second home is common in Norway.
D. To stress the importance of a nationwide charging network.
11. What is Thorsen’s attitude towards Norway’s achieving its 2025 goal?
A. Hopeful. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
B 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据文章第二段“To reach 100 percent of the goal means continuing to offer the incentives(奖励)that make it beneficial to choose an electric car over other models. It’s worth noting that Norway has not prohibited the sale of cars with engines that burn fuel. Instead, it offers a number of tax breaks to EV producers and owners. EVs are also permitted to use parts of roads normally saved for public transportation vehicles.(要实现100%的目标,就意味着要继续提供激励措施,让人们觉得选择电动汽车比选择其他车型更有利。
根据划线单词上文“Eirik Olsen is a 50-year-old father of three who owns two EVs.(50岁的Eirik Olsen是三个孩子的父亲,他拥有两辆电动汽车。)”以及下文“because of his concern for the environment and his desire for the benefits of driving them(因为他关心环境,并且希望享受驾驶电动汽车带来的好处。)”
根据文章第四段“Many homes have a device to charge or supply electricity to their EV’s battery. Norway also has a large national network of superfast charging stations. Having a nationwide charging network is important for Frode Hvattum, who, like many Norwegians, often travels by car to his second home in the mountains several hours outside Oslo. He said he finds it easy to plan and make trips with numerous charging stations accessible.(许多家庭都有为电动汽车电池充电或供电的设备。
根据文章最后一段“OFV director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a statement, “We’ve never seen this before... If the rest of the year continues like this, we will very soon be close to the 2025 goal. ”(挪威道路联合会主任Oyvind Solberg Thorsen在一份声明中说:“我们以前从未见过这种情况…… 如果今年剩余时间继续保持这样的态势,我们很快就会接近实现2025年的目标。”)”可推测,他认为目前的情况很好,并且如果这种良好的态势持续下去,挪威很有希望实现2025年的目标,所以他的态度是充满希望的。故选A。

As the Earth’s climate continues to warm, hurricanes are growing stronger. Florida’s wildlife, which includes animals such as manatees, alligators, and dolphins, is impacted by damage from heavy flooding and especially strong winds.
According to Maureen McCann, a weather expert, rising temperatures lead to more severe storms. This results in heavy rainfall and unusual rises in the level of the sea near the coast. These changes cause challenges not only for humans, but also for the state’s wildlife.
That’s where Clearwater Marine Aquarium (水族馆) comes in. It works to rescue ocean animals after these types of events. Hurricanes can send sea turtles and manatees to other places, often leaving them stranded (搁浅) in unfamiliar places like rivers or lakes. Kelly Martin, Vice President of Zoological Care, explained that teams from the Aquarium help send these animals back to their natural habitats (栖息地).
“Ocean animals are born with the ability to sense coming storms,” Martin said, adding that they might react to changes in air pressure or ocean currents. While wild animals use this ability to survive, organizations like the Aquarium ensure that animals in their care remain safe and calm during hurricanes.
Hurricanes also affect habitats in other ways. Warmer oceans and rising sea levels increase the power of storms, leading to more severe coastal flooding. These changes threaten ecosystems and the animals that depend on them.
Martin warned, “Wild animals have amazing survival skills, so it’s best not to get involved unless they’ re in clear danger. Thus, it would be better if people observe stranded animals from a safe distance for some time after a storm, and contact local wildlife rescue organizations only when necessary.”
Kids can also help by learning about careers in meteorology and climate science. “Preparedness is key,” MeCann said. “And for those interested in science, there are so many opportunities to make a difference.”
Supporting wildlife rescue organizations like Clearwater Marine Aquarium can also help protect animals affected by hurricanes. “Whether you visit, donate, or share our story, your support makes a difference,” Martin said.
12. What does Maureen McCann say about the warming climate?
A It drives certain animals to go extinct.
B. It enables ocean animals to be more adaptive.
C. It contributes to the formation of more serious storms.
D. It makes it hard for some regions to get enough rainfall.
13. How do hurricanes influence the wild animals in Florida?
A. By reducing their food supplies.
B. By slowing down their reaction speed.
C. By displacing them from their natural habitats.
D. By causing them to lose their sense of direction.
14. What’s Martin’s suggestion?
A. Trying to rescue them immediately.
B. Sending them to rescue organizations directly.
C. Leaving them alone to avoid potential risks.
D. Watching their condition before taking any action.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Growing Power of Hurricanes
B. Florida’s Wild Animals and Their Habitats
C. The Role of Aquariums in Protecting Wild Animals
D. Hurricanes’ Impact on Florida’ s Wildlife and Solutions
C 13. C 14. D 15. D

根据文章第二段“According to Maureen McCann, a weather expert, rising temperatures lead to more severe storms. This results in heavy rainfall and unusual rises in the level of the sea near the coast.(气象专家Maureen McCann表示,气温上升会引发更为猛烈的风暴。这会导致暴雨倾盆,沿海地区的海平面也会出现异常上升。)”可知,气象专家Maureen McCann指出,气温上升会导致更为猛烈的风暴,还会引发暴雨以及沿海地区海平面的异常上升。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Hurricanes can send sea turtles and manatees to other places, often leaving them stranded(搁浅)in unfamiliar places like rivers or lakes. Kelly Martin, Vice President of Zoological Care, explained that teams from the Aquarium help send these animals back to their natural habitats(栖息地).(飓风可能会把海龟和海牛冲到其他地方,常常使它们搁浅在河流或湖泊等陌生的环境中。水族馆动物护理副总裁Kelly Martin解释说,水族馆的团队会帮助将这些动物送回它们的自然栖息地。)”可知,飓风会把海龟和海牛等野生动物冲到其他地方,使它们搁浅在像河流或湖泊这样不熟悉的地方,需要水族馆的团队帮助它们回到自然栖息地。这表明飓风将这些野生动物从它们的自然栖息地驱离,改变了它们的生存环境。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第三段“Martin warned, “Wild animals have amazing survival skills, so it’s best not to get involved unless they’ re in clear danger. Thus, it would be better if people observe stranded animals from a safe distance for some time after a storm, and contact local wildlife rescue organizations only when necessary.”(Martin提醒道:“野生动物拥有惊人的生存技能,所以除非它们明显处于危险之中,否则最好不要贸然干预。
In many parts of the world, winter brings cold temperatures and, in some places, snowfall. For people who like planting things, gardening may seem far away. However, winter is actually a great time for gardeners to get a head start and prepare for the spring bloom. Here are two important tasks to pay special attention to.
※ Check and test seeds (种子)
First, let’s talk about seeds. If you have packs of seeds, check their expiration date—the date by which they go “bad” or will not grow. ___16___ But don’ t be too quick to deal with the seeds that go beyond that date, as they may still be usable. The key is to test them.
The test is easy. ___17___ And then put them into a plastic container. In about 10 days, take a look to see how many seeds have sprouted (发芽). This gives you an idea of how many seeds you can use to get the right number of plants. However, what should you do if less than 50 percent of the seeds grow? ___18___
※ Examine and care for equipment
The second important aspect of winter gardening preparation is taking care of your gardening equipment. ___19___ Bulbs (灯泡) in grow lights may need replacement over time. Take out your grow lights and test each bulb. If you notice any bulbs that are not functioning order new ones immediately. This way, you’ ll be fully equipped to start growing plants.
“____20____” Gardening tools should be checked every year. Clean your gardening hand tools. Check water pipes, sprayers, and other water supply systems for damage. Replace or repair any parts as needed.
By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to a successful gardening season in the coming spring.
A. No pains, no gains.
B. Of course, throw them away.
C. Place several seeds on some wet paper.
D. To do a good job, one must first sharpen one’s tools.
E. If you use grow lights made for plants, make sure they still work.
F. Test your old seeds in the winter before the spring gardening season.
G. The seeds are usually considered “fresh” within a year of being packed.
G 17. C 18. B 19. E 20. D
根据上文“If you have packs of seeds, check their expiration date—the date by which they go “bad” or will not grow(如果你有几包种子,检查一下它们的保质期,也就是它们“变质”或无法生长的日期。)” G“The seeds are usually considered “fresh” within a year of being packed.(种子在包装后的一年内通常被认为是“新鲜的”。)”
根据上文“The test is easy.(测试很简单。)” C“Place several seeds on some wet paper.(将几颗种子放在一些湿纸上)”是测试的第一步,自然引出下文“And then put them into a plastic container.(然后把它们放入一个塑料容器中。)”
根据上文“However, what should you do if less than 50 percent of the seeds grow?(然而,如果你发现发芽的种子不到50%,那该怎么办呢?)” B“Of course, throw them away. 当然,把它们扔掉)”给出了相应的解决办法。故选B。
【19题详解】
根据下文“Bulbs(灯泡)in grow lights may need replacement over time. Take out your grow lights and test each bulb.(随着时间的推移,生长灯中的灯泡可能需要更换。拿出你的生长灯并测试每一个灯泡。)”可知,这里在讲植物生长灯的问题。选项E“If you use grow lights made for plants, make sure they still work.(如果你使用专为植物设计的生长灯,确保它们仍然能正常工作。)”
根据下文“Gardening tools should be checked every year. Clean your gardening hand tools. Check water pipes, sprayers, and other water supply systems for damage. When Brooke Kochel ordered heaters from Walmart in the middle of a heavy snowstorm that seemed to blanket the world in frozen white, she never imagined it would lead to a life-changing friendship.
Brooke and her husband, Charles, who was bravely battling a deadly disease, lost heat in their home as the temperatures dropped sharply. The freezing air was coming in through the cracks (缝隙), making the already difficult situation even more unbearable. Charles, weak from his treatment, was shaking under the thin blankets. In a desperate attempt to keep him warm, Brooke quickly turned to Walmart’s Spark Express service, hoping to get heaters delivered to their doorstep as soon as possible.
However, Eduardo Garcia, the transport driver appointed to send her order, ran into an unexpected challenge. The snow-covered roads were treacherous (暗藏危险的), and his truck skidded off the road and landed in a deep ditch (沟). He tried his best to get the vehicle out, but with no luck. “The information online kept saying he was two minutes away, and then 30 minutes later, it still said he was two minutes away. I finally called and said, ‘Are you lost?’ And he’s like, ‘I’m actually in a ditch. I’m not going to be able to make it,’” Brooke said, her voice filled with worry and disappointment.
During their conversation, Brooke, almost in tears, mentioned that the heaters were for her husband who needed warmth during his treatment for his serious illness. Garcia, a kind-hearted man with a deep sense of responsibility, then said he would carry the heaters to Brooke on foot. “I told him, ‘I wouldn’t have asked you to do this,’” Brooke recalled. “He said, ‘No, I can do this. Let me do it. I’ll finish the task. It’ll just take six minutes for each of us.’”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Then Garcia struggled through the knee-deep snow with the heaters in his arms.

However, Garcia refused to take the tip Brooke offered.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then Garcia struggled through the knee-deep snow with the heaters in his arms. The wind was howling and the snow was swirling around him, but he was determined. With each step, he sank deeper into the snow, his legs aching. After what seemed like an eternity, he finally reached Brooke’s house. When Brooke opened the door, she was shocked and deeply touched to see Garcia, his face red from the cold and exhaustion. “Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to us,” Brooke said, her eyes filled with gratitude.
However, Garcia refused to take the tip Brooke offered. “I just did what anyone should do in this situation,” he said with a warm smile. “I’m glad I could help your husband get through this difficult time.” His selflessness made a deep impression on Brooke. From then on, Brooke and Garcia became good friends. They often kept in touch, sharing their life stories. Garcia’s act of kindness not only brought warmth to Brooke’s home in the cold winter but also became a precious memory that would be cherished forever.

Richards is known in the world of international Scrabble as the greatest player of all time He has been playing in competitions for about 30 years.
5. What do Fagerlund’s words about Richards show?

A. Hopeful. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

A. It drives certain animals to go extinct.

If you notice any bulbs that are not functioning, order new ones immediately.
C Place several seeds on some wet paper.
D. To do a good job, one must first sharpen one’s tools.
E. If you use grow lights made for plants, make sure they still work.
F. Test your old seeds in the winter before the spring gardening season.
G. The seeds are usually considered “fresh” within a year of being packed.
