In 2018, 12-year-old Damian Earley was walking his dog when he noticed garbage cans knocked over by the wind, spilling trash onto the streets of his Columbus neighborhood. Disturbed by the environmental damage, he was inspired to create The Garbage Lot, a heavy platform with a locking mechanism to keep trash cans upright (直立). His invention won the “Industry Innovator Award” at Ohio’s Invention Convention and later earned first place at the national level.
Damian’s path as an inventor was shaped by his participation in the Ohio Invention League (the OIL), a nonprofit that provides free STEM education to K-12 students. Through hands-on invention competitions, he learned to “sell” his invention to judges. Writing and crafting his presentation helped sharpen his communication skills and practice entrepreneurship (创业), which are crucial for the future employment market where students will likely work in jobs that have not yet been created.
Damian’s teachers, particularly Sarah Priebe, admired his strong work ethic. She recalled Damian’s exceptional oral presentation in eighth grade, “You can tell he put a lot of time and practice into it. Many gifted students don’t seem to need to work as hard to excel at school, but he is always engaged and ready.”
Elena and Zavier, Damian’s siblings, followed in his footsteps, creating their own inventions and receiving awards. Elena, 14, developed a device to remove bad smells from washing machines, while 11-year-old Zavier invented a drone for people with limited mobility. Their father, Matt, shared that watching the invention process take place had changed how he addressed issues in his vinyl records (黑胶唱片) business.
4. What drove Damian to create The Garbage Lot?
A. His attention to neighborhood safety.
B. The mess caused by fallen trash cans.
C. His interest in environmental science.
D. The need for an invention competition.
5. How does the OIL program prepare students for future jobs?
A. By providing paid STEM education.
B. By creating jobs that haven’t existed.
C. By promoting entrepreneurial thinking.
D. By selling invention presentation skills.
6. What quality of Damian impressed his teachers?
A. Commitment. B. Intelligence. C. Curiosity. D. Leadership.
7 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Family of Inventors. B. From Inspired to Inspiring.
C. Solving Problems with OIL. D. Turning Trash into Treasure.

Cows love having an open area of grassland to graze on. But in some parts of the world, this is only possible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being stuck inside is not always pleasant for the cattle, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cattle see shades of red the easiest but have a hard time distinguishing between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production; which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
Cattle owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the emotional well-being of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it gives them an emotional boost. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being passed around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the “structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the entire herd.
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a link between a cow’s emotional state and its milk production. They stated, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity of milk increases markedly.”
8. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The cows can produce milk normally in the winter.
B. The cows prefer to live in a misty environment.
C. The VR headsets operate a unique program.
D. The VR headsets only display three colors.
9. What’s the result of cows’ wearing the VR headsets?
A. They could distinguish between blue and green.
B Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
10. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field.
B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality.
D A cow with good moods can produce more milk.
11. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. Keeping cows inside benefits a lot.
B. VR headsets boost milk production.
C. VR technology sees farming development.
D. Depressed emotion affects the quality of milk.

How did the ant steal the lion’s dinner? This isn’t the beginning of one of Aesop’s Fables. It’s the finding of a new study about ants and lions.
The whistling-thorn tree is a common sight on the plains of the east African grassland. Each tree is home to native acacia ants, which shelter inside the spines and drink juice from the tree. In return, when an elephant tries to eat the tree, ants climb up inside its nose and bite from the inside out. This has allowed the trees and the ants to grow well.
The big-headed ants arrived in this area between 2002 and 2005. They kill local acacia ants wherever they find them, robbing local whistling-thorn trees of their brave defenders against hungry elephants. Without ants to bite them, the elephants tear up the thorn trees, opening up the grassland, which makes it harder for lions to catch their preferred zebra meals.
In the new study, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his colleagues could have used drones or satellite images to study tree cover, but “we don’t have that kind of money,” Goheen says. Instead, the researchers tracked their collared lions, and then got down on hands and knees near the lions’ recent kills, using a range finder to measure the openness of the area. Areas with big-headed ants, the team showed, had 2.67 times higher visibility than areas without — meaning that lions could see farther, but so could their prey.
Over the three years of the study, zebra dinners decreased from 67 percent to 42 percent of lion kills. But the lions didn’t go hungry. Instead, they went for beef. Buffalo kills increased from zero to 42 percent of kills over the study period. “It’s a risky diet,” Goheen says. “Buffalo are big and feisty, and lions hunting buffalo are more likely to be injured.”
“The study shows that the disruption (干扰) can have serious effects on other species in the community,” says Goheen. “Those effects can be unexpected and indirect. Changes could also have an impact on food webs in other ecosystems.”
12. What is the relationship between acacia ants and whistling-thorn trees like?
A. Independent. B. Inharmonious. C. Competitive. D. Win-win.
13. What do we know about the study in paragraph 4?
A. It is worthy but indirect. B. It is specific but unreliable.
C. It is demanding but economical. D. It is expensive but effective.
14. What does the underlined word “feisty” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Stable. B. Wild. C. Exceptional. D. Inactive.
15. What phenomenon does Goheen describe in the last paragraph?
A. The butterfly effect. B. The greenhouse effect.
C. The bystander effect. D. The observer effect.

___19___
Exercise doesn’t have to leave you absolutely exhausted for it to count. Research shows that just a little bit counts in big ways. You can try mowing the lawn, taking your dog on a brisk walk or playing basketball with friends. Any kind of regular, moderate physical activity that gets your heart rate up will bring you benefits like better sleep, reduced anxiety and lower blood pressure.
Get a workout buddy
___20___ Teammates help you “hold yourself accountable,” says Dr. Mitesh Patel, a behavioral scientist. You’ll be less likely to break from your training plan if a gym buddy is counting on you to show up and put in the work with them.

C. Change your definition of “exercise”.
D. So think about the kind of sport that makes you feel good.

The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

C. Curiosity. D. Leadership.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

C
Cows love having an open area of grassland to graze on. But in some parts of the world this is only possible during the summer.
B. Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
10. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field.
B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality.
D. A cow with good moods can produce more milk.
11. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. Keeping cows inside benefits a lot.
B. VR headsets boost milk production.
C. VR technology sees farming development.
D. Depressed emotion affects the quality of milk.

D
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据划线词后文“and lions hunting buffalo are more likely to be injured (狮子捕猎水牛更容易受伤)”可知,狮子捕猎水牛更容易受伤,说明水牛比狮子更加凶猛。故划线词意思是“凶猛的”。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““The study shows that the disruption can have serious effects on other species in the community,” says Goheen. “Those effects can be unexpected and indirect. Changes could also have an impact on food webs in other ecosystems.” (“研究表明,这种破坏会对群落中的其他物种产生严重影响,”Goheen说。“这些影响可能是意想不到的和间接的。变化也可能对其他生态系统的食物网产生影响”)”可知,干扰对生态系统中的其他物种有严重、意外和间接的影响,属于蝴蝶效应。故选A。

Athletes of every sport prove it’s never too late to uncover your fitness potential. Whether you have big Olympic dreams or just want to finish a 5K run, here are science-backed tips on how to kickstart (and keep) an exercise routine.
Start an exercise routine that you’ll actually continue
This may sound like a no-brainer, but many people start off their fitness journey with a too-ambitious routine in the hopes of seeing quick results - only to give up after a few weeks. ___16___ If you like being in nature, plan a day bike or take up surfing. If you love dancing, try a Zumba class.
Give yourself a month
Commit to about four weeks of exercise. ___17___ One 2020 randomized (随机的) controlled trial, for example, found that people who were paid to exercise for 28 days were likely to continue exercising 10 months later. “___18___,” says Katy Milkman, a professor at the Wharton School of Business who worked on the study. “If you can get that repetition going while you have high motivation, you’re much more likely to have a behavior change that lasts.”
A. Repetition is the key.
B. Engage in various exercises.
C. Change your definition of “exercise”.
D. So think about the kind of sport that makes you feel good.
E. According to research, this can help you build a new routine.
F. There’s a reason many Olympic athletes train with partners or on larger teams.
G. Try new exercises, explore various workout classes, or engage in recreational sports.

I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t achieved your goals for the past year and are feeling disappointed. Feeling this way is completely normal. However, it’s important not to lose hope. Here are some tips that may help you set and achieve your goals.
Firstly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Failure is a valuable lesson and experience that can help you grow. Secondly, reflect on what went wrong and learn from your mistakes. Perhaps the plan was too ambitious or not practical enough. For the next one, make sure to set realistic and achievable goals, and break them down into smaller steps.

It should keep for a while.” Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.

His heart was pounding as he handed over the money and received the beautiful brooch in return.
Excited and proud, he returned home with the brooch. He waited patiently for the perfect moment that he could present to his mother. He quietly approached her and held out the small box. With a trembling hand, she opened it and gasped at the sight of the sparkling brooch. Tears welled up in her eyes as she embraced Reuben tightly. “Where did you get this?” she asked, her voice choked with emotion.
